Random Thoughts on Jayson Tatum, Marcus Morris, LeBron and more

The annual Rookie Survey is out.  This is the survey where the rookies themselves vote for several different categories including Rookie of the Year, Best Career, Best Shooter and more.  While Jason Tatum didn't get a lot of first place finishes,  he did get votes in several categories.   This has been described as one of the deepest rookie classes in recent memory and so it will be fun to see how these things actually shake out throughout the season.

The top 3 finishers for who will win Rookie of the Year are Dennis Smith Jr. 25.7%, Lonzo Ball 20.0%,
and Markelle Fultz 17.1%. Jayson Tatum was listed among others receiving votes so at least a couple of his fellow rookies feel he is capable of winning the award. The thing with Tatum winning Rookie of the Year is that, unlike most of the rookies, he will be on a very talented team with very good veterans ahead of him and so playing time may be more limited than it will be for others. It's worth noting that only one time in the history of the rookie survey have they correctly predicted the winner and that was Kevin Durant in 2007 so there is a good chance that Smith will not end up with the award.

The one category in which Jayson Tatum came out on top was "Who will have the best career?" Lonzo Ball and Jayson Tatum tied for first with 18.4% each. It's interesting to note that top pick Markelle Fultz was way down in 6th place with just 5.3% of the vote. So, fellow rookies feel that Danny was right in picking Tatum over Fultz in that they feel that there is a much better chance of Tatum having a better career.

Donovan Mitchell who was the 13th pick by the Utah Jazz won the vote for who was the biggest steal for where he was picked with 18.9% of the vote. Jayson Tatum got 3 votes in this category. It seems that Danny wasn't the only one who maybe though he should have been the top pick. I was surprised to see that Semi Ojeleye didn't get any votes for this question. A player who was predicted to go in the early 30s lasts until 37, you would think someone would consider them a big steal.

Dennis Smith Jr. with 43.6% of the vote won for most athletic. Jaylen Brown won this category last season with 38.7% of the vote. Tatum didn't get any votes in this category. Best shooter was Luke Kennard with 48.6% of the vote. It's surprising that Tatum didn't get any votes in this category, considering that one of his strengths is shooting the ball. Lonzo Ball won best playmaker with 71.8% of the vote and Jayson Tatum was among others who received votes. Still surprising that he would get a vote for best playmaker but not for best shooter.

It's also interesting to note that after three straight years as the rookies' favorite player, Kevin Durant only received a couple of votes. He has lost a lot of respect among fans and also among fellow players. LeBron James won this category for just the second time. Finally, Dennis Scott gave his pick for All Rookie team - Smith, Ball, Fox, Collins and Tatum. Again, Tatum was picked over Fultz. Again, it's surprising because Philly will depend on Fultz a lot more than the Celtics will need to de;end on Tatum.

Comcast Sportsnet is reporting that Markieff and Marcus Morris' court date has been set for August 28. Each brother is facing a pair of aggravated assault charges stemming from an incident in 2015. If they are convicted, they could face over 3 years jail time for each of the assault charges. If they plead guilty, or no contest, they also could be suspended for a minimum of 10 games by the NBA. They could possibly avoid jail time by pleading down to a misdemeanor but they still could be suspended by the league.

The brothers deny having anything to do with the assault and so it may be a case of he said-they said, and in that case they may avoid punishment. When Tony Allen was accused of assault way back when he was a Celtic, it ended in charges being dropped because there was a lack of solid evidence. Hopefully this case will end up the same way, but there is a chance that they can be convicted and in that case, the Celtics may not have Marcus Morris for an extended period of time. At least they will hopefully know their fate before training camp starts. I wonder if Marcus has a clause in the contract covering conduct detrimental to the team.

Demetrius Jackson has signed a two way contract with the Houston Rockets.  I thought that he was going to be very good but he never seemed to progress with the Celtics.  Also, Jordan Mickey signed a 2 year contract with the Miami Heat.  He was another player I had very high hopes for but he just never was able to show enough progress to get playing time.  Now the Heat has both Kelly Olynyk and Jordan Mickey.  I guess they like former Celtics.   I really like both players and wish them luck with their new teams.

I'll finish with a couple of tweets that caught my attention. First is a new drill that the Celtics have reportedly added for workouts this season. Interesting that Nader leads the pack but then again it doesn't specify which players have been in Boston working out already.

Finally, this gif never gets old. Sometimes I feel bad that I get such enjoyment out of watching it over and over again. But then again, after watching LeBron fall the the floor grabbing his mouth or writhing in pain after barely being touched and faking injuries, he pretty much deserves it. He's been very lucky never to have a major injury in his entire career but he sure does whine and complain when he gets a little bit of contact. I suppose I shouldn't have such a great dislike for him, but I just do. When the Celtics beat him and his team once again, it will be very sweet.
