Comments from the Other Side - Wizards Game 1 4/30/17

So much hate for the Celtics from just about every fan base.  It's funny how the Wiz fans called the Celtics fans whiners and then proceeded to whine about the officiating throughout the game.  A game where they shot 22 free throws to 15 for the Celtics and they didn't get called for one foul in the second half until 4 minutes to go in the 4th.  Also funny that they blame fatigue.  Uh,  the Celtics finished their series with the Bulls at the same time they finished theirs with the Hawks.  And our star had to travel across the country to his sister's funeral and back overnight.  Also, they are pretty salty about Horford.  Sour grapes because he chose Boston and not them.   Anyway,  some fun comments. My favorites are in bold.  What are yours?   



Make no mistake, Horford will be a big issue for us in this series yeah he had a bad game or two but look at his stat line for the series, flat out elite. We’ve always had serious trouble vs him including the postseason 2yrs ago and now gortat is older, Ian is out, and Smith is hobbled and not a starter level player to begin with. Horford could feast on us in a variety of ways.

The defensive excellence of Bradley, Smart, and Crowder will also be a big factor Wizards have to overcome in this series. Obviously exploiting IT every second we can is going to be key.

Crowder is not a good defender. Smart and Bradley are the good defenders.

Idk about that there are bunch of articles out there touting his defense this year

he's built like an NFL linebacker too i’ll defer to those who have watched him all year but i’d be willing to bet he’s much better than Otto or Boj and probably overall better than KO as well just in being much more experienced and probably less apt for quick fouls

I go back to the Celtics from the sixties Grew up a Sixers fan. Hated everything about that team and still do.

Could not agree more. I hate the Celtics, probably the most among East teams honestly, but they are a good team and this is gonna be a tough series. I’m guessing we have at least 1 ejection, maybe even a suspension, and like 20 techs throughout the series.

They're gonna hide IT on Otto a lot Need OP to be a bit more aggressive this series. Could be the key when the backcourt battle is likely gonna be a draw.

Otto needs to shoot every single time IT is on him In fact everyone needs to do that, it’s not like you have to be 6’9" for a clean look over IT lol.

Celtics can't rebound to save their lives. It’s their Achilles heel. Robin Lopez was able to turn into Wilt Chamberlain against them. Markieff and Marcin are perfectly capable of flustering the Celtics just as badly.

IT has to guard someone It’s either Wall or Beal—so they need to pick their poison. Get him in foul trouble.

Nah, they'll put him on Otto Strategically.. You gotta involve Otto more, if only just to wear IT out.

I think this will be a great series, and I believe the Wizards have a good shot at taking it. IT is a terrific player, probably the best under 6’ since Iverson, but as Jeff said, Wall is a very tough match-up for him because of the size advantage with no worse than comparable speed. Hold the little dude in check and the Celtics are in a fair amount of trouble.

I think Gortat can beat Horford on the glass, but he’ll continue to struggle scoring and it will be hard for Gortat to defend Horford in space

All we have to do is contain IT and this series is over. They had to rely on damn rajon Rondo to Be hurt just to beat the bulls. Wizards will win This in 6

I'm a bit concerned about how bad our defense looked vs Hawks at times Atlanta was one of worst offensive teams in league meanwhile the Cs are more on our level offensively. It’s going to be a lot more work to slow them down.

The Wizards have to play smart and we win. We looked like the better team when we played them. The issues is that we didn’t face their full squad until the last game. Several times they were missing Horford or Bradley.

I see a ton of people already overrating the defensive aptitude of Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart (They're no Tony Allen or Danny green). Unless both Brad and John forget how to shoot, they aren't slowing down. You don't defend stars in the playoffs. You just try to contain them.

Smart is a damn good player. He makes countless big plays.

Despite our weak bench, Boston isn't best positioned to take advantage of it despite better depth. They struggle to score when Isaiah Thomas sits.

Brad has destroyed Smart. Abused him in all facets.

Anyone heard any reasoning from the NBA about why the quick turnaround compared to the teams who play Monday

Because it would only make sense to give Boston and Washington more days off than Toronto and Cleveland but They want to make sure the OLD AZZ Cavs have adequate rest so that they can quickly dispatch of Toronto.

If I was the Celtics coach I would definitely put IT on Porter, which would force Wall/Beal to give up a lot of shots to make them pay for the matchup. I am not so sure that Wall/Beal wouldn't continue looking to score first instead of consistently taking advantage of the mismatch.

The fact that there are fans here saying "easy win" should concern us. There are no easy wins in the playoffs. There are especially no easy wins in the playoffs against the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. This is going to be a great series and no cakewalk for either team.

The fan base on this board is so schizo. After Game 4, people were calling for EG's and Brooks' head, acting like we had already lost the series. Now, they're acting like defeating Boston is guaranteed

Beal has owned Smart. Absolutely dominates him. It makes me think Smart stinks, but that's not really fair. Smart is a pretty decent player against a lot of matchups, just not against Beal (so far).

But with Bradley back it's a different start. Bradley outscored Beal the last time they played. Note that Smart and Bradley both play 30 minutes+ in the playoffs, we'll be seeing a lot of different matchups, not necessarily Smart on Beal.

One thing I know forsure for next series: we will be outcoached. Brad Stevens will always be one step ahead

Yes. Bradley is good and will probably give Beal trouble. I just haven't seen any evidence to think that we need to worry much about Smart.

Personally worried about the way Wall isn't able to have huge offensive performances against the Celtics. He doesn't do a great job on IT either, IT averages 10 more points in the regular season matchups. Also, we haven't guarded the 3 point line well in the regular season and the playoffs, and literally every player on the Celtics shoots 3's.

I always feel good about a -Wall-Beal-Oubre-Porter core going into any series, no one can matchup with that athletically. High level talent, two way players. You structure your team around them and give them the big minutes, you win a lot of games.

With all members healthy I really don't see Wiz not closing out within 6. If Rondo didnt get hurt Wiz was likely be facing off with the Chicago Bulls in the 2nd.




The main edge for the Celtics is homeport advantage, which is substantial and is the main thing that gives me pause. Lacking Mahinmi given the hard luck bench hurts a lot too.

Wizards tone to start this series already diff from Round 1. Beal: "It's basketball, we're not fighting out here... Gonna keep it clean." Hopefully Morris is informed of this new stance and adjusts his deportment accordingly.

Boston didn't break Wall's hand in the playoffs, so you;d expect this to be hard, and trash talky but hopefully not dirty

This is what I really like about Olynyk. He cheats and will even get goon like he did with Kevin Love. Injury occurred, sadly, but it was a reasonable attempt at defense. 80s kind of physical is now dirty or mostly not allowed by refs.

They're not frauds. They play the right way on offense. Lots of ball movement and unselfishness. On defense, they are fundamentally sound and ALWAYS focused. They don't take plays off. There's a reason they are the #1 seed. There's also a reason that, despite arguably having more overall talent, we are the 4 seed. We don't play defense and our offense is streaky. We also have no bench.

Once the refs let the Celtics get away with the pushes without calling fouls, it was over. It took us out of the game...you get called on your end for fouls, and you don't get the same calls on the other end. Its more than a home court advantage.

Series over. Wizards have won game 1 in all their series in the Wall era. This will be the 1st game 1 loss. This game was also psychologically damaging. Wizards players will have PTSD from all the 3333s.

They are the better team with opponents injuries We’d and should be playing with Bulls, if not only Rondo’s injury. Now they’re so mighty when we’ve lost one of pillars of our team.

Losing to Atlanta was fine ... But losing to Boston is really unpleasant ...

What sucks too is Boston will get better this offseason They have more picks to get young and free salary cap space. We have to retain Otto, hope that Ian will stay healthy for once, and find a way to make Bogs a better player.

It has little to do with Markieff it’s the overall approach. Boston consistently plays hard and with discipline. Even when they were down, they looked steady and took it possession by possession. I can’t say it enough: Boston appears to have exponentially better coaching and preparation, mentally and tactically. The Wizards are clearly a more talented team, but that’s moot.

Boston reminds me of Houston the way they shoot 3's.

Outside of Thomas and Horford This team has very little pure talent. They have a lot of hard workers who play extraordinarily focused. They’re a disciplined team, and that comes from the top. This team barely makes the playoffs without Stevens, imo.

They have Brown and another top pick coming in this summer Plus they have their own first while we have a second. Really wish we had a better front office that could set us up like that.

Ainge was smart enough to find a stupid team and fleece them. He used his resources properly and capitalized on the investments. We are always playing catch up with Grunfeld, constantly trading away the future to make up for mistakes from the past. Give me Ainge every single day of the week and twice on Sunday over Grunfeld.

It is only one game, but Stevens is definitely getting a ton out of his guys while we are kind of flipping around like a fish out of water on both sides of the court.

Boston’s coaching >Washington’s coaching. That’s the only edge they have, and it’s a big one.

Competent depth is another thing they have that we don't.

The refs HELPED the Celtics back into the game. Yeah, the Celtics were hitting some shots, but they were getting those shots by doing shenanigans (with refs letting them).

I have been watching the NBA for darn near 50 years. I expect that in order to beat a team in their place you have to beat the referees too.

Not going to make excuses but I do think fatigue was a slight factor. Very quick turnaround. This should have been a night game.

There's another one...Beal does foul on that play. Problem here is that refs dont give us the same call on the other end. You cant win like that.

I'm not blaming the refs on this. We gave up 123 points. Celtics got whatever they want. They were more physical than us and out hustled us. They deserved it.

Its the fouls that werent called thats a problem. Not the number of fouls. Celtics were fouling a lot and getting away with it.

I think more mental fatigue than anything else. Playing uphill after a tough series is draining. Being on the road trying to catch up on short rest?

Always thought Bradley was a great defender. Smart is as long he doesn't maul people.

Thomas sux on defense but Bradley and Smart are terrific defenders.

I still don't trust Bostons shooters and they all are better than they think. They will soon be going 10-40 from downtown again

My only comment is Al Horford sliding his feet aka kobe career ender was disgraceful to say the least.

If coaches are to be compared, they got a better general IMO. We won't out coach them. They are number one seed for a lot of reasons, foremost IMO is their coach.

Stevens is a good coach. But c'mon, he's not that good.

I also think fatigue could've played a factor both physically and mentally but also just the fact of decompression. I think that our hot start was just adrenaline. After the Rondo injury and definitely after 2-2 that series was over. Chicago never really had a chance after the injury. However, we were still a legit 50/50 after 4 games against the Hawks and most thought it would go 7. Wall has the biggest game of his life but finds out immediately after that instead of celebrating or going back home, we have to go straight to Boston for a 1pm game. Then the Hawks win was on Friday so you don't even get to hear the media drool over Wall's big game. Basically I'm saying that I don't think we fully decompressed from the Hawks series yet. Boston will shoot 50 percent from 3 every game, we will shoot 50 percent at the ft line, and Wall will suck. The fact is that with the last 3 things I just named being heavily in Bostons favor, this was still a 3pt game midway through the 4th. Calm down. Horford played great. But its hardly surprising for people to doubt Boston, a team that has gone out in the first round each time, and then lost two at home to the #8 seed. If you ask most, they would say Boston would be bumped if not for Rondo's injury. Credit Boston though, their whole team came to play. Great shooting and effort in the the second half won this.

Not sure the Wizards played bad, the Celtics shot incredibly

Agreed Did the same thing to Beal in 2015 GM 1 with ATL. Stuck out his foot so that it would fall under Beal’s foot. Same exact play. Did Kieff dirty. BOS can have him.

Smart did the same thing to Beal I think in the 4th and was called for a foul.
They need to start calling that play a Flagrant 1. Its a sprained ankle just waiting to happen when they do that.
Sadly, not that I like this kind of ball, but Wizards might need to do the same back to them on a few plays.

fwiw Crowder has shot lights out vs us all season, 16-27 3pt so while yes they shot crazy good some of it has to be the types of looks we give them.

Horford started way slow but then sneakily killed us, 21pts/9reb/10asst is an elite game. He’s the guy we don't have any answer for without Ian and with no Kieff it’s doubly worse.

had Horford not have done Morris dirty like he did, I say we win that game.

For Stevens, the only givens are IT, Horford, Avery, Crowder and Smart. The rest is mix and match. He started Green and sat him very quickly during our initial surge, and after that no Green again. He gave Amir some run, and when that did not play out, Amir was out for most of the rest of the game. Olynyk was the X-factor in the 2nd quarter, not so much after that. Brown enters the game for the first time in the fourth and helps pour ice water on our late surge. It IS good coaching, but you have to have the bench players to do this. Alas, we do not have that kind of depth.

We need to sneak Marcus Morris into Keif's uniform. Who would know? Have him attend all our games. If Keef goes down, take him back to the locker room, and if he can’t continue, have him give his jersey to his bro and send "Keef" back out
