Celtics Come Full Circle with Trade for Will Bynum

Chris Forsberg is reporting that the Celtics are nearing a trade that would send Joel Anthony to Detroit for guard Will Bynum.
The Boston Celtics are working to finalize a trade that will send center Joel Anthony to the Detroit Pistons for guard Will Bynum, according to a league source.

The Celtics appear to be making the move with roster flexibility in mind. They have 16 fully guaranteed contracts on their books and must trim that to 15 before the start of the regular season. Swapping Anthony, who is set to make $3.8 million this season, for Bynum, who will earn $2.9 million, will save the team $900,000.
The move saves a little bit of cash, and it also makes it more likely that Danny was telling the truth when he said that Vitor Faverani is in the Celtics plans.   With the trade of Anthony, it makes the center depth a bit thin and makes it more likely that the Celtics plan on keeping Faverani.   If no other trades are made,  Bynum could be the final cut to get to 15 guaranteed contracts, given the depth that the Celtics already have at the guard spot.

This move brings the Celtics full circle.  Remember back to 2005, before the Celtics won their 17th championship.  They were a young team with Tony Allen, a defensive shooting guard, just entering his second season in the league.  The Celtics signed this same Will Bynum, who grew up in the same neighborhood as Tony, and the two Celtics were at a club celebrating Bynum's signing.

One thing led to another and there was a fight outside the club and Tony Allen ended up being arrested for battery.  The case was eventually dismissed and Tony continued to play for the Celtics.  Bynum, however, did not.   So, Bynum is back, but maybe not for long this time either.

  1. This is the disappearing roster spot. Next trade will be for $2.24M worth of players, the next for 1.712, and eventually for only non-guaranteed contracts. In fact the next one could be to Utah for Dahntay Jones and either Toure Murry or (Jack Cooley + Brock Motum), all of which are not guaranteed.
