Random Thoughts on Rondo, Camp Invites, the Roster and more

Yesterday we got the shocking news that Rajon Rondo had broken his hand in the shower and already had surgery.   Everyone rushed to post the news and speculate on what it would mean for the Celtics going into camp.  The consensus opinion was that the Captain's injury would be a setback for the team and a plus for Marcus Smart's learning curve.

It didn't take long for speculation to surface that Rondo was lying about how the injury happened.  Barstool Sports is reporting that Rondo was at a trampoline park the day before the news of the injury and speculates that the injury could have happened there.  They mention that WEEI contacted the GM of the trampoline park and were told that Rondo was there but didn't jump on the trampolines.  But, let's not let facts get in the way of a sensational story.  According to Jeff Goodman, Rondo was at the trampoline park for his daughter's birthday and didn't jump on the trampolines.
I've also seen speculation that, given Rondo's temper, the injury could have happened when he punched a wall or someone with whom he was having an argument.  I've even seen someone speculating that he didn't really break his hand and it's all a conspiracy for the Celtics to tank again this season for a better draft pick.  I've also read some reports that the injury is one typically suffered with a closed fist, which would support the punching the wall or someone theories.

Personally, unless I'm told differently,  I'll believe that Rondo slipped in the shower, as unbelievable as that might be.  There have been stranger injuries in the league.  Perk broke his toe when he was moving a bed and the bed frame dropped on his foot.  Fab Melo got a concussion when he ran into a door frame.  Francisco Garcia injured himself when the exercise ball he was using to work out popped before team practice. Derrick Rose once missed time when he needed 10 stitches to close a gash on his arm that he got when he said he rolled onto a knife while eating an apple in bed.

Not really an injury, but Dwight Gooden was once put in the hospital due to an infected hair follicle. Lionel Simmons missed two games when he developed tendonitis in his right wrist from playing too many video games. Muggsy Bogues was benched for the second half of a game because he accidentally inhaled muscle ointment at half time. Going back a bit farther, Charles Barkley was once placed on the injured list with a burned cornea after the lights at an Eric Clapton concert he attended were too bright. So, I guess slipping in the shower isn't the strangest injury a player has ever had. We should hear more about Rondo's injury on Monday during Media Day.

The Celtics are playing musical chairs with their camp invites. Yesterday morning it was reported that the Celtics waived camp invite Christian Watford in the wake of the Cleveland trade. Today it is being reported that the Celtics have re-signed Watford to a training camp contract. It's a bit of an odd move, but it's all in the numbers. Teams cannot make off season trades that put a roster at more than 20 players. The Celtics waived Johnson and Babb when they made the trade. That still put them at 21 players, so Watford was also waived. We should also hear shortly that the Celtics have also waived newly acquired John Lucas III and Malcolm Thomas, both of whom are on non guaranteed contracts. That will give them room for Watford's training camp contract and also to officially sign Evan Turner.

With the addition of Dwight Powell, who the Celtics reportedly like and plan to keep around, at least through training camp, the Celtics have 3 Canadians on the team. With Powell, Olynyk and Anthony already there, all the Celtics need to do is to bring in Nash and Bennett and they could field an all Canadian team.

The Celtics will still have 16 guaranteed contracts once they sign Turner, which is going to happen before training camp starts according to Danny Ainge. That means they have to waive a guaranteed contract or they have to make another trade. I've seen much speculation that Brandon Bass may be on the way out, given that he put his home on the market. The Celtics have a couple of good young prospects at the power forward spot and Bass may be disgruntled to be benched. He complained some last year when he was coming off the bench. Whether Danny makes another trade, or he waives a player with a guaranteed contract, at least one more move is on the way.

  2. Maybe both. But I remember when Perk dropped the bed frame on his toe.

  3. As always FLCeltsFan, your random thoughts spur more synapse firings than most doctoral dissertations (well, o.k., bad analogy since most dissertations are severely soporific). In roughly the same order as your paragraphs:

yellow press--dog bites man, 8th page below the column; man bites dog, front page above the fold. Which reminds me that when some "new age" bloggers were dredging up the Tree Rollins biting incident to support their other misguided criticisms of Ainge by citing him as the biter, you rose to the defense by pointing out that it actually was Tree biting Danny (although I'm sure Danny was the

    instigator, much to Red's satisfaction!).

roster size--is this saga starting to sound like a game of musical chairs run amok?

as for all those players from the northern clime's--pretty cool, eh

Ah, Danny will probably blow us all away with six more moves during training camp.

    1. Red sure did love his instigators, didn't he?

Danny, Brad, and Wyc have constantly said that they want to keep Rondo, All have said that he is a big part of what they are doing and yet every day I see blog posts stating that he is on his way out, that he is on shaky ground, etc.

Yep, I can see Danny pulling off a bunch of trades all in one day to completely revamp the roster on the last day of training camp :)
