SQ14 #29 Need a Roster Spot for, Just Who Exactly?

Rather than a treatise of reasoning, I would like to make this Summer quandary just that, a puzzling question.  Much has been made of the 15 guaranteed contracts and the need for Ainge to do something about the roster.  So answer me this:  if Danny waved his magic wand and pulled an open roster spot out of his hat, just who would you propose he put into that slot?

I mean, I am all in favor of buying out Joel Anthony for $2M; but who will you replace him with on the October 30 roster to open the season?

Only 36 more days until training camp.[Discuss on CG Forums!]

  1. Greg Monroe of course! By hook or by crook!

  2. Yeah, the devil is in those hook or crook details. Sounds like he may take qualifying offer. If so I don't think he will want to stay with Detroit next summer. He isn't the rim protector that many are crying for, but I think he would permit an inside/outside attack that hasn't been an option since Jefferson left. I kept hoping some variant of a Bass for Monroe deal could be worked out. I don't really think he is worth the max contract he seems to think is his value, but I could see 5/50 or 4/44 as workable.

  3. Right now, there are no free agents that I think are worth going after. Danny may be able to work some magic with a trade. I'm still not sure exactly what we need other than a true defensive center. Could Vitor or Zeller fill that need. It's possible. Personally, I'd love to have Perk back but I don't see that happening. I believe that OKC realizes his value in their defense. Monroe would be a nice addition but as you said, Lee, he's not the rim protector that we really need. Maybe next summer the Celtics can get him as a free agent. I don't see it happening this year.

    1. FLC, I see Perk as the type of Center to get if we had made the Love trade, basically a stop-gap measure. Your mentioning him does bring up an interesting point. Perkins is not a rim protector, he is a paint protector. He doesn't depend upon soaring to provide effective defense but rather positioning and force. I'm pretty sure there is a SQ topic here. Thanks to you, and Rick, and Anon for nudging the little grey cells.

What about Okafor? He's recovering from a injury but is a free agent. Would be a nice pick up looking for next year.

  5. Anon, Okafor would likely be for no more than a season, maybe two. For the Pierce/Garnett Celtics, perfect, for a rebuild, just takes minutes away from Zeller/Faverani who are much more likely to be in the C's future. Now if Danny had been able to pull off the Love trade, then Okafor for sure.

Give me a center who can rebound, block shoots and shoot above 70 % from the free throw line.
