Marcus Smart Invited to USA Select Team

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Marcus Smart has been invited to participate in the USA Basketball Select Team. The USA Select team is a collection of many of the most promising young NBA players to compete against the US national team in scrimmages and drills. All of the players will have a chance to play for Team USA in the future. Participating on the Select Team, they will be able to learn from some of the elite players in the world and gain valuable experience as they practice against them.

The USA Men's National Team will hold a training camp from July 28-August 1 in Las Vegas. Nineteen players have been selected to participate on the Men's National Team, who will be practicing against the Select Team. These include Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Korver, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Derrick Rose, and Klay Thompson. No Celtics have been invited to play on the Men's National Team.

Rondo participated on Team USA back in 2010, but ended up withdrawing from the team just before the final cut was made and four days prior to the start of the FIBA World Championship in Turkey. Pierce was a member of the United States national team for the 2002 FIBA World Championship, starting all nine games and averaging 19.8 points per game. He was also selected for the United States national team for the 2006 FIBA World Championship, but did not compete because of minor off-season surgery. Of course, Larry Bird was on the original Dream Team. Other than that, there hasn't been much interaction between the Celtics and Team USA. Maybe Marcus Smart will change  that.

  1. Barring an injury, this is a significant bonus for Smart and the Celtics. Practicing with the cream of the NBA youngsters and playing against the better experienced players will be a benefit for Marcus' development and a head start for camp. What a great development.
