Celtics Fall to Miami Despite Jeff Green's 43
Monday, March 18, 2013
Comments:
Sorry, but I have to agree more with your colleague Jack Niemuth's assessment; this was a terrible loss due to a pathetic effort. Rather than reassure me, this game makes me less hopeful than ever that we have a run in us. Just like we have many times over the last four years, we will find a way to lose.

From squandering double-digit second half leads to losing playoff series despite a 3-2 lead (which we have done 3 out of the last 4 years, when no Celtic team before had ever done so)this team just makes it too much of a habit to lose from ahead. This latest blown effort does nothing to give me confidence at all.

I see this game somewhere in the middle. I don't think there was a lack of effort. I think there was a lack of execution at times and some of that could be because they were filling in the holes left by KG's absence. I sure would love to get this Jeff Green on a regular basis though. Unfortunately the next game he may disappear again.

I also think the worst thing to happen to a team like the Celtics is for one player to score 40+. They are best when everyone is contributing. When one player goes off like that, the others relax. It's too much hero ball and hero ball rarely wins.

I'm not sure I'd classify it as effort... Your facing the hottest team in the NBA with the best player in the NBA. On a night when your playing without argueably the Celtics best player, KG.

Obviously history has shown the Celtics fall victim to late game or series collapses. But at this point in the year without Rondo, Sully, Barbosa, and KG temporarily did you think this team could even compete on this level with Miami?!

I think this team showed heart with their play and Doc Rivers couldn't have said it better postgame; "Overall, besides not winning the game, we passed the test,'' Rivers said. "But losing the game is what you'll remember."

When I mentioned their poor effort, I perhaps should have used another word because I did not think this team played lazy. They just played extremely poorly. And as you mentioned, it is an historical pattern with this team to have ill-tiimed collapses. What I saw last night is a continuation of the trend. The Celtics will not accomplish anything unless they learn how to close, which they are very poor at. Last night did little to make me feel they can close out an elite team.

The quote I agree with from Doc is that "I thought we were going to win the game, I thought we would win during the game, and I thought we should have won the game."

Agreed that closing is a problem for this team. As much as I love and appreciate Paul Pierce, I think the time has come for something other than a Pierce ISO or Pierce for the game winner as our last shot. Time for Doc to go to a different closing play.
