With the Celtics move to waive Kris Joseph and Jarvis Varnado, there has come a wave of speculation and rumors.
Ben Rohrbach on WEEI Green Street gives possible reasons for waiving the two players ahead of the deadline to guarantee their contracts.
These moves save the Celtics a few hundred thousand dollars, which doesn’t sound like much, but it opens the possibility of adding a veteran minimum talent like Kenyon Martin down the road.
2) The departures of Joseph and Varnado free up the team’s final two roster spots. Considering Danny Ainge‘s rumored interest in just about every big on the market, including DeMarcus Cousins and Marcin Gortat, the Celtics could take on additional players or slightly more dollars in a potential trade.
Chris Forsberg on ESPN thinks that Danny will bide his time using 10 day contracts to fill out the roster until he makes his move. He also feels that the Celtics' level of play will determine what that move will be.
The question is whether Danny Ainge can find something to his liking on the trade market, or whether he will settle for the best available champion-chaser at the waiver deadline. Ultimately, Boston's ability to maintain its current level of play should dictate Ainge's approach. If Boston continues to play inspired defense, a minor move could suffice; a regression to their late-December ways might encourage Ainge to get a little more creative.
Scott Souza feels that Sully or Avery only included if an All Star comes in return and that unless the team totally falls apart, KG, Pierce and Rondo not included in any deals.
A Sherrod Blakely feels that the Celtics are positioning themselves for a multiplayer trade.
Two league sources contacted on Sunday said that the Celtics will look to bolster their roster via a multi-player trade.
And now that the C's are starting to play better, the C's will have more attractive trading pieces to work with.
While it's unlikely the Celtics will look to move any member of their big Three - Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett - league sources confirmed that there's "growing" interest in Courtney Lee who might become more expendable with the return of Avery Bradley.
Brandon Bass is another possible Celtic on the move, one league source said.
"But it's not like the Celtics are shopping those guys," the second source said. "They have some good players who haven't played as well I think as those players would want or what the Celtics expected."

NBAonNBC.com is really stirring the pot saying he feels that Danny is working to bring Cousins and Gay to Boston in a blockbuster trade in the next day or so. He adds that the potential hold up on the deal is the availability of Bradley vs Courtney Lee. But then, Sam Amick shoots that down with this tweet.
Get ready for the roller coaster ride between now and the trading deadline. In spite of the rabid rumors that have Twitter all atwitter, I believe that Danny will still be patient and wait to see how the team continues to play before making a big move. Hopefully Avery, Sully, Pierce, KG and Rondo are off the table.
