I like what I heard from Darko. Sounds like he has matured and that he's ready to play a role on the team.
“I talked with Doc (Rivers) on the phone and he said there is not anybody here who has the weight of the team on his shoulders,” Milicic said yesterday. “This is a team. It’s not about one guy.”
"All I’m looking for now is to be the best I can be. It’s not about me being the second pick; it’s about me being the best I can be. I had some chances, and that was my fault, too. But we all make some mistakes. I didn’t take some things serious that I should have. But I’m here now. Let’s make the best of it.”
“I’m going to do whatever it takes. It’s not about me anymore. It’s a great opportunity for me. Doc’s going to put me where I fit the best.”
This may be one of Danny's biggest signings if Doc can finally get the talent that is clearly there out of him. It's not like he's over the hill and looking for one last shot (cough cough Rasheed Wallace) He's still 27 years old. It sounds as though in the past, because of that 2nd pick thing he was expected to be a lot more than he was ready for. On the Celtics, he will finally get to be a part of a team, play a role, and get to play to his strengths. I'm liking this signing more and more.
I'm liking Jared Sullinger more and more. I think he's my new favorite player on the Celtics. I mean, what's not to like about a kid who loves his mother??? First he said that he wouldn't be getting any tattoos because he promised his mother he wouldn't. Yesterday, he said that he picked #7 because his mother's birthday is in July and that's the 7th month. He said that his mom is his inspiration. Oh my, I love this kid!!!!!
Amid all the Celtics talk yesterday was the little gem that Rasheed Wallace was taking a physical for the Knicks and was planning to join them this season, assuming that after 2 years out of the game, he can still pass a physical. I'm not sure, but I think the Knicks are going for a record here. They signed 38 year old Marcus Camby, 39 year old Jason Kidd, 39 year old Kurt Thomas, and now are planning to sign 38 year old Rasheed Wallace. They're going to have the oldest bench in NBA history.
I sure hope that Sheed is in better shape than he was when he played for Boston. He never did get into shape and just loped up and down the court, mostly out of breath. I am still convinced that the refs stole game 7 from the Celtics because they weren't about to let Sheed, a known ref hater, get another ring. I think Sheed knew it also, whether they said something to him or he just knew it. He stormed the referees' locker room after the game, demanding to talk to them and had to be pulled away. Good luck with that, Knicks.
According to Danny Ainge, the Celtics do not have the bi-annual exception this year. This would eliminate the thoughts many of us had of them bringing in a impact vet mid-year unless it's by trade. I guess with having to pay Keyon plus signing Darko, using the BAE would go above the luxury tax apron that they must stay below because they used the full $5 million MLE to sign Jason Terry. I'm ok with that. I really like the team we have.
Ray Allen has definitely burned his bridges in Boston. KG doesn't have his number any more. That says it all. KG regularly talks to Perk still. And Stiemsma mentioned this summer that KG checked in with him. So, it's not because he left. It's the way he left. I loved JT's response when he was asked how he would replace Ray Allen. "Who?" Yep, Ray Allen is history in Boston.
Doc's efforts to get everyone to hate the Heat hasn't really worked with KG. KG isn't going to center his loathing on just one team. He hates everyone.
“Personally, it’s just not just the Heat, but everybody, you know?” Garnett said. “The goal here is to win it, man, and whoever’s in the way of that is in the way. It’s just not Miami, it’s the whole league.”
Here is a behind the scenes look at media day yesterday. KG even looks scary when he's having fun.
