After taking $12 million over 2 seasons from the Celtics and playing in a grand total of 49 games, Jermaine O'Neal had the nerve to say that the Celtics weren't a good fit for him and he's looking forward to finding a situation with a better role for him. WHAT???!!!
Jermaine O'Neal was set to be the Celtics starting center. He was playing with one of the best point guards in the league who was ready to find him anytime he got to the basket. He was considered by Doc Rivers to be the MVP of training camp last season. All he had to do was stay healthy and play 20 minutes or so a game. But I guess that was too much for him to handle. Now, he's bad mouthing the Celtics while he's trying to sign on with the rival Lakers. I say good riddance.
I'm not sure what his idea of a better role would be. Maybe a team that will pay him $6 million a year to play 10 games. Or maybe he wants to get paid and not play at all.
UPDATE
According to the Herald, JO felt that the Celtics didn't let him score enough.
“Sometimes when you’re asked not to worry about some of the stronger parts of your game, which is scoring, and only [focus on] defense, that’s difficult to do.”
“I’m not stupid,” O’Neal said. “I don’t think I can go for 20 every night anymore, but I do believe I can go for 20 on any given night. It’s just about finding a position whether it’s coming off the bench or starting, whether its 15 minutes or 30 minutes, whatever the coaches ask you to do it’s just about having the opportunity to be yourself. I just want to get to the level that I know I’m physically right.
Could be the Celtics expected too much from him. They asked him to be a team player and do what the team needed. What a loser. Feel free to sound off with your feelings on JO in the comments.
