The old get older, and better.
Yahoo Sports reports that the Boston Celtics are "in final discussions" for a deal for Mavericks G free agent Jason Terry. Yahoo reports the move does not necessarily take them out of the running for Ray Allen.
Terry is a major get for the Celtics, as they continue to retool towards another run with the Big 3. CSN New England reports that the deal is for the full MLE from Boston, worth $5 million per year. SI.com notes that that will leave just $24 million for the Celtics to sign four players. With Jeff Green expected to ask for upwards of $9 million per year and a reported offer from Boston for Ray Allen in at $6 million per year for two years, that leaves just $9 million to sign Brandon Bass and another veteran. But it would give the Celtics a phenomenally stacked roster...
If this was 2008.
Terry started to show signs of slowing down last season, but it's not known whether that's due to a hangover from the Mavericks' 2011 championship celebration, the lockout, or a fluke. He'll benefit from wide open three-pointer opportunities and give the Celtics another scoring option off the bench. He shot just 43 percent from the field last season but 38 percent from the arc. He'll be 35 on opening night.
ESPN reports that Terry will provide Dallas the opportunity to match the offer.
The Celtics are turning into the basketball version of "Space Cowboys."
