Comments from the Other Side - Jazz

by FLCeltsFan 8:40 AM
I'm going to be in NYC tomorrow for this game. Normally, I would be reluctant to find a bar in New York and ask them to turn on the Jazz game. But, considering that we're playing visciously hated Bahstahn, I could prb get away with cheering for Utah in my brown D-Will jersey. KG and the quest for the Holy Fail. Let's take down the smack talkin C's and get on a roll! Nationally televised game against a huge opponent = all but for sure WIN.
To me this is almost (emphasis on that last word) a must win game. Nows the time to get hot, and wins over the two leading teams in the NBA within the space of a week and a half would be a phenomenal statement by an 80% recuperated Jazz team. Look for Deron to have a huge game. Williams, Rondo will be a dangerous matchup. Rondo is a good defender, and doesn't have to do much else than specialize on stopping Williams. Well, we have a days rest. The Celtics haven't played since the all-star break. Maybe they will be rusty...or well rested? If okur is back we have a punchers chance. I look forward to seeing DWill exact his revenge on Rondo for the game @ Boston. In Boston we got rondo'd. it's time for some payback! This classic Rivalry produced probably the best film of the 90's, and maybe the Best Basketball film of all time.
That's the greatest movie ever btw, its the only time we ever win anything. If that punk KG messes up with Memo cuz he's a white Euro, he'll be in a hell of a trouble! I want to see some Jazzman taunt right at KG. (from a Laker fan) Even though you guys beat us in the last outing we are pulling for you guys tonight. Don't CHOKE! Play with that same fire you guys did against us & the Celtics will wilt under pressure! I don't know how I feel about the support we're getting from these Laker fans. It's kind of like having your boss giving you a back rub while you make love to the love of your life. LOL at the Jazz...we suck bad right now. Everyones scared to take it inside. Ive never seen so many "clean" blocks in one quarter. Shooting less than 20%, pathetic We suck. Celtics are smothering us
OUr guys got blocked a few times, and now everyone is SCARED to take the ball inside. AK cant get by Big Baby? Really? OMG Scalibriene for MVP. WTF does Deron have to do for a call? Change his last name to Paul? Well we survived at half we are down just 1. This is the best defensive team we've faced this year. Perkins is really a great defender inside, we haven't had many points in the paint. So we'll have to work extra hard on the offensive side if we are to win this game. I'm calling it.. KG torn Achilles tendon... Sucks for him, I like KG a lot, but that thing went on the jump and that's a strong indicator for that injury. Gone for the year. Or it could be a bad cramp. Who knows. I hope for him its not serious, I hope for us its enough to keep him out of the 2nd half. Jazz this close when only shooting mid 20%. Free throws keeping jazz in the game. Refs being VERY kind to the Jazz tonight. Celtics getting called for a lot of fantom fouls wile Jazz getting away with a lot If KG doesn't come back in the 2nd half, we might have a shot at this. Perkins is the one I wish was out...he is killing memo. As much as I like KG, I hate Paul Pierce. So cocky, even though he did absolutely nothing in Boston until KG and Allen showed up on white horses. Umm I don't like Pierce much either but 7 games in the east finals with Pig Walker as your sidekick is something. You could say the same about Allen and Garnett too. Man we are getting some crazy calls right now...even I will admit that. If we win this game tonight we need to send the refs a thank you note. We are dodging a bullet. There has been some nocalls left and right. There were some questionable no calls in our favor, but I don't give a ****. A win is a win. We got lucky. Losing Garnett was HUGE. I hope that dude is okay. That would be a tragedy and rob us of excellent Eastern Conference playoffs. We also got some calls against this team for whatever reason against this team. I hate to admit it, but the refs gave us this game. As bad as we shot, they kept us in it.
Hey, sometimes you get calls and sometimes you don't. We won and that is all that counts. If the Celtics are as good as they think they are, they could overcome a few bad calls. But they aren't that good. waaaaaay over hyped.

An After the Trade Deadline Primer
Thursday, February 19, 2009
by FLCeltsFan 8:31 PM
The trade deadline has come and gone and the Celtics only made a couple of minor moves without bringing in any new players. They traded Patrick O'Bryant and Sam Cassell and in return got 2 open roster spots that we can assume will be filled by free agents who will be waived by their teams. The rumors have been swirling about 4 players in particular.
Stephon Marbury 2008-09 Statistics PPG 0.0 RPG 0.00 APG 0.0 EFF ? Born: Feb 20, 1977 Height: 6-2 / 1,88 Weight: 205 lbs. / 93,0 kg. College: Georgia Tech Years Pro: 12 Rumors have been swirling around about him since the beginning of the season. He has been in the dog house in New York the entire season and there have also been rumors of a buyout all season. If he indeed does get a buyout, the Celtics are rumored to be at the top of his wish list but there have also been other teams rumored to be interested in him should be be freed from New York. The Knicks were active at the deadline and brought in Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox. They may be willing to buyout Marbury, but I wouldn't bet on it.
2008-09 Statistics PPG 0.0 RPG 0.00 APG 0.0 EFF ? Born: Nov 18, 1975 Height: 6-1 / 1,85 Weight: 180 lbs. / 81,6 kg. College: Florida Years Pro: 10 Word has come out that Jason Williams has petitioned the league to be reinstated from his retirement. There is speculation that he will either go back to the Heat or sign with the Celtics. The Clippers hold his rights, but would likely just waive him rather than trying to get him to play for them.
2008-09 Statistics PPG 6.6 RPG 4.50 APG 0.7 EFF + 8.67 Born: Jul 26, 1975 Height: 6-10 / 2,08 Weight: 225 lbs. / 102,1 kg. College: Maryland Years Pro: 13 There have been rumors of a Joe Smith buyout or of him being waived for quite a while now. This seemed to be at an end when he was traded to the Hornets in the Chandler deal. But the Chandler trade fell through and Smith stayed put at the deadline which had led to more talk of a buyout. It was reported that after returning to OKC, he was keeping his fingers crossed that he wouldn't be traded so that he could be bought out and sign with the Celtics.
2008-09 Statistics PPG 3.5 RPG 3.30 APG 0.6 EFF + 5.96 Born: Nov 4, 1975 Height: 7-0 / 2,13 Weight: 225 lbs. / 102,1 kg. College: Nebraska Years Pro: 10 One of the names that surfaced just today was Mikki Moore who has already been bought out by the Kings to make room for Will Solomon. It was reported by several sources that Moore would end up in Boston. If we can't get Smith, Mikki Moore would be a nice consolation prize.
2008-09 Statistics PPG 0.0 RPG 1.00 APG 0.0 EFF + 1.00 Born: May 7, 1976 Height: 6-11 / 2,11 Weight: 230 lbs. / 104,3 kg. College: Penn State Years Pro: 9 Finally, the Globe noted that the Celtics would have interest in Calvin Booth who was traded from the Wolves to the Kings and who may be waived by them as well. This one puzzles me. Booth hasn't really done anything in his 9 year career and I don't know why we would expect him to start now. This would be my least favorite option.
One plus is that the Cavs and Lakers didn't do anything either. But, the Cavs will figure to be a foe in the bidding for both Moore and Smith. The Cavs also are looking to add a big man and can offer more than the Celtics to lure one in. Both teams are contenders but the Celtics have KG and their storied history to offer as well. If it comes down to the money, Cleveland has $5.135 million of its midlevel exception left, and Boston has $2.392 million of its midlevel remaining. There will probably be more names added as players are waived or bought out, but this is what is out there now. In order to be included on a playoff roster, players have to be waived before March 1 so we have 10 more days to watch and wait to see what Danny comes up with to fill the two roster spots he cleared.

Cassell Traded to Kings - Reactions
Tuesday, February 17, 2009
by FLCeltsFan 9:10 AM
According to ESPN, the Celtics have traded Sam Cassell to the Kings for cash considerations and a very heavily protected second round pick. There are lots of opinions as to what this means for both franchises.
The general consensus among Celtics fans is that this is a move to open up a roster space to sign a free agent whether it be Stephon Marbury, Robert Horry, or PJ Brown (in spite of his insistence otherwise). It isn't as clear as to what the Kings get out of the deal in that they basically give up nothing since they get the cash to cover Sam's salary and will likely waive him anyway and the second round pick is heavily protected so it doesn't figure in to the Celtics' plans. If Sam is waived by the Kings I wouldn't be surprised to see the Celtics sign him as an assistant coach for the rest of the season.
There are rumors of the Maloofs being cash strapped both in their personal dealings and with the Kings. This may simply be a move to save some cash or it may be payback for a favor Danny did for them, or it may be the precursor to another deal to come where they have to have salaries to match up in the deal. One thing is fairly certain, there is more to this trade than just the trade of a player to help the team.
Here are some reactions from the Kings boards:
No big deal. It's no secret the Maloofs are trying to cut payroll. They're getting an expiring contract and cash back. I don't think there's anything more to it...
Celtics paid for an open roster spot. Although... is it horrible to think that Cassell could actually be our starting pg?
If it enables the Celtics to get Marbury, and Marbury helps the Celtics beat the Lakers, then it is all right by me.
Poor Sam...from the best team in the league to the worst team in the league... haha...
Maybe Beno is gonna be moved (Good news for the Kings) Maybe the Celtics are getting ready for Marbury (Irrelevant news for the Kings) Maybe the Kings can't find trade partners anymore(Bad news for the Kings) Maybe the Kings front office are just plain dumb! (Not news anymore)
Sam might be worth a little more then we think, he knows the Celts system. Their stregnths and weaknesses, and hes a vet guard with championship exp... I'm thinking/hoping he is part of a bigger trade for us.
Start Cassell! I would seriously start an old Sam Cassell over this crappy Beno Udrih.
Hopefully, this leads to something better. But can it be possible if this is a three team deal? I just don't make too much sense if this is plainly a Sac-Boston deal.
Egads -- so we are now again one of those bottomfeeding teams that sells its assets for operating money huh? Wonderful. But yeah, upside is maybe its protection in a planned Beno trade. We'll know within 48 hours or so.
maybe it is Geoff's attempt to import a "winning mentality" (guy has three rings), even though said winning mentality has just as often been a cancer when he's not happy, and I can only imagine him being not so happy about losing out on another ring so he can come to the worst team in the league. Should also be noted that Sam's "winning mentality" never involved defense, which is of course the very worst thing we do, and what ismost desperately in need of an upgrade.
Sam has coaching aspirations -- longest of long shots, could we be importing our next coach in training? I always assumed he would have to do the assistant coaching rounds, but...?
This trade isn;t for the Kings. this is Petrie doing a favor for the Celts. Building good graces for potential future deals. This deal - 1) Gets the Celts under the lux tax 2) Creates a roster spot for the Celts 3) the pick will NEVER switch hands as it is HEAVILY protected 4) the 500,000 dollars will off-set the remaining 2 months of Cassell's salary while having a some surplus for the Kings. This is more gaining good karma for the Kings with a couple bucks. But this was the Celtics approaching the Kings to do them a favor and since it doesn't hurt the Kings they said sure.
If we buy out E.T. like I think we will, this deal will basically come down to the Kings selling a future 2nd round pick! If E.T. suits up and plays for the Kings, then I think Beno is on the way out and Cassell helps Bobby Brown excel!
I'm sorry but when does Petrie get fired? Now we have Alien and Preda-Moore on our team...all we need now is sign Sigourney Weaver to balance it out
Here is some reaction from the Celtics' boards:
the trade is w/e really, it will help the celts get someone later on for the playoffs, and the kings won't really get much *not that it matters for them* but he is stil better than BENO lol even if he is liek 126 years old in basketball years
strange move.....maybe this is a sign Marbury is getting bought out.
I really hope the lakers, cavs etc dont make a play for Sam if he does get waived, not necissarily because of his play, but he would know the celtics inside and out by know.. especially Rondo
Wow this is big... Surely he wouldn't be freeing up a roster spot for nothing? I'm disappointed Cassell won't be on our bench anymore. I think he really helped out the team mentally.
He will probably be waived by Sacramento and I imagine he will like to go back to Boston as an assistant coach.
The 2nd round pick is heavily protected. We will never get it. SAC made the trade to get some cash, we made it to open up a roster spot...
The part that isn't reported is that the Kings gave up a wink and a nod, and received a big, fat, "You Owe Us" from the Celtics.
I wonder if the C's are trying to get involved in a three way deal of some sort to pick up a vet. They could be muscling into a 2-way deal by agreeing to take some salary or kick in the $3 million allowed. That would greatly expand the options for trades, as our bilateral trade scenarios seem limited.
If we waived Sam and nobody picked him off waivers his salary would still count against the cap. This way we got rid of his salary, saved some money and opened up a roster spot...
While Sam is making around $1.2 million, the team is only paying him $797,581; the league subsidizes the rest for veteran salaries. The team is through 63.4% of its schedule, and Sam has earned that amount of his salary. That means he's owed approximately $291,798 for the rest of the season by whatever team is paying him. So, in the case, a $500,000 cash payment gives the Kings over $200,000 in their pocket, plus whatever additional savings they can get by buying Sam out. The Celtics, on the other hand, save the $291,788 owed to Sam, plus luxury tax on the *entire* $797,581. That means the team is paying $500,000 to save $1,089,369. It's my understanding that if the team signs another player to the veteran minimum, they only have to pay luxury tax on the pro-rated salary of that player.
Here’s where things get interesting. If the team was planning on bringing Sam back, financially this may make sense. If Sam stayed on the team the entire season, the Celts would have owed him roughly $1.6 million in salary plus luxury tax. If he comes back with roughly 20 games left, (and if and only if the league treated Sam like any other minimum-salaried player) the team would only owe him approximately $389,000 in salary plus luxury tax: ($797,581 * 20/82s, doubled). Thus, if their plan is to only have Sam play a limited number of games prior to the playoffs, this trade would allow them to do so, while getting them approximately $205,000 in savings after paying Sacramento off ($1.6 million combined salary pre-trade – $505,666 paid salary to date – $389,000 current luxury tax – $500,000 to Sacramento = $205,334). This assumes that the league treats Sam as any other minimum salaried player the team adds for the stretch run, rather than viewing this as a means of circumventing the salary cap.
Who's going to be the 7th coach now?
Freeing up a roster spot. it wouldn't suprise me to a package centered around Powe or Baby Very soon
Everyone say thank you to Sam Cassell, because like Devean George being able to nix the Jason Kidd trade, Sam had to agree to this trade
So, what I take from this is that Cassell was basically resigned with the understanding that it's an internship-like deal toward coaching. All this trade means is the internship with Boston concluded. His salary was to be used toward housing expenses, for meals, his own cleaning of all uniforms and basketball supplies like socks, sneakers, wristbands or headbands, for paying his own way with the team for road games and other personal needs. This is a new program began this season by the Boston Celtics for players near retirement inspiring to gain a position of future employment in the field of NBA head coach or assistant coach.
Sam's stat line for the year: GP: 0 PTS: 0 AST: 0 STL: 0 T's: 2
Sam will not play as a back up pg for any team this year. PG is the hardest position and he has not left the bench all year. He is, by all accounts a good locker room guy and a mentor for young players. His value is in that role, not as a player.Good move by Danny.
One other consideration: the trade creates a trade exception equal to Sam's salary, that the Celtics can use to bring in another player without sending out salary. This exception lasts for a calendar year. For instance, the Celtics could trade a future draft pick this week to a team looking to cut salary. Obviously, this would nullify any payroll gains from the Cassell trade--but as others have said, those gains aren't as important as a title for the Celtics.
Trust me, we haven't seen the last of Sam Cassell. He will be back to the Celtics in some form. Maybe he will take Lucky's spot for the rest of the year

The Rise of Rajon
Sunday, February 15, 2009
by Unknown 12:55 AM
We Celtics fans know he's good. But do we really know how good?
Keep in mind, he's only 22 (23 in a week), and he's only in his 3rd season.
-He's 4th in the entire league in assists, with 8.5 apg (and this number is rising)
-He's 4th in the entire league in steals, with 2 per game (keep in mind, he plays less minutes than the 3 guys ahead of him)
-Among PG's, he's 2nd in rebounding with 5.4 per (Kidd is first, but he's got 4 inches on Rajon)
-He's 12th in scoring among PG's (11.2 ppg), but even this is quite impressive, considering how unselfish he is. But he is looking for his offense more than before, and its not out of reason that next year, he could be around 15 per game. In his prime, he could be a 17 per game scorer--especially with his jumper improving the way it has been.
Here's a really young PG who has had to learn how to orchestrate a championship level team with 3 future Hall of Fame candidates. Not only has he learned how to keep them all happy, but he's also learned how to be a developing force in his own right.
Way to go, Rajon.
