Celtics at Nets in Pictures 1/17

Ray Allen again led the way with 25 points and 1 rebound in 30 minutes of play.
Scal continued his impressive play as he once again filled in for Perk in the starting lineup. He finished with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Pierce had a quiet game doing a little of everything with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 35 minutes. The starters once again got a rest in the 4th quarter as the reserves did a good job of closing out the game.
Rondo dominated Devin Harris for the second game in a row scoring 8 points, pulling down 9 rebounds, grabbing 2 steals, and dishing out 14 assists. He is back to his aggressive play that led the Celtics through their 27-2 start.
Bill Walker played 12 minutes and finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds and he also was assessed a technical for a shove on the Nets' Ryan Anderson. Gabe Pruitt continued to play well as he led the second unit for 18 minutes and finished with 3 pints, 1 rebound, 2 assists and 1 steal in 18 minutes. I love having Pruitt at the point and Eddie House at the 2. House plays better when he doesn't have to run the offense and he finished with 13 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal. Leon Powe had a nice game offensively with 12 points, 1 rebound and 1 block.
Like Pierce, KG had a quite game and did a little of everything, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists in 27 minutes.
The Celtics controlled the game from start to finish for the second game in a row. This game got a bit chippy with a few technicals and some rough play but in the end, the Nets didn't put up much of a fight and the Celtics walked away with the 105-85 win.

Random Thoughts on a Rare Friday Off
by FLCeltsFan 9:36 AM
The Celtics are finally catching a break in the schedule and will have their second day off in a row today. Add that to the starters having the 4th quarter off on Wednesday night, and they are getting some very much needed rest and also some much needed practice time. With several players nursing bumps and bruises, it is also some much needed healing time.
Bill Walker got some good press this morning with articles on him in the Globe and the Herald. I really like this kid. In every quote, he shows that he gets how much work is needed to succeed and he seems very willing to put in the work, whether it is with the Celtics or the Flash. I love his aggressiveness on the court and the fact that he doesn't back down. He seems poised and doesn't get rattled. He knows that defense is the key to playing time and to winning and is willing to put in the hard work on defense to get playing time. I fully believe that if the Celtics keep him with the team and give him the opportunity, he will be the back up 3 that this team is lacking right now. I really hope Danny keeps him and Doc gives him a chance because this kid has what it takes to be a very special player in this league.
Poor Delonte West can't catch a break. I love Delonte and really hated to see him go when Danny traded him. I was hoping that this summer when he was a restricted free agent this summer that maybe the Celtics would bring him back. He has always plays hard and because of it, has been hit with injuries over his career. After battling depression early in the season and finally getting on top of that, he was playing very well and seemed happy in Cleveland where the team was also playing very well. Last night, while trying to block a shot he landed on his wrist and broke it along with getting a couple stitches over his eye. But, he hasn't lost his sense of humor which I have always loved about him:
“I’ve been punched in the face many times before, I shook that off,” West said. “We’re on a roll here, we can’t have no pity party for me. I’m going to try not to feel sorry for myself, it hurts but I can still wear my pinky ring." and "It’s my right wrist; I don’t use that hand anyway.” I had to chuckle about his quote about not using his right hand because I remember all the calls in Boston for him to develop his right hand because he was so predictable in always going left.
Tonight could be a very good night for the Celtics. First, they are off and resting up for tomorrow's game vs the Nets. Second, the Lakers, Magic and Cavs are all playing. The Cavs are facing the Hornets at home. Cleveland is facing a tough team after losing last night in OT to the Bulls. They also lost Delonte and are already without Big Z. 2 of the Celtics other chief rivals are playing each other as the Magic faces the Lakers in LA. Whichever team that loses this game will help the Celtics. A Magic loss may help the Celtics more since they are Eastern Conference rivals, but there is no way, no how that I can cheer for a Lakers victory, ever! My two favorite teams being the Celtics and any team playing the Lakers, for tonight it's "Go Magic."
And tonight will be a good night because it will be Darius Miles' 10th game. If he plays even 1 minute tonight, he goes back on Portland's books for the $18 million still on his contract. The Blazers have been completely classless throughout this whole thing from leaking confidential information to threatening teams who may be interested in signing him. If I were Darius I would be looking out for the Blazers to put a hit out on him, Tanya Harding style to keep him out of the game tonight. They have proved that nothing is beneath them in this matter. I will be cheering for Darius tonight and since there isn't a Celtics game on may even watch as he sticks it to the Blazers.
Scal has been getting a lot of love lately. The jeers and taunting cheers have turned to genuine love for the resident redhead on the team. His team loyalty and the way he plays all out whether he gets 3 minutes or 30 minutes have won Celtics' fans over, just as the same qualities made him a fan favorite in New Jersey. He may never be an all star, but one thing is for sure, he is willing to do whatever is asked of him to help his team win, whether that is sitting on the bench in the playoffs and cheering his team on or starting at center. You have to love that from him. After booing him in his first couple years in Boston, fans are finally realizing what he brings to this team, whether on the court or in the locker room.
There is a good article on Perk in the Providence Journal today. I love Perk. I love his intensity. I love his attitude and work ethic. I love the way he has overcome a lot of adversity and come out on top. The same qualities have made Leon Powe and Bill Walker favorites of mine. You have to pull for kids who face obstacles like all three have faced and come out on the other side all the tougher for it. What they have come through has given all three an incredible work ethic and also has kept them humble. I would really love to see all 3 stay Celtics for life. They are definitely players cut from the old time Celtic cloth.
I am leaning toward the camp that wants Yi to start in the All Star game. KG could really use the rest. I had been voting for all 5 Celtics to start but now I think it would be better that they sit out. It would be great for Perk or Rondo to get their first All Star game in, but Perk definitely needs the break and so does Rondo. I don't see Perk making it anyway and it appears that fans don't see Rondo making it either since he hasn't made it into the top 10 in voting. Speaking of the All Star game, that commercial with the 3 players vying for a spot in the Slam Dunk contest cracks me up. I had to vote for Rudy Fernandez because of the way he sings "Vote Me." Too funny. I can see Bill Walker one day being invited to participate.
Tomorrow is an afternoon game vs the Nets. I imagine they are smarting from their 32 point embarrassment on Wednesday and will come out with a lot more fire this time. They have been a better home team than road team so far this season, but had a 4 game home win streak going before losing to the Blazers on Thursday. The Celtics better not come into this game taking them for granted or the Nets will beat them. This could be a trap game if the Celtics come in expecting it to be an easy one. Then, the Celtics face the Suns on Monday. They were saying last night that on back to back games, Shaq sits out. He sat out the game last night vs Denver and they play tonight at home vs Minnesota. They have one night off and then play Toronto on Sunday and the Celtics on Monday. Maybe he will sit out Monday's game vs the Celtics. We can hope, but he will probably sit out vs Toronto since every team in the NBA has made it their personal mission this year to take down the Celtics.

Comments from the other side - Nets
by FLCeltsFan 8:05 AM
Once again, I was surprised to see how many posts there were trashing the Nets. One thing is clear, Nets fans want a new coach. Most of the posters left by the end of the game to do other things, finding the game too painful to watch, especially since it was the Celtics feed and they had to listen to Tommy.
This should be a good game hopefully we can steal this one in Boston. We lose by 20 Not too excited about the Nets chances in this one. The Celts are in a foul mood after all their recent losses. They probably want to win one for their fans. It seems as though Perkins is out and VEAL will be starting in his place. Hmmm..... Should beat them easily in that case. I hope Najera would punch one of those Celtics' punks tonight I love this team but I have just have a bad feeling about this one. If a fight broke out that would be hilarious. Although, suspensions wouldn't be all that great... I'm mostly interested in seeing how Brook's going to respond to KG's bullying. NOOOOOOO It's the Celtics announcers. Curse me, I think I might listen to these clowns. They said Brian Scalabrine was a pro? I'm dumbfounded to say the least. Oh god no! Veal hurt Vince. Carter injured, that fat ass center landed on his leg. Veal you fat, unconditioned, no talent, goofy, akward, overpaid scrub. People are saying Rondo is better than Harris which I don't believe one second of.
Lopez getting mauled but no calls. He is missing easy baskets, not getting mauled. I hate everyone on that damn Celtics team. Big baby Davis? For 3? You have to be kidding me, if Big Baby hits shots like those. This game is gonna be over... How the hell is baby outplaying Lopez What a flop by Rondo! We could be winning this if we didn't miss so many layups I certainly hope we show no respect for Rondo's jumpshooting in the second half. Our bench is being outscored 14-4. They need to step it up big time. The Nets have done a good job of getting to the line and making the Celtics pick up fouls but once again the refs are protecting the Celtics from true foul trouble. I hate Brian Scalabrine I don't know which is sadder the fact that Big Baby has more points than VC or Scalabrine? The only good thing that could happen at this point is if some Celtic gets hurt real bad. I'm finding it hard to believe that Big Baby is blowing past Brook. Get to see Bill Walker log some minutes now. I wanted him originally over CDR when they both slipped in the 2nd round. Am I the only one still watching this??????? Yes

Nets at Celtics in Pictures 1/14

Congratulations to Doc on his 200th win! Nice to have Gino come out to celebrate with him as the Celtics won it going away 118-86.
The Bench came up big for the Celtics as the starters got a rest. Leon finished with 5 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in 23 minutes. Big Baby finished with 12 points, including his first career 3 pointer, to go with 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block in 21 minutes.
As proof that white men can jump, Scal throws one down. The funniest thing about this was Tommy yelling about Scal elevating! Scal got the start in place of Perk and did very well against New Jersey's big man Brook Lopez. He finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block in 27 minutes.
Paul Pierce had another good game with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block in 32 minutes.
Rondo was back to his old aggressive self and out played Devin Harris in the key matchup of the game. He finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 12 assists and 3 steals in 30 minutes.
Kevin Garnett continued his aggressive play of late with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block in just 24 minutes of play.
Ray Allen had a quiet game, taking just 8 shots and making 5 of them for 12 points, along with 1 steal in 28 minutes. Gabe Pruitt got some quality playing time and continues to look good, especially on the defensive end and finished with 9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal in 19 minutes. .
We got our first Bill Walker sighting as he logged 12 minutes and finished with 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. His 3 baskets were all pretty impressive, especially one pass that he had to jump to catch and while in the air, he twisted around and put it in off the glass. He also played good defense in his time on the court
I really like the energy that Walker brings to the team. I think he can help the team this season if they give him a chance.
Eddie House finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal but limped to the locker room with the diagnosis of an ankle sprain.
The Celtics out-rebounded the Nets 45-32, which was pretty amazing with their height advantage. It just goes to prove that the majority of rebounding is effort and desire. Here Leon and Baby battle each other for a rebound. Someone ought to remind them that when one of the guys in white gets the ball, it's ok.
Patrick O'Bryant finished with 2 points, and 2 rebounds in 5 minutes. I don't think he has looked all that bad when he is in the game. He hustles and seems to play well. I am not sure why he doesn't get more minutes when we very much need height, especially with Perk out.
It was fun and games for the starters as the reserves finished the game out in style

Comments from the Other Side - Raptors 1/12
by FLCeltsFan 8:12 AM
Raptors fans definitely have a lot to say. This time, one of their game threads went over 120 pages. Again, I was surprised at how much of the threads on all the boards were bashing their own team. Bosh, Moon, Kapono and even Calderon got the majority of the fans' venom, but no one was immune. And as always, Tommy and the refs came in for a lot of criticism as well. They are still irritated by Green's dunks on them two seasons ago as they brought those up at the end of the game when Powe finished the scoring with a dunk. In all fairness, this wasn't a blowout and the Celtics needed that score to cement the win.
A Definite Loss. I say its a raps win...I didn't think we were gonna win today anyways and we always play better at the td garden... There is simply no excuse to losing to Boston tomorrow, the knock on them is that their depth is weak and rely way too much on their Big 3, we should be able to win this one. If we win I will be very surprised. I predict a blowout by Boston I really hope they decide to do what others teams have been doing to Boston and put a bigger player on Rondo, and play off him. Maybe put Parker on him, and have him stay back and play him for the dribble. Will Solomon will have to play Ray Allen, and maybe his quicks can keep up with him through all the screens. If Raptors couldn't win at home, there is nothing that indicates they can win in Boston. The 4th quarter will not carry over just for the simple fact that it's on the road and not at home like it was today.
I got a feeling we're gonna win Raps win by 10 Joey kicks scalabrine's ass Well the second of back to back for the Celts maybe they will be tired. If calderon is playing we'll loose. If he isn't I'm smelling a victory. My gosh - again, the opposite of win is spelled L-O-S-E.
If they can't come up with a better effort then that at home they're toast on the road. The Celtics intimidate the hell out of the Raps. Our guys more than just lost today, they are demoralized I think the Raps lose so bad the statisticians count it as 2 loses No Perk tonight for the Celtics again. KG out in the 2nd quarter because the Cs are down by 15 and he has an aneurysm. EDIT: This will come after making Big Baby cry again, of course. Lol....I think PP's gonna go off tonight instead of Ray. All Star Scalibrine Boston announcers are notorious for being awful. Celtics are killing the Raps with the dribble. Glad to see Bosh driving. Good. Get these old farts to foul. As long as that biatch Rondo gets tossed around like a doll, I'm happy. Did Pierce just get an OFFENSIVE?! First Lebron gets called for the crab, now this... It's BIZARRO WORLD I TELL YOU! See what happens when u keep ray Allen in check it's easy to keep someone in check if they haven't attempted a shot. Lol. I HATE Tommy, over exaggerates everything the Celtics do. Bargs misses an open shot. "You see Scal there? He absolutely DESTROYED his rhythm" Did you guys hear that heckler when big baby was at the line? "Don't start crying if you miss!!" It was so loud They were doing it in Toronto too! I heard a couple people scream CRY BABY! Poor guy he actually seems like a good guy! Is it just me, or does Rajon Rondo actually flop just as much as Vlade Divac, if not more? When Kapono isn't scoring....he is absolutely a waste of a uniform. He should just play naked. I don't mind being beat by Pierce or Garnett... But getting posted up by a guy named "big baby" is a little annoying. For a scrub Powe gets a lot of calls. You know your career didn't go so well when the highlights they mention about you include your shoe size This crowd is loud I don't get why we don't exploit Joey against Scalabrine. This is a joke matchup. Roko's making the Celtics look like high school players. Boston is overrated, I can't believe we lost to this team 3 times already. KG was going to start a fight with Hump but realized he was half black and stepped back. The Celts set illegal pics. Then our guys get called if they as much as breath How does Leon friggin Powe create big fouls on both CB and AB? Fouls are about even Time is running out. The refs need to get to work and make sure the Celts win. Refs getting Boston back in the game. They can't do it themselves. Scalabrinie embarrassing Bosh on defense, comes up and plays up on him challenging him to take it off the dribble and makes Bosh settle for a jumper LOL This is the worse reffing I have ever seen disgrace They have better fans than us. Why, why, WHY, is Brian Scalabrine roasting us. Scal walked. Heavily. Man Big Baby doesn't even set screens. He Just pushes people Someone stab Bosh, quick, so he'll be as clutch as PP A call on KG? Those Refs will be getting a memo from the NBA for sure... Must be nice to have a player that you can go to in the clutch like that. Wish we had one. Pierce is not clutch, anybody can make a freethrow line jumper not contested..blame our D Boston isnt a good team as people play out to be there struggling to win against a team without two of there starters They lost to the knicks,Bobcats and are barely beating a team like us on there homecourt there bench sucks and it will eventually come out Pierce bleeds clutch If I saw KG on street I would throw eggs at him...I hate this guy like no other. Kg gets too much respect from the refs he threw bargs when getting that rebound That would of been clutch if Kapono made it Very classy thing to make the basket on the fastbreak with just a second left in the game. This is why I hate the Celtics. Didn't this happen before in Boston? Gerald Green off the backboard? Does this mean we are now legit? Or does Boston suck now? Their bench lacks...bad. Trust me, with the way they're playing, they're headed for an early playoff exit. I'll bet money that next year, they won't be nearly the same team they are now, ESPECIALLY if they lose in the playoffs. Boston as a team has no class. The Celtics are a classless team. Damn ****. This is a replay of Gerald Green's dunk on us at the lasts econd of the game in 2006 .I doubt Boston will repeat this year, their team ain't that good KG is a caricature at this point, he is mentally deranged. People complain about Jose's D? Kapono is just terrible. I heard that Celtics are interested in him. I hope so. He'd beat them from within

Comments from the Other Side - Raptors 1/11
by FLCeltsFan 7:52 AM
The above picture was on one of the game threads and I really liked it and so decided to use it as a header for this post instead of the normal header. I have to say, the Raptors fans are the most prolific posters in game threads. There were between 50 and 80 pages in the game threads on 3 different boards. Whew! I don't know if they always post that way, or if it just that the Celtics bring that out of them. However, most of their comments were about how bad their own team was. They were brutal. I don't know if I have seen fans rip their own team that much in a game thread. They were especially down on Bosh who seemed to be playing timidly against KG. Enjoy today's issue of Comments from the Other Side. These are definitely more fun when we win!
Who's going to guard Rondo? I just read that teams have been putting bigger players on him and its the reason for his struggles of late. Jake voskhul for first 2 minutes. Rondo will never attack again. Then Jake can cover KG Don't really care about rondo, he's a scrub. KG and Pierce (and Allen) are the real issues. Celtics have sucked lately. But I have a feeling they'll want a win, and beat the Raps, which will get them rolling again. All I can say is beat them while they're on the ground... We can do this! Boston been losing virtually every game as of late. Voskuhl murders KG! Let's do this! I know the Celtics have been losing a lot lately but I'd rather have faced them when they lost 4 of 6 instead of now - because they've lost for for too long. They're probably going to come out and dominate. Then we'll lose a closer game on Monday This may be a statement game by Boston to show that they are still the team to beat. That ship has sailed. Cleveland and LA are now the teams to beat. Will the real CB please show up for this game. If KG pushes, please push back. I wanna see CB4 get in a fight with his idol Kevin Garnett. Will be a great accomplishment if we can win one of two. I'm very worried. Boston are slumping and are going to take out all their anger on us. Please Jay, no Kapono in these two games. I hope the raps win at least 1 of the next 2 against Boston, otherwise we will be the team that got the C's out of their slump,... Ugh... Jake will maul KG in the first quarter no doubt... Bargs will decapitate KG on a dunk. Joey will bulldoze into KG and make him his own personal biatch. COME ON RAPTORS!!!! Dirty Garnot,Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are no John Havlicek It was one week ago that we were staring down the magic, who are arguably playing better ball than the Celts right now and took it to them. Redemption...Celtics have no pride ATM and the raps r playing respectable ball so I predict a win... I think Voskuhl "The Hitman" should injure Garnett Please put Jake The Snake on KG, Jake is going to punk KG so bad. And you know KG isn't going to do anything even if Jake is white. Giving the Celtics another loss would be sweet. This game is really important. A win will further add to the demise of the lowly Celtics while adding to this surge of confidence the Raptors and probably result in another win on Monday. A loss on the other hand would probably spark this Celtics team and set them off onto a 20 game win steak while destroying any confidence we've built up over this past week. So whos ready to march down to the ACC and instigate a fight that will suspend KG for another 10 games? And of course the fight should be between Jake the Snake and KG. That way we only lose our scrub player for several games while they get their key player suspended. Raptors win by 15..I'm also predicting a fight between Will Solomon and Rajon Rondo. I just hope we give Rondo all the space in the world for him to shot. Last game I became very angry that Calderon was pushing up on him two feet past the three point line and getting blown past everytime. We need to make Rondo a jump shooter to win this game. No Perkins, good for us Wow Scalabrani is starting, he better be abused by someone. Scalabrine's startin!! Really should help us. Scalabrine vs. Bargs: A battle of EPIC whiteness. If there is any team in this league that can start Boston on another winning streak, it's us.
Paul Pierce is injured! Watch out, he's gonna drop 60! I HATE Pierce with the passion of a thousand burning suns! Is PP hurt? Can we hurt him some more? Someone going to guard ray at some point today? Ray Allen is gonna burn us now but Pierce will be the one making contested fadeaways in the 4th Soooooo yeah they might want to put somebody on Allen. Like, they should staple somebody to him. Ray Allen is a raptor killer. KG said the F word Bosh is scared of KG Boston's gonna win and use this game to beat us again Tomorrow and then go on a 22 game win streak. The one person you don't want to leave open they manage to consistently leave WIDE open.. You know how Boston thrives on being "INTENSE" & "TOUGH". The Raptors players should all run over & help their players get up every time the fall on their asses. It's kind of hard to get worked up & be INTENSE when the other team is being nice to you......lol Ray Allen is such a washed up piece of garbage, but stop giving him wide open looks Toronto Look at Rondo push the ball and get KG an easy opportunity...why don't our guys ever do that?? Triano needs to tell Jake to just choke slam KG, then maybe we'll have a chance. Bargnani can't handle Veal Scalabrine. Calderon looks like a pylon Rondo is just running circles around him. Sad let's trade for rondo, he drives New drinking game: every time Rondo blows by Hose, you drink up.. Guaranteed you'll be wasted by the second half Boston looks beatable, too bad we don't have any D type player that can look after Ray-Gun Have you seen Rondo play this season? The Raps are making him look like Magic Johnson. The teams that know how to play him, he has been horrible. He can't shoot and is usually a liability on offence for the Celtics. Can't believe we gonna lose to a very beatable Celtics team You might as well play Bosh against Boston's bench. He can't do **** against KG. Big Baby is outhustling the entire raps team. How do you not see the giant shot clock above the basket? Send whole raptors team to d-league. Celtics is probably playing at their worst basketball level as of right now, and we can't beat them? D-League. Bosh is completely useless with KG on the floor. Bird was not even close to lebron, come on NOW... How about looking at Bird supporting cast... Garnett is somehow tired and disinterested in this game, his jumper is off and heès late on rotations, but Bosh for some reason is reverting to passiveness, sorry but hès too scared of Garnett, like he doesnèt know what to do with a wounded animal Kapono showing off for his future team-mates We can only hope the Celtics trade for him. The sooner the better Man Celtics get a lot of respect from refs on inside play. There is atleast 10 close calls in which it could've being shooting fouls. They are allowed to challenge shots other players would get called on I'm watching the American feed the Celtics announcer said that Joey gives up a little bit of athleticism to scal :| Ray Allen is unconscious today. We let him get in rhythm and now he will not miss. I say we lost atleast 1 minute because they are not stopping the clock on our scores. Celtics taking FOREVER to inbound and clock is not being stopped WOW KG NICE SCREEN Moving screen. Never gets called Yup. It was covered on a memo from Stern to refs. We had our chance to get right back in this but Moon thought he was Ray Ray for a sec It's too bad we couldn't foul out RayRay cus now he's gonna ice the game at the ft line. Ray Allen is cold blooded Looking on the bright side, hopefully they learned something from this game & bring it tomorrow night. At least we killed a lot of Bostons confidence/ momentum late in the game.... The Raps have an IQ of 2.3 . Sigh, the whole league knows what to do against Rondo yet we don't do it from the very beginning. Nobody brought up doc's decision to start scalaweenie at the center spot. By putting scalaweenie out there, either bargs or bosh (whoever was gaurding him) would be positioned out on the perimeter leaving the paint open for rondo to attack. With Perkins in the lineup, rondo has less space to attack. Doc chose scalaweenie as a brilliant strategic move instead of going with powe or big baby.

Perk Out vs Raptors Today
Sunday, January 11, 2009
by FLCeltsFan 12:19 PM
Perk will sit out today's game at Toronto with a left shoulder strain. He re-aggravated it when fouled by Ben Wallace in Friday's loss to Cleveland. Perk is hoping to be cleared to play tomorrow night against Toronto in Boston. This is the second game that Perk will miss with shoulder problems this season. He had surgery in the summer that they hoped would prevent further problems and he has been working on strengthening the shoulder, but for the second time this season already, the shoulder has been strained. Personally, I think teams target the shoulder and try to hack him there to get him out of the game.
Tony Allen will also be out and will miss his fourth straight game will an ankle strain. It is still uncertain whether Tony will play tomorrow in Boston.

Random Thoughts on an Early Game Day
by FLCeltsFan 10:22 AM
The Celtics play the Raptors today in an sfternoon game. Typically they haven't liked afternoon games, but today is as good as any for the Celtics to break out of their slump. The Celtics should beat the Raptors, but then again, the Celtics should have beaten the Warriors, Blazers, Knicks, Wizards, and Rockets, so nothing is certain any more. The Raptors can kill a team from beyond the arc, so let's hope the Celtics have located the defense that has been missing these past 9 games.
It is amazing how the Celtics have gone from talk of the best team ever to being past their window. And now all the media "experts" are counting them out and we haven't even hit the All Star break yet. But, the koolaid drinker in me just won't listen to all that doom and gloom. Here are a few facts that may take Celtics fans off suicide watch.
Even after the Celtics have lost 7 of their last 9 games, the Cavs, Lakers, Magic and Celtics all have the same number of wins. The Celtics may be a game and a half back in the East, but they have played 3 more games than the Cavs or the Lakers. Yes, they have been in a slump, but they are still right up there at the top in spite of it.
Also, history has shown that champions do go through slumps. The 85-86 Celtics team that is still in conversations about the best team ever went through a slump in December that culminated in the Christmas Day debacle where they blew a 25 point lead and lost on national TV. But, they were a good team and were able to right the ship after their slump and go back to dominating.
Another example that should give Celtics fans some hope is the 2003-04 Pistons that finished the regular season 59-23 and went on to beat the hated Lakers in the Finals. That team had a 3 game losing streak in November. In December, they lost 4 in a row and 7 of 9 in one stretch of games. They then won 13 in a row before going on a 3 game losing streak again. Then, in February, they lost 6 games in a row, and of 9 games. I am sure Piston fans were in deep despair during that 6 game losing streak. Celtics fans would be jumping off bridges. But, my point is, even championship teams go through slumps in the regular season. Home court is important and it sure would be nice to have it, but we don't need it to win a championship. This team can win on the road when they have to. I refuse to get down on this team after one rough stretch.
All that being said, the Celtics do have some holes that need to be filled. We could use a back up 3 with size who can play defense. Truthfully, I think Bill Walker may be able to fill that role by the end of the season, even if he isn't ready now. We also need a back up center with size. We may already have that in Patrick O'Bryant. Doc says he is getting close to being able to contribute. And we need a point guard to back up Rondo. I really believe we already have that in Gabe Pruitt. The kid plays great defense, has a smooth jumper, and doesn't get rattled. If Gabe plays the point, I think Eddie will go back to being the shooter we need on the second unit. He isn't as effective as a scorer when he has to bring the ball up and set up the offense. I think this team can improve from within. Of course, if there is a player out there like PJ Brown who could help the team without destroying the chemistry (see Marbury, Stephon, chemistry killer), then by all means, Danny should go for it. But, I don't think we need to make wholesale changes for this team to repeat.
From the absolute irony department: The Celtics have lost 4 in a row while the Timberwolves have won 5 in a row. Wow!
Kudos to Chris Wallace for staring down the Blazers and re-signing Darius Miles. I don't think the Blazers have any shot at a lawsuit against them since they obviously need help and signed him before and let him sit out his 10 game suspension and just didn't want to guarantee his original contract. I really hope he does well. Any kid who works that hard to come back from an injury deserves a chance. Besides, the Blazers have been very classless in this whole thing and deserve to have to eat his contract.
