Random Thoughts on Media Day Reports

We are finally getting some clarification on KG's situation and even though we heard it from the horse's mouth, there are still conflicting reports. First we get the news from Doc that there are no restrictions on KG and that he has been playing 5 on 5 for a few days. The Globe has this from KG:
"No surprises, other than the severity of the injury," said Garnett. "I didn't know it was that bad."
Garnett was asked to clarify.
"It was just what we thought it was, but it was more than that," said Garnett. "Put it like this: a bone spur the size of this tape recorder ended up being the size of this microphone...It's pretty severe, but the best thing about it is I got it out of the way. I'm almost 100 percent going forward. The best thing about it is I'm playing without any pain, which is something I haven't had in quite some time. Please note that KG said that he is playing without pain. That sounds great, right? It did to me, until I read this from Gary Tanguay on the CSNE website:
At Celtics Media Day today in Waltham, I got a chance to talk exclusively with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett. KG told me that "the knee still gets sore" and that he is "working his way back into it". He has been playing 5 on 5 with guys the last week or so. So, KG says he is playing without pain but Tanguay quotes him saying that his knee still gets sore. So, I guess maybe he doesn't have any shooting pain but it is still sore. Whatever it is, it is more than we knew a week ago. KG also reports that the severity of the injury was worse than expected and mentions that the bone spur was much bigger than originally thought. Note, he didn't mention tendon damage or any staples. But then again he didn't mention any pain in the first interview but mentioned soreness in the second. Is there more to come?
Perk was his usual earnest and honest self at media day in talking about Sheed and he sounds really, really happy to have KG back on the court with him.
"It felt good [to scrimmage with Garnett last week]," said Perkins. "We were on the same team. Just us hitting each other with passes for dunks and stuff like that felt good. Me and Kevin have a great relationship."
On Wallace, Perkins said, "It was cool. I like playing with Rasheed. Obviously he's a great passer. We all know he can shoot. He's got great post moves. He's a great defender. But really I just wanted to see how he was outside of basketball, and he's a great guy in the locker room. Personality is great and everything."
Perkins said Wallace's personality was different than he expected.
"I don't know," said Perkins. "I was waiting to see. He's kind of scary. That totally cracked me up! Perk talking about Sheed being scary???? You have to be kidding me. Sheed smiles more in one game than Perk has smiled in his whole career. If I had my choice of having to face either one, Perk is definitely the most scary. However, the Herald is reporting that there is less of Perk to be scary this season (and Big Baby is a little less big as well)
Perkins said he lost 15 pounds to get to 270 pounds. It showed, as Perkins looked solid. He could have had a biggest loser competition with fellow big man Glen Davis who embarked on a mixed martial arts training program this summer to get in better shape. Davis said he dropped 25-30 pounds, but more importantly said he added muscle in the process.
We know that Daniels could have signed for more elsewhere and chose to come to the Celtics for the LLE because he wants to win. Sounds like he has ubuntu down already. He is willing to do whatever his team needs and that is a good thing. His versatility is going to be a huge factor for the Celtics bench. at 6'6" He can play the 3 effectively and with his athleticism he can play the 2 or the one and will give us size at either position. I didn't see much from him since everyone wanted to hear from KG and Sheed especially, but this quote bodes well for his attitude about playing:
"It was kind of a no-brainer, once I found out this was an option," said Daniels. "I wanted to come here and just be a part of it." "I'm just whatever for whenever my number's called, whether that's at the point guard, the two, or the three," said Daniels, who didn't say whether or not he was promised a certain amount of minutes. "I just like being on the floor."
Danny said that he will be talking with Rondo about a contract but is unsure whether they can get it done now or will wait until next offseason when they can match. But he stated that he wants Rondo to be the Celtics' franchise PG for years to come. Rondo had this to say about his contract situation: "I don't really think about that (contract), I just try to focus on camp. If it's going to happen it's going to happen. If not, I'll play it out. I want to be wherever I'm wanted the next 10 years; if Danny wants me, I'll be here the next 10 years. I have sat down with Danny, but we didn't speak about contract, we talked about expectations for the season. I try to focus on -- trying to get a ring, got to get one this year. I don't think it will be on my mind, I won't alow it to affect me when I play. But, of course, everyone wants security and it would be great if I could sign now. He also stated that he is about 11 lbs heavier than last season and that he expects the team to win the championship this season. In my opinion, Danny needs to sign Rondo now because after this season, he is going to be a whole lot more expensive.
Going into the 2007-08 season, the Celtics had a spotlight on the bare wall next to the 1986 banner to remind the team what they were playing for. This season they have gone a step further and next to the 2008 banner is a blank banner.
In spite of all the so called experts bowing and scraping before the Fakers, I fully expect that banner to be filled in with the Celtics 18th championship this coming June.
Scott Souza reports on Lester Hudson and Michael Sweetney.
Power forward Michael Sweetney has been invited to camp, but is not on the preseason roster. Lester Hudson is after Danny Ainge said he has been officially signed. It was also reported that Danny said that he saw no need to bring another PG into camp to compete with Hudson for the back up PG spot. At least, that is what he said today. What he says tomorrow may be something completely different.
And here is a news flash I bet you never expected. Tony Allen is doubtful for the preseason due to problems with his ankle. Allen, entering his 6th season with Boston, had arthroscopic surgery on June 3rd with a torn tendon in his ankle. His status for the preseason is questionable. Allen only appeared in 42 games for the Celtics in the 2008/09 season. And finally, NBA.com and NBA TV will be covering training camps again this season. The Celtics' segment will be on Oct. 3. It will air on NBA.com at 6 p.m ET and at midnight (Oct. 4)on NBA-TV. Andre Aldridge & Cedric Maxwell will be the two announcers. Could they have picked more inconvenient times? One is dinner time and the other is bedtime. Contrast this with the fact that the Fakers will be on at 1 and 6 pm.
