I refuse to do a congratulations to the Fakers post like most Celtics blogs have done today. It pains me to even link to those posts. In my opinion, they won by default. If the Celtics had been healthy, I honestly don't believe that the Lakers would have won it. Theirs is a hollow victory because they know the best team wasn't in the finals and they didn't beat the Celtics. I watched the end of the game, but then turned it off immediately. I couldn't stand to watch the Lakers celebrate. I really, really don't like the Lakers.
I also don't go with all the Phil Jackson is the greatest posts. Yes he has 10 championships. But, he got those by player shopping. He takes teams with superstars like Michael Jordan and Kobe in place and runs with them. Red Auerbach is the greatest, period. Red built his teams from the ground up and he stuck with those teams, continuing to build as players came and went. He won 8 championships in a row with a team he built from rookies and free agents. He won 9 titles in 10 years. And, he wasn't just the coach, he was the GM and the coach. Phil isn't worthy to bow down to Red's feet.
All that being said, now we can get on with the offseason because the sooner the offseason is over, the sooner the Celtics can win banner 18 next season. The Lakers will have everyone gunning for them next year. Teams will be playing their best game (and sometimes only great game) of the season when they play the Lakers so they can boast that they beat the champs. Rarely do teams stay healthy 2 years in a row. It will be the Lakers turn for injuries next season. They are the team with the short off season to heal and refresh. Also, will the Lakers be able to sign both Ariza and Odom who are free agents? Chances are they will lose one of their key pieces, just as the Celtics did with Posey. They are the team with the target on their backs.
Yesterday we went out and got a 40" HD TV because I want to watch the Celtics win banner 18 in style next season. Garnett will heal. Danny won't make the same mistake 2 seasons in a row, going into the season with a weak bench. He will sign a couple of free agents that will give us a strong bench. Now it's on to the draft, free agents, trades, and Summer League.
So, LA, enjoy your championship this season because it will be back in Boston next year. (That's as close to a congratulations as you will get from me.)
