Well, I said nothing would happen on draft day, and...nothing happened.
Now on to my fearless free agent predictions. We won't sign anybody big, but we will have big expectations for whomever we sign. Those expectations will not be fulfilled.
Then we'll also keep a couple of our own free agents. This will be spun as being signings of players better than those available. Won't be true. But that's what will be said.
This means we'll be back to wait and see, meaning the season starts, and Danny will work the phones from now until the trrade deadline to make us better. Not much will be cooking here either.
Now before everyone turns to the razor blades, my two notes of optimism are as follows: the expiring contracts of scal and TA have some value. I would think we have a better than 50% chance of converting them into something productive.
Finally, we have ray-ray's enormous contract. That could net us something decent. But unless that something was a 25 year oldish, very talented big, Im not sure its worth it.
So, all in all, 2009 is looking a lot like 1988. Just like danny said the other day. One potential big difference, I think the current starters are younger overall than in 1988, and the older players today have more gas left in the tank than in 1988.
Now if KG's knee is still bad, then the season is already kaput and we'll actually be worse than in 1988.
Now if things do get desperate, I suppose there's always dumping ray and rondo in combination. I really don't see perk getting dealt. He's the johnny bench of our defense. Rondo and Ray could net us something. But at that point it would be like starting over.
Hey Lex! Good to hear from you even if you are spouting doom and gloom.
I think Danny does sign someone who can help. I think he will get a back up big and a back up 3. Maybe along the lines of Oberto, McDyess, or Barnes. McDyess would be great.
I don't know if House and Baby will be back. With House it's up to him. I don't see Danny upping his contract so if he opts out of the 2+ mil on his present contract, he will probably be playing elsewhere next season. But personally I don't think it is a good idea for him since there are so many free agents and not a lot of teams with money. Big Baby may be another story. I have a feeling someone is going to overpay him and he may end up starting on a bad team. Danny can't afford to pay him big bucks to back up KG. I really hope they sign Leon who will be a big boost going into the playoffs.
I don't like trading Ray if their main goal is to win this season. It breaks up the chemistry of the starters who I think are among the best in the league. But, if Danny is willing to sacrifice some this season for the sake of the future, then trading Ray makes more sense.
The key, no matter who they sign will be staying healthy.
But you do see why it was so hard to trade the original big three. What exactly are you going to get in return? I remember the deal for bird was chuck person and three first rounders. Who hoo! That really would have won us some championships. I'd rather have bird retire a celtic.
