Random Thoughts 5/4

I have been so depressed since game 6. How can the team that was the best defensive team in the league through 82 regular season games completely forget how to play defense on the road in the playoffs? If the Celtics had played their regular game in Atlanta, this game would have been over in 5. But they somehow become a timid team on offense and a terrible team on defense on the road now.
I have given Doc his due this season but also said that the playoffs would prove a lot about his coaching. He has never won a playoff series in his 9 year playoff career. Once teams get to the playoffs, coaching becomes much more important as coaches have to to make adjustments throughout. Mike Woodson has out coached Doc in this series and has made the adjustments but Doc has not. Some of Docs substitutions and rotations are questionable as well. I really hope he can pull it out and take this team to the title, but so far, he hasn't given me much confidence that he can.
I have no idea why the officiating in this series has been so one sided. The Hawks have taken 71 more free throws than the Celtics in the 6 games so far. Are they trying to even the playing field since the Celtics came in so highly touted? Do they all hate the Celtics? Seems like all the other teams' fans do, so why not the refs? Hopefully the refs will call this one even.
The Hawks are having people sign up for Round 2 tickets already. That is a bit premature unless the refs have told them something the Celtics don't know yet. This reminds me of 1969 when the Celtics were an aging team that struggled somewhat during the regular season. They made it to the finals against the Lakers who were overwhelmingly favored to win the title. The Lakers figured that it was a done deal with game seven in their building. Bill Russell found a program detailing the Lakers planned celebration, including lots of balloons suspended by nets from the ceiling to be released after the certain victory. The champaign was opened and ready. Russell passed this information on to his teammates, who were all offended by the Lakers presuming that they would win the game without question. The Celtics proceeded to win the game and the championship. Someone moved the champaign to the visitors locker room and at least it didn't go to waste. So, the Hawks are taking reservations for Round 2 tickets. Let's hope this version of the Celtics react in the same way.
I have to say that my confidence in this team has been somewhat shaken. They are the only top seed to have to go to 7 games and the only top seed who hasn't won on the road. And, they have looked absolutely lost in the games in Atlanta. But, I believe they will prevail in this series and come back strong against the other teams they face. There have been series in history where teams have struggled in the first round with a team and then went on to the finals. They have to get past this Hawks team first, though. They are a very confident group now and the Celtics will need to come out tomorrow and just squash them from the start and not let them see any light at all. If the Celtics give them any hope at all, they will take it and run.
One thing I hate is the 1:00 start time. The Celtics have never played well in early afternoon games. I hope they can forget it is an afternoon game and play like they did in the evening games in the Garden. I am pretty nervous about this game. I was certain the Celtics would win game 4 and then certain they would win game 6. I never expected them to play so poorly in those games. They looked nothing like the Celtics who won 66 games. Hopefully the good Celtics show up tomorrow. My anniversary is on Monday and I want a Celtics victory on Monday for my anniversary present. Git-er-done, Celtics!!

Hawks Force Game 7

Fiddlin' and Diddlin' - Daily Links 5/2

Random Thoughts 5/2
by FLCeltsFan 8:10 AM
Just a few thoughts on this Friday before a very big game 6. The Celtics need to win this one. Yes, they lost two games in Atlanta where they in no way resembled the Celtics team we saw all season. They played no defense in those two games and looked old and slow. Then, they came back to Boston for game 5 and all was right again. They found their defense and once again looked like the Celtics we all know and love. Hopefully the good Celtics will show up and they will get the win tonight. The Pistons righted themselves and got a blowout in game 6 and the Celtics should do no less.
The Herald has the possible scenarios as to how this weekend will play out as far as the schedule for the games. It is a bit confusing because of all of the possible outcomes of games tonight.
If Game 7 is necessary in this series and in the Cleveland-Washington and Utah-Houston sets, the Celts will play the Hawks at 3:30.
If the Cavaliers and Wizards go to Game 7 and Utah closes out Houston, the Celtics would host the Hawks at 1 p.m.
If Cleveland and the Celtics both win tonight, they will meet at the Garden at 1.
And, of course, if the Celts close out the Hawks and the Wizards force the Cavs to a seventh game, the C’s will be off Sunday. So, if the Celtics win and Cavs lose, Celtics have Sunday off. That is the best case scenario so that the Celtics can get a bit of rest and practice in. But, if the Celtics and Cavs both win, Round 2 starts Sunday at 1. I won't consider any scenario that has the Celtics losing tonight. Bad mojo...
Doc Rivers called for Pierce to be more aggressive in game 5 and it certainly worked out well for the Celtics. Hopefully, Pierce will once again be aggressive in game 6. We are a better team when he drives to the hoop because he will either draw a double team and find the open man, or he will score, or he will draw the foul and we certainly need more of those. Hopefully the refs will call this one even or it could be another 5 on 8 game which are never fun.
The key to this game and winning the championship is going to be defense. In the playoffs, defense becomes much more important than in the regular season. If you look at the past several championships, they were all won by a team that played exceptional defense. This year's Celtics were the best defensive team all season and if they continue to play defense like that, they have a shot at beating any team they face.
Rip Hamilton has worn that face mask faithfully for years and years. Last night Antonio McDyess was wearing one also after having his nose broken earlier in the series but he finally ditched it after taking it off a few times. Perk came out in the last game with a face mask on after taking a hard hit to the nose in game 3. I think his lasted all of a minute or two before he ditched it. I can see why it would be uncomfortable to wear. But, it did make Perk look even fiercer. Maybe he should wear a hockey mask in game 6 just for effect.
Gilbert Arenas is out for the rest of the series. I honestly think this makes the Wizards a better team. I still have mixed emotions over whether we want the Cavs or the Wizards. The Cavs have LeBron but the Wizards have beaten us 3 out of 4 times this season and just seem to have our number. They are another one of those athletic teams that just seem to give us fits. I think I would rather face the Cavs if I could choose. Either way, I hope this series goes to game 7 so the Celtics can get some rest and they will be tired.
Early on, Rajon Rondo said that the playoffs don't really start until a team wins on the road. Well, let's hope the playoffs begin tonight. Go Celtics!!!
On a side note, one of my favorite bloggers has disappeared. All season, Lex Nihil Novi has been one of my favorite blogs but Lex has not posted for awhile. Hope all is ok. Lex, if you are out there, give me a holler.

Did We Watch the Same Game?
Thursday, May 1, 2008
by FLCeltsFan 10:09 PM
After reading comments from both Celtics fans and Hawks fans after game 5, I started wondering if we were watching the same game. It seems that fans of both teams thought that the refs were helping the other team.
First, here are some thoughts from Hawks fans: We got fouled SO many times and didn't have it called...They have to foul us because we are so much more athletic than them.
Yeah. I remember a few BS charges as well as the laughable lane violation and moving screen.
That 2nd foul call on JJ was horrible. It was a 100% flop by Poe.
i think that 90% of the fouls called could have been called better by a mentally retarded beaver thats been on too much pcp
That was a horrible call indeed. Ill rarely say this but the calls have decidedly gone bostons way tonight
Yeah, as soon as it was announced that Joe Forte, and Dick Bavetta were two of the officials; I knew the calls were going to totally favor the Celtics. It's like David Stern specifically called the officials he could count on to officiate the game more one sided.
Honestly i think someone should investigate the shady refs and stern for that matter. i think its all apart of his diabolical plan to "Give" Boston the championship.
They definitely got all the calls from the refs tonight.
It definitely seems as though the game was called one way in favor of the Celtics. From reading these comments, it doesn't seem like the Celtics even got one foul called against them.
But then, here are some comments from Celtics fans:
The Celtics are capable of such a high level of basketball, that despite the best effort of the officials to give lowly Atlanta a boost, the Celtics still rolled over them.
The refs called a very tight game when the C's were on defense, and a very loose one when the Hawks were defending. Free throws accounted for 29.4% of Atlanta's point production.
I've come to the conclusion that NBA officials must have put a significant amount of money on the Atlanta Hawks.
Even in a Celtics’ victory, the officiating was so excruciatingly bad that the game was hard to watch.
I’m tired of watching Rondo get knocked to the floor and Pierce get elbowed out of bounds on one side of the floor with no call, then seeing the Celtics get called for minimal contact on the other side of the floor.
I hate to keep picking on the Refs, but it has seemed that in these last 3 games they have been trying to get Boston to not be so intense and they feel the Hawks should get the benefit of the doubt.
That Phantom call on Pierce was nothing more than "I will show you who is in control" by the Refs. Also the Refs botched at least two Offensive calls and instead gave PP the Defensive fouls. I am really in favor of a fine for Refs who blow calls like those.
The refs seemed to call every touch foul on the Celtics while letting the Hawks hack, grab and shove with nothing callled. those two blocking fouls on pierce were horrible. He was clearly set and out of the circle. terrible job by the refs.
The refs did everything they could to help the Hawks win and the Celtics still blew them out. Just think if the refs had been fair. We woulda beat them by 40. After reading these comments you would think that the refs didn't call a single foul on the Hawks while fouling out every Celtic.
I think the truth lies somewhere between these two views. Celtics fans watch the game through green colored glasses and the Hawks fans watch through red colored glasses. In truth, the refs are just bad. They make terrible calls and non calls on both teams. Celtics fans just seen the ones on the Celtics and Hawks fans just see the ones on the Hawks. But, in reality, they are blowing calls on both teams. There is one thing that can't be refuted, though, and that is the fact that in this series so far, the Hawks have taken 45 more free throws than the Celtics (155 to 110). The Celtics have also been called for 21 more personal fouls than the Hawks. While both sides saw the game called against them, and the refs are blowing calls on both sides, the numbers seem to back up the Celtics fans point of view.

Herald Garden party for Celtics Sam Cassell’s time to shine Paul Pierce’s big night speaks volumes FL's Take: Pierce is going to have to keep this same aggressive mindset for the Celtics to win game 6 in Atlanta. He can't play timidly and will have to be aggressive just as he was in game 5. Big Papi’s a big fan of Hawks’ Horford Celtics make it look simple Joe Johnson: ‘It ain’t over yet' FL's Take: The Celtics have given the Hawks confidence by playing so poorly in games 3 and 4 and letting them back in the series. They will need to play very well to take game 6 as the Hawks are going to come at them with a lot of confidence that they can win in their own house. ’Nique thankful for help Leon Powe plays a big role FL's Take: I love Leon Powe. He is a huge factor for this team as long as Doc gives him a chance. Wizards get back at Cavs FL's Take: This was good that the Wizards beat the Cavs because now they have a game 6 also and the Cavs won't be sitting at home waiting and getting a lot of rest while the Celtics finish their series. The best case scenario would be for the Celtics to close out their series on Friday and for the Cavs to win on Friday and have their series to go 7 games and give the Celtics a rest before having to face them. Paul Pierce issues statement on gesture Pierce: Gesture wasn’t gang sign Menino let his fingers do the mumbling Globe Safe at home How did we get here? Bench once again provides a deep threat FL's Take: The bench is going to be a key to winning on Friday. They have to come through again as they have in the Celtics 3 wins. Pierce tries his hand at issuing a statement Hawks' old habits return No hitting rookie wall for Horford In this job, there's no such thing as security FL's Take: I think some coaches fit certain teams and some don't. Why else would a coach get fired for not winning and then go to another team and win. There are some bad coaches, but most of the time it is a combination of things. Expect some of the fired coaches (except Isiah) to show up on another team and be successful. This just means more teams after Tom Thibodeau, though.

Comments from the Other Side - Hawks Game 5
by FLCeltsFan 8:09 AM
Here are comments found around the Hawks boards during their game 5 with the Celtics. It's nice to see that they recognize how badly Rondo has out played Bibby, but Leon Powe is not a scrub by any stretch of the imagination. The guy's a beast. Tommy even admitted that if Walter hadn't stolen his heart many years ago he would fall in love with Leon. I love Leon! Game 6 is going to be a battle but if the Celtics play like they did in game 5, they will win, no matter how the Hawks play. It does amaze me to see fans wishing injuries or death on a player. I really dislike Kobe Bryant and a few others, but would never wish serious injury on them. Disturbing stuff.
Its funny because all Boston fans think that Tony Allen is the key to shutting down Joe. Despite their 66 wins I believe the Hawks have the Celtics at a breaking point. They can come out and crush their spirits if the Hawks are on fire out of the gates.
Our first two attempts in Boston were abysmal, yet, the momentum of the Hawks victories will certainly be a factor in Beantown.... I would love to see the Hawks somehow steal a victory in Beantown and head back to the A with a lead in the series.
If the theories I've seen are correct though that the Celtics are wearing down against a younger squad then the hill will only become steeper for the C's, home or away. Now maybe the Celtics fans will stop whining about how Stern is against them. It is clear he loves them a lot more than Phoenix fans. I'm really impressed by what the Hawk's have done. However I think Game 5 is when the magic stops. Boston should really learn from their mistakes of games 3, 4 and finish this series in 2 games. I also believe that they will remember the lessons taught in games 3, 4 and return to dominating the eastern conference teams.
Everyone is talking about Boston, but I don't see much of a difference in them. We are just beating them right now. The Celtics have been outplayed by the Hawks the past two games. Do think some things have changed in Boston in the last 2 games. Paul Pierce doesn't seem totally healthy. Doc Rivers has shortened his rotation as the bench players didn't play with as much confidence on the road. Ray Allen's poor D was exposed with the lack of depth contribution. Sam Cassell disappeared.
Well this is fun. I count 2 flops so far. Leon Powe for flopper of the year Posey for runner up flopper? He always has been one though WE ARE MAKING LEON THE SCRUB POWE LOOK LIKE DENNIS RODMAN GRAB THE DAMN REBOUND MY GOD THIS IS SICKENING!!! It's like Powe is doing everything for the Celtics right now. Rebounding, scoring, picking up loose balls.
Minutes played Game 4 for the Celts: KG 42 Allen 45 Pierce 35 Rondo 35 Tonight they play on 1 day's rest Yeah I think the Celts are getting tired. They aren't used to the 40+ miinute war. Our guys, especially Joe, have been condition for this all year. Notice when our kick has happened in each win. If we keep it close until the 4th I think we run past Boston for the 3-2 lead.
Just watched the fourth quarter from Game 4. We can beat this team. And Paul Pierce's decision to try and take a charge from JJ in the final minute and blown layup are still two of the most inexplicable choke jobs I've seen in a while. I know a lot of Hawks fans look at the Suns and their fans and laugh. But today, you will too know and understand the wrath of David Stern. The Hawks will under NO circumstance win this game. They will put all your guys in foul trouble early. You'll get bogus offensive foul calls, phantom fouls at the most inopportune times, etc. After this evening, we will have mutual enemies.
Leone powe is such a damn scrub Tony Allen is either going to allow us to come back right now, or hurt us. AND THERE GOES POWE AGAIN. Can't let Cassell get hot. We saw what happened to the Hawks when he got hot. . Why are we making Leon Powe a bench scrub look like an allstar so far he has 7 pts and 7 rebounds unreal!!!!! Doesn't look like we are going to win this game! We are always in the game because of the Celtics' cockiness..... The Celtics are playing motivated basketball on defense. It's really impressive, they actually look like a 66 win team out there. Rondo is gonna have nightmares for the rest of his career whenever he goes for a layup. Smoove's been owning him this series. Cassell and Powe are the only reasons we are losing this game right we cant let bench scrubs beat us that's unacceptable. Rondo grabbed Smith's leg...lmao, Rondo knew exactly what he was doing. They don't want any part of a fast break with the Hawks. I don't know what player I hate more Rondo or Paul Pierce god there so annoying. You have to be kidding me. Horford being fouled all over the place and they call a travel on him. Stern will do anything he can to make Boston win.. I can't believe that Rondo hit a 3, that is classic. Sometimes you are jinxed If a team that had 66 win in the regular season needs help from the refs just to get out of the first round that is pathetic. We're getting the calls now. Cause that definitely wasn't a foul on pierce. I really hate the damn Celtics....like really. This team makes me wanna punch each and every one of them. Garnett/Pierce/Allen/Posey they all make me want to hit them.
It is truly sad when a 38-year-old alien gimp is raining jumpers on us. I would really like it if Doc Rivers took Gollum out of the game right now and fed him some raw fish as takes his seat on the bench. The 3's by Allen and posey decided this game. Obvious blocking foul by Pierce - he got there late - he's just smiling to be a smart@ss...I'm liking Pierce less and less (and I never liked him much). It's ashame Paul lived from that stabbing. I wished he hadn't. Lol damn man you are harsh I Hate him but I don't wish he died maybe paralzed so he couldn't play again haha. I hate every single Celtic with a passion stupid punks. We better kill them on Friday cause game 7 I predict Hawks will win no doubt about it. I have very little respect for the Celtics now. Watching Garnett [censored] at the refs, and get away with all kinds of crap. Paul Pierce and his gangster fake coolness. Ray Allen and his anal rituals. These guys are just not likeable. Garnett should have been out this game. I can't wait for game 6. To see us give a good punch back.
Boston IS soft. They played soft in games 3 and 4. They're not a great team. Do you think Houston, Chicago, SA, or LA would have lost games 3 and 4? I don't. The Big three has a history of not being clutch or doing anything of importance in the playoffs.
Boston is a great team this year. They beat the hell out of the western conference... The so called big bad bully compare to the east.
The west has a bunch of GOOD teams. Only one of them have ever won a title... That being the Spurs of course. No, truly great team would have lost 2 playoff games to this Hawks team. It's good that the Hawks won 2 games, but this Boston team ain't great. Boston will end it in game 6. Boston doesn't deserve to win no title. If they do, it's an injustice. Horford gets slapped in the face, the same thing he did against Garnett, no Celtic gets a tech, but Woodson does.
We let a scrubb like Powe come in and take rebound after offensive rebound and singlehandedly keep Boston with a lead.
Leon Powe did grab some offensive rebounds and had Chillz guarding him a few times, and Powe just outhustled and outmuscled the weaker Chillz. Powe just wanted it more.
Is Garnett a mental midget or what..... What the hell was he saying in that post game interview?
Can't wait for justice to return in game 6.
We got fouled SO many times and didn't have it called...They have to foul us because we are so much more athletic than them. We better get those calls at home.
The only thing I didn't really agree with was Smith getting a tech, compared to Garnett basically shouting at the ref and receiving nothing.
Well the only one that really gave me a beef was the flagant call on Horford. Don't see how that was remotedly flagrant. Someone might have to look up the rule and explain it to me.
Hell yeah, Posey's 44 flops during the game didn't help either. I hate flopping (you included Zaza)
Mike Bibby had 1 assist Rondo has 7 assists and no turnovers. Bibby had more turnovers than assists. That is TOTALLY unacceptable.
He can't get past Rondo! It's pathetic... This kid has basically shut him down. He layed off him in game 4, that's the only reason Bibby got 18 in the 1H. You notice he scored none in the 2nd. He can't outplay a kid in his second year in the league... that's pathetic
On the series Bibby has 13 assists and 12 turnovers while shooting 33%. Nice job from our $14 million dollar man. Meanwhile Rondo has 40 assists and 4 TOs.

Celtics Take 3-2 Lead with 110-85 Win
Wednesday, April 30, 2008
by FLCeltsFan 11:41 PM
The Celtics looked more like the team that won 66 games in the regular season in this game. They got back to the basics that made them the best team in basketball this season as they played team defense, moved the ball to find the open man and the bench came in and gave the team some valuable minutes. The Celtics had 6 players in double figures led by Leon Powe with 10 points and 7 rebounds (5 on the offensive end), James Posey with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, and Sam Cassell who finished with 13 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist.
Paul Pierce had the best game of the series as he finished with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists and he was more aggressive taking the ball to the basket and more aggressive on defense. Perk spent much of the first half on the bench with foultrouble but played great defense in 22 minutes of play finishing with 2points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block. Rondo had another solid game with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists 1 steal and 1 block. Ray Allen hit some big three pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The game was once again very chippy with Horford being charged with a flagrant foul for grabbing KG around the neck and throwing him to the floor with 57 seconds left in the half. With 3:14 left in the third quarter, both KG and Joe Johnson were called for technicals for talking and getting a bit heated. In the fourth quarter the Hawks coach and Josh Smith were both called for technicals. There were several hard fouls on both sides with Ray raking Horford across the face on one foul. The refs did a good job of keeping it all in check, though.
The Celtics bench came up big tonight, outscoring the Hawks bench 35 - 14 with Leon Powe leading the way, filling in very well for Perk when he went out with 2 quick fouls. Doc didn't need to over play his starters with KG and Ray playing 37 minutes, Pierce playing 33 minutes and Rondo playing 31 minutes. The Celtics were hustling and diving for loose balls. Rondo lost some skin on his wrist diving for a loose ball at one point. The Celtics also showed their effort as they out-rebounded the Hawks 39-28 after being out-rebounded in both games in Atlanta. The Celtics did a great job of taking care of the ball with just 10 turnovers.
Most importantly, the Celtics defense was back. They doubled Johnson every time he touched the ball and they played great team defense, preventing the Hawks from running and getting easy baskets as they did in the previous two games. The Celtics shot 54% from the field while holding the Hawks to 41%. The Hawks went 25-29 from the line while the Celtics were 11-15 so once again, the Hawks got to the line almost twice as much as the Celtics.
The Wizards beat the Cavs in Cleveland forcing that series to a 6th game also which is good news for the Celtics. If the Cavs had closed out that series tonight they would have had a chance to rest up before the 2nd round started. The Celtics need to win in Atlanta on Friday so they can be the team getting some rest. All seems to be right in Celtics Land again.

Comments from the Other Side - Bonus Edition
by FLCeltsFan 9:22 AM
Here is a bonus edition of Comments from the Other Side with comments on the league decision not to suspend anyone for game 5. There is no denying that any suspensions would have hurt the Celtics more than the Hawks and so Hawks fans were rooting for KG and Perk to be suspended. Most of them were calling for Williams to be benched anyway so that wouldn't have bothered them. Here are some of the reactions from Hawks fans on the announcement.
That's crap! This is a business decision by Stern. All the commercials done by Gatorade, ESPN, the league....KG would be too much of a loss...even if he did push a referee!!
The KG and the Perkins/Marvin thing are separate situations....but Marvin/Perkins not getting suspended is a joke considering how Stern kept saying talking about enforcing the rules last year. I also think KG should atleast get fined for that. You can't just pretend like nothing happened when he clearly shoved the ref out the way.
The NBA, where the almightly dollar happens...
If that's the case, I can live with it. The hypocrisy of it will annoy Suns fans to no end. Regardless, the Hawks need to be prepared for a quick whistle and a tightly officiated game five. I wouldn't be surprised if the word from the top is make an example out of someone if they mess up.
Stern hearts the Celtics.
Not really suprised KG didn't get suspended but I'm a little shocked that Marvin or Perkins weren't.
I'm not surprised at all. Honestly, it'd feel even better beating Boston with KG on the court.
its so obvious that he wants a lakers celtics final. screw stern and the politics
According to the letter of the law, players from each team should be (Perkins, Marv especially). However, I guess the League really does want to see the Celtics make it all the way...they know whats up. They know that them losing Perkins (or worse Garnett) is a hell of a lot bigger blow than us losing Marvin.
THE LEAGUE SUCKS!!!! No Suspension = Stern wants Boston in finals...
The letters of this law, were written in pencil....
I'm not mad about Perkins or Marvin getting off, they were innoncent anyways. All they were guilty of was trying to get a closer look. THERE'S FREAKIN VIDEO AND PHOTO EVIDENCE OF KG SHOVING A REF! THAT SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC?!
I knew the NBA was crooked when I read that David Stern advised James Dolan of the New York Knicks to hire Jerry Colangelo as President and Kiki Vandeweigh as GM. Now, what business does the commission of the league have in recommended anyone for any team?
Man that is some BS!!!!! He was quick to give miami a replay but now when this happens they do nothing??? And what about Pierce? He should be suspended too!!!
Stern is a Czar, he doesn't have to follow the rules.
I would have taken a Marvin for Perkins tradeoff. That would have hurt them more than us.
I can't be the only one who thinks this is a good thing. Seriously, this has been a fantastic series and it would be a shame to see it tainted by suspensions, just like it was a shame last year when Amare and Diaw got suspended. All personal interests aside, as a basketball fan, you have to like the fact that the league is going to let a memorable playoff matchup be settled on the court and not in the league office, no?
I am beyond livid. No KG pushed the ref first then the ref grabbed him and then KG really pushed the ref.
This just proves rules are not rules when it benefits a team the NBA wants to win. Garnett touches the ref first in that video and he can break any rule he wants. This disgusts me. IN 05 when Walker was suspended all he did was move the ref over to yell at the ref that gave him a T when he was literally protecting his young teammate from Jermaine O'Neil who had almost pushed him down and the media was all over Walker being suspended and all he did was move the ref. Every single one of these hypocrite news people like Steven A Smith and ESPN agreed with the suspension. The rule states if you touch a ref you get suspended PERIOD. There is no debate unless you Kevin Garnett apparently.
Did anyone honestly believe that KG would be suspended? No need to your hopes up. He got T-ed up for throwing an elbow after the whistle, but the ref didn't give him a second T for shoving him around. No way that he was going to be suspended if he wasn't ejected from the game.
I was pretty certain only Marv and Perkins were going to be suspended. But hey, its good to have Marv here. However, with the way both Marv and Perkins have played THIS SERIES, losing Perkins would have easily hurt the Celtics a little more.
As we all know stern is doomed either way. 80 percent of both sides currently think he is impacting the series to screw their team and it happens in most series.
On the marvin/perkins you have to suspend both or neither. That rule enforcement used to be 100 percent automatic and then they relaxed it for the most part.so I am not surprised that they let it slide when neither guy got involved or went very far On garnett, I think the big shove looks bad at first but if you look he's not really pushing the ref as much as he is yanking his arms back from the ref aggressively to get him to let go. I definitely think it could have been a suspension but I don't think its automatic. By the same token zaza headbutted him and I thought that would be an automatic suspension. Again I think you have to suspend both or neither.
I am really stunned by this. I would have thought Stern would want to be consistent after taking the hard line last year. They irreversibly altered the Western Conference finalist and ultimately the champion last year. Now they won't meddle with a first round series. Unbelievable.
The Celtics are struggling against the lowest seed in all the playoffs. They could have lost Perkins and KG. Had they lost them for just game 5, it's likely that we would have won the series. Stern's ruling is simply to snub us. Maybe we don't have the fanbase of a Boston Celtic. Maybe our record is not where people want it. However, what we have been a party to (a victim of) is not the system changing for more leniency... but that of the system changing to benefit the league as a whole. Stern just conveniently changed the rules to give his team an upperhand.
Photo shop of David Stern with a red bozo nose, red clown wig, and a KG / Celtics jersey. Can we make posters of that for game 6.

Random Thoughts 4/30
by FLCeltsFan 7:47 AM
I'm as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs today. All season long, I was certain that the Celtics would come out and play tough team defense and that would at least lead to a chance to beat any team in the league. After watching the Celtics defense disintegrate and be nowhere to be found in the last two games, I just don't know which team will show up tonight. Will the Good Celtics show up? Can they pull together as a team and get back to playing team defense and shut down the Hawks? Or, will the Bad Celtics show up and allow the Hawks to get off any shot they want including getting to the hoop at will? I just don't know. But I hope that these Celtics can go back to the way they played all season and put an end to this nonsense. The Celtics are the better team and it is time they started to act like it.
The Celtics have now resorted to giving out tee shirts for tonight's game. I guess it is a case of if nothing else is working let's pump up the fans a bit more.
The Cavs and Wizards play again tonight with the Cavs having a chance to close out the series tonight. If they do, that means that they get a long rest before they play again because the Celtics will have at least one more game to play after tonight. Delonte has suddenly become the key to that series and the key to making Cleveland's attack work. I am really happy that Delonte landed in a good spot. I would love to have him come back to Boston, but I am pretty sure Cleveland is going to keep him.
I still have concerns about Doc as head coach. Coaching becomes so much more important in the playoffs as it becomes a chess match between coaches in making adjustments for the next game. So far, Doc seems to be playing checkers and not chess. Doc has never won a playoff series but he never had talent like he does this season. But he has the talent and we find ourselves tied with a team we should have swept. Ok, granted that the Hawks may have surprised us for game 3, but the adjustments should have been made and the team prepared to match them in game 4 and come away with that win and yet we didn't. You could say that the players settled for too many jumpers and didn't attack. The coach is supposed to call for those changes and ensure that his players implement them. The coach is supposed to change strategies if one isn't working. If they players aren't playing right. If they aren't playing team defense, it is up to the coach to get them to do it. We know what these players are capable of and yet they aren't doing it. I have to keep coming back to the coaches. I want to believe in Doc, I really do. But, I keep having these concerns and he hasn't allayed them yet.
And I know I am not alone in my concerns. This was a recurring theme in Bill Simmons' chat yesterday. Here is a quote from his chat that I found interesting:
I'll say this: It took 72 hours to undo 84 games - they don't have a rotation anymore, every bench guy has lost his confidence except Posey, and everyone is looking for their own shot. What scares me is that they played hard in both games. By the way, I'm typing this chat with 2 broken hands - after Doc left Ray Allen on Joe Johnson for the entire fourth quarter, I sparred for 10 rounds with the wall next to my sofa. If Doc can right the ship and get the Celtics back to playing like they played for the 84 games before their meltdown in Atlanta, I will give Doc the credit for doing a great job, but if they can't, you have to look at the coaching because you can't say he doesn't have the players to get it done any longer.
This off season may set a record for the number of head coaching hirings. Already there have been New York, Chicago, Charlotte and Miami with reports of Phoenix and Dallas soon to follow. With all these teams looking for coaches I don't see any way Tom Thibodeau doesn't land one of them. We need to get ready to face a formidable defense in one of our opponents next season. I give Thibodeau a lot of credit for how good this team is this season, but I don't know if he will make a great head coach as from all reports, he isn't a media kind of guy and isn't really a people person. He is great at game analysis and x's and o's but whether he can deal with the personalities of the players and the media remains to be seen. Doc excels in these areas and that is what makes Doc and Tom a great coaching duo. The have very complementary strengths.
I really have a problem with David Stern and his officials. In many games the refs clearly have an agenda or else they are so incompetent it isn't funny. In Violet Palmer's case the latter may be true, but most of the other refs can't miss that many calls in a game without trying to. In many cases they are right there and looking at the play and still don't make the call. Whether it comes from the league to influence the outcome of a game for some reason or whether it comes from the individual officials, there is something rotten in the state of the officiating. I was hoping that after the Tim Donaghy scandal that the league would tighten up and we would see them call the games more cleanly but no such hope. If anything, the officiating this season has been even worse over all. And the worst thing about it is that players, coaches and owners can't do a thing about it. If you question the refs, you are fined, suspended or otherwise disciplined. They are little Napoleons out there with no one to question their authority. There was a huge disparity in free throws in game 4. Some of that was because the Hawks were attacking the basket more than the Celtics, but there was a lot of contact that wasn't called when the Celtics did drive. Maybe that's why the Celtics stopped driving. They were getting mugged and weren't getting the calls anyway. Josh Smith should have fouled out if they called all of his fouls inside. In the meantime, on the other end, the Celtics were called for touch fouls and even phantom contact. Stern would be much better suited to get his own house in order with his officials instead of worrying about who is making what sign on the sidelines of a game. Otherwise, we haven't seen the last of the scandals involving the officials.
The Celtics dodged a huge bullet when the league announced yesterday that there would be no suspensions resulting from the game 4 skirmish. Losing both Perk and KG would have almost guaranteed a loss in game 5. All I could think of was how the league suspended Amare Stoudamire last season and that, in effect, gave the series to San Antonio. I love Perk. I love his work ethic. I love his attitude. I love his honesty. Here is Perk's reaction yesterday while waiting to hear if he would be suspended.
“If they look at the film they’ll see that I was already up when the fight started,” said the center, who is often up off his seat and straddling the sidelines. “To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about that. It’s hard to be thinking about something like that at the time. You’re into the game, really. “I didn’t realize until I watched it on tape last night. Whatever happens happens. If I do get suspended, I believe that we can win the game.” “Right now I’m just really saying my prayers,” he said. “I’m already mentally prepared for either one but I want to play. If I did the wrong thing I did the wrong thing. I just gotta man up and suffer the consequences.” On the other hand, here is KG's reaction: “Suspended? For what?” he asked incredulously. “No, the ref grabbed me.” Game 5 tonight is the biggest game of the year for the Celtics. They have to get back to what got them here and come out strong and most importantly, play defense. I expect the crowd to be loud enough to rock the building to its foundation. And, I expect my Celtics to come out and play like we have come to expect them to. Here's to Ubuntu, rebounding and defense.

Game Preview - Hawks at Celtics - Game 5
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
by FLCeltsFan 10:20 PM
AT Atlanta Hawks (2-2) at Boston Celtics (2-2) Postseason Game #5 – Home Game #3 Wednesday, April 30, 2008 8:30 PM ET TNT, CSN HD TD Banknorth Garden
Probable Starting Matchups PG: Rajon Rondo vs Mike Bibby SG: Joe Johnson vs Ray Allen SF: Paul Pierce vs Marvin Williams PF: Kevin Garnett vs Josh Smith C: Kendrick Perkins vs Al Horford
Sixth Man: James Posey vs Josh Childress
Key Matchups Ray Allen vs Joe Johnson Joe Johnson almost single handedly beat the Celtics in game 4 scoring 22 of his 35 points in the 4th quarter. Look for the Celtics to double Johnson or put Posey or Tony Allen on him to try to slow him down. Ray needs to make him work harder on the defensive end to take a little more out of him on offense.
Kevin Garnett vs Josh Smith In the 4th quarter of tame 4, the only two players to score were Joe Johnson and Josh Smith. Smith finished the game with 28 points. KG is going to have to apply more of what made him the defensive player of the year to slow down Smith who along with Johnson has been beating the Celtics in a two man attack.
Rajon Rondo vs Mike Bibby The matchup of the point guards is still an important one. Rondo completely out played Bibby in the two games in Boston but in Atlanta, Bibby found his game again. Rondo will need to keep Bibby from hitting those open 3's and will also have to make him work on defense by taking the ball to the hoop.
Keys to the Game DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!!!! The major reason the Celtics lost games 3 and 4 is that they went away from playing the kind of defense that made them the best defensive team in the league during the regular season. The Celtics allowed the Hawks to shoot 48% in the two games in Atlanta and that just isn't acceptable. They need to control the pace instead of allowing the Hawks to do that and they can do that by clamping down on defense. They must get back to basics and play the smothering team defense that they have played all season. It is defense that will win this series and the championship.
Rebound As the old saying goes: "Offense sells tickets, defense wins games, rebounding wins championships." I think this is because the majority of rebounding is effort and desire and the team that wants it more and puts out more effort will get more rebounds and will win the game. The Celtics were out-rebounded in both games in Atlanta and they need to put out the effort on the boards to limit their second and third chance shots.
Free Throws The Celtics missed 8 free throws in game 4 and lost by only 5. Missing free throws is the result of a lack of focus. The Celtics need to regain their focus and when they do, they will hit more of their free throws. They can't afford to give away any points, especially from the free throw line.
Be Aggressive The Celtics have been settling for too many jumpers. They need to be more aggressive in taking the ball to the basket and either get the basket or draw the foul. They must also be more aggressive going after loose balls and rebounds. They have allowed the Hawks to be the more aggressive team, attacking the basket and going after loose balls etc. The Celtics must now become the aggressors and attack the basket.
Ball Movement The Celtics must get back to moving the ball and finding the open man instead of each player trying to run his own offense. They have taken too many quick shots and have gotten away from the team offense that has made them so successful all year.
X-Factor BenchPlay Other than James Posey, the bench hasn't been getting it done in the last two games. In the first two games, the bench played very well and gave the team a boost when they came in as well as giving the starters a rest without giving up anything on the court. The bench must be more effective on both ends of the court.
Game Notes: We all thought that Game 3 was a wake up call for the Celtics as they got beat by a team they had dominated for the first two games and that they were expected to sweep. Pierce was fired up after being taunted by Horford. KG was mad. Perk had his nose blooded. They should have come out with focus and put them away in game 4. But, they must have hit the snooze alarm because although there were spurts of the Celtics who won the first 2 games in the series, those spurts were brief.
The Celtics have allowed the Hawks to build confidence and they are not going to just lie down and let the Celtics beat them. But, the Celtics have beaten the top teams in the league all season with their defense and team play and if they can find their focus and get back to that stifling team defense and get back to ubuntu, they should be able to beat this Hawks team.
The Celtics are coming home and Doc has cautioned them not to expect everything to be ok just because they are home. They have to work to fix what went wrong in Atlanta. The Celtics must get back to playing the team defense that made them the best defensive team in the league. That defense was nowhere to be found in Atlanta. How does a team forget how to play the defense they played all season?
The Celtics also have to be more aggressive and take the ball to the hoop more and settle for jumpers less. They have to be more aggressive going after rebounds and loose balls. They need to get back to moving the ball to find the open man. And, they have to get their focus back. They let the Hawks take them completely out of their game and let the young Hawks frustrate them. It shouldn't be all that hard since they played that kind of ball for 84 games and played the crappy kind of ball for the last two. Hopefully all that learned behavior will come back to them and they will come out with the win. As the clocks above signify, time is running out and the Celtics must snap out of their fog and once again dominate this series or their season could be over way too early.

No Suspensions for Game 5
by FLCeltsFan 6:37 PM
According to the Boston Globe:
The Celtics will have no fines or suspensions stemming from a skirmish during Game 4 of their playoff series Monday night against the Hawks in Atlanta, according to an NBA official.
Celtics forward Kevin Garnett pushed referee Ed Rush off of him during the skirmish. Celtics center Kendrick Perkins and Atlanta forward Marvin Williams also stepped slightly on the playing floor from the bench.
Garnett said during today's practice he didn't think he should be suspended and Perkins expressed hope he wouldn't be. The end result is that both teams will have a full complement of players available for Game 5 in Boston Wednesday night. This is very good news. I have been on pins and needles all day watching for the announcement. A suspension for either Perk or KG would hurt the Celtics much more than a suspension for Marvin Williams. Now, hopefully the Celtics can find their defense again and get back to winning.
