Looking for a Free Agent Point Guard?

One of the positions the Celtics will be looking to address in this off season is the back up point guard position. They signed Sam Cassell last season but he didn't work out as we had hoped. I don't see Sam coming back. Eddie House was the back up point for most of the season as well as in the finals and he is a free agent. I like Eddie and hope they re-sign him for next season. But even if they do, he can back up Ray Allen at the shooting guard position so as not to over play him in the regular season and we may still be looking for a point guard.
The Celtics also have last year's draft pick Gabe Pruitt and Danny has said that he expects Pruitt to be able to contribute this season. Pruitt played very well in the D-League last season and would be a good back up for Rondo if he is ready for NBA play. Danny may look to sign a free agent point guard in the off season or he may wait until mid season to see how Pruitt plays before looking for someone to fill that slot.
There is no shortage of veteran point guards on the free agent list if Danny is looking to sign one. Here is a list of the unrestricted free agents. There are also some intriguing restricted free agents such as Delonte West, but for now, I am listing just the unrestricted FA's and their 2007-08 stats.
Earl Boykins 5'5" 5.1 ppg, 2.7 apg, .4 spg, 15.9 mpg
Chris Duhon 6'1" 5.8 ppg, 4 apg, .7 spg, 22.6 mpg
Tyronn Lue 6'0" 5.8 ppg, 1.5 apg, .2 spg, 14.8 mpg
Anthony Carter 6'2" 7.8 ppg, 5.5 apg, 1.5 spg, 28 mpg
Lindsey Hunter 6'2" 2.4 ppg, 1.4 apg, .5 spg, 9.0 mpg
Baron Davis 6'3" 21.8 ppg, 7.6 apg, 2.3 spg, 39 mpg
Dan Dickau 6'0" 5.3 ppg, 2.6 apg, .5 spg, 15.6 mpg
Shaun Livingston 6'7" 9.3 ppg, 5.1 apg, 1.1 spg, 29.9 mpg (06-07 stats)
Smush Parker 6'4" 5.9 ppg, 3.0 apg, .9 spg, 21.2 mpg
Jason Williams 6'1" 8.8 ppg, 4.6 apg, 1.2 spg 28.1 mpg
Sebastian Telfair 6'0" 9.3 ppg, 5.9 apg, 1.0 spg, 28.1 mpg
Jannero Pargo 6'1" 8.1 ppg, 2.4 apg, .6 spg, 18.7 mpg
Carlos Arroyo 6'2" 6.9 ppg, 3.5 apg, .4 spg, 20.4 mpg
Keyon Dooling 6'3" 8.1 ppg, 1.8 apg, .5 spg, 18.5 mpg
Kevin Ollie 6'2" 1.8 ppg, 1.0 apg, .3 spg, 7.5 mpg
Beno Udrich 6'3" 12.8 ppg, 4.3 apg, .9 spg, 32 mpg
Anthony Johnson 6'3" 5.6 ppg, 3.8 apg, .8 spg, 22.2 mpg
Damon Stoudamire 5'10" 5.3 ppg, 2.8 apg, .5 spg, 17.3 mpg
Jacques Vaughn 6'1" 4.1 ppg, 2.1 apg, .3 spg, 15.4 mpg
Gilbert Arenas 6'4" 19.4 ppg, 5.1 apg, 1.8 spg, 32.6 mpg
Roger Mason 6'5" 9.1 ppg, 1.7 apg, .5 spg, 21.3 mpg
Some of these players are out of the question like Gilbert Arenas who is looking for a big payday. There are a few intriguing prospects like Shaun Livingston, Chris Duhon, Tyronn Lue, Jannero Pargo and Jason Williams. Any of these would make a nice back up for Rondo if Danny is looking to sign one in the off season. Rumors have been swirling that Danny is interested in Livingston, Lue and Williams. Lue may have the inside track since he is one of KG's best friends and also played for Doc when he coached in Orlando. Shaun Livingston is a very intriguing prospect. He is 6'7" with a ton of talent, but hasn't been able to stay healthy and is currently rehabbing from a horrible knee injury. Teams can talk with free agents on Monday, July 1 after midnight. They can't be signed until July 8, but agreements can be made as of the 1st. With House and Pruitt as possible point guards, Danny may look to go after a back up for Perk first. The Celtics will also be running their free agent and rookie camp Wednesday to Friday and so this should be an interesting week.
