From the Boston Globe:
Celtics forward Kevin Garnett became the first Boston player to be voted as the league's Defensive Player of the Year today.
Garnett earned 493 points (90 first place votes, 12 second place, seven third place). Denver Nuggets center Marcus Camby finished second with 178 points.
Garnett led the Celtics to hold opponents to 90.3 points per game. Garnett averaged 7.3 defensive rebounds per game, 1.2 blocks per game, and 1.4 steals per game. He had a season-high seven blocks at Chicago on Dec. 12.
Kia Motors will donate a seven-passenger SUV in Garnett's name to the Boston Center for Youths and Families, which supports KG's Big Ticket Challenge Program. KG truly deserved this award and though I know he could care less about individual awards, his team play should be rewarded by this kind of award. I doubt he will get the MVP since Kobe seems to be the darling of the media for some bizarre reason. But, this award is better anyway since it was the Celtics defense that made them the best team in the league and it will be defense that will win the championship. Congrats to KG - he deserves this and more.
