Pierce Practices and The Gerald Green Show
Saturday, February 10, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 7:23 PM
February 10, 2007 Celtics.com is reporting that Pierce went through his first full practice today.
Pierce finished Saturday's practice wearing a green jersey along with Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Brian Scalabrine and Al Jefferson, and according to Doc Rivers he'll likely start against the Timberwovles on Sunday.
"Today was the first full practice that he's actually been through. He made it through it and it looked like his wind was OK," said Rivers. Also reported is that Wally won't travel with the team to Minnesota for tomorrow night's game. He said he will test the ankle again Monday to determine whether he will play Wednesday against Milwaukee.
An NBA representative stopped by practice to give Gerald Green a rundown of the new rules for the Slam Dunk contest. Green, who first dunked when he was 15, has been studying tapes of prior contests, but says he has something that the NBA has never seen before. That said, word out of New York is that Nate Robinson, a guy who's never been shy about talking, also claims to have a new dunk as well. Rebok is giving Gerald a lot of publicity for the dunk contest. Go to the Rebok website to check out The Gerald Green Show.

Celtics Hit Bottom
by FLCeltsFan 10:01 AM
February 10, 2007 The Celtics now have the worst record in the league. The Celtics 17th straight loss last night coupled with the Memphis win over the Wolves (our next opponent)moves the Celtics behind Memphis for the bottom spot.
It seems that the longer the streak of losses goes, the worse the team plays. In the beginning they were playing tough and playing hard and staying in games until the end. The last two games weren't even close. The biggest indication that the losing is getting to the players is that their shooting percentages have dropped dramatically. We shot 32% and 34% in the last two games and that was inflated by some easy baskets in garbage time when the game was out of reach and the opposing team stopped playing defense. Players who used to be good shooters are no longer hitting their shots.
Opposing teams are playing their best games of the season against us because no one wants to be the team that Boston beats. Players like Mikki Moore are having career nights against us. We need to get a win to stop this spiral into oblivion. I was hoping that Pierce's return would give the team an emotional lift and we could beat the also slumping Nets. But the Nets came out playing like it was the Playoffs and rolled over the Celtics who were mostly standing around waiting for Pierce to win it for them. Hopefully they can come out with more spunk against the Wolves and end this streak. But you know for sure that Ricky D. and Blount will do their best not to lose to the team that traded them. Even the draft doesn't look that appealing any more with rumors of Oden staying in school and history in the lottery not on our side. It's not easy being Green these days.

Pierce Returns but Celtics Lose 17th in a Row
Friday, February 9, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:16 PM
February 9, 2007 Paul Pierce surprised everyone by playing in tonight's game. He played 20 minutes but was obviously rusty shooting 4-16 and scoring 9 points with 4 rebounds and 1 assist. It was good to see him back. He wore a sleeve on his elbow and at one point was holding the elbow after it was hit. After shooting 1-11 in the first half, he did hit 3-5 in the second half.
But even with Pierce's return, the result of the game was the same. Celtics lost their 17th game in a row, losing to the Nets 92-78. For the second game our shooting was atrocious, shooting only 34% from the field as a team. Doc should have a practice with nothing but shooting drills as our offense has gone south lately. Also we were out rebounded 45-40. We have been keeping our turnovers down somewhat and tonight had 15 turnovers to 18 for the Nets.
Delonte West was the only one hitting his shots as he was 8-16 for 21 points with 2 rebounds 1 assist and 3 steals. Rondo finished with 6 points on 1-7 shooting with 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Telfair played 7 minutes and had 4 points with 1 assist. Allen Ray played 4 minutes and only registered 1 steal.
Scal started at the 4 and finished with 8 points on 2-8 shooting with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Al had another very solid night and won the Tommy Award for his 13 points on 5-13 shooting with 17 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Perk had 1 point, 3 rebounds and 1 steal in 16 minutes. He still looks like he is laboring with the foot injury as his motion seems limited.
Gomes had an off game shooting 2-8 for 9 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Green played 16 minutes and scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting with 2 rebounds and 1 block. Kandi and Powe both registered DNP's.
As this streak continues, our offense has really gone downhill. We aren't going to beat anyone shooting 34%. It seems like too many of the players are passing up open shots to try to dribble in or pass the ball off and as a result our offense seems to be stifled and when they do take the shots they just aren't falling. This is something they are going to have to overcome if they are going to end this streak. Next up is the Wolves and you know that Ricky D and Blount aren't going to want to lose to us so it isn't going to get any easier, even with Pierce coming back. The sad thing is that individually, the players seem to be making progress but as a team, it just isn't coming together. Hopefully it will come together soon or we could be setting a new NBA record for consecutive losses.

Pierce May Play Tonight
by FLCeltsFan 1:06 PM
February 9, 2007 The Globe is reporting that Pierce was a surprise participant at this morning's shoot around and that he is feeling good after his lastest set back. They are reporting that he may play tonight with limitations on his minutes.
As of now, the limits are 15 minutes for a game and no more than three minutes without a break. "That's hard because you can't even get warm in three minutes,'' Rivers said. If Pierce does not play tonight, Rivers indicated that the captain would in all likelihood make his return on Sunday in Minnesota. His return would give the Celtics a huge emotional boost even if he wouldn't be able to play all that much.
They also report that Wally did some spots shooting after practice but that he would not play tonight.

Fiddlin' and Diddlin' on Friday
by FLCeltsFan 9:23 AM
February 9, 2007 I have been busy working on the Carnival of the NBA which will be posted here on Monday so haven't had much time to do links and articles. Today is the day that the streak ends. I feel it. There is an article on Tufts Daily that says that all things good and bad for the Celtics end at 16. The championships ended with 16 twenty one years ago. So tonight, the losing streak ends at 16 in spite of Pierce's set back and Wally's third sprained ankle and Perk's plantar fasciitis and Doc's coaching.
Speaking of Doc's coaching, Steve Bulpett has an article that tells us that Doc is hoping to stick around and see this team through to the hopeful end of a championship run. The problem I have with this is that I see Doc's coaching as part of the problem and I don't see the team making significant progress with Doc as the coach.
The Herald Notebook has a medical update on Pierce and Wally. Pierce was released from the hospital yesterday but there is no timetable for his return. Wally is back on the shelf with his 3rd ankle sprain. If it wasn't for bad luck, this team would have no luck at all. This article also mentions that Scal has been hitting his shots and that is good news because he is going to shoot them whether he makes them or not.
Jeff Goodman has a piece in the Herald about Durant and the case he is making for being the first pick instead of the second. He then runs down the consolation prizes expected to be taken after Oden and Durant.
Shira Springer reports that other teams are motivated to play their best against the Celtics so as not to be remembered as the team that lost to the Celtics to end their record setting streak. This is going to make it harder and harder for the Celtics to pull out a win. This is compounded by the fact that with each loss, the Celtics become more and more frustrated and will be tighter at the end of games and their play will deteriorate as each player tries to do too much to win the game.
Eric Weiss has a good piece on Celtics Blog that reviews our options at this point. Danny needs to think in terms of base hits rather than hitting a home run with one player.
SignOnSanDiego reminds us that our current plight didn't happen overnight but it is the result of a long tale of woe starting with the deaths of Len Bias and Reggie Lewis and continuing through the Tim Duncan tank job and Rick Pitino's disastrous reign. With all that bad luck and bad management, it will take a few years of good management and good luck to right this ship. With all the injuries this season, you could consider this season bad luck or good luck, depending on the results of the draft.
Wave3 has a good story on Rondo. The more I read about this kid the more I like him. He is clearly our PG of the future as he just has the tools and court sense you can't teach a player. He has moved to the head of the do not trade list in my opinion.
Yahoo Sports has a good article on Pistol Pete Maravich who has always been one of my heros. One of the biggest tragedies in this league is that he retired from the Celtics the season they won a championship. His legacy still lives in players today as he inspires a whole new generation of players.
Esco33 posted something on Celtics Green that may be reason for hope.
Teams that have had a losing streaks of 15 or more games in the past few years have received the number one pick that following draft.
Examples were:
Rockets with Yao Cavs with Bron Magic with Dwighty
Hopefully, next year it will say:
Celtics in 2007 with Oden. We can only hope that this trend continues.
The Celtics host the New Jersey Nets tonight who have been having their own problems with injury and consistency. Hopefully the streak ends tonight or else we may be setting new records that we really don't want to. Join us on Celtics Green tonight for the play by play.

Not So Sweet 16 - Celtics Lose to Heat 91-79
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:06 PM
February 7, 2007 Although they played well and stayed with the Heat early, once again the Celtics faded in the second half and lost their 16th in a row. The frustration is starting to show on the court as Delonte got a Technical for complaining about a call and almost got another later on. The Celtics out rebounded the Heat 48-42 and they had only 11 turnovers to 16 for the Heat, but the shooting was the problem tonight as the Celtics shot 32% for the game.
Rondo played a solid 36 minutes and drew a lot of praise from Bob Cousy who was calling the game with Mike and Tommy. He finished with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals. West played 30 minutes and shot 4-17 for 10 points to go with 2 rebounds, 8 assists and 1 steal. But the frustration was showing in the normally even tempered Delonte as he was called for a technical. He isn't playing his best and may still be coming back from that flu that knocked him down a few games ago. Telfair played 15 minutes and finished with 4 points and 1 assist. Ray played 9 minutes but had a terrible shooting night going 1-5 for 3 points with 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
Perk started at center and did a very good job of defending Shaq although he was limited to 17 minutes because of foul trouble. He finished with 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks. Al had another double double and won the Tommy Award finishing with 13 points on 6-17 shooting to go with 16 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.
Gomes had had 15 points on 6-19 shooting with 6 rebounds and 1 block. He was hitting his shots early but then cooled off and couldn't seem to hit anything. Green had an off night all the way around. He shot 1-6 for 3 points with 5 fouls and 1 turnover. Wally played 14 minutes and shot 5-11 with 1 rebound and 1 assist and then he left in the 3rd quarter with another sprained ankle as he stepped on Powe's foot as he went out of bounds by the Celtics bench to get a rebound. He didn't return and in his post game press conference, Doc said it was a bad sprain.
Kandi played 10 minutes and pulled down 3 rebounds. Scal played 13 minutes and had 6 points but no rebounds. Contrast that with Powe's 3 minutes playing time in which he pulled down 3 rebounds and scored 3 points. Mike and Tommy were saying that he does't do much wrong when he gets on the court and they are right. He produces when he gets to play. I still don't understand why he doesn't get more playing time.
Another tough loss. Wally is back out again before he even got back to playing shape after the last 2. The losing has to be getting to the team. Hopefully they are pulling together and not turning on each other. If they can get through this season with all the injuries, they will hopefully be a much stronger team. Rondo is coming along and looking better every game. I hope Doc continues to start him. I would really like to see Powe get more minutes but it looks doubtful that he will since Doc was talking about shortening the rotation to 7 players in his post game press conference. Hopefully we can come out strong against New Jersey and finally get past this losing streak.

Pierce Sent Home with Elbow Infection and Fever
by FLCeltsFan 1:23 PM
February 6, 2007 According to Steve Bulpett of the Herald, Pierce was sent home from Detroit with an elbow infection and fever.
The Celtic captain awoke this morning with bad swelling in the elbow and a high fever. He will be checked by team physician Brian McKeon when he lands later this afternoon. At that time, the severity of the problem will be determined.
“And the hits just keep on coming,'’ deadpanned Doc Rivers.
This is, by the way, the same elbow on which Pierce had offseason surgery to alleviate bursitis that dogged him last year (he missed the last three games after playing through pain for weeks).
Pierce had made the trip here with the Celtics to further his comeback from a left foot stress reaction. But when he came down for the team meeting prior to shootaround this morning, it was evident he was in bad shape.
“He said (Monday) that his elbow was bothering him,'’ said Rivers. “They looked at it but it wasn’t bad at all. But then this morning he came in and we were like, `Oh, my gosh.’ Eddie (Lacerte, the trainer) wanted him out of here quick.
“We’ll see,'’ the coach added. “It’s infected and it’s pretty big. And he’s got a pretty high fever.'’ Hmmmm could this be phase 2 of the Celtics tank job?

Some Ping Pong Ball Statistics
by FLCeltsFan 10:45 AM
February 6, 2007
I have been doing some research in response to a question by Esco33 over on Celtics Green and found some surprising results.
The Lottery was instituted in 1985 and all 7 non playoff teams had an equal chance to win. Then in 1987 they only decided the 1st 3 by the lottery. In 1990 they went to the weighted lottery that we have today with all non playoff teams in the lottery and the worst teams having more chances than the better ones.
If you go back to 1987, here are the results. Record (# of first picks) Worst (3) 2 (3) 3 (6) 4 (2) 5 (3) 6 (2) 7 (1) 8 (0) 9 (0) 10 (0) 11 (1)
Now just going from the 1990 when the current weighted lottery was begun Record (#of 1st picks) Worst (2) 2 (3) 3 (4) 4 (2) 5 (2) 6 (2) 7 (1) 8 (0) 9 (0) 10 (0) 11 (1)
Orlando is by far the luckiest team with 3 first round picks since 1990 winning with the worst record, the 2nd worst record and the 11th worst record. The Celtics have never won the Lottery in spite of having the worst record back in 1997 when the team with the 3rd worst record beat us out and won it.
It seems that the best spot to be in is to have the 3rd worst record as the team with the 3rd worst record has won a whopping 6 times since 1985 and 4 times since the weighted lottery was instituted.
On the other hand, the team with the worst record has only won the lottery 3 times since 1985 and only twice in the weighted lottery.
So, those who are disheartened by the return of Pierce and the wins that may result, all is not lost. Having the most ping pong balls doesn't mean you will win the lottery. In fact, we should be working on a few wins to move into 3rd place.

Fiddlin' and Diddlin' on Tuesday
by FLCeltsFan 9:19 AM
February 6, 2007 Game day and I still get excited about the possibilities of every game. Celtics.com has the same starting lineup as last game with Scal at PF, West at the 2 and Rondo starting at PG but you never know with Doc what he will do. I love Rondo as the starting PG but I don't think Scal has enough of a post game to be the starting PF. MLive and Detroit Free Press both have articles stating that the Celtics could be dangerous in spite of their losing streak. The Celtics are hungry for a win and have almost won enough games that one of these days they are going to stop freezing up at the end and win one.
Much of the Celtics press centers on Gerald Green's selection for the Dunk Contest. The Herald and The Globe both have articles discussing his selection and his prospects of winning it. Tony Allen seems to be his biggest supporter and he feels that Green has a dunk up his sleeve that could be one of the top 10 dunks of all time. The Herald is even soliciting suggestions for Dunks from readers to drum up some excitement as the Celtics sure could use some. On NBA TV Daily, Frank Isola picked Nate Robinson to repeat as Dunk Champion but Rick Kamla is firmly in Green's corner.
In the Herald Notebook, Gomes voices his agreement with Pierce that the Celtics may want to trade their draft pick. I don't know about that. You just have to keep it if there is a chance at getting Oden or Durant.
The Green Room digs into their mailbag for some good rants on Doc, Danny, the Draft, and more. One writer calls Wally "Danny's Folly" and goes on to say that he is a liability when he is on the floor. Another long time fan is waiting by his radio for news of Doc's firing. I don't see it coming this season because I do believe that Danny is looking toward the Oden sweepstakes in the lottery. But if he isn't fired (or doesn't quit to save face) this summer I will be very surprised. And I heartily agree with the email asking why Powe isn't getting more playing time. This kid brings everything the team lacks - toughness, rebounding, energy, a post presence - and yet he sits on the bench. Doc talks about how hard he plays in practice and no one wants to go up against him...I imagine the other teams would feel the same if Doc would just play him.
The Patriot Ledger discusses Pierce's imminent return. He is traveling with the team to Detroit but not likely to play. Doc says that he is most likely to return on Friday. Also, after at first saying that Pierce would be limited to 10 minutes per game he now says that he doesn't know how many minutes Pierce will be able to play but is hoping for 20-25 minutes. Like Doc listens to doctors anyway. We all remember Doc playing Wally 35-40 minutes last season after he was told to limit him to under 30.
Full Court Press offers thoughts on Peter May's recent article on the Celtics. Can Danny gives us the 2007 GM Rankings. Memphis Commercial Appeal includes the Celtics in the latest trade rumors surrounding Gasol and says that Danny is offering both Jefferson and Green. I do hope Danny isn't that dumb. And finally, a Blog answers the question I am sure all of you have been wondering. Whatever happened to Kevin Pittsnogle?
The Celtics take on the Pistons tonight and in order to beat them, the Pistons will have to makes some mistakes and the Celtics will have to put together a complete game. But stranger things have happened in the NBA so I have hope!! If you can't watch the game (and even if you can and want to add some commentary) join us on Celtics Green for the play by play.

It's Official!! Green will Dunk!
Monday, February 5, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 3:12 PM
February 5, 2007
The field for this year's Dunk contest was just announced and as expected, Gerald Green has been asked to participate. His competition will include last year's champion Nate Robinson, and two other first time entrants, Orlando's Dwight Howard and Chicago's Tyrus Thomas.
The judges of this year’s Sprite Slam Dunk competition will include Michael Jordan,Dominique Wilkins, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter and Julius “Dr. J” Erving.
There are two rule changes for this year’s competition: Upon receiving the ball from the referee, players will have a two-minute time limit to complete their dunk. If a player hasn’t completed a dunk when the two-minute clock expires, he will have two more attempts to do so. Also new this year is the use of television instant replay, at the discretion of the referee, for clarification of rules compliance. I think they should call this the Nate Robinson Rule since I am sure that his gazillion attempts to complete his dunk last year led the league to add the new rule.
To whet your appetite for Gerald's performance, Draft Express has a recap of the McDonald's dunk contest, which Green won. Celtics.com has a Gallery of Green's dunks.
You can also see some of Gerald's dunks on YouTube. His Dunk against the Raptors

Fiddlin' and Diddlin' on a Monday
by FLCeltsFan 9:25 AM
February 5, 2007 For those of you who don't recognize the title of this post, it is something that the legendary Johnny Most would say when a player was just dribbling around. He would get frustrated when players would just be fiddlin' and diddlin' around instead of passing the ball and setting up the open man. I thought it would be a good title for a post that touches on all the articles around the web today.
Paul Pierce is front and center in the articles out today as one would expect with his return to practice and his hopeful return to action some time this week. But the Herald has a bit of a different article on him. In Bulpett's article, Pierce offers his opinion on our pick in the upcoming draft. Pierce would rather trade it for some veteran help now than to keep it and takes a chance on getting a top pick in the draft. He may have a point, but Oden or Durant, or even Noah, would look good in a Celtics uniform.
In the Herald Notebook and also in the Globe Notebook, they discuss Pierce's return. Both articles talk about Pierce's return to practice, as well as his probable return on Friday against the Nets. He isn't expected to accompany the team to Detroit and since he hasn't practiced full court yet, his return against the Heat on Wednesday isn't probable. Wally was back at practice after missing a day with the stomach flu and Al showed no ill effects from a thumb sprain. Green still isn't commenting on the dunk contest but sources say he will be chosen. The official announcement comes today. Also reported to be in the contest is Dwight Howard. The Globe Blog discusses Gomes' snub for the Sophomore team. While Doc insists he doesn't vote for players on bad teams, it seems unfair that Gomes didn't get a chance to play in this game as he clearly belongs. Also mentioned is Green's probable invite to the Dunk contest and the fact that Lucky and Courtney (Celtics' Dancer) will be representing the team there. Red's Army has a great article today that I heartily agree with. He mentions the fact that in all the years since the draft lottery was instituted, only 3 teams with the worst record have won the lottery. We have already lost enough and this team needs to win now to build their confidence before irreparable harm comes from having a losing attitude. We will not make the playoffs even if Pierce comes back and we start winning so we will still get a lottery pick. But winning will go a long way toward making this team more confident and a better team in the future.
In an article that goes right along with my article below, the Portsmouth Herald has a good article on JoJo White and the fact that he puts this season in perspective. JoJo was on that team that Powers discusses in his book. He feels that there are many reasons to be encouraged by this team and I agree.
The Cheap Seats on Celtics Blog reports that Big Al is one of the league's best kept secrets. Al is growing into a player before our eyes this season. He is now averaging a double double (14.1 PPG and 10.50 RPG) . This is significant. And, he still has room for improvement and is improving game by game. When Pierce comes back, he will be even better because he won't face as many triple teams as he has in the Captain's absence. There really are reasons to be excited about this team but the losing has overshadowed them all. I am hoping that will change soon.

Quotes from the Past Can Bring Hope
Sunday, February 4, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:38 PM
February 5, 2007 Is youth the problem on this team? Are the problems we are having unique to this Celtics team? Here are some quotes that could have come from the Herald or the Globe following any of our recent losses...
"We played a strong first half again,' he (the coach) said, "And then we folded our tents again. We missed key baskets. We never made an important shot. When we get everyone involved, we play well. When we don't... I'm not very happy with this."
How do you explain a ... basketball team, that shoots 73 percent in the first half and leads by 13 points - and scores 37 points the rest of the night? How do you explain twenty-nine turnovers and only three offensive rebounds in one evening and just one basket in seven minutes during the final quarter? How do you explain a 108-101 loss to a (team) who had three starters hurt and a reserve guard missing?
And then they come out for the third quarter and it all vanishes in a vapor trail. Balls are thrown out of bounds. The rebounding dries up. The 24-second clock ticks down to the dregs and (one of the players) is still pounding the ball at the top of the key, waiting for somebody - anybody - to move. Three minutes pass without a basket. Seven minutes. And an 81-73 lead becomes a 90-84 hole.
But they just aren't doing it. We have people who are not contributing consistently. Oh, a game here and there they'll do it, but there is not the dedication to concentration that you have to have. There are not a lot of things. There has not been a willingness to work hard for 48 minutes. There are not enough people who want to do the uncomfortable little things that win games - like banging the boards, moving without the ball, playing knuckles down defense. But these quotes aren't talking about this team. They are about a Celtics team, however. These quotes were taken from The Short Season by John Powers and describe the 1977-1978 Celtics team coached by Tommy Heinsohn.
This team wasn't a young team but had 7 All Stars on it including Dave Cowens, Jo Jo White, John Havlicek, Dave Bing, Sidney Wicks, Cedric Maxwell, Don Cheney, and others. They were coached by a Hall of Fame Coach who had won 2 titles with the Celtics as a coach, one the previous year. Many of these players had been on the championship team the year before and yet, this team won only 32 games and missed the playoffs. When the team's record was 11 and 23, Tommy Heinsohn was replaced as coach by Satch Sanders. So, it isn't just youth that can make a team underachieve. Even with a Hall of Fame coach and a veteran team, they can face the same problems.
This team also had injuries to key players. After the coach was replaced they only won 21 more the rest of the season. The following year didn't improve much either in spite of another coaching change and an ownership change. In fact, they lost even more, finishing with only 29 wins. At the end of that season, they replaced the coach again and a rookie by the name of Larry Bird joined the team and they went from last place to first place the next year. Just one player and a new coach turned things around for a last place team.
I guess I am relaying this because it should give us hope. As I was reading this book, I was struck by the quotes about this veteran team that could describe our young team today. A coaching change and a dominant young player in the draft changed the fortunes of that 29 win team. A team that was full of All Stars and veterans had many of the same problems that our young team is having today. A strong half followed by a let down. Too many turnovers. Dry spells offensively. For our team it has been injuries that affected the chemistry of the team and the inexperience of those left that have led to a long losing streak. The addition of just one player could change the fortunes of this team. They have potential but just haven't put it together. It could be Pierce coming back. It could be a healthy Tony Allen next season. It could be Oden or Durant or Noah or even a veteran that we trade for. It could just be a coaching change that does it. With the addition of one player and a new coach the sky could be the limit for this team.
