Celtics Drop 10th in a Row to Toronto
Friday, January 26, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:34 PM
January 26, 2007 Stop me if you have heard this before. Celtics play hard and stage a comeback only to lose a close game in the end. Seems like that is the description of every game lately. Other than Turnovers, the Celtics seemed to out play the Raptors. Celtics shot 48% to 41% for the Raptors. Celtics out rebounded the Raptors 41-36. But the Celtics turned the ball over 20 times to only 10 for the Raptors. But we went 7 minutes in the 4th quarter without making any shots and that sealed the loss. The Raptors had a great passing game and had 27 assists on 31 field goals. I would love for the Celtics to get to that level.
Al played in spite of rolling his ankle in the last game and did very well although at one point he did ask to come out as Doc, in typical fashion, was over playing him. He once again had a double double and finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 block. He is learning how to pass out of the double teams and that is a good sign for the future when Pierce and Wally come back. Perk was obviously hurting again tonight because he wasn't moving very well and finished with 2 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. He had some great passes that led to baskets tonight.
Gomes was 4-7 and finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Scal played 20 minutes and finished with 0 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. He did play Bosh pretty well. Kandi played 3 minutes and had 0 points and 1 rebound. Powe's minutes are dwindling with the return of Scal but he is still making the most of his minutes finishing with 1 point and 2 rebounds in 3 minutes. He plays hard. He plays well. And yet, he gets no playing time. I still don't get it.
West played the bulk of the minutes at point guard tonight and finished with 15 points on 6-14 shooting along with 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Rondo played 12 minutes and was 4-7 from the field for 8 points with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Telfair played only 5 minutes and had 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Allen Ray came off the bench and kept the Celtics in the game early shooting 6-12 (3-4 from beyond the arc) with 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Green was playing on his 21st birthday. His shot was once again off and he shot 5-16 for 12 points with 3 rebounds and 1 assist.
I don't know how much stock you can put into this but I found this on one of the Raptors' boards: My insider said that most of the Celtics were up late last night partying their brains out. Much alcohol was consumed. This game is as much of a lock for the Raptors as any game this season. If this is true, I am very much disappointed. For one thing, I expect much better from this group of kids. They all seem to have good character and it would seem out of character for them. But with Green celebrating his 21st birthday, it may have a ring of truth to it. As young as these kids are, if Doc doesn't have more control of them on the road than to let them out drinking the night before a game, there is something very, very wrong. Let's just hope that it was a rumor and no substance to it.
Our next game is against another All Star as Gilbert Arenas comes to town on Sunday. We gave them as much as they could handle the last game. Let's just hope they play well. We need to learn to play more as a team and not just play well as individuals. That is when we will learn to win.

Still Rumblings about Gasol
by FLCeltsFan 10:27 PM
January 26, 2007 From Marc Stein's column today:
As for Pau's future, Boston is the team I'm hearing strongest besides Chicago, whose interest in Gasol and long list of assets are well-chronicled. The Celts, though, also have a longstanding interest in the Spaniard and can package an inexpensive young player or two with future first-round picks in an offer that would also feature ailing center Theo Ratliff, whose contract expires next season while insurance pays most of this season's tab.
The issue for the Celts is whether to pursue Gasol between now and the Feb. 22 trading deadline or focus on their Paul Pierce-less plummet into Greg Oden-Kevin Durant lottery territory. Danny isn't saying anything about a Gasol trade and that makes me think that he is truly interested and trying to work out a trade. I never really thought Iverson would come here because Danny was talking about it too much. Every year Danny makes a trade and he never shows his hand ahead of time. Stein is hearing strong rumblings about Boston. Danny isn't saying anything. There may be something to this.

Gaston Selling 1984 Championship Ring

Some Random Thoughts
by FLCeltsFan 9:59 AM
January 26, 2007 Today I am thinking about Al Jefferson and the bad rap he got last season as a malingerer and people were labeling him as a bust and he really took a lot for not healing and not playing well after the ankle injury. Then he had surgery and healed quite quickly and even played just 2 weeks after an emergency appendectomy. Finally healthy, he is playing very well and everyone is singing his praises. Today's Globe article by Shira mentions that Al had minor surgery to remove discomfort from a tendon. I would expect this kind of misinformation from Peter may but am surprised to see it from Shira. I am amazed that they are still trying to gloss it over. Al had bone chips removed from his ankle. It wasn't exploratory and it wasn't just minor tendon discomfort. There was a definite problem and when they finally fixed it, he healed quickly and proved that he wasn't just milking the sprains. Reporting otherwise is a big disservice to Al.
This season it is Perk who has been injured and is getting the "bust" label by a lot of fans. How soon we forget the way he played just before the shoulder injury last season. He got all of 19 minutes playing time his entire first season. He played in only 60 games and averaged only 9 minutes per game in those. His third season, he didn't get much playing time until Blount was traded and then averaged only 19 minutes per game. When he finally did did get playing time, he was producing and looked good and then he injured the shoulder. Over the summer he had the shoulder surgery and so didn't get to work out over the summer and was working on getting his conditioning back coming into training camp. He then had the plantar fasciitis hit. Many players have been plagued with this. Tim Duncan had it and wasn't able to play well at all and they shut him down because of it and he missed close to 30 games. Perk missed 10 and has been trying to play through it. Because of the pain in his foot, he hasn't been able to move well or to get any lift. In the first half against the Hawks, he felt good and his foot for at least a half wasn't hurting and he produced big time on both ends of the court. Then the pain hit again in the third period. Yes it is his 4th season but he had very little playing time his first 2 1/2 seasons. If we are labeling a player out of high school a bust because he isn't producing more by his 4th season, then Jermaine O'Neal has to be a bust as well. It wasn't until his 5th season that we saw any real production from him, and he didn't have the injuries that Perk has had to deal with. Give Perk a chance. He will be a double double guy when he is healthy and gets the playing time.
I just don't understand the lack of playing time for Powe. This kid does good things whenever he is on the court. He rebounds, plays defense, gives us a post presence and some toughness. But yet, even with the injuries to our bigs, hasn't gotten playing time. I really, really don't understand. Now with Scal coming back tonight, he will probably lose even the 5-6 minutes he has been getting. We are a better team when Powe is on the floor because of his defensive intensity and he needs to be playing.
Do we want to win now or do we want to get a high draft pick? This is the dilemma that most Celtics fans face and are torn between. It is hard for me not to want the Celtics to win and so I pull for them every game to win. I can't get down on the team for losing though because they are playing hard against some pretty steep odds. Every time there is another injury the team loses a bit of chemistry that they have built and have to reacclimate to the new lineups and new plays that have to be reworked due to the missing players. We are seeing improvement in individual players. Rondo, West, Jefferson, Gomes, Green all are showing improvement and I think that if we can get over the hump, this team is going to come together and be a contender, whether or not we get Oden or Durant. However having a high draft pick would definitely add to this team a great deal. I think we will be fine if Pierce comes back and we start winning, but we will be even better if he doesn't. Either way, I still love this team and will root for them every game. I am not ready to give up on our young players as yet.
Rondo is our PG of the future. I can't get over how good this kid is really going to be. He is just lacking a consistent jumper to become a top PG in this league. His defense, court sense, basketball IQ and overall ability are very exciting. He also has the work ethic that will get him to the next level. Reports are that he spends hours before and after practice and before games just working on his jumper. It will come and with it, our debate about the PG spot will stop.
Tonight's game may be ugly if Al can't play well tonight. We need him to be 100% against Bosh, who will be buoyed by his spot on the All Star Team. Of course, Doc could play Powe to give Al a break, but he probably won't. Doc will play Scal who can't do near what Powe does in there. Also, the Raptors will reach .500 with a win tonight and you know that will be an incentive to play hard. We will need to play both halves tonight or our losing streak will reach 10. Which would please the half of the fans who are cheering for Oden but will disappoint those of us who are still cheering for a win. I know that our young players are trying hard for a win. I just can't see any of them tanking. They are going to work hard and it will come together one of these days when we can get some relief from the injuries so that players can get some consistency in their roles. Of course, a new coach would help also.

Some Good News and Bad News
Thursday, January 25, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 4:25 PM
January 25, 2007 First the Good News... Al Jefferson is ok. He left the game last night with 10:32 left in the 4th quarter with a sprained ankle after coming down on someone's foot. He also went down hard at the end of the second quarter with what was called a knee bruise but came back and played the entire 3rd quarter. Here is what Al had to say from Celtics.com
"It feels good. I'm expecting to play tomorrow. I wanted to come back last night," said Jefferson. "I must have stepped on somebody's foot. I tweaked it earlier in the game and it wasn't as bad, but it happened again. It was a little sore last night, and it's a little sore right now, but it's pain that I've played through before," said Jefferson. "I've iced it and I've just got to get it ready for tomorrow." For the record, Al wanted to come back into the game last night but was stopped by the doctors who said no.
The Herald also reports that Scal is also planning to play tomorrow night. Pierce was seen at the practice facility without the boot and shooting threes and doing some trash talking with the equipment.
Now for the bad news. Wally has seemed to suffer a set back from practicing on Tuesday and isn't expected to accompany the team on the trip to Toronto.

Celtics Blow Lead and Lose 9th in a Row
Wednesday, January 24, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:15 PM
January 24, 2007 The Celtics appeared to have the game well in hand, leading by as much as 18 points in the first half. They played together and looked really good. Then they came out completely flat in the second half. The Hawks went to a zone defense in the second half and it completely took us out of our game. And it gets worse. Al went down hard in the second quarter and was slow to get up and limped off the court. He came back and they said it was just a light knee bruise. Then, in the third quarter, he came down on someone's foot and sprained his ankle and didn't return to the game. Hopefully it is a minor sprain and won't lead to more problems like he had last season. Perk played an inspired game but told Doc in the third quarter that his foot was hurting pretty bad.
Perk was the player of the game in my opinion and finished the game with 15 points on 6-9 shooting to go with 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. He was moving better than he has since he went down with the plantar fasciitis and looked like the Perk of old, but he did tell Doc his foot was hurting in the 3rd period. Al shot 4-9 and finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks in spite of going out with a sprained ankle. Other than Al, Powe and Perk, the shooting was terrible.
West scored 18 points but shot only 4-16 and finished with 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal. Green shot 4-16 and 3-9 from beyond the arc but had 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Gomes shot 1-11 and seemed to be off all game. He did get 7 rebounds and 2 assists to go with his 4 points.
Rondo was 1-4 and finished with 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Telfair played 11 minutes and was 2-4 from the field for 5 points. Allen Ray was 0-9 from the field and finished with only 1 point. Another bright spot as always was the play of Leon Powe, who won the Tommy Award (although I think Perk deserved it more). But Powe played only 10 minutes and played some great defense in the paint finishing with 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 5 rebounds (3 offensive) and 1 block. This guy just plays hard and makes the most of every minute on the court.
We played like a team in the first half and were getting the ball inside to Perk and Al and we built a big lead. Then the wheels came off and it seemed like we couldn't do anything. Whether it was the zone defense that the Hawks threw at us or the fact that we just stopped playing together or the fact that we went cold from the field, it was like we were a completely different team in the second half. This was probably the most disappointing loss yet as we didn't play well in the second half. It is easier to accept a loss when the team plays hard but when they don't play well in a game they should have won, that is disappointing.
After practicing on Tuesday and hoping to return against the Hawks, Wally was unable to play tonight. Dickerson said that he may have reinjured the ankle in practice as there was pain and swelling once again today in the ankle. Hopefully Al's ankle won't be serious and he will be able to play on Friday against the Raptors.

Gasol Mania
by FLCeltsFan 4:03 PM
January 24, 2007 Since Gasol has publicly asked for a trade, there is a lot of buzz around the NBA about it. I figured I would offer a few random thoughts about what is going around. The Bulls have offered a package that includes guard Ben Gordon, forward P.J. Brown and a first round draft pick in return for Gasol. Chris Sheridan says that this offer has a 4 out of 5 probablility.
We know that Danny had made an offer previously but we don't know who he offered. And has the player or players offered previously distinguished themselves to become a part of the core group since then? Chris Sheridan has this to say about the Celtics:
The Grizzlies already know the Celtics are interested, so now it's a question of whether West wants what Celtics exec Danny Ainge can offer. You can assume West would begin his wish list with Al Jefferson and Delonte West, but their salaries don't add up to anything close to the $10 million requisite, so the Celtics would have to add in Theo Ratliff, too, and he is still due to make $11.67 million in '07-'08. In other words, Memphis could probably do better elsewhere. He gives this trade a 2 on the probability scale. Personally, I don't see Danny moving Jefferson. I see him offering Gomes or even Green before he would Jefferson. I think Al is one of the few untouchables on the team now that he is finally breaking out.
Sheridan sees 9 teams who might make offers for Gasol and the Bulls offer is the only one that rates over a 2 on the probability scale in his view. PJ Brown, Gordon, and a first round pick doesn't seem to be that much better of a deal than what we could offer them. Right now, our pick is going to be higher than the Knicks or the Bulls picks. Gomes or Green with West is better than Gordon. And PJ Brown and Ratliff are a wash. So I don't see how he rates the Bulls offer so highly. I would rather get Gasol than to gamble on trying to get Oden. One is a proven commodity and the other is still potential. Besides, there is no guarantee that we would get the top pick and we would have to really tank to get one of the top 3 picks because I see improvement game by game in our young team and they are going to start winning.
But,as it was with Iverson, Danny may not offer enough to get their attention. He may just not offer enough. We do have a benefit in that we aren't in the same conference as Gasol. Teams don't like to trade within their conference. We also have those articles in the Spanish papers where Gasol's dad was saying how Gasol wants to be a Celtic and one even hinted that a trade for him was in the works. Seems like where there is smoke there must be some fire. Although it seems that most writers feel that the Bulls may have the inside track, we certainly can offer a better package than Gordon, Brown and a first round pick.

Wednesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:04 AM
January 24, 2007 Tonight we face the Hawks. Last game against them was a loss but of all the teams we face, this one should be a good chance at a win. Some good articles in the papers today and wothe the read.
Steve Bulpett begins with an article in The Herald that reports that the Celtics are losing games but not the fans. How can you not love a team that plays this hard and shows so much heart? They never give up. I would love to see what they could do with a competent coach.
The Celtics Notebook begins by telling us that Wally and Scal were back at practice and trying to acclimate themselves back into the team. It was good to read that Doc isn't going to put Wally back into the starting lineup. I think having him come off the bench is a good thing.
Shira's article in the Globe tells us that our small lineup with West, Rondo, Ray, Gomes and Al play with such energy and heart that they don't back down from anyone. This is the lineup that brought us back from big deficits in the last two games. Good things do indeed come in small packages.
The Globe Blog tells us that Rondo is learning. He spends a lot of time watching tape and analyzing his performances and what he needs to do to get better. He also spends hours after practice and before games on his shot. This kid is the real deal and is going to be an incredible talent in this league. Also in the Blog is a little piece telling us that Perk is still struggling with the plantar fasciitis. Some days he can barely walk. Why Doc doesn't play Powe more and give Perk a rest, I just don't understand.
Eric Weiss has a good article on Celtics Blog that explains why we build chemistry and how we avoid fostering an attitude of losing. He reports that Doc gives players minutes as they earn them. But that doesn't explain why Powe doesn't get more. The kid does good things everytime he gets on the floor. He is such a hard worker, I just don't see him not working hard in practice. It just baffles me that he doesn't play more.
USA Today has a piece that tells us that Green is improving but that he is still very inconsistent. He will have a good game and then follow that up with a bad one. As he gets more minutes he will continue to improve and gain the confidence that will make his bad games fewer and fewer. Hoopsworld takes a look at Pierce's injury. He is playing it safe by resting his foot. He sees a silver lining in that this rest may help to extend his career since he has been playing a lot of minutes over his career and hasn't missed a lot of games. One thing we know for sure is that the team is benefitting from his absence. We are seeing our young players develop and get more time and that will be good for the future of this team when he returns.
The Enterprise tells us that as the Celtics season continues to slide downhill, Jefferson is blossoming. He has become a genuine low post threat and is now developing a defensive game as well. I think back to last year when everyone was calling him a bust because he wasn't able to play well and because it took too long to come back from the sprained ankle that was actually bone chips. Now I hear the same thing about Perk who is struggling with an injury as well. When Perk has a chance to finally heal and is 100% I think we will see a huge improvement there as well.
Finally, I love this article in the Lowell Sun. We have been hearing a lot of Celtics fans hoping we continue to lose in order for a chance to get Greg Oden.
But don't believe the hype. What sort of logic is it to throw in the towel because you might -- flashback to the 1997 Draft and Tim Duncan -- have the chance at a potentially solid big man? The idea being that everyone should just forget about the fact that Paul Pierce and Wally Szczerbiak will be coming back at some point. Instead, just say the heck with it all. Let them sit the rest of the year. Don't really try to win. Tank the season. All this for a guy scoring 15 points per game in 12 games against college players. The same guy who got shut down in the Buckeyes biggest game so far (a 26-point loss to Florida), got hit with the injury bug in his freshman year, and who, at 7 feet tall and 280 pounds, might not even fit the up-tempo style of play the Celtics claim to want to play. Yes! Finally the voice of reason. The article goes on to remind us that those pointing to the difference Duncan has made should remember that Duncan was dominant in college in a tough conference and he joined a veteran team, not one filled with young potential. Nobody should be looking to the draft. The hope for the future is already in place. It starts and ends with the improvement of Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green and Rajon Rondo. These players are developing in front of our eyes. I would add Perk to that list too because he has the potential to be a very good center once he gets past the injuries, just as Jefferson finally started to dominate once he got past the injuries. I would also add Powe who is a player. This kid has the potential to dominate in the paint if Doc would just give him some playing time. With the Celtics slowly getting healthy and the Eastern conference being weak, I say we play to win. I don't think there is a player on the team that feels any differently. These kids play hard. It is going to all click one of these days and then look out!! And the winning may start tonight against the Hawks!

Scal and Wally Practice - West Sits Out - Casey Fired
Tuesday, January 23, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:47 PM
January 23, 2007 According to the Herald Insider and Celtics.com, Wally and Scal practiced today and should be available to play tomorrow. Apparently their sense of humor is still very much intact as well
Apparently, Wally Szczerbiak was too busy playing one on one against Brian Scalabrine to talk to reporters, so he addresses them from across the gym. "Day-to-day, re-evaluated tomorrow," yelled Szczerbiak, who was moving well as he drove to the basket. "Me too," added Brian Scalabrine, who was guarding Szczerbiak while wearing a knee brace. "Me too," chimed in Sebastian Telfair, who's presumably healthy but been relegated to minor minutes off the bench as of late as Rajon Rondo has taken his spot as the backup point guard. Doc said that if Wally plays he will be coming off the bench as his offense and will help to bolster our bench that could use some more offense.
West dressed for practice today but did not go through the main practice with soreness in his back once again. He is expected to play tomorrow, however.
In other news, Dwane Casey was fired by the Wolves today and replace with assistant Randy Wittman for the remainder of the season. Will Doc be next?

Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:46 AM
January 23, 2007 In spite of another loss last night Celtics fans have got to have some hope for the future. Big Al is proving that he is for real. He played Duncan fairly evenly last night other than one blunder in the end. West is showing leadership on the court and is hitting his shots again. Rondo is so incredibly exciting to watch. Gomes is playing very well at the 3. Things are starting to come together for this team. Now if they could just take it one step further and get past the miscues and learn how to win. You can find reports on last night's game in the Herald, the Globe, Worcester Telegram and Metro West Daily. The theme is always the same. The Celtics get down by 20+ points, play hard and don't give up, cut the lead to 2, come up short in the end.
Mark Murphy has a piece in the Herald that discusses Al's game defensively last night. In the past, the one knock against Al has been his defense. Last night, he played solid defense on Duncan and won some praise from the coach for doing so. It could give Al a boost of confidence going forward as well:
“It tells me that I really can play D,” Jefferson said of the message that came with those two blocks. “If I can get a blocked shot against Tim Duncan, then I feel that I can get one against anybody.”
The Herald Notebook reports on the injuries that are healing. Pierce is able to shed the boot and will have xrays today. Wally and Scal hope to practice today and possibly play tomorrow. Also reported is that Doc is glad he won't have to cheer against the Patriots in the Super Bowl as he is a big Bears fan. Rondo came under fire in a time out for walking the ball up the court and not getting into the offense quick enough. Last night I watched the Spurs pass the ball up court time after time and by doing so took less than 4 seconds off the shot clock to get into their offense. I know that we turn the ball over a lot on passes but if we could just learn to pass the ball up court instead of dribbling it up, we would be a much better team. Also mentioned is the fact that Perk is still playing in pain. It may be wise to just sit him and let it heal. Duncan had plantar fasciitis and they sat him and now he is back playing very effectively. Continuing to play on it may cause permanent damage. Sit down Big Guy, we need you healthy.
Both the Globe and the Worcester Telegram report on old friends of the Celtics. The Globe has a piece on Bowen and his iron man streak of consecutive games played. The Worcester Telegram reports on Eric Williams and how happy he is to be on a winning team with a chance at the championship.
The Green Room takes a look at a few of the players and gives some thoughts on the team. He discusses Green, Rondo, Al, Gomes, and Telfair and admits that Celtics are fun to watch again, knowing that our young players are getting experience for the future. And he discusses the debate over Oden or Durant and hopefully the Celtics will be in position to pick one or the other.
The Globe Blog reports that Delonte is becoming the vocal leader on the court. We all know how Delonte loves to talk. Put a microphone in front of him and no one knows what is going to come out but on the court, he didn't assert himself until recently.
Celtics.com has an article that voices what we have all been seeing in games. This team just doesn't quit. They play with heart and just keep pushing. They gained some praise from the opposing coach as well:
"Their energy and their youth and aggressiveness I thought was a real credit to what they're trying to do and the circumstances they've been in with all the injuries and losses," said Popovich. "My hat goes off to them. I thought that was a great show of the character they have to hang in that game." This team is hungry and are going to fight their way into every game. It is just a matter of time until they figure out how to win those games instead of just being in them.
Full Court Press gives reasons for just playing the kids. They give the season's goals this way: What the Celtics need to do this season is play the young players who are healthy and develop them as much as they can. They also need to make some decisions on which of these players are keepers for the future, and which ones they might want to use in a trade for better fitting pieces going forward. They then list the players they want to see more of on the court for the rest of the season. Gerald Green (We need him really get the minutes to develop his game and get him ready for the role that he seems headed for…the scoring sidekick to Paul Pierce and possible future All Star in his own right.), Rajon Rondo (He can score. Not shoot, score. His game is electric and something always seems to be happening on the court when he’s out there. Give him the minutes, Doc. Let him learn to run the team at an NBA level.), Leon Powe (When Powe is on the floor, the Celtics have a presence in the paint. He throws his body around. He grabs rebounds and comes down with his elbows out. He can take on much bigger players and score. Let’s see as much of him as we can.), Allen Ray (It’s worth seeing what his ceiling is.), and Al Jefferson (Like Green, we need to take advantage of the time to really develop Jefferson for his role going forward. He too could be a huge piece of the puzzle for a rebuilt Celtics team.) I agree with this assessment. It seems as though Doc is giving everyone a chance except Powe and I just don't understand it. The kid does great things when on the floor, he gives us defense, rebounding and a post presence, all of which we need, and yet he doesn't get into the game.
Delonte.com is liking what they see from Delonte these days. He was the game's high scorer and is playing with heart and is becoming a vocal leader. What is there not to like? And speaking of Delonte, JB over on CelticsStuffLive has a good piece on how the light seemed to come on in Delonte last night as he scored 14 of his 27 points in the 4th quarter with Rondo running the team. I agree with JB and hope Delonte is a part of the Celtics for a long time.
The Day has a good article on Donny Marshall. Interesting to read that he may be in line to take over when Tommy retires. Last night I was thinking how much I love Tommy. He was so excited when the kids started coming back in the 4th. He loves this team so much and I just love hearing that enthusiasm. I don't know as anyone will ever be able to replace Tommy.

Celtics Fight to the End but Come Up Short ... Again
Monday, January 22, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:32 PM
January 23, 2007
This team is so much fun to watch. They never give up and even when they are down by 23, you keep waiting for them to come back, which they do. There was no logical reason for them to be within 4 points of the San Antonio Spurs at the end of the game. They play with such heart and remind me of the little train who could, which has always been one of my favorite books. In spite of the losses, there is so much to be excited about with this team. They play with heart and several players are stepping up. There were a couple of bad calls (or non calls) that helped the Spurs to win. Tony Parker tripped over Al's feet when Al was heading in the other direction and they called a foul on Al. Then, the refs let 5 seconds tick off the clock while Gomes was trying to foul Findley at the end of the game and they didn't call the foul until 3 seconds were left on the clock. These were two very obvious cases where the refs affected the end of the game. I hate when they do that.
Al once again had a tremendous game. He played Duncan pretty evenly the entire game. He finished with 26 points on 11-20 shooting to go with 14 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Al is finally becoming the player we all hoped for when he was drafted. Perk is very obviously hurting. He told Dickerson that his pain is at a level of about 6 right now. But I have to give it to the big guy because he was hustling up and down the court in spite of the pain. He finished with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in 23 minutes. Powe got into the game for only 2 minutes. I really would like to see him get more playing time.
Gomes had another very solid night with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 1 steal. Green struggled shooting 1-7 for 2 points with 3 fouls. He seems to be forcing things and plays so much better when he lets the game come to him. He will be ok, he just has to get his confidence back and quit trying to push so hard. Once again, Allen Ray got more minutes with Green's struggles and scored 6 points on 2 3's and pulled down 3 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.
West started at Point guard and was the game high scorer with 27 points on 11-17 shooting with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. He hustled all over the court and was a big reason that this team came back from the 23 point deficit. Rondo got the bulk of back up minutes and often was on the court with West moving to the 2 guard. Rondo finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Doc called him out during one time out for walking the ball up the court but he played hard and disrupted the Spurs offense time after time. Telfair played only 4 minutes and had just 1 rebound in that time.
I see progress in every game in spite of the losses mounting. In this game, we turned the ball over 12 times through 3 quarters but just once in the 4th and finished with only 13 for the game, which is a huge improvement. The Spurs had 18 for the game, 5 on steals by Delonte and Rondo. In spite of facing the daunting Spurs front line, points in the paint were even, mostly due to Al's work in the paint. Doc still does things that make me scratch my head at times. Like when he put a lineup of Telfair, West, Rondo, Allen and Gomes on the floor for awhile against the Spurs with a much bigger unit including Duncan in the game. I also question his not giving Powe any minutes. But I think Doc needs to remain the coach for this team for now as the young players obviously like him and changing coaches now would be hard for them mid year. But I am still hoping that we have a new coach next season. There are bright spots in every game and we see players improving game by game. When they put it all together and finally figure out how to win, this team is going to be very fun to watch and scary for other teams to face.

Monday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:19 AM
January 22, 2007 Tonight we face the Spurs and since we haven't beaten them in the last 17 games even at full force, most expect us to lose again tonight. Call me an optimist, but now is the time when we may be able to pull out a win. Our kiddie corps have been playing well and have stayed in games against tough competition only to come up short. Most of our losses were the result of miscues on our part and failure to execute down the stretch. We have to be learning from our mistakes and one of these days correct these mistakes. Spurs are coming in tired from a road trip and playing back to back games and we can use our young legs and enthusiasm to run them and wear them out. Spurs have got to be pretty confident that they can pull this one out with their eyes closed. We are a young and depleted team. But that is when we can surprise them and pull out a win. I haven't seen anything definite yet, but Wally may possibly be back and a healthy Wally could give us a boost. I am not going to throw the towel in before the game starts. In the meantime, here is what is going on in the Celtics Nation today:
In the Herald, Bulpett tells us that Bassy is blaming himself for his demotion. Once the starter, Telfair has now been relegated to 3rd PG and 6-7 minutes a game. He is determined to get his spot back and so the competition among the PGs can only be good for the team. My thoughts are that West should start at the 2 alongside either Telfair or Rondo and bring Wally off the bench. That way we give West the minutes he deserves and play to his strengths as a shooting guard and we give both of our young PGs minutes. Also discussed is the long span in which we haven't beaten the Spurs. Players realize that it will take a virtually mistake free game in order to win this time.
The Globe Notebook discusses Ryan Gomes' role on the team. His ability to play both the 3 and the 4 gives us versatility. Add that to Al's ability to play the 4 or the 5 and West's ability to move between the 1 and the 2 and we have great versatility in our lineups. Danny certainly hit a home run when he picked Gomes at #50. May also discusses Rondo's move ahead of Telfair and Bruce Bowen.
Southcoast Today discusses Pierce's absence and what may happen when he returns. His absence has been a good thing for the team as the young players have had a chance to get experience and gain confidence. When Pierce returns, we have to hope that they will still play agressively looking for their own games rather than deferring to Pierce. He also discusses the fact that Gasol is available and that Memphis is looking for offers. The Memphis Commercial Appeal also discusses Gasol. It seems from the media reports that Chicago is the front runner. We know that Danny has made offers and so we will see what he is willing to give up to get him. The question is, will we have to give up too much and saddle us with 3 max contracts.
Carnival of the NBA #40 is up at Detroit Bad Boys and includes a lot of good articles including one from Loy's Place. Give it a look.
Join us tonight at Celtics Green for the play by play. Who knows, we may see a miracle and the Celtics may just rise up and pull out a win.
