Many Bright Spots in Celtics 81-73 Loss to the Pistons
Saturday, January 13, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:15 PM
January 13, 2007 The Celtics came into Detroit as the heavy underdogs. They have just 9 players available. Their starting unit averages 22 years of age and includes 4 players straight out of high school. They were playing a much more experienced team that is expected to challenge for the title this season. Most expected the Celtics to be blown out, but they played hard and kept the game much closer than the final score indicates. The final score was Pistons 81 and Celtics 73, but the Celtics kept it close throughout the game. The score was 72-70 with just under 3 minutes to play in the 4th. Flip Murray hit 2 3's from the top of the arc and that was pretty much the difference in the game.
This was a game that was fun to watch and there were many positives to bring away from it, in spite of ending up with another loss. Topping the individual performances is Al Jefferson's 12 point, 2 block, and career high 22 rebound performance. Al did a great job of getting position under the basket for rebounds. He had problems getting his shot off at times but still ended up with a double double. Perk finished with 2 points on a jumper from the top of the key as the shot clock went off to go with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Perk and Al are playing well together and are building better chemistry with each game.
Gomes played 47 minutes and had a very solid game finishing with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Kandi finished with 1 point and 3 rebounds but played some solid defense. My one disappointment was that Powe once again got limited minutes and finished with 2 points, 2 rebounds and 1 block in 14 minutes.
Telfair played 30 minutes and finished with 9 points, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Rondo again had a very impressive game with 4 points, 3 assists, 5 rebounds and 1 steal in 17 minutes. Ray only played 8 minutes and finished with 2 points, 1 assist and 1 rebound.
Gerald Green seemed to find his confidence and played a solid game. He finished with 24 points on 10-20 shooting a to go with 1 rebound and 1 block. He was called for a flagrant foul on Tayshun Prince in the 4th period, but looking at the replay shows that he had mostly ball on the block and Prince just lost his footing. Prince even went over to Green afterward and told him he knew it wasn't a flagrant foul. To Gerald's credit, he didn't let it shake him and he continued to keep his composure afterward.
It was a very encouraging game in that we were very short handed against one of the better veteran teams in the league and we gave them all they could handle. The play of the rookies and young players bodes well for the team when we get back to full strength. As Donny Marshall said at one point, Gerald Green improves with every play. They are playing team ball and we can see improvement in them game by game. We may not be winning games, but we are gaining valuable experience for our young players that will make us a much better team in the future.

Tony Allen has Successful Surgery
by FLCeltsFan 3:53 PM
January 13, 2007
According to a press release on RealGM, Tony had successful surgery on his injured knee today.
The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Tony Allen had successful anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery along with cartilage repair to his left knee. The surgery was performed this morning at New England Baptist Hospital by Celtics Team Physician, Dr. Brian McKeon and assisted by Dr. Paul Weitzel. Allen is out indefinitely with no timetable set for his return. Now comes the tough road back through rehab. I know Powe will be an inspiration for him, having fought back through 2 ACL tears and rehabs. We all wish Tony a quick recovery and hope to see him in training camp next season.

Celtics Fight Hard but Come Up Short Against Raptors 95-86
Friday, January 12, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:40 PM
January 12, 2007 The Celtics never gave up tonight and played with heart even though they were playing very short handed. I can see the young players growing game by game. Tonight's bright spots were Rajon Rondo and Leon Powe. I find it very hard to believe that Doc keeps these two kids on the bench until he has no choice but to play them.
Rondo finished the game with 23 points on 7-13 shooting to go with 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and only 1 turnover in 30 minutes of play. Rondo is our best point guard. For a kid who can't shoot, he scored at will tonight on a variety of drives and jumpers. The kid is an incredible talent and when Doc lets him play, he produces. Telfair had a good game as well with 14 points and 4 assist but he turned the ball over 4 times.
Powe was the other bright spot. He still only played 16 minutes but had 12 rebounds to go with 3 points and 3 steals. How Doc can not play him more is a real puzzle. He does good things whenever he is on the court and should be getting more playing time. Kandi played 19 minutes and finished with 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Perk also played limited minutes and finished with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. He still seems to be struggling somewhat. Al had only 9 points and 6 rebounds and struggled all night against double teams. Gomes played the most of any of the bigs and finished with 8 points 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Powe had the fewest minutes of any of the bigs and yet he out produced them all.
Allen Ray played 26 minutes and finished with 11 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Green struggled with his shot early but started to heat up toward the end of the game. He had 13 points on 4-14 shooting to go with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
I was very proud of this team as they played hard and never gave up. They came up short but we are seeing progress in individual players and they are pulling together as a team in spite of being very short handed. It won't get any easier as we face Detroit on the road tomorrow night. Detroit lost to Atlanta tonight so maybe there is a chance for us against them too. Powe and Rondo are earning playing time and hopefully Doc will continue to play them because good things happen when they are on the floor.

Friday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 11:40 AM
January 12, 2007 Not much news today. Seems like the injury to Tony has just sucked the wind out of the entire Celtics Nation. At this point, the team can either pull together or they can fall apart. I expect each of the kids to step up their games and for this team to compete. Perk, Green, Al, Rondo, Powe, Gomes, all of them are capable of stepping up their games. They will be getting the minutes now and Doc needs to let them play. Most of the articles center on the loss of Tony for the rest of the year.
Mark Murphy reports that the Celtics are weighing their options now that their injured list is growing. They have to try to weather the storm until some of the players can return. The next time Tony takes the court will be next season and that seems to have deflated this team more than the loss of Pierce, Wally, or any of the other players has done.
The Globe offers some Raptors thumbnails for tonight's game. It is going to be a challenge. All we can hope for is that they will all play hard and play together.
Shira's Notebook gives the official word that Tony will be out for the rest of the year and will undergo surgery as soon as the swelling goes down. Scal will be evaluated in another week. I love this quote from Tony when his mom was asking for an ambulance.
His mom was concerned about my driving," said Scalabrine. "She was asking for the ambulance. Tony was like, 'No, man, this is better than the ambulance.' It's Scal." Celtics.com reports that Doc filled in as the tenth man at practice so that they could run through their plays. Maybe the coaches can take turns filling in. No wonder Doc is talking about slowing things down since he has to run through them in practice.
The Patriot Ledger has yet another article discussing the injury to Tony and the fact that we are playing with just 9 players now. It has been a very tough season for us, but we will be a better team for it in the future. Doc has been on the fence, trying to win now when he should have been developing players. Now he has no choice.
The Toronto Star mentions that junk dunks can be costly. Michael Redd went down going in for a showboat dunk that wasn't necessary just as Tony did. Let's just hope that Gerald doesn't suffer the same fate since he seems to do at least a couple of sensational dunks a game. Makes you want to tell the team to settle for layups and jumpers.
The Orlando Sentinel has a good piece on Stars that have reigned supreme in the NBA. The list includes Bill Russell and Larry Bird. When you think of it, both were very unlikely stars and both dominated the sport. Oh for the good old days.
We face the Raptors tonight in a division rivalry. Raptors need the win tonight to stay on top of the division as the Nets are breathing down their necks. They will be motivated. Let's hope the Celtics find simlar motivation and win this one for Tony. Join us on Celtics Green tonight for the Play by Play.

Our Game Plan Now
by FLCeltsFan 11:17 AM
January 12, 2007 Derrenmatts over on Celtics Green came up with a good piece on what we should do as a game plan now that we have been decimated with injuries. Here is Derren's Plan:
First of all, maybe its time to scour the D-League to find suitable bodies to fill in while guys like Wally, Pierce and Delonte are out. We can't have Doc filling in at SF for us in practices because he may get the idea of becoming a player-coach
Now that we've lost our main offensive weapon (and that's what Tony has emerged into), we'll need to rely a lot more on smart ball movement and players moving without the ball. This was actually our game plan to start the season, but we always had the option of giving it to Pierce or Wally(and recently Tony) and have them put up points when we needed it. This is not an option now.
Game Plan #1: Use pick and rolls We started using the pick and roll more in the last game (vs. the Pacers), but not nearly as much as we'll need to now. Telfair and Rajon were given a fighting chance to run the team against the Pacers, and running picks for them gave them the opportunity to make plays happen. Even if it didn't lead directly to a bucket, it help open up the floor for other passes that led to scores. We have 4 big bodies who can set solid picks for Telfair and Rajon (Perkins, Jefferson, Gomes and Powe), and we need to use them for this purpose.
Game Plan #2: Establish Jefferson in the post early Its important to get Jefferson going early. Even if teams double and triple team him, he still needs to get touches in the post early. He'll have to kick it out and re-post, but that's alright (as long as he isn't throwing passes away). If we don't go to Jefferson early, he struggles to find his rhythm and the flow of the game. That just means he'll have to find his rhythm later in the game, and by that time, the game may be well out of hand and he's most likely going to force shots to quickly find his rhythm. And its important that Jefferson gets good positioning in the post--not so far away from the basket. He's much more effective when he's within 10 feet.
Game Plan #3: PG's must be aggressive Both Telfair and Rajon must aggressively look for their own shots. Right now, finding consistent offense from our team is not going to be easy. By playing aggressively, they'll help keep defenses honest and also create scoring opportunities for the team. If they are always passing up the ball, it'll put pressure on the other guys who don't have court vision to keep the ball moving, and that slows down the offense and forces us to take bad shots to beat the shot clock. Telfair is most likely going to be the starter and I want him to take those jumpers that the defenses give him. Once he starts knocking them down, defenses will play him tighter, and that will make the pick and roll more effective. When Rajon comes in, he needs to use his slashing and penetrating ability to carve apart defenses. He's one of the best at getting to the basket and positive things happen when he attacks. We need this spark from him off the bench.
Game Plan #4: Gerald and Ray need to shoot the ball off of curls: Gerald is going to get 30+ minutes per game now that Tony, Pierce and Wally are out. Doc has no one else to hide him behind. And I'm hoping Allan Ray will be given a fair amount of playing time too. I see a solid role player in Ray, possibly slipping into a backup SG/PG role in the future. I even think he can slide past Delonte in a little while (of course, Doc loves Delonte, so it may never happen). Doc needs to use both Gerald and Allan Ray off of curls to free them up for clean looks at the bucket. Gerald is a talented scorer and in the near future, he's going to be able to create his own shots. But for now, he's still learning the flow of the game and he doesn't quite understand when to attack, when to shoot, and when to pass. So to help him out (since he'll be the prime perimeter target), Doc needs to run plays for him off of curls. Same for Ray; he's got a sweet stroke and when he's got a split second to square up his shoulders, he'll knock down shots. But Doc has got to run plays for them and not just send them out there to figure things out for themselves. They are not experienced enough for that.
Game Plan #5: Run, run, run!!! We can't go toe to toe with teams with our halfcourt attack. We are too young and too inexperienced to execute our halfcourt offense to perfection most times down court. In order to remain competitive during these trying times, we need to get out and run as much as possible. Push the tempo and always look to advance the ball with passes. This is even more reason to play Allan Ray more because he gives us another quick ball handler who can make passes up the floor, or push the tempo himself.
Also to be included in the list is to give Leon Powe more playing time, and give him a more important role. Doc should not use Powe just as a player to give Jefferson a breather, but instead a valuable role player. Powe gives us a physical rebounding presence as well as a solid shot blocker (when he's not playing 7 footers). Its truly amazing to see how a 6'7" guy can get up there and gather rebounds and block shots against taller competition--his freakishly long arms and jumping ability give him that advantage. But not only this, but he's also a scoring weapon that Doc has failed to capitalize on yet. I'll say this right now; we'll have more success playing Jefferson and Powe together, as opposed to Jefferson and Gomes or Jefferson and Perkins. Powe takes Perkins' and Gomes' strengths and erases their weaknesses. Perkins is a rebounder and shot blocker, but is unreliable on offense. Gomes is a solid offensive producer, but is a liability on defense. Powe gives us that rebounding and shot blocking presence, plus the offensive abilities. He's more of a complete player than either of them. Powe is still more about potential at this point, but we're all hoping that he can reach his ceiling. And to do this, he'll need playing time to develop his game and confidence. And what better time to give him this than now? Now is the time to go into a full blown developmental stage.
I am not expecting our team to win many games right now, but I hope they remain competitive, and at the end of the game, if we are close, I will be more than content. But our team must be playing with hustle and energy. I can stomach losing as long as they are giving 100% effort. This is the time when the young players we have all been wanting to see will have to get playing time. Doc has to play Powe and Rondo now. If he doesn't there should be some public outcry. While Derren's plan calls for us to run, Doc is saying he plans to slow the game to a crawl. I agree that running is still our best bet but doubt we see much running unless Telfair and Rondo just can't help themselves. We probably won't be winning much until we get players back from their injuries but I do think these kids will fight hard and compete. Full blown developmental mode now will help the team when we are back to full strength.

Tony to Have Surgery - Torn ACL & MCL
Thursday, January 11, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 3:10 PM
January 11, 2007
The Celtics’ worst fears regarding Tony Allen’s left knee were realized this morning, when an examination revealed that the talented swingman tore both his anterior cruciate ligament and his medial collateral ligament following his dunk Wednesday night. The surgery could be as early as this weekend once the swelling in the knee goes down. He is expected to miss at least the next 6 months. He will have plenty of encouragement as he rehabs from the injury as Doc Rivers had the same injury in his career and Leon Powe has had 2 ACL tears.
The news on Scal's injury is not as severe. His injury – the result of a knee-to-knee collision with Gerald Green – was diagnosed as a bruised meniscus and sprained MCL in his right knee. Scal is due for a re-evaluation of the injury in another seven days. It is interesting that the collision didn't phase Green. The kid must have hard knees.
In the meantime, the team had only 9 players available for practice and Doc played small forward so they could have a 5 on 5 scrimage. West has said he would be available for Friday's game but Doc doesn't want to take chances and wants clearance from Ed Lacerte before letting him play.

Odds and Ends on Thursday
by FLCeltsFan 10:37 AM
January 11, 2007 With the image of Tony Allen's season ending crash to the ground still in my mind, there is a solemn tone to today's news articles. First is a morning update on Tony and Scal from the Herald Insider. Early news is that as expected, Tony tore his ACL and will miss the rest of the season. The news on Scal is that he may just have a bruise or a sprain rather than a tear. Hopefully it will keep him out long enough for Powe to get some quality minutes.
Moving right along, you will find reports on the game in the Herald, Globe, Projo, and Worcester Telegram. Although, most of the game reports center on who is not playing rather than who was. With the latest injuries, there are just 9 players available for duty. In every report, the loss of Tony Allen overshadows the loss of the game. Even after Tony went down, the young Celtics didn't give up, though. In the 4th quarter, a unit of Sebastian Telfair, Kendrick Perkins, Gerald Green, Leon Powe and Ryan Gomes went on a 14-0 run, cutting the Indiana margin to 84-80 with 4:27 left. But Indiana was just too strong and took the game over from there on. But this run and the play of these young guys does give hope for the future.
The Herald Notebook centers on all the injury news from yesterday. West sat out practice and couldn't go last night. Wally reports just before game time unable to go. Over compensating for the two unhealed sprained ankles have caused his surgically repaird knee to swell and he needs to sit 1-2 weeks. Perk and Al started together last night and were successful in their time together but whether Perk or Gomes starts will depend on matchups in future games.
Matt Kalman has a piece in the Herald that reports that the Celtics 3 leading scorers are out of action right now with Pierce, Wally and Tony all injured. The Celtics will be looking to some very young players to carry the scoring load now, especially Green and Jefferson and hopefully they will respond.
The Globe Notebook also centers on the injury news. The news on Pierce wasn't good after re-evaluation, either. He will need to keep the protective boot on for at least another week or two instead of getting it off this week as originally hoped. West is talking about trying to play against the Raptors but he is really hurting and so Doc is taking that with a grain of salt. Delonte is a warrior, but needs to heal so that he doesn't do permanent damage while trying to play in pain. Green went for a career high in minutes and once again Powe was a force in limited minutes. Eric Weiss has a good article on CelticsBlog that takes a look at the emotional toll that losing Tony Allen took on the team. Tony was the emotional leader and was playing the best basketball of his career. He was the defensive captain and when he went down, the collective air went out of the team.
Celtics.com tells us that even though the Celtics were down after Tony's injury, they played with heart and have vowed to stick together and are stressing the need for unity, especially now. Al sees this as a test from the "basketball gods" and is determined to stick together and get through it as a team.
The Projo Notebook reports that all of the injuries have put the Celtics in M*A*S*H mode. It wasn't flu symptoms as originally reported that sidelined Gomes in the Orlando game. It was food poisoning from some seafood he ate. Gomes feels that the Celtics are stronger from playing without Pierce:
"We're not looking over our shoulder any more," said Gomes. "A lot of guys are being more aggressive. If we sharpen up our attack mentally when he comes back the (opposing) defense will have to play even more guys honestly." There is that silver lining again. It has to be some kind of a record, but the Celtics started 4 players who came to the pros directly from high school last night when they started Perk, Al, Telfair and Green alongside Tony Allen. At 24 (he turns 25 today), Tony was the oldest player in our starting lineup that averaged just 22 years old. On the other hand, the youngest player in the Pacers' starting 5 was 26. Doc once again promises to play Green more with both Pierce and Wally out. This is a good thing.
The Celtics don't play today and their practice will be an important one as the team will be regrouping after learning that they will be without Tony, Wally, and Scal for an extended period and without West for at least a game or 2. With this group, I don't see them giving up, but will regroup and pull together. They may not win, but they will go down fighting.

Is There a Silver Lining?
by FLCeltsFan 10:17 AM
January 11, 2007
I have been reading all the articles this morning and reading message board and blog posts and everything is doom and gloom. Posters are threatening to jump off the nearest bridge and are full of despair after losing 4 players in one day (West and Wally before the game and Tony and Scal during the game). Many theorize that the team is being cursed by Red for bringing in a dance team. Others feel that this is a curse that continues on from the death of Len Bias through the death of Reggie Lewis and the long 20 years of mediocrity as a team.
Don't get me wrong, losing Tony hurts. It hurts a lot. He was just taking his game to the next level and now will likely have to start over again with surgery and rehab and who knows if or when he will return to this level. It is this injury that truly hurts the Celtics. He was one of our young players who finally was stepping up and taking his game to the next level. He was becoming a leader and the others looked to him as their defensive captain. Yes, losing Tony hurts, but is there a silver lining in here somewhere?
We knew coming in that we weren't going to challenge for a title this season anyway. The best we could hope for this season was to see progress in our young players, see progress in team chemistry, and take one step forward by making the playoffs with probably a first round exit. We have had injuries from the very start. Ratliff never really was available and has played only 44 minutes. Then there was Al's appendix and Perk's plantar fasciitis. And West's assortment of injuries culminating in this latest back injury. Wally has had assorted ankle sprains and now his knee is swelling back up. Kandi went down with the abdominal tear. Gomes had the calf strain and food poisoning. Pierce has the stress reaction and now Scal went down with a knee injury in the lastest game.
We knew coming in that this was a season for the kids to take the next step in their careers. Doc has proved in the past that he won't play the young players over vets unless he is forced to by a trade or injuries. Last season it wasn't until Blount was traded that Perk got any playing time at all. And then it wasn't near enough because Raef was still here. Even with the injuries to Perk and Kandi, Doc still didn't play Powe. It took Scal going down last night for Powe to finally get some playing time even though every time he plays, he does good things. Last night's 7 point 7 rebound performance in 11 minutes was just another example.
Gerald got to start and got minutes when Pierce and Wally were out but as soon as Wally was well enough to hobble onto the floor, Gerald was moved back to limited minutes while Wally played 30+ every night, even though his mobility was clearly limited and at times he was hurting the team more than helping it. Now, Doc doesn't have much choice but to play Green big minutes. Every minute this kid is on the floor makes him a better player and makes our future brighter and brings us closer to being a championship caliber team.
With West able to play and with Wally on the floor, Rondo sits on the bench. Rondo brings energy and defense to the team and yet he sits on the bench. I truly believe that Rondo is our future answer to the 20 year search for a point guard. The kid does so much well. The only thing he can't do well is to shoot from the outside but with his quick first step, he can get to the basket and score that way. He also has great basketball IQ and can find the open man. And his defense sets him apart from both West and Telfair. He may not have West's height, but he has long arms and very long hands and that makes him play much taller than he is. With Wally and Tony out, West should play at the 2 when he comes back and Rondo will get the minutes he needs to take that step toward becoming our answer at the PG spot. I am not the only one who feels that way, either. None other than Bob Cousy voiced that same opinion when he did the color commentary for the Magic game.
With Scal out now, Doc finally has to play Powe. This kid brings everything this team needs. He brings defense in the paint, rebounding and toughness. Every time Doc gives him minutes, he produces in a big way. In the 2 games he got 15+ minutes, he averaged a double double. And in the brief stints that Doc gives him, he makes the most of the minutes he gets. Last night he played 11 minutes and finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block. The last time he got into the game, he had 5 points and 4 rebounds in under 3 minutes. But yet Doc insisted on keeping Leon on the bench and playing Scal who may be playing better than last year but doesn't bring near what Powe does. Powe may be undersized but he plays so much bigger. With his energy and toughness, he has the ability to dominate even though not as tall as some of the players he goes up against. Powe needs playing time. If he is this good with very, very limited minutes, consider how good he will be when he actually gets to play.
With all the injuries, the skeleton corps of players that we have left will play harder and they will draw closer together and it will make us a much stronger and closer knit team when the injured players return. I don't believe that we would ever tank as a team but with a plethora of injuries, even though we are playing hard, we have little chance of winning most of our games. There are several big men at the top of this year's draft who could make a huge difference in a team and we should be in good position to draft one of them. We weren't going to win a championship this season. We needed the young players to get experience and step up and now they have no chance but to do just that. Hopefully next year we will have a much stronger team, great chemistry because of all they have been through, a high draft pick, a new coach, and a chance to challenge for a championship.

Celtics Lose Game and 2 More Players
Wednesday, January 10, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 10:06 PM
January 10, 2007 The Celtics lost to the Indiana Pacers 97-84 but that wasn't the biggest loss. With 3:01 left in the third, Tony went in for a dunk after he was fouled and went down clutching his left knee. Dickerson said that it looks like he may be lost for the rest of the season. Earlier in the game, Scal went down and hurt his right knee. Both are undergoing MRI's to determine the damage. Tony had 19 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals already when he went down. He was playing the best ball of his career and it losing him is a huge loss. If this keeps up, we may run out of players.
On the bright side, Perk and Al started the game and played well together. Perk finished with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks and played some good defense in the paint. Al finished with 4 points and 13 rebounds. He couldn't seem to get his offense on track tonight and missed several shots in the paint. A bright spot (for me at least) was that Powe finally got into the game. As with every game that he gets minutes in, he made the most of them with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in just 11 minutes. I love this kid.
Gerald Green played 43 minutes but struggled with his shot going 5-15 and finishing with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He had a couple of his fly by dunks to add some excitement to the game. Allen Ray came in after Tony was carried off the court and finished with 3 points, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Gomes had 7 points and 1 rebound and didn't seem to be his normal aggressive self. I am not sure if it is a confidence thing or if he is still not feeling well. Or maybe coming off the bench threw him off. Rondo had a solid game and finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal in just 12+ minutes. Telfair had a solid game with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal, starting in place of the injured Delonte West.
Powe and Rondo both continue to impress in limited minutes. I still don't understand why these two kids aren't playing more. Hopefully Scal will need to rest his knee for awhile and Delonte will play at the 2 when he comes back because Wally and Tony are out and Doc will have no choice but to play Powe and Rondo.
Injuries are decimating this team. Wally will be out for 1 - 2 weeks. West is out for another game or two at least. Scal may be out awhile. Tony may be out for the rest of the season. Pierce will still have to wear the protective boot for another week or more and so he won't be back any time soon. Losing Tony tonight is a real blow to the team as he was the one young player that had taken the step to the next level with his play. It was impressive that the players that were left didn't give up but fought hard until the end.

Wally Out 1-2 Weeks
by FLCeltsFan 7:14 PM
January 10, 2007 FSN Celtics Tonight just announced that Wally will be out for 1-2 weeks. He has been playing with the 2 sprained ankles and that caused him to put too much pressure on his knee. So, now he will be out with his ankles and his knee. They repeated that Doc plans to start Al and Perk together and with Wally out, I imagine that Green should start as well.

Perk to Start Along Side Al ... West is Out
by FLCeltsFan 4:20 PM
January 10, 2007 According to the Globe, Delonte West will not be in uniform for tonight's game against Indiana. He may also miss Friday and Saturday's games as well. Sebastian Telfair will start at the Point.
It also mentions that Doc will start Perk and Al together tonight. It is unclear whether this is a move to shake things up because Doc has realized that they play well together, or if Gomes is still not feeling well. It really isn't like Doc to start Perk because he pairs well with Al, but you never know. Who knows, maybe Clifford Ray is holding his clipboard hostage until he does. Either way, this is good news.

Wednesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:06 AM
January 10, 2007 Celtics face the Pacers tonight at home. They are coming in somewhat rested and with a "quality" practice under their belts but still hurting with West and Wally on the shelf for the practice. West may or may not play tonight and if he does play, can he be effective? Will he do more harm to himself by pushing himself to play? Same goes for Wally. First he had 1 sprained ankle. Then he had 2 sprained ankles. Now he has 2 sprained ankles and a swollen knee from compensating for his 2 sprained ankles. And it isn't like Wally is playing so great that Doc can't stand being without him. Doc should sit Wally and let him get healthy and play Green to give him the minutes he needs to grow. Same with West. Let the guy heal and play Rondo more. And while he is at it. PLAY POWE!! But this is Doc we are talking about and he will limit Wally to 35-40 minutes and will play Scal 30 minutes and will play West even if he has to drag himself onto the floor.
The Globe Notebook reports that West and Wally sat out practice. Doc will be surprised if West can go tonight and maybe not even Friday. But Wally should go with possibly limited minutes. We saw how Doc limits Wally's minutes. He played him into the ground last season when he was playing on a creaky knee. More on this can be found here. Also in this article, Perk conjectures that possibly their play at home has been suffering from the cold in the arena. Maybe Wyc could spring for some heat in the place. Pierce's progress should be getting re-evaluated some time this week.
The Herald Notebook chronicle's Green's problems getting used to the new/old ball. His 3's are on target but coming up short or long. He will spend one day after practice shooting 3's till he gets the feel right. The league really made a mistake going to the new ball without more feedback from the players. And then switching back mid year was an even bigger mistake in my opinion. Perk is still working on getting back in game shape after being out for 10 games. With practice at a premium and playing time limited, it has taken awhile but he is making progress.
Celtics.com reports that Tony is having success by taking the ball to the basket. He has benefitted the most from Pierce's absence. It may be because Doc hasn't given any of the other young players more playing time, though. Tony has been the only player (including the vets) that has been aggressive on both ends of the floor on a consistent basis. But as mentioned yesterday, Mike Fine wonders if this may get him traded rather than cement his place on the team.
Scott Souza reports on the Celtics' quality practice after the extended period of travel and away games. With Pierce out, the Celtics are looking for leadership and Tony has stepped up to lead with his play and Delonte seems to be the vocal leader. I wouldn't count out Perk as a leader either as he has stepped up several times even when Pierce was in the lineup. My favorite time was in Perk's second year when he called out Pierce for his lackluster play. Speaking of Perk, it reports that the pain is still there in his foot but now it is manageable. He has been trying to play himself back into game shape with limited minutes and virtually no practices. I love Perk.
Blackathlete.net reports that in spite of the losses, there is a silver lining for the Celtics. I have been saying this all along also. We have seen steady growth from Al, Tony, and Gerald and in spite of the losses, they have produced some great numbers. When everyone gets healthy, we are going to be a deep and very good team. Many fans are impatient and want to win now, but I see some good things happening if we can be patient just a little longer. This next draft is deep with some very promising big men at the top. We have young players who are just starting to come into their own and will become stars if we keep this team together and don't make any desperation moves.
Playing at home isn't as comforting as it should be since we have struggled so far at home. The Pacers have been playing strong since O'Neal has challenged his teammates. They have won 2 in a row but they played last night. In spite of being listed as day to day with a sprained ankle, O'Neal played 30+ minutes last night. We can only hope they will come in tired and give us a chance to steal one at home. We will have to play a lot better than we did in Orlando to do so, though. Shooting 32% is just not going to get it done. Join us on Celtics Green for the play by play tonight.

Danny Making Offers... Could Tony Be Trade Bait?
Tuesday, January 9, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 4:00 PM
January 9, 2007 2 things of note this afternoon. First, The Memphis Commercial Appeal has a little blurb today that says that Danny has made an offer for Stromile Swift, even if it was a feeble one.
Griz president Jerry West disparaged any notion that a healthy and happy Swift can be had in a trade as has been rumored since coach Mike Fratello was fired. But the Grizzlies' unwillingness to part with Swift hasn't prevented teams such as Boston, Minnesota and Sacramento from making offers, however feeble, over the past two weeks. This tells me two things. Danny is still out there making calls and trying to make a trade and that he isn't willing to give up the core of players like Al or Gerald to make a trade.
Second, Mike Fine, who has been a bit on the negative side in his articles hints that Tony's new found success may just make him a tradeable commodity. First, he mentions Danny's history of making a big trade at the deadline in each of his 3 years at the helm. The NBA trading deadline is six weeks away, and the likelihood that Celtics director of operations Danny Ainge will make a pre-deadline (Feb. 22, 3 p.m.) deal is strong. In each of his three previous years with the Celtics that’s exactly what he did, and he wasn’t messing around with fringe players, either. Then he goes into what makes Tony a prime candidate for a trade. He’s got a player, Allen, performing at the upper levels of his ability, a team that is underachieving and going nowhere and a team that needs to get older, bringing in some talented veterans who can settle the situation. And finally touches on the reasons that Danny may possibly not want to or be able to move him. Allen doesn’t want to go anywhere. There’s a feeling that his legal issues stemming from an incident outside a Chicago nightclub (assault charges are pending) may be cleared up when they resume in April, but other teams might be scared away by it.There’s also the matter of the right knee, which was operated on in September, 2005. Allen said it’s still sore, certainly giving potential suitors room for pause. Tony just may be the trade bait that Danny needs to bring in another veteran, or he may be the player that Danny keeps because he has stepped up his play. I am sure we will know soon enough.

Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 8:03 AM
January 9, 2007 Not much going on around the Celtics Nation today. Both the Herald and the Globe have articles on the Celtics home woes along with some conjecture as to why they are losing at home but winning on the road. I can see why Scal would play better on the road since he isn't getting booed everytime he touches the ball. But why the team plays poorly at home is puzzling. I sure hope they figure it out or this could be a very long season.
The Green Room discusses Tony Allen and asks if he could be the new Antoine Walker. No, not because he needs to go to Weight Watchers, but because he has been inconsistent. It seems though that he is on a roll now and heading in the right direction. Part of his inconsistencies came from the injury and trying to get his confidence back and some are due to trying to do too much at times. Right now, though, he has been our best player. When Pierce comes back, Tony shoul start instead of Wally.
Slow news day today. Hope the Celtics are using the dayto figure out what went wrong in Orlando and fixing it. We face the Pacers at home tomorrow and a win sure would be nice.

Monday Odds and Ends
Monday, January 8, 2007
by FLCeltsFan 8:02 AM
January 8, 2007 The Celtics came out flat yesterday and after a very uninspired first half played some decent basketball in the second half. It was certainly not a pretty game to watch by any stretch of the imagination. I still can't understand keeping Powe on the bench when we are being out rebounded by 20. Could he have done any worse than the players out there? Wally played terrible- couldn't shoot and didn't rebound and yet Doc keeps him out there because he gives veteran leadership. Unfortunately his leadership led us right down the tubes. You can find game reports in the Globe and the Herald.
In the Herald Notebook, Bulpett mentions that Doc is still planning on buying in Boston after this season when his daughter graduates from high school. In order to do that, he would have to be assured a contract extension because he only has 1 year on his contract and just about everyone in the Celtics Nation is hoping for less than that. Nestled in the middle of this article right after discussing Ryan Gomes' flu, is this quote:
“I’m worried about (Kendrick Perkins [stats]) a little bit with his foot. You could see clearly he just couldn’t move at times.”. . . This is coming a night after Perk seemed to move better than he has since before the injury and was active on both ends of the floor. Very curious.
In Shira's piece in the Globe, she recall's Doc's dismay over the selfish play in the first half with no passing and no defense. It was just an ugly, ugly game.
The Globe Notebook starts by focusing on the play of Jameer Nelson and Delonte West and what they have done for St Joe's reputation. Both players have worked hard to get to where they are. Also mentioned is the fact that Doc called out Al at halftime for giving up too many rebounds. I ask again, where was Leon Powe while we were getting out rebounded by 20? Finally, Doc gets to spend an extra day at home with his family and Wally returns to struggling after one game where he looked to be back on track. One thing about Wally, struggling with his shot in no way stops him from shooting.
Finally, Florida Today gives a game report from the Orlando viewpoint. This quote stands out: Had the Magic not been playing the woefully inept Celtics, their 87-79 victory before 16,868 fans at Amway Arena almost certainly wouldn't have been possible. So now, in the view of the other teams, the Celtics are woefully inept. That really hurts.
