Just Scratching the Surface

In interviews after the Denver game, both Pierce and Garnett mentioned that the team is just scratching the surface of what they can do. From the ESPN recap: We are just scratching the surface on what we can do," Pierce said. "We enjoy seeing the next player make a great play and no one cares who gets credit." KG said the same thing in his press conference. After watching them put on a clinic as they dismantled the Nuggets, that has to do 2 things. First, it has to make Celtics fans giddy. They have indeed improved from the first game to the third game. Their passing game is a thing of beauty and their defense is stifling. I haven't been this excited about a Celtics team in a long, long time.
The second thing it does is that it has to make other teams getting ready to play the Celtics a bit worried. Just as Pierce and Ray Allen have said, teams are going to be afraid of coming into the Garden. They will have the intimidation factor that the Celtics of old used to have. And then, after watching them dominate two of the expected playoff teams and beat another in OT, they hear that this team is just scratching the surface. It has to disconcerting to them.
With the intensity of Kevin Garnett rubbing off on the rest of the team, you know that they won't be satisfied with the last win but will work harder to get the next one. The two photos here say it all:
You would never know by the intensity in these two photos that their team is up by 30 in the 4th quarter, but that is exactly the case. But yet, they look as though it is a 2 point game with seconds to go. With this kind of intensity and drive, they will never be satisified with what they have done and will continue to work to get better.
There were worries about how long it would take for the team to gel and develop chemistry. Right from the first game, they seemed like they had been playing together for years. This can only improve also as they learn each other's tendencies. There is so much to be excited about with this team. Whether it is Pierce's behind the back pass to Perk for the dunk, KG's intensity even at the end of a blow out, Pierce's alley oop to KG for the monster jam, or any one of many great plays we have seen so far, Celtics fans have to be excited. And, to think that they are just scratching the surface has to make Celtics fans very, very happy and make opponents more than just a little worried.
