First of all let me wish all my fellow Celtics fans a very happy and safe 4th! Now, on to the Celtics news of the day. The Herald reports that the Celtics pulled a no brainer and picked up Gomes' option. They are still undecided about Allan Ray. We have until August 1 to decide on this season for Ray's contract and I get the feeling it will depend a lot on his performance in Summer League as well as who Danny picks up in free agency and trades. Also reported is that the Celtics will not replace Chris Wallace, but will shift responsibilities among those already with the club, including Danny adding GM to his responsibilities.
The Globe reports on Lewis's signing with Orlando. Detroit is looking to keep Billups. Pacers are looking to Europe for free agents. Lakers are checking into Derek Fisher. Yi struggled in a summer league game against Dallas. Daily Herald reports that the Bulls are eyeing Gasol. It is interesting that everywhere I look teams are either signing free agents or there are rumors of teams going after some player or another. But there are no reports of Danny contacting players or teams. You have to wonder what he is planning.
There are more reports from our newest players. Patriot Ledger reports that with Allen and Pierce the Celtics will have offense and Big Baby is hoping to make a big impression. The Eagle Tribune and Gary Tanguay both see the draft day trade as a Ray of hope. Maine Coast Now feels that this time Danny's trade may just work.
In spite of all of the positive reports and opinions of how Allen and Pierce will fit together and complement each other, Hoopsworld has one that says that Allen and Pierce will get in each other's way. Shaq is thinking of running for sheriff. I don't know about you, but I think he would be a very imposing figure as a sheriff. Shamrock Headband asks if Al is worth the max. I don't think Al will ask for the max. He hasn't proved himself yet. I see him signing for around 8-9 million and then playing to get that max contract when this one runs out. Maybe if he has a monster year this season and proves himself, he may be able to ask for the max but as of right now, no.
SI.com reports that in spite of his track record, Darko may be able to score big in free agency. I would like to see the Celtics at least make a pitch for him. He made some big strides last year and may be ready to take that next step this season. Draft Express takes a look at the top overseas free agents in Part 1 and Part 2. With Chris Wallace spending a large amount of time over seas, presumably scouting players there, it amazes me that the Celtics are one of only a couple of teams without even one European player.
Hoopsworld has a list of all the Summer League rosters. FSN is going to have a Summer League preview on Sports Tonight. The Celtics held their first practice last night and will be practicing again today. I really can't wait to see them play. I expected to see some reports from the first practice, but maybe they will come out today.
