D-League Affiliates Announced
Thursday, July 5, 2007

The NBA has announced the D-League affiliates for the 2007-08 season and for the third year in a row, the Celtics will have a new D-League affiliate. The Austin Toros that were the Celtics affiliate last season were purchased by the San Antonio Spurs and so will only be affiliated with that team. The Celtics new affiliate will be the Utah Flash in Orem, Utah, who are also affiliated with the Utah Jazz.
The Flash play in the 8,500 seat McKay Center in Orem, Utah. They are coached by Brad Jones. Brad Jones has served as a regional scout for the Utah Jazz since 2001. His new position as head coach of the Utah Flash combines his experience with professional basketball and his experience coaching the fast-paced action of college ball. Since 2003. Jones has taught as an adjunct professor at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Prior to teaching at SLU, Jones was associate athletics director and head men’s basketball coach at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn. At Lambuth, Jones earned two conference titles, was twice named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, coached five consecutive seasons with 20+ wins, and led the team to its first national tournament appearance in school history. During his tenure at Lambuth, he also taught health and physical education. As an undergraduate collegiate athlete, Jones was appointed captain of the basketball team and won both Male Athlete of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year awards. Jones brings to the Utah Flash a passion for basketball and enthusiasm for preparing players for the NBA. He plans to mimic the coaching style of the coaching staff of the Utah Jazz, in order to best capitalize on a win-win major-minor league partnership. This will be the inaugural season for the Flash. In past years, the Celtics have not used the D-League extensively, but Gerald Green did benefit from his time with the Fayetteville Patriots and Allan Ray was sent to the Austin Toros last season. However, his time there was marred by the death of coach Dennis Johnson and he didn't get to play much while he was there. "The Celtics are happy to be associated with the Utah Flash," said Ainge. "The Flash is located near familiar territory where I played a few years ago, on the campus of BYU. I'm sure the Flash will provide some memorable games of their own." It will be interesting to see if the Celtics take advantage of the Flash this season. Only first and second year players are eligible and so the only players who could see time there would be Leon Powe, Rajon Rondo, Glen Davis and Gabe Pruitt.
