What This Team Needs (without giving up too much to get it)

February 16, 2007 Once again, Derrenmatts over on Celtics Green has come up with a well thought out post that makes a lot of sense.
After some long drawn out thinking, this is the final piece I feel we need to become future NBA champions; a big bodied 7 footer with a lot of basketball smarts, who can clear space for rebounds and score a lot on putbacks. Notice I didn't say a stud big man, nor did I mention Greg Oden's name. I think we can be champions even without Oden. I also didn't mention Pau Gasol. I think we can win a championship even without a guy of Gasol's caliber. The reason is simple--we have a potential awesome trio of scorers who can carry the scoring load all by themselves. Jefferson, Pierce, and Gerald will be a tough threesome to matchup against. They are turning out to be good team scorers, but can get points individually if they need to; and that's important when the shot clock is winding down. Plus, Rajon is a creative scorer as well, even without attempting a single jumper in a game. Teams cannot forget about him, or leave him to double up on our trio because he will hurt them. And I must remind you all to not forget about Telfair--yep, Bassy's got a bit of Isaiah Thomas in him, but he's just got to figure out how to play well with his teammates. So we have a lot of scoring firepower, and teams will not be able to stop us from exploding. Getting another high scoring big man is not high on our list. It would be if we lose either Pierce or Gerald, but if we have our scoring trio intact, then we don't need to go out and get another scorer. The missing piece is a blue collar, big bodied 7 footer who can secure space in the paint to grab 10 rpg, who excels in grabbing offensive rebounds and converting putback shots, and who can think on his feet and beat his man by outhinking him. A guy who can combine with Jefferson to give us a 20+ rpg frontcourt is golden. A guy who can clean up misses and convert putback shots will keep us from going into scoring droughts, or keep our scoring drives alive. A guy who can think on his feet will be able to bail us out of trouble when teams double and triple team of Big 3. So who fits the bill? Well, there are a few of them around: In the Draft Joakim Noah Spencer Hawes (plus, he's a good scorer) Aaron Gray Around the NBA Brad Miller Big Z Chris Kaman Getting Greg Oden would be a dream come true. Getting Gasol would be terrific as well (but we'll probably lose Gerald). But its not necessary for us to achieve our goal of hanging Banner #17. What Derren says makes sense... We do have several young players who are starting to come into their own and could be important pieces in a championship team. Green and Jefferson have both made strides this season even though they still have a lot of room for growth. But they are still young and it isn't far fetched to believe that both could turn the corner to become All Stars. I believe that Tony Allen could be an important piece in the puzzle as well since he can be the defensive stopper that every team needs along with being an explosive scorer. Rondo has impressed me as a player who can be a top 5 point guard in the future. The kid has instincts you can't teach and has all the tools it takes to reach the top. I wouldn't count Perk out of the equation either because we haven't seen even close to what he can do since he has played injured all season. The bottom line is, I don't think we are as far away from contending as many believe. One player may be enough to put this team over the top and we don't necessarily have to sell the farm or lose the rest of our games to get him.
