Celtics Fight Hard but Come Up Short Against Raptors 95-86

January 12, 2007 The Celtics never gave up tonight and played with heart even though they were playing very short handed. I can see the young players growing game by game. Tonight's bright spots were Rajon Rondo and Leon Powe. I find it very hard to believe that Doc keeps these two kids on the bench until he has no choice but to play them.
Rondo finished the game with 23 points on 7-13 shooting to go with 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and only 1 turnover in 30 minutes of play. Rondo is our best point guard. For a kid who can't shoot, he scored at will tonight on a variety of drives and jumpers. The kid is an incredible talent and when Doc lets him play, he produces. Telfair had a good game as well with 14 points and 4 assist but he turned the ball over 4 times.
Powe was the other bright spot. He still only played 16 minutes but had 12 rebounds to go with 3 points and 3 steals. How Doc can not play him more is a real puzzle. He does good things whenever he is on the court and should be getting more playing time. Kandi played 19 minutes and finished with 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Perk also played limited minutes and finished with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. He still seems to be struggling somewhat. Al had only 9 points and 6 rebounds and struggled all night against double teams. Gomes played the most of any of the bigs and finished with 8 points 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Powe had the fewest minutes of any of the bigs and yet he out produced them all.
Allen Ray played 26 minutes and finished with 11 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Green struggled with his shot early but started to heat up toward the end of the game. He had 13 points on 4-14 shooting to go with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
I was very proud of this team as they played hard and never gave up. They came up short but we are seeing progress in individual players and they are pulling together as a team in spite of being very short handed. It won't get any easier as we face Detroit on the road tomorrow night. Detroit lost to Atlanta tonight so maybe there is a chance for us against them too. Powe and Rondo are earning playing time and hopefully Doc will continue to play them because good things happen when they are on the floor.
