Saturday Odds and Ends
Saturday, December 23, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:24 AM
December 23, 2006 First, let me vent. Doc says if you don't play hard, you will be subbed. Doc says no one was playing defense. Leon Powe gets in the game. No one plays harder. He was playing solid defense in the lane and in those 3 minutes had 3 rebounds and 1 point. So, why does he come out and not play again? I just don't understand it. This kid does good things and plays hard when he is in the game but he just doesn't get minutes even when we are very short on bigs. It just doesn't make sense. Ok, I got that out of my system so it is on to the happenings in Celtics Nation today.
The Herald, Globe, Metro West Daily, Worcester Telegram, Patriot Ledger, and Projo all have articles on last night's game. It all boils down to a lack of defense as an equally depleted Sixer team got to the basket at will. (getting back to my rant, Powe played defense but Doc didn't keep him in- I would have liked to see Al and Powe playing together for a period and I think things may have turned around). Hopefully the youngsters got a painful lesson last night and will take it to heart. I am hoping to see more team play and more defense when we face Denver on Tuesday.
Scott Souza makes the point that the Celtics were hesitant on offense and often passed up open shots when the game was on the line. The game plan has been to give Pierce the ball and stand and watch him, it will take some time for them to get used to being go to guys. They also have to learn that it is defense that wins games, not offense. If they ever get that message on a regular basis, we will be OK.
In the Globe, Green points to lack of defense as reason for the loss. He has some very mature things to say in this article. If he really understands it and if he takes it to heart, good things could follow.
Shira's article in the Globe points out that the Celtics plan is to share the load with Pierce out. No one player has to take it on alone. Teamwork would go a long way toward making this team into a winner. If they play as a team on both offense and defense they could be dangerous. But each player has to commit to team play and no one has to do it all themselves. It is when one player (even Pierce) tries to do too much that we fail.
The Green Room has a list of players who could benefit from the absence of Pierce. I agree that Powe could very much play a big part on this team but not if Doc only plays him 3 minutes. Green right now has a chance to break out as he will get the most minutes in Pierce's absence and if he takes advantage of it, he could be a big difference maker.
The good news today is that Perk is looking at a Wednesday return to action. Wally may also be back then, which would be a very good thing. Kandi may be able to play on Tuesday.
The Clarion Ledger has a good piece on Big Al and his emergence this season. We are finally seeing the Al Jefferson that we have all been waiting for since those flashes in his rookie season. We can only hope that his emergence will continue.
Draft.net has a piece that makes a case for not stacking stars on a team. At times two stars can complement each other, but more often than not, they simply don't play well together. It takes a team and a committment to defense to win a championship.
The Celtics don't practice until Tuesday's shoot around and hopefully there will be some soul searching and possibly some film watching in the meantime along with the Christmas turkey and gifts.

Sixers beat the Defenseless Celtics
Friday, December 22, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:26 PM
December 22, 2006 The Celtics kiddie corps played hard but came up short, literally. We let them get to the basket too easily and we were very weak on defense. We couldn't get stops all night long and they had a big advantage in the paint. Our tenacious defense of the win streak was nowhere to be seen. We are also turning the ball over way too much with 16 tonight.
There were some bright spots, though. Green started in place of the injured Pierce and scored 20 points to go with 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. He played with great energy and made some great plays. Al scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds along with 3 assists. Powe came in and played good defense in the paint. He had 3 rebounds and 1 point on a free throw in just over 3 minutes of play. Can someone tell me why this kid isn't this kid getting more minutes?
We had some good news from Dickerson during a time out. Perk has been cleared by the doctors to play on Wednesday. Wally is healing quicker than expected and may be able to go on Wednesday as well. That certainly would be a very welcome turn of events. Hopefully the rest of the team will find some defense between now and the game in Denver. If not, it is going to be a very long road trip.

Going from Bad to Worse
by FLCeltsFan 1:30 PM
December 22, 2006 First we learned that Perk would be out, then it was Wally, then Scal got the flu, and yesterday, we learned that Pierce would be out for 2-3 weeks. Now the most crushing blow of all. Boston Sports Media is reporting this:
As if the loss of Paul Pierce for the next couple weeks wasn't bad enough, now we learn that Tommy Heinsohn will also be out of action. Greg Dickerson will fill-in for Heinsohn as Celtics color analyst during the Boston Celtics upcoming West Coast road trip.
Heinsohn is unable to travel on the road trip due to a back ailment. Heinsohn will call in from home during the road to the FSN Celtics telecasts to give his input on the action. Get better soon, Tommy. We will miss you!! Somehow, a Greggy point just won't be the same.

Friday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:30 AM
December 22, 2006 Today's news is centered around Pierce's stress reaction and the lack of live bodies on the Celtics at this point. This could have a silver lining. With Pierce, Wally, and Perk out, it will force some of our young guys to step up. That being said, here is what is going on around the Celtics nation today.
Mark Murphy reports that the pain finally caught up to Pierce forcing him to miss the next 2-3 weeks. He also has an article that reports that the Celtics youngsters have an open door right now with injuries to Pierce and Wally. Roles are changing and it will be interesting to see how they respond when given the keys and the playing time.
The Globe also reports that injuries are adding up with Pierce being just the latest. They are blaming the injury for Pierce's inability to push off and get a shot off in the last game. It is fortunate that they caught it before it became a stress fracture, which could have ended his season.
Bob Ryan presents a very good case for why Philly is about to get worse. In the past, when a team has traded a superstar, they weren't able to rebound afterwards. My guess is that Philly is fine with that for this season so that they can win the Oden derby.
The Green Room makes a point that we all have said at one time or another and that is that the Celtics have relied too much on Pierce in clutch situations. It has been give Pierce the ball and 4 guys stand around and watch him work. With Pierce out, we are going to see some other players have to step up. It will be interesting to see which ones do. Last year, Gomes took advantage of injuries to break out. Will it be Green this year? We are about to find out. Stay tuned.
The Metro West Daily repeats the theme that Doc is desperate for live bodies that can stand on two feet. Pierce is out 2-3 weeks, Wally is out for at least another week and possibly more. Perk hopes to come back sometime on the West coast trip, Kandi is trying to come back but still sore. Scal has the flu. Ratliff is out indefinitely. Some of our young guys have to step up as we play 7 of our next 8 games on the road.
The Patriot Ledger reminds us that we get Iverson on our road trip. Just when we thought that the basketball gods were smiling down on us with the suspension to Melo, the clouds come over again and we will be facing an Allen Iverson who is determined to make Philly sorry they traded him without Pierce in our own lineup. Maybe the basketball gods want us to have Greg Oden.
In another piece, The Patriot Ledger reports that Big Al put the blame on himself for the loss to the Warriors. Many commentators were mentioning that Al's substandard game came right after Iverson was traded and he wasn't in immediate danger of a trade himself. I don't think that is a factor. It is more like that he is still young and will have ups and downs but hopefully from now on, the ups are going to be more often than the downs.
The depleted Celtics face the depleted Sixers tonight at the TD Banknorth Garden. Even without Pierce, we should win this one since Philly has been pretty much tanking. But they may surprise us if we take them for granted, especially since we are without our two top scorers. Philly can still be a dangerous team with Igoudala and Korver so hopefully we will come out strong and play for 48 minutes and win this one before we go out on the road with our kiddie corps. Join us on Celtics Green for the play by play tonight. NOTE: The game was originally scheduled for ESPN but they removed it when Iverson was suspended from the Sixers. At first it wasn't on the LP schedule but now it is showing up on League Pass as NBA 6. Since it was originally to be on ESPN, there will be a late start at 8:00 pm.

Pierce Out for the West Coast Trip
Thursday, December 21, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 1:28 PM
December 21, 2006 WEEI just reported that Pierce has a stress reaction in his left foot and will miss the West coast trip. A stress reaction can lead to a fracture if not rested and treated properly. This is a tough loss for the club. But we can look for a silver lining in that one of the kids, possibly Green will get the start and have a chance to take a leap given the extended playing time. Injuries last year gave us Gomes. Hopefully, injuries this year will give us Green.

Celtics Lose a Close One to the Warriors
Wednesday, December 20, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:29 PM
December 20, 2006 Celtics lost a close one to Golden State as Pierce was triple teamed on the last shot and failed to find either Allen or West, both of whom were wide open. So much for Pierce trusting his teammates.
Scal missed the game due to an illness. Gomes was back in the starting lineup and Kandi dressed but didn't play. Pierce played 44 minutes and finished with 27 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 turnovers. Pierce had a good game other than that last play. In all fairness, he was fouled at least twice and no call was made. As a matter of fact, the officiating was pretty much one sided all night. They did call a jump ball with .6 on the clock but Pierce was unable to tip it to aq teammate for a shot.
Al and Tony both had solid games again. Al finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. He was 5 of 7 from the field but unlike the past 4 games, his teammates didn't find him in the paint. They settled more for jumpers and trying to do more themselves. Gomes finished with 14 points but pulled down only 2 rebounds. We really need to get more than 2 rebounds from our starting power forward.
Telfair had 5 points and 5 assists and only 1 turnover. West played most of the minutes at back up point guard and finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and only 1 turnover. He keyed a come back run in the last two minutes that brought the Celtics from 8 down to just 1 down and a chance to win the game. Rondo played only 5 minutes but made every one of them count with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. I still don't understand why this kid isn't on the floor more. The PG's had only 2 turnovers, but the rest of the team more than made up for it. The team had 17 turnovers in the first half alone and finished with 20 for the game. That really hurt us. Tony had 5 turnovers, Pierce had 4, Gomes had 4, and Al had 4, so they were pretty much spread out.
Powe had 13 minutes and Green had 18 minutes. Powe finished with 2 points, 1 rebound, and 1 block. Green had 5 points, 1 rebound and 2 assists. I would like to see both getting regular minutes but that may not be possible when Perk, Kandi, Scal, and Wally come back.
It was a very tough loss because we played with them for most of the game and although we fell behind, we were able to get stops and climb back into the game. We had a great chance to win the game on the last shot, but Pierce blew it by trying to do it all by himself. I watched the end of the Charlotte/NY game and it was tied at 109 at the end of the second OT. The Knicks had the ball out of bounds with less than a second to go. Crawford inbounded the ball toward the basket and David Lee had a perfect tip in just before the buzzer sounded. It is pretty sad when Isaiah can design a much better end of game play than Doc can. Or maybe, the Knicks can execute it better than the Celtics. Either way, it was kind of depressing.

Wednesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:42 AM
December 20, 2006 The Celtics young players are breathing a little easier today knowing that Iverson is heading to Denver and they are staying here, at least until the next rumors start. But if the young players continue to progress and the team continues to win, that trade may not come. We can only watch and wait.
The news today is the Iverson trade to Denver and both the Globe and Herald have articles reporting it. Danny reinforces his stand that he isn't going to just give our kids away. That is good news.
In other news, The Herald discusses our corps of walking wounded. Soon we will have 14 ft of injured centers instead of 21 as Kandi has made it through 2 practices and hopes to suit up tonight. Gomes is planning a return to action tonight as well. In the absence of Perk, the team has committed to playing tough defense because they can't depend on a shot blocker and on Perk's defense to stop the play at the basket. Hopefully, they will continue to commit to tough defense when Perk comes back and we will be that much more effective. It is defense that has been winning games for us. It will be interesting to see how Doc deals with the rotation as we get players back from injuries.
The Herald Notebook begins with a fun recount of Pierce playing games with Patriots' tight end Daniel Graham. This team sounds like they have fun together and I can see why no one wants to be traded. They all genuinely like each other and have fun. With several of our young players picking up their games, a trade may not be necessary. Also mentioned in this article is the fact that Al may stay in the middle and Perk come off the bench at center.
The Globe Notebook reports that Jefferson may finally be realizing his potential. Doc attributes his recent spectacular play to the fact that he is finally healthy. Or it may be that the trade rumors lit a fire under him. Whichever it was, let's hope it continues because his play is a key to our continued winnning along with a committment to defense by everyone on the team. This article also reports that Wally may return quicker than originally expected.
The Green Room gives us 5 reasons for our current win streak. Credit Pierce rediscovering team play, Jefferson's continued spectacular play, Tony's reemergence as a player, solid point guard play, and Hustle, muscle and pride.
Draft Express has a player profile on Al Jefferson. Al credits defense as the reason for his own and the team's recent successes. Smart guy!!
In the Celtics.com article that reports Gomes' hopeful return tonight, there are questions about the bench scoring with Wally out. One reason I like Wally off the bench is that he shores up the scoring of our second team. In his absence, West and Green are going to have to pick up their scoring. This article also reports on a match between West and Gomes on NBA07 complete with trash talk from West.
Hoopsworld reports on our December so far, beginning with our improbable come back from 20 points down in New Jersey. If we are going to continue to win, we have to continue to play defense and have increased production from our bench especially as we head out West for a 5 game road trip.
Finally, it is game day with the Golden State Warriors coming to town. They have lost 8 in a row on the road and have been struggling lately. This could make them a dangerous team looking to break that streak. We can't take them for granted or get full of ourselves and get over confident. We need to come out and play hard for 48 minutes. I am looking forward to the day when this team can put together a good 48 minutes and build a lead and keep it. Join us tonight on Celtics Green for the play by play and for Q's every insightful commentary. Can we make it 6 in a row?

ESPN Reporting Iverson Traded to Denver
Tuesday, December 19, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 3:59 PM
December 19, 2006 ESPN is reporting that Philly has traded Allen Iverson to Denver for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 first round picks.
I see this as good and bad news. The good news is that we can stop worrying about losing Al and Gerald for Iverson. The bad news is that he should be in uniform and playing when we face Denver later this month.
Now that this is settled, we need more Gasol rumors to keep us busy.

Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:47 AM
December 19, 2006 The news today is all about the suspensions handed down in the NY/Denver brawl and what it all means to the league. Doc and Pierce chime in on the subject in a Herald article. It was surprising to me that there was no penalty for the coaches. Karl was wrong pushing the score up with his starters at the end of a blowout and Isaiah was wrong for sending Collins in to commit a hard foul. Both coaches were wrong and should have been disciplined. I wonder if a player will think twice before following Isaiah's ill conceived orders to take down a player the next time. Both the Globe and the Herald had articles about the suspensions.
Mark Murphy has a piece on Telfair. He has been looking to pass first rather than shoot. That could have something to do with his shot not falling lately more than his desire to get his teammates involved. I agree with Nash that he has been playing more tentatively. He hasn't been taking it to the basket as much, even when he has a clear path to do so and in the past few games, he hasn't been able to finish when he does get to the hoop. But, he has been taking good care of the ball and we are winning so something is working.
The Globe Notebook and also Celtics.com report a couple of twists on the injury front. Kandi surprised everyone by making it through the whole practice yesterday. He is still feeling some pain but wants to play and hopes to be activated for Wednesday's game against the Warriors. Wally on the other hand will be out until after our west coast trip with a sprained ankle. Perk is still icing his sore foot but has reported progress and feels he will be ready some time on the West coast trip. Gomes hopes to practice today and feels he can play tomorrow night. The question will be, how well will all these players integrate into the team as they come back from injury.
We reported yesterday that ESPN Power Rankings have the Celtics at 18, which is up from 28 the previous week. Today, Pincus Power Picks came out on Hoopsworld and has us at #16 with this to say:
For the second time this season the Celtics make a major jump in the rankings. After losing all their centers to injury, Al Jefferson has suddenly arrived as a force in the middle. The Celtics have even started to play some defense, which hasn't happened in a few years. Considering how abysmal the Atlantic Division is this year, Boston has a very good shot at landing the four seed.
And while we are speaking about how abysmal the Atlantic division is, SI.com has an article that conjectures that it is an "embarrassment to the sports world." The Celtics are a combined 43-76 and the Celtics with a 10 and 13 record lead the division.
The Atlantic may finish this season as the worst division in the history of professional sports. They're already the worst in recent memory. It is still early and with the Celtics and Nets both having to play through key injuries, either or both teams could take off on a long win streak and end up with a respectable record. I don't have much hope for the Knicks with Isaiah at the helm. It depends on how the Iverson sweepstakes end up to see what Philly will do but if they take too long, it may be too late to salvage their season. With Oden as the carrot dangling in front of them, that may just be the idea. Toronto has some intriguing pieces and if they come together, they may take off and go on a streak as well. So it is too early to pronounce the Atlantic as dead. 3 of the 5 teams are capable of making a run and of ending with a winning record.

Movin' On Up!!
Monday, December 18, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 7:41 PM
December 18, 2006 The latest ESPN Power Rankings are out and the Celtics have jumped from 28th last week to 18th this week. Amazing what a 5 game win streak will do for a team. We have the same record as the Heat who are ranked 16th. We also have the same number of wins as 5 teams ranked below us. Here is what they have to say in the little blurb that accompanies the rankings:
AI trade rumors might be messing with some teams, but they've reincarnated Jefferson and a Celts team that isn't exactly used to winning streaks. A reincarnated Jefferson to go with a rejuvenated Tony Allen have both helped this team on their win streak in spite of being depleted by injuries. Let's hope they keep playing like they have been and that we keep winning.

Injury Update
by FLCeltsFan 7:03 PM
December 18, 2006 Kandi returned for a full practice today, coming back earlier than he originally planned. He may be activated as soon as Wednesday's game but won't play much at first. Doc is hoping to be able to move him into the rotation for the West coast swing.
Ryan Gomes sat out today's practice but hopes to practice tomorrow and play Wednesday when the Warriors visit Boston.
The news on Wally isn't near as good. The sprain he suffered in the game against Charlotte is worse than the sprain he just returned from. That sprain kept him out 5 games. He is expected to miss the Celtics 5 game road trip later this month.
Speaking of our upcoming trip out west, our first game on the trip is in Denver and we found out today that the Nuggets will be without their leading scorer. Carmelo Anthony has been suspended 15 games and JR Smith has been suspended 10. Hopefully they won't be able to regroup in time for our game with them and we can start out road trip out on a positive note. Hopefully we won't go in there and expect a win to drop in our laps as we sometimes do.

Monday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:09 AM
December 18, 2006 Today the league should pass out fines and suspensions for the NY Brawl. In reading the articles about this, it is better than a soap opera. George Karl likes Larry Brown, Isaiah fires Larry Brown, George Karl doesn't like Isaiah and Isaiah doesn't like George Karl. George Karl leaves starters in till the end of a blowout to embarrass Isaiah. Isaiah threatens Melo to stay out of the paint. JR Smith gets a very hard foul for venturing into the paint. interesting stuff. If you want to read about it, check out The NY Daily News article.
Back to basketball instead of boxing, the Celtics are much more positive about their season today than they were a month ago. The Herald reports that the 5 game win streak has given the Celtics reason to believe they will make the playoffs once again. Doc says he has always believed in this team. I have believed in them also. We saw flashes of what they could be and it was exciting. They are now putting it together and being more consistent with their effort. I really like this team and like all of our young players.
The Globe reports that it is chemistry and defense that is driving their recent success. I have been saying for years that chemistry is many times underrated in building a contender. Chemistry is very important and together with defense can make a contender of a team without superstars. We saw this with the Pistons most recent championship team. Defense is the most important factor in winning and chemistry is right behind that. We are developing both and if they continue to improve in these two areas, the sky is the limit.
"We're doing what we have to do, and that's defense," said Al Jefferson. "Defense is taking us there. We're just trusting each other on defense, being there for each other. Our confidence is way up. But we're taking it one game at a time because we haven't been here in almost two years. You've got to be focused because teams are trying to knock you off. You can't relax because you've won three games or four or five in a row." Al has the right idea. We must commit to defense and the team has to build trust in one another. We also can't get over confident and have to stay hungry.
The Worcester Telegram has a good piece citing Joe Johnson and Chauncey Billips along with turnovers as reasons that Iverson is not the answer for Boston. I have been saying these same things also. I don't want to give away any of our young talented players and watch them become all stars. I don't want them to come back to haunt us and beat us long after the player we traded them for is long out of the league or no longer effective. And Iverson in particular isn't a good fit for the Celtics. Jefferson and Green could be the cornerstones for the future. But it’s too early to tell. Iverson scores a lot of points, would help the Celtics win more games this season, and he’d definitely make things more interesting on and off the court, but his selfish attitude would hurt in the locker room, and he’d be gone after the Celtics paid him $47 million over the next three years. And where would the Celtics be then? Kind of says it all.
