Five in a Row!!!!!!!!
Saturday, December 16, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:04 PM
December 16, 2006 The Celtics are on a roll and they are doing it with defense. They have won 5 in a row and 4 in a row on the road. All 5 wins have been team wins with the team playing together, playing team defense and finding the open man. And they have done this in spite of being short handed. Ryan Gomes injured his calf in the Philly game and has missed the last two games. Perk, Kandi and Ratliff are all still out. And tonight, Wally re-sprained his ankle after playing only 14 minutes and scoring only 2 points.
After his superhuman effort last night, Tony Allen played 37 minutes and finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. He was unable to finish several of his layups and that was probably because he was tired. But he had another solid game and played good defense on Morrison. I like him in the starting lineup and Wally coming off the bench.
Al had another solid game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal. He played good defense inside holding Okafor to 4 of 10 shooting. Scal put in a great effort, playing 40 minutes and finishing with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 block. He played with energy and fought for loose balls and rebounds. Powe played 10 minutes and had a solid performance with 5 points, 2 blocks and 1 steal. He wasn't credited with any rebounds but did tip several out to teammates.
Green had a few rough spots in his 10 minutes but also had some very good moments as well. He finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds and a steal that led to a highlight reel windmill dunk. Pierce had another spectacular game with 35 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block. He also only had 2 turnovers.
Telfair wasn't spectacular but didn't make a lot of mistakes either. He finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. West played back up point guard and seemed to be a step slow much of the time. He had 14 points to go with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Doc should play Rondo at the point and West at the 2 guard. I just don't understand why Rondo isn't getting minutes. He seems to play very well when he gets the chance and has even been hitting jumpers when he is open. He should be getting playing time as both Telfair and West have been struggling somewhat. I don't understand why Rondo hasn't been playing.
It was a good game. The momentum swung back and forth but the Celtics are learning how to finish games and how to get stops when they need them. They aren't folding when they get behind and have the ability now to regather when they get down and make runs. Now they have off until Wednesday to heal and rest. If we play defense like we have been and keep playing as a team, we may even have a 6 game win streak by Wednesday next week. Pretty exciting stuff.
ESPN has taken the Celtics-Sixers game off their schedule for Friday next week. We only had a couple of national TV appearances and now they are even taking those away. So sad because the Celtics are just starting to come together and are a very exciting team to watch.

Saturday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 11:50 AM
December 16, 2006 The Herald, Globe, MetroWest Daily, Worcester Telegram, and Projo all have articles on last night's win. Tony Allen had his break out game and we can only hope it will continue. If only his take it to the basket mentality would rub off on the rest of the team. Al Jefferson is also breaking out and finally the potential is turning into talent and production. Hopefully after Doc played Pierce, Al and Tony over 40 minutes last night, they still have enough left in the tank to beat the Bobcats tonight. Confidence on the team is soaring and hopefully that will encourage them to play with the same defensive intensity and energy rather than getting over confident and take the Bobcats for granted as they did the last time we had a win streak going.
The Herald and the Patriot Ledger both say that the Celtics want the trade rumors to stop. Doc seems to like the team he has now and I get the feeling that he really doesn't want a trade right now and doesn't look forward to coaching Iverson who has been known as a coach killer.
The Herald and Globe both have articles on Tony's break out game. He may finally be getting healthy, or maybe it is because he has his confidence back, or maybe it is because he is taking it straight to the basket instead of trying to dance around with it. But, whatever brought on his big game, I hope there is a lot more of it coming. He played 48 minutes and didn't even look winded afterwards. And it wasn't just his offense, but his defense and rebounding that were incredible. We can only hope for lots more of the same.
The Worcester Telegram reports that a calf injury kept Gomes out last night and could keep him out of tonight's game as well. They also report that Perk's foot is doing much better and he hopes to play on the upcoming 5 game road trip. Big Al's stomach is still a little sore but inspite of it, he is excelling. Perk isn't jealous of Al's success, though. He doesn't care if he starts or comes off the bench, he just wants to play and help the team win. Doc is still planning on starting Tony and bringing Wally off the bench. Tony has been successful in the starting lineup and Wally's scoring and leadership will help the second team. Green is happy with with the wins and isn't worried about his playing time. I just love this team. The chemistry is great and players aren't just out for themselves but for the team.
The Patriot Ledger has a good piece on Tommy and how he has always been loyal to the Celtics. I just love hearing his broadcasts. He is such an unapologetic kool aid drinking homer that you have to love it.
Finally for those who have been thinking that we should have kept Marcus Banks, the East Valley Tribune is reporting that he is disappointing them in Phoenix and that they are trying to trade him.
Let's hope that tomorrow we are celebrating our 5th win in a row. Go Celtics!!!

Is Gasol Next?
by FLCeltsFan 4:54 PM
December 15, 2006 We have heard rumors of the Grizzlies wanting to dump salary and the possible availabilityof Pau Gasol. Get ready for a lot more. TSN.ca is reporting that Gasol wants to go to a contender. They also report that Boston is one of the teams interested in him.
But Gasol's days in Memphis may be numbered. Speculation has swirled that the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics may be interested in acquiring him. "There is some truth in it, especially with the whole situation of the change of owners (with the Grizzlies)," Gasol told COPE. "The situation has been uncomfortable, but there are not only the Bulls and Boston, there are other teams interested."
Prior to this report, a poster on RealGM from France said that a journalist following Barcelona said that he is certain of a trade of Gasol to Boston and that Gasol's father was the source of it.
Just as the Iverson rumors should be coming to an end, we have Gasol rumors to focus on. I love this game!!!

Iverson to Denver Deal Close
by FLCeltsFan 11:50 AM
December 15, 2006 Fox Colorado is reporting that a deal that would send Iverson to Denver is close.
A source familiar with negotiations sas it would be a complicated trade involving at least three teams and at least five players. In addition, the Nuggets would likely have to give up both of their first round draft picks in the next draft. Danny has said that he would be happy to facilitate the trade by being a third team so if there are at least 3 teams, it is possible the Celtics could still be involved if they can get a quality player back. The Raptors and the Bobcats have also said that they would be willing to help facilitate a trade or it may be another team altogether involved. The article says that it could happen as soon as today so stay tuned.

Friday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 8:03 AM
December 15, 2006 There are conflicting stories today about the Celtics interest in Iverson. Marc Stein came out with a piece that says that the Celtics are still very much in the race for Iverson.
Even if Danny Ainge publicly brands the Celtics' chances as "slim," they will stay in the race – at some level – until the finish.... Then there's the under-pressure Ainge in Boston. Given the obvious odds against finding a third team to take on Ratliff, can anyone say with certainty that the Celts won't relent and give up Jefferson or Green? Bur then you read the piece from Bulpett and Murphy this morning in the Herald and it tells a completely different story. The Celtics appeared to be falling out of the running for Allen Iverson yesterday, but new information leaves open to question how deeply they were ever truly in it. According to sources, the Celts and 76ers did have discussions on a potential trade, but, contrary to published reports, at no time did the Celtics make a specific offer or did the Sixers make a specific request. So, depending on who you believe, we are either one of 3 teams close to making a deal, or we never really were all that interested and are even less interested now. I vote for the second option.
The Globe discusses the importance of defense in our latest 3 game win streak. I have said it from day one, when we play tough defense, we win. When we don't commit to defense for 48 minutes we lose. It is our defensive lapses that cause us to end up in big holes and also that allows other teams to come back when we have a big lead. Also in this piece we learn that Tony Allen finally has an April 23 trial date. If it interferes with a Celtics playoff series, he may get a continuance.
The Green Room takes a look at our recent 3 game win streak and discusses the individual performances of some of the players. Telfair in particular has been in a slump. At this time, Rondo has been playing much stronger and should be getting more minutes. He has even been hitting some jumpers which is more than Telfair has been doing lately. Now what is Doc's excuse? Big Al, Tony and Delonte seem to be breaking out lately and that is good news.
Boston Sports Review has a new article up that discusses the fact that the Celtics have not been progressing or regressing but more like moving sideways. I think we are progressing. Again this season we have been hit with a lot of injuries but the players have been picking up the slack and when we get healthy, which will be hopefully soon, I think the team will come together and make a run. We are already seeing some signs of it and I believe it is only going to keep getting better. Of course I live on green koolaid, but the signs are there. Now we just have to be more consistent.
Ryan Gomes sends his Holiday Greetings in the Celtics Beat. We've had some good practices lately and I think it's starting to click for us. Our veterans Paul, Wally and Scal really set the tone, and Doc is giving us some great game plans. When we execute them with consistency like we did on this recent trip, it shows us we can play with anyone. Now if we can just get some of our big guys back from injury we'll really start to come on and make some noise. So stick by us fans and I know you won't be disappointed. Just know that all of us love what we do, we love playing for the best fans in the NBA and we enjoy winning just as much as you do. My teammates and I have talked a lot about this in the past few days. We all really like Boston a lot, and know this team is moving in the right direction. Tonight we face the Nuggets at home. The last time we were sitting on a 3 game win streak we put in a dismal performance against the Bobcats. The team has admitted they may have taken the Cats too lightly and maybe let the 3 wins go to their heads. Hopefully they won't take the Nuggets for granted as they come in here 12 and 8 from a much stronger Western conference. A win tonight would go a long way toward boosting this team's confidence and showing that they are coming around. On the other hand, a loss would show that we are still an inconsistent team. Thursday Odds and Ends
Thursday, December 14, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:51 AM
December 14, 2006 The news on the Iverson front is that Philly is asking for too much. Several teams have said they are no longer interested. There are still a few in the running including the Wolves, Heat, and Clippers. While Danny says that there is a slim chance that he comes here, I don't know as I believe him. After all, he said that he wasn't going to trade Antoine only a week before he did it and on the day he brought Wally to Boston, he said he wasn't close on any deals. The Herald and The Globe both have articles to this effect. It is mentioned, however that the Celtics could get involved as a third party. Jackie MacMullen echoes my opinion that we don't need Iverson here no matter what the cost. The Eagle Tribune has a piece on Iverson trade rumors. They quote sources saying that Iverson most wants to go to Minny or Boston. Charlotte may also be involved if a third team is needed. I just wish they would make the trade and end all this speculation. I also hope that they send him someplace besides Boston.
The Herald, MetroWest Daily, and the Globe both report on our win last night in Philly. It was a win that was about defense as much as it was offense. Green played great defense on Korver. We faltered on offense early, but we defended well and that kept us in it. Also, we didn't need Pierce to put in a superhuman effort to win. Our young players are emerging and picking up the slack.
The Herald Notebook gives props to Gerald and Tony for their defense. Also discussed is Wally's return from his ankle sprain and Doc having fun with the Al and Green about the dinner they owe him.
The Globe Notebook starts out with the story that chances are slim that Iverson will come to the Celtics. Although it seems as though it is unlkely, Pierce says he would make it work if Iverson were to come here. He asserts that all stars are a bit selfish but that there is also respect between them. West says that he wants to stay in Boston but if traded to Philly, it wouldn't make him mad. Perk is doing well and walking without his boot. That is good news and hopefully he will be able to come back on schedule.
Philly.com says that West may be the key to the Iverson trade. West has said that he would welcome the chance to play in Philly but loves Boston and would rather stay here. While Danny says that the chances are slim, no one really believes him and Philly may not be getting as much as they hoped for. Also mentioned in the article is that Ray is staying ready to play and hoping for his chance.
Originally King said that he wanted to get the trade done quickly and it was reported that it would happen by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Now he is saying that he is in no hurry to get it done. This leaves a lot of teams in limbo and players looking over their shoulders. Hopefully it will be settled soon so we can get back to basketball and not chasing rumors.

Celtics Win 3rd In a Row on the Road
Wednesday, December 13, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:11 PM
December 14, 2006 It wasn't pretty but it was a win on the road, and the third win on the road in a row. The Celts were a bit flat in the first half, leading by only 2 at the half. But they came out more focused in the second half and built a lead and held onto it for a 101 to 81 win. We had 5 players in double figures and kept our turnovers down to only 12, mostly in the first half.
Tony Allen was the player of the game and the winner of the Tommy Award. He came out aggressive from the beginning and played very well on both ends of the court. He finished with 16 points with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Gomes once again had a solid game. We just take his play for granted because he does it night in and night out. Tonight he finished with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting to go with 7 rebounds.
Pierce was double and triple teamed all night and to his credit he didn't try to force things and finished with 18 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists to go with his customary 3 turnovers. He let the game come to him for the most part and that was a good thing. His teammates picked up the slack and came through. Al once again had a good game. He finished with 6 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. He played solid defense in the center against Dalembert as well.
Gerald played only 16 minutes but played very solid defense on Korver holding him to 7 points on 3 of 14 shooting. It was probably his best defensive game of his career. He also had a highlight reel dunk where he flew in on the baseline to slam it home. Rondo only got 6 minutes but had 4 points, one on a drive and one on an 18 footer, and 2 steals. As always when he comes into the game he brings energy and just picks up the game. Telfair had an off game but West played more minutes at the point.
After sitting out yesterday's practice with a bruised tailbone, West came in and played hard, scrapping for loose balls and taking it hard to the basket. He finished with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a blocked shot. He played most of his minutes at the point but moved over to the 2 for periods as well. One thing I noticed about West at the point is that he dribbles way too much. Wally came off the bench and shook off early rust to score 14 points to go with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Although players aren't supposed to lose their starting spot because of an injury, I really feel that this team is better with Wally coming off the bench and hope that Doc will consider it for future games.
Powe played only 7 minutes but finished with 2 points and 3 rebounds. This kid is a player and will really help us if he would only get consistent minutes. Scal played twice as many minutes and finished with 2 points and 2 rebounds. Scal hasn't been bad this season, I just think Powe could be so much better. Allan Ray got some of the very few cheers of the night when he came into the game in the 4th quarter.
It was a good win. Even though it has been against less than stellar competition, a 3 game win streak is a 3 game win streak and with all 3 wins coming on the road and against division rivals, that makes it even sweeter. I think this team is starting to come together and is showing why we don't need to get Iverson. Al is coming into his own as are several other players when they get the minutes. I think this is the beginning of something good. [Box Score] [Recap] [Play by Play]

Wednesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:11 AM
December 13, 2006 The Celtics are in Philly to take on the Sixers tonight. So far, Iverson is still in limbo. Reports are that the Celtics are moving further away from the forefront in the race to get Iverson. Apparently they are asking too much. This is a good thing in my opinion.
Pierce has said that he wants Iverson in Boston but the Green Room questions whether this is a bad move or not. It sends the message to his young teammates that he would be ok sending them elsewhere. I tend to agree that coming out in favor of a trade was a classless move on his part. Also in this article is a plea from Al to stay a Celtic. I love the kid's desire to play here and his certainty that this team can win together.
There are articles with rumors all over the web. The Herald reports that the Celtics are preparing to play the Sixers without him. It is very much possible that they are a better team without him. We shouldn't take them for granted. Projo asks what the Celtics are thinking to go after Iverson. The only reason to give up young and promising talented players for a disgruntled player on the tail end of his career would be if the owners want to put people in the seats. He won't help us win a championship and will only make more of the problems here that he has been making in Philly.
In her Globe article, Shira relates that the trade talks and the thought of being sent elsewhere has motivated Al to pick up his play. This is a good thing. Let's hope that the fire stays lit under him because one thing we very much need is for Al to emerge as a player this season.
The NY Daily News reports that the Warriors are working hard to land Iverson. Let's hope that King takes their offer. Sending him out West would be the best for the Sixers and for the Celtics as well.
Philly.com has a piece on Allan Ray. In spite of not getting playing time, Ray stays upbeat and continues to work hard on his game and in practice. He may be sent to the D League and he welcomes the chance for playing time there if he does.
Both the Globe and the Herald report that Wally is hoping to return to action tonight. He had a good practice yesterday and barring complications should be able to take the floor tonight in Philly. The Globe article reports that Perk is able to go without the protective boot and that is good news. Hopefully his foot is healing and he can be back to playing soon. Also mentioned is that Pierce bought the whole team Cheese Steaks. Sounds good to me.
In spite of all the hype in recent days saying that Gerald has earned more playing time and will be getting more minutes, he played only 6 minutes in the Knicks game. RealGM has a good article pointing to Green as the next carrier of the Celtics' Mystique.
Celtics are preparing for Philly tonight. Hopefully they won't take them for granted because of Iverson being out and the 8 game losing streak. They are a dangerous team now and desperate for a win. They are no longer predictable and will have scoring coming from different players. We need to come out and play 48 minutes on both ends of the floor. Join us on Celtics Green for the Play by play and Q's always interesting insights.

Iverson and Injury Update
Tuesday, December 12, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 8:55 PM
December 12, 2006 The Globe and the Herald both have updates on the Iverson trade saga. Shira has this to say:
The buzz around the league was that the Clippers were moving into the lead in the Iverson Derby. The Celtics were on the outside, in part, because the word was the price would be too high. She also says that one of the benefits of all the trade talk is that it has motivated Jefferson who has heard his name in trade rumors and he doesn't want them to send him anywhere.
The Globe has this to say about the race for Iverson:
The Celtics appeared to be on the outside looking in as the Sixers continued to peruse the numerous offers they have received for their shelved star, Allen Iverson. Two western conference teams - Denver with an offer said to include Nene, Eduardo Najera and J.R. Smith, and the Clippers with a package that may or may not include the much coveted Shaun Livingston - reportedly had jumped to the front of what was characterized as a very frustrated pack. They also have some news on the injury front. Delonte sat out practices as he bruised his tailbone in a fall in the Knicks game but he plans to play tomorrow night. Wally practiced today and barring any complications, he plans to play tomorrow night. source:The Globe and The Herald

Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 1:03 PM
December 12, 2006 First of all, some good news. There are a couple of reports that Al is not available for trade. Chris Sheridan voices this in his ESPN Insider column
Tonight's blog entry comes from Madison Square Garden, where I informed Al Jefferson of the Celtics that he might have been the very reason why Allen Iverson is a Sixer rather than a Celtic. Word spread around the NBA grapevine quickly Monday that the Celtics had told the 76ers they were not willing to part with the 21-year-old big man in an Iverson trade. Then in Newsday, there is confirmation from Doc as to the same thing. Told after the game that Jefferson doesn't want to be traded, Rivers said: "He won't be. I try to stay out of it because I have to coach the players and I don't want to lie to the players. But I'm pretty comfortable in saying that Al will be here." Finally, Peter Vescey echoes the same thing in his column in the NY Post. Boston. Danny Ainge is determined to land himself an established veteran and Iverson is it. Paul Pierce is not available. Plenty of sacrificial Celtics are there for the 76ers' plucking, except Al Jefferson. It'd be stunning to think otherwise. This is good news and hopefully it is true because trading Jefferson would be shooting ourselves in the foot.
Staying on the subject of the Iverson trade, Bob Ryan has a great article in the Globe that voices what many of us think. Alan Iverson is uncoachable and has trouble playing well with others. Bringing him to this team would be a major mistake. I hope Danny is reading. The Globe also has an article that discusses possible trade scenarios for Iverson with Pierce voicing the opinion that if Baron Davis is traded to Philly he won't be happy. Ratliff openly questions whether Pierce and Iverson can coexist.
The Herald reports that the players are hearing the trade rumors and not all of them want a trade to go down. Big Al, in particular wants to keep this team together and he also wants to stay a Celtic for life. I, for one, hope he gets his wish. Also in this article, Wally ran with the team for the first time and looked good, but still had a lot of pain in the ankle so is still day to day. The Bennington Banner has another good article on the possible trade to get Iverson.
JB has an entertaining article on CelticsStuff Live. He presents his thoughts on the possible Iverson to Celtics talk. This statement sums up his thoughts and mine as well. Other teams may be listening, but honestly, do you really think there is a lot of interest in a 31 year old punk who makes 18 million dollars a year and has constantly put himself ahead of his team and teammates while not being able to deliver anything more than impressive stats on his own resume? What of the proud Celtic tradition of teamwork and selflessness? The Mercury News says that Iverson nixed a trade to the Bobcats. According to the article they were ready to pull the trigger and Iverson said he wouldn't report to them. My question is why would he come to Boston? We certainly aren't a contender at this point. We will be but if we trade our young talent away for Iverson chances are we may never be.
You will find recaps of our win in New York last night in The Herald, The Globe, Worcester Telegram, and Projo. My thoughts on the game are posted in the article below.

Isaiah Wins Round 3 of Worst Coach Contest- Celtics Win in NY
by FLCeltsFan 9:11 AM
December 12, 2006 The Celtics got off to a great start, building a 30 point lead and then held on for a 7 point win on the road against the NY Knicks. On a night when Jared Jeffries returned to the Knicks lineup and when the Celtics were without their 3 centers against Eddy Curry, who has been putting up all star like numbers lately, the Celtics came away with an improbable win on the road.
Pierce came out with a hot hand and finished with 31 points on 11-22 shooting to go with 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Of course he also got his 3 turnovers in. But he made 2 of the biggest plays of the game with a 3 to stem the Knicks comeback and a huge rebound and 2 free throws to seal the game.
But Pierce had help. Once again, Big Al came up big with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. He played decent defense on Curry without fouling out as well. Powe came in and was one of the reasons we built a big lead in the second. His defense was great and in 12 minutes in the first half he had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. But then he played less than 2 minutes in the second half while we were giving away the 30 point lead. I don't know what this kid has to do to get regular minutes. He comes up big every time Doc gives him a chance and then ends up on the bench. Scal hit 3 big 3 pointers and had 2 rebounds and fouled out in the 4th. I really question Doc's game plan when he keeps Scal in the whole time the Knicks were chipping away at the lead, mostly going inside to Curry and Powe and Al are sitting on the bench. Scal did ok, but he isn't an interior defender and he isn't a rebounder. Powe and/or Al should have been playing but Al only came in after Scal fouled out.
Gomes was steady as usual scoring 8 points to go with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. West continued with his shooting woes shooting only 1 for 6 but finished with 6 points 4 rebounds and 6 assists. Rondo came off the bench to play only 15 minutes but he disrupted their offense and brought the kind of energy we have come to expect from him. He finished with 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
After all of the talk about Green needing more playing time, he got only 6 minutes last night and should have gotten more. Tony played good defense but struggled in other areas, throwing away a crucial inbounds pass in the 4th quarter. He finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Telfair had a decent but unspectacular game scoring 8 points with 4 assists and 2 steals.
It wasn't pretty, but it was our second win on the road in a row and we will take it. It is a credit to the team that they didn't give up when the Knicks started to come back and almost erased a 30 point lead. Doc has got to figure out how to beat a zone defense though because it seems to throw us into disarray every time and almost cost us another game.

Leather Ball to Return January 1
Monday, December 11, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 5:56 PM
December 11, 2006 According to ESPN, David Stern has reversed his position on the new synthetic ball and as of January 1, the old style leather balls will be back in use.
At first, he had said that he would not go back to the old ball, but several prominent players including Jason Kidd and Steve Nash have displayed cuts on their hands from the new ball's high friction cover and Stern conceded that with the ball inflicting injuries, a change would have to be made mid season. The official announcement will come out on Tuesday.

Monday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 8:59 AM
December 11, 2006 Much of the news around the league still swirls around Iverson and his imminent trade. Sources say that the trade could come as soon as today or tomorrow. The Celtics are still front and center in trade rumors with the latest being that Philly is asking for West, Ratliff, Telfair and Jefferson for Iverson. Maybe Danny will substitute our first round pick for Big Al as we can't afford to give up a big man at this point. Since the Sixers have said they would rather send him out West, Inside Bay Area has a piece that predicts possible trade scenarios with western conference teams. They contend that an already superior Western Conference would be made even more so by an Iverson trade to the West. We will keep you up to date on anything that happens so stay tuned.
The Herald, Globe, Green Room, and Celtics.com, all have articles on Big Al's break out game against New Jersey and the hopes that it is just the first of many more. A couple things stand out here. First, Al's teammates were finding him in the post. Previously, I could count on one hand the times that Al was fed the ball inside. Second, Al picked up his defense and his game fed off his defensive intensity. Every player should be able to pick up their defense and the team will feed off that defensive intensity. Third, the Nets are not known for their strong play inside. They are a perimeter team and so the true test of Al's ability will be when he faces a team with a strong center and good interior defense. Curry has been playing like an all star the past couple of games so that test may come tonight when we face the Knicks.
CelticsStuff Live had another great show last night with some breaking news as always. If you didn't get to listen last night, be sure to check it out. Their website had this to say about the Iverson trade:
An unnamed source told Celticsstuff Live after the show that the 76ers are looking hard at Sebastian Telfair and Al Jefferson tonight and that they are asking for those two players in addition to Delonte West in a possible deal for Allen Iverson. There is no report on what the Celtics front office may have in mind for a counter offer. This echos what was reported by Shira Springer in the Globe this morning. We were also informed that a surprise team, The Sacramento Kings, are the Celtic’s primary competition in a bid for Iverson. It is said that Philadelphia’s request begins with Francisco Garcia and Mike Bibby in return for their disgruntled All-Star. The Herald has a scouting report on the Knicks game tonight. Jefferson will have a big test of his ability tonight trying to score inside against Eddy Curry. The last time we faced the Knicks, they sent a zone defense against us that totally took us out of the game. Hopefully lots of film has been viewed and Doc has worked on beating the zone as Isaiah will probably try it again since it worked the first time. Join us on Celtics Green for the play by play along with great commentary by Q. I am hoping for big games again from Al and Green and the start of another win streak.

Iverson Trade as Soon as Monday or Tuesday
Sunday, December 10, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:14 PM
December 10, 2006 ESPN is reporting that Philly may trade Iverson as soon as Monday or Tuesday. They are considering several offers and want to make a decision quickly.
The Celtics have the advantage of being able to add Theo Ratliff's $11.7 million contract into the mix, while the Memphis Grizzlies would be one of the few teams able to offer Philadelphia cap relief for next summer through Eddie Jones' expiring $15.7 million contract -- if not for the inconvenient fact that team president Jerry West's hands are tied because of the pending sale of the team, precluding him from making trades.
Dallas also could offer a package starting with two expiring contracts (Jerry Stackhouse and Austin Croshere), as could New Orleans (Desmond Mason and Mark Jackson add up to almost $13 million), while the Charlotte Bobcats are far enough under the salary cap to take back Iverson in a trade in which the salaries would not have to even come close to matching.
Another team that can't be totally dismissed is the New York Knicks, who are in the unique position of being able to take back both Iverson and Chris Webber in a trade. Because the salaries of Iverson and Webber add up to nearly $38 million, the Knicks would have to offer at least $30.4 million worth of contracts back -- a total that could be reached with a package of Steve Francis, Quentin Richardson, Malik Rose and Channing Frye.
And although the Sixers would prefer to trade Iverson to a Western Conference team, they're going to take the best offer that's out there, East or West, even in their own division -- and they're going to do it soon. Stay tuned and we will update you as soon as more news is available.
On another note, just how clutch is Pierce? Very, according to ESPN and Elias. • Paul Pierce hit the game-winning basket at the buzzer for Boston in its win over the Nets. It was the sixth time in his NBA career that Pierce hit the game-winning field goal with less than one second to go in the fourth quarter or overtime. That's two more such baskets than any other NBA player since Pierce entered the league in 1998-99. Vince Carter and Kobe Bryant are next with four over that span.

Sunday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:50 AM
December 10, 2006 The Herald, Globe, and Worcester Telegram all have articles on Pierce's last second game winner and the Celtics win over the Nets. Big Al officially had his coming out party last night. I look for more of the same in the games to come. Although Pierce couldn't hit anything all night, he came up clutch on the last shot. A much needed win for us.
Mark Murphy has a piece that centers on Al Jefferson's performance last night. After being benched for being too meek, Al took it to heard and had his most dominant game yet. Doc is also quoted saying that he likes coaching the guys he has. I agree. I like the players we have.
The Herald Notebook reports on Telfair's growth since coming to Boston and that his talent is beginning to show. I still feel that Rondo is the best PG that we have on the team. He may not want to shoot from outside but he does everything else so well that it doesn't really matter. Also in this article is some nostalgia back to when the Celtics travelled by train.
Scott Souza reports that Big Al is finally living up to his potential. We are seeing him grow in front of our eyes. Could it be that out of necessity he is finally playing more than 15 minutes per game and is growing because of it? I expect to see his maturation continue on the fast track and he will break out this season. Al and Gerald and Perk are the three most untouchable players on the team right now.
In the Globe, Shira quotes Danny saying that Doc is here for the rest of the season. Even if we don't win another game, Doc is going to be our coach. So, the fire Doc chants can stop because for better or worse, Doc isn't going anywhere. Also mentioned in this piece is a possible 4 for 1 trade for Iverson that includes Al, Ratliff, Telfair and West. NOOOOOOO!!!! Any trade that includes Al isn't a good one and actually, any trade for Iverson isn't a good one.
Celtics Pride has an article that presents a case for Green being more valuable than Iverson. I have to agree with this one whole heartedly. Green is going to be an all star many years after Iverson is gone and forgotten.
The Hartford Courant continues the debate over the new ball and has the best quote on Iverson I have read.
Many teams would surely take Iverson, 31, who ranks second in the league in scoring (31.2). Wherever he goes, it better be a winner, or Iverson, who badly wants an NBA title, might become a distraction there, too. Iverson will be no more happy in Boston than he is in Philly and will only drag the Celtics down with his attitude.
The Worcester Telegram reports on the sad state of the Eastern Conference. He also discusses that Tony Allen isn't the same player he was two years ago before his injury and legal troubles. Old friend Marcus Banks is happy in Phoenix.
CelticsStuff Live will be on the air tonight with Peter Stringer and Kim Malo. It should be another great show!! They also have a good podcap of the Nets game. Be sure to check both out!!
We have until tomorrow night to savor our victory in New Jersey. Hopefully we will beat the Knicks and start another win streak. And even more hopefully we won't make the mistake of trading away our future for Iverson.

Just Say No to Iverson...
by FLCeltsFan 10:05 AM
December 10, 2006 The rumors surrounding Iverson have been rampant. The Celtics, Bulls, Mavs, Nuggets, Knicks, Pacers, Warriors, and Wolves have all been linked to trade rumors for the disgruntled star with more rumors surfacing every day.
I have made my thoughts on Iverson very clear. I don't want him. Yes, he is a very good player and may help us this season, but his attitude is going to be poison to this team in the long run. Who would we have to give up to get him? Reports have surfaced that Green in a package would do it. Others say Al Jefferson in a package would do it. Both of those guys are going to be all stars long after Iverson is out of the league. Today's Globe has this to say:
Although Ainge had nothing new to say with regard to speculation that Allen Iverson will soon be a Celtic, a league source said the Celtics would be very interested in a deal as long as it did not involve Gerald Green. The source said one possible scenario was sending Theo Ratliff, Delonte West, Sebastian Telfair, and Al Jefferson to Philadelphia for Iverson. The salary numbers would work. But whatever happens, Rivers wants it to be sooner rather than later. It is good to hear that Green is not available but I am not interested in any deal that includes Jefferson or West either. But even if they would take a package of Scal, Ratliff and a second round draft pick, I still wouldn't want Iverson in Boston. Think back to how poisonous Blount's attitude was and he was a happy camper compared to Iverson.
The Hartford Courant says it very well today:
Many teams would surely take Iverson, 31, who ranks second in the league in scoring (31.2). Wherever he goes, it better be a winner, or Iverson, who badly wants an NBA title, might become a distraction there, too Adding Iverson to our team is not going to make us instantly a contender especially if we give up several of our better young players to get him. We still have some growing to do and Iverson is going to be just as unhappy here as he is in Philly.
Iverson, indeed, gave up. "If you know your leader doesn't care, how are we supposed to play with the guy?" steamed a teammate to his agent.
Iverson may not blame Cheeks for the 76ers' worst record in the Atlantic Division, but there's no question they've got differences that aren't going away. One of them pertains to Iverson's lack of attention to detail, lack of respect for authority and unwillingness to practice hard.
Following a conflict at workout last week, Iverson stormed out of the building. That evening he failed to show for a mandatory team function for corporate sponsors and prime season ticket holders. These quotes show what kind of an attitude that Iverson has. We just don't need that here. If he doesn't like Cheeks, he will hate Doc as well. I just don't see him fitting in here.
When Tommy was asked about the trade rumors he had this reaction: "The Redhead in Needham says 'No Trade'." When Doc was asked about possibly getting AI, his reply was: "I like coaching the guys I coach right now." I am with Doc and Tommy... No trade. I like the guys we have now. We are starting to see dividends from some of them and they are growing from game to game. I don't want to see any of our young players coming back to haunt us long after Iverson is out of the league or on another team because he was so disruptive here.
