Injury Update - Paul and Wally Day to Day
Saturday, December 2, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:08 PM
December 2, 2006 Paul Pierce and Wally Szczerbiak are both listed as "day-to-day" after sustaining injuries in the loss to Toronto. Pierce was hurt on a drive to the basket in the third quarter but he returned to the game afterward although he kept holding his elbow. Wally came down on his ankle on a rebound in the final play of the game. After getting up slowly, he walked off the court without assistance. Pierce has been diagnosed with right elbow bursitis and Szczerbiak suffered a sprained left ankle. If you recall, it was right elbow bursitis that required Pierce to get surgery during the offseason. Both sat out practice here today (as did Kendrick Perkins and his sore left foot), but Pierce, who injured his right elbow in a third quarter fall in Toronto hopes to be practicing tomorrow. Wally is the most in doubt for Monday's game in Chicago.

Another Game... Another Close Loss
by FLCeltsFan 9:18 AM
December 2, 2006 Once again, the Celtics fail to play defense. Once again, the Celtics blow a lead. Once again the Celtics lose. It was our failure to defend once again that sealed the fate of this game.
There were some good individual performances as always. Pierce had 7 assists at the half, doing a great job of finding the open man when he was doubled. He finished with 19 points, 9 assists, and 4 rebounds but he once again turned it over too much for our veteran leader with 3 turnovers.
Gomes just keeps turning in solid performances. He got free under the basket several times to be the recipient of Pierce's assists. He finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Perk is still having trouble moving but did finish with 2 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 18 minutes. Al had another solid game and seems to be much quicker around the basket finishing very well. He had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 1 block. Scal played very well for about 14 of his 17 minutes. He had 5 points and 0 rebounds, but played solid defense on Bosh, which no one else seemed capable of doing. But for the last 3 or 4 minutes he either started pushing and trying to do too much, or he was just tired. Either way, he started making more mistakes than doing good.
Green had a nice game other than for an ill advised airball three. He finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks in only 11 minutes. He is also proving that he can play solid defense. This kid needs more playing time!
Telfair had an average game with 7 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 turnovers. West once again was the primary back up point guard but was a bit off all night. He had 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting but could have done that from the SG position because he had no assists and 4 turnovers. Rondo did get in the game for 2 minutes but when you play a minute here and a minute there, there is no way you can get into the flow of the game.
Powe once again remained on the bench even though we were facing a team with a big front line and we could have used his defense in the paint and his rebounding. I just don't understand this move unless Doc is showcasing certain players for a trade and Powe is being kept under wraps.
Pierce and Wally were both injured in the game. Pierce came down on his elbow and played afterward, but the elbow swelled and will be evaluated today. Wally came down on his ankle on the last play of the game and limped off the court afterwards. The early reports is that it is a sprain and he will also be evaluated today.

Perk to Sit?
Thursday, November 30, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 2:37 PM
November 30, 2006
The crack team over at Perkisabeast.com has an interview with Perk after last night's game. These guys love Perk as much as I do and have a great site for all things Perk. In the interview, Perk says that he may have to sit out several games.
PIAB: How is your foot? Perk: Sore. I haven’t been practicing cause it hurt me a lot, and it’s still sore. So, I think I might sit out for a few games, cause I can’t run on it, and it hurts me to even jump. PIAB: How many games do you think you will sit out? Perk: About two-to-three at the most. You really can’t tell, because for the simple fact man… It’s a pain that’s just gotta go away on its own, and there’s nothing really…You can ice it to make it feel better, and take medicine… But it’s just a pain that’s gotta go away on its own. Some people have it for months…a year or a year and a half, or something like that. I think it will be better for Perk if he sits because plantar fasciitis needs rest to heal. We can push him now in games that we aren't winning anyway and have this stretch into January. You can tell he isn't moving well and has trouble going up for rebounds. Or we can give him rest for 3 or 4 games and let the foot heal and have him back strong when he does come back.
Doc is still saying that Perk is going to play in the games while sitting out practices. Doc pushed Wally too hard at the end of last season when the doctors were saying to limit his minutes, Doc was playing him 40 minutes in games that didn't count. I hope that he doesn't do the same with Perk. The longer Perk plays on the foot while it is hurting so much, the longer it is going to take to heal. While we need Perk since he is the only big who can play right now, it will be much better for Perk and for the team to shut him down for a little while to allow the foot to heal. Besides, maybe, just maybe, Doc will give Powe a chance.

Celtics Lose Lead, Game, and Division Lead
by FLCeltsFan 1:48 PM
November 30, 2006 Last night we lost a game we should have won. The Nets came in on a 6 game losing streak. They were tired from a West coast swing, from playing the night before and flying into Boston on game day. All that should have added up to a win. It appeared that we were on our way to one with a 15 point lead and playing well for the first 3 quarters.
Then a funny thing happened on the way to the end of the game, we stopped thinking and we stopped playing aggressively. People can talk all they want about us being a young team, but it wasn't the kids who lost last night's game. It was the coach and the vets who lost it. Pierce taking a ridiculous 3 with 2 Nets in his face. Doc telling the team we don't need a 3 with 17 seconds left in the game and down 3. Wally getting the ball behind the 3 point line, down 3, with just seconds to go and dribbling toward the basket. West playing point guard and slowing the tempo to where the Nets caught their breath and were able to come back. Doc putting Perk and Al on the court when we needed a 3 giving the Nets a chance to double team our 2 players expected to take the 3. Why wasn't Green on the court? Or even Scal who already hit 2 3's in the quarter.
As for our youth, they performed very well. Gomes once again does whatever it takes to win the game. He finished with 5 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Telfair played very well with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal. He ran the team very well, driving and kicking out to the open man. Al had a great game last night, showing off the post moves that we have been waiting to see. He finished with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Perk was hampered by his painful foot and clearly wasn't moving well but he finished with 3 rebounds and 5 blocks. Green played very good defense and finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. No, the kids weren't the problem.
We finished the game with 14 turn overs. It wasn't our youth there, either. Wally had 4, Pierce had 3 and Scal had 1. So of 14 turn overs, our veterans had 8 of them. That left 6 split between the rest of the young players on the team. It isn't just this game either, because Pierce and Wally lead the team in turnovers. These usually happen when they try to force things and do too much instead of trusting their young teammates who so far have proved to be fairly trustworthy.
Doc is not improving. His decision to sit Rondo is not a good one. Rondo needs to play. He brings defensive intensity we need, he brings energy we need, and he can push the tempo in the game, which we need since we are very short on big men. Rondo should have played last night. If we had continued to push the tempo last night and took the ball to the basket instead of falling into a half court, I don't believe we would have let the Nets come back. Also, with a shortage of big men, why is Powe sitting on the bench? When he got a chance to play, he proved that he can play. He changed the pace of the game with his energy and defense and continually got inside position for rebounds and put backs. So why isn't Doc playing him? With Perk saying that he expects to sit out a few games, Doc should play him, but that doesn't mean he will.
It was good news and bad news last night. We played our best basketball for 3 quarters. Then we let up and allowed the Nets to erase the lead and win the game. Our young players showed some good things out there. Al, Telfair, Gomes and Green all played very well. Perk even played good considering the pain that he was in and that was limiting his mobility. But the failure to execute at the end was on Doc and our two "stars."

Wednesday's Odds and Ends - It's Game Day!
Wednesday, November 29, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:31 AM
November 29, 2006 It's game day finally. I know the team needs these breaks to practice and heal, but they sure do seem long for me. I always worry about these breaks, though. Often they don't play as well after they have had 2 or 3 days off. Wally says it breaks their rhythm and that may be true. The Nets are on a 6 games losing streak and will be coming in desperate for a win. But, they are also coming in tired after a long west coast trip and playing last night. We should be able to run them and if we commit to playing defense from the beginning should be able to take control of the game early as being tired, their jump shots may be flat and we will need to keep them outside. Having Perk and Powe in the center would certaingly help. As I anxiously wait for the game tonight, here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today.
The best article this morning was in the Nashua Telegraph.
What can Rivers possibly do to make the fans happy, short of calling more timeouts to allow for more appearances from the vapid new dance team, a collection of fine-looking young ladies whose dance routines are, truly, routine?
He should just play the kids. Let Perkins and Jefferson get all the minutes 12 fouls will allow. So far Green is getting roughly 10 minutes a game. Why not double it?
Play Delonte West, but keep Scalabrine and Tony Allen on the pine. Why Ainge chose to exercise the team option on the contract of Allen, the dribble-challenged guard, is another mystery.
Rivers may not be the Celtics’ long-term answer as coach. His substitution patterns, if you can find a pattern, continue to baffle. But look what he has to work with and you begin to understand why it seems like a game-by-game experiment.
But if the future of the team is Jefferson, Perkins, Green, Telfair, Gomes and Rajon Rondo, play them as much as possible because Celtics fans might be patient with them. They have no patience or desire to watch the Brian Scalabrines of the world.
Amen to that... Doc needs to play the kids. I have a feeling that the fans would be a lot more patient if we see Perk, Al, Powe, Rondo and Green out there playing good minutes instead of Pierce playing 45 minutes and leading the team (and possibly the league)in turnovers. Scal may do the little things and he really isn't as bad as he was last season, but I think a lot of the frustration with playing Scal comes from the fact that he isn't the future of this club. Play Powe. Play Al. Let Perk use up his 6 fouls instead of sitting him for the rest of the game with 4. Fans want to see our kids develop and they aren't going to with 10 minutes a game. Playing Pierce 45 minutes may win us a game but it isn't going to win us a championship. Playing Green some of those minutes just might. But we may have to change coaches before that message gets across.
The Herald reports that Doc has replaced Rondo with West in the PG rotation for now. Rondo has the ability to take over a game and change the pace with his energy and defense. He may not take jumpers, but he has a great knack for getting to the basket. If Doc truly wants to run, Rondo should remain in the PG rotation. It is good news that West is feeling healthy though, because he does good things when he is.
The Globe Notebook begins by discussing tonight's opponent. The Nets are on a 6 game losing streak and hopefully will wait until after tonight to get back on track. Allan Ray took the day off to welcome his first child and is anxiously awaiting to see if he will be on the team after Friday. If he is, the remainder of his contract will be guaranteed. Danny seems to like him a lot, but with the problems we are having with all of our centers being injured, it might be best to cut him and look for another center on a 10 day contract. Or, Doc could try to play Powe more. But that would be the smart thing to do and we are talking about Doc here.
Hoopsworld looks at the fact that in spite of having a 5-8 record, the Celtics are leading the Atlantic division. If the Celtics can get it together and play the way they are capable of, we might have a chance to make some noise since most of the teams in the Atlantic are struggling out of the gate as well.
Celtics Pride asks the question as to whether it is better to look for a veteran big man now or try to tank and go for Oden. I personally think it would be best to stick with the core of young players we have now and if we can get a veteran who could help without giving up our core, do that. I just don't see any way we will get Oden, even if we have the worst record this season. We have never had good luck with the lottery. Play the kids we have now and give them a chance to develop quicker. That is our best strategy. Playing them a few minutes here and there isn't getting the job done.
The Patriot Ledger reports that Scal is just looking for respect from his teammates. Scal hasn't been playing that poorly. He does set good screens. But the problem with Scal getting minutes is that when he does, Al and Powe aren't. Scal is good in the locker room. He works hard. He is a good teammate. But he isn't part of our future.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal quotes the Grizzlies' owner as saying that Gasol is definitely not available. He may be doing the same thing Ainge did when he strongly denied that he was going to trade Antoine just a couple weeks before he was traded the first time. Or, he may truly not be interested in trading him and Vescey is wrong once again.
With a little help from Shakespeare, CelticsStuff Live ponders the reasons for our come from behind win over the Bucks. Why were the Celtics able to come back? We’ve all heard the phrase: “defense rules” and have always associated that element of play with championship teams. Oddly enough, most observers will credit pride and desire, not talent and inherent skill that actually cause the manifestation of the concept. Also discussed is the difference the refs can make in a game. Another element of the team’s defensive energy has to come from the zebras. When our young players, particularly the bigs; Perkins and Jefferson get two early fouls, you can concede the lane for the rest of the game. For better or worse, they know that they are being judged, not on their effort, so much as their ability to stay out of foul trouble.
When trying to determine if the Celtics can keep up this defensive pressure, as the season and their maturity as a team moves forward, the way the referees call the game is the big wild card. The refs have been pretty inconsistent and infuriating at times. They have been given more authority and have been wielding it. Games don't seem to have much flow with all of the calls. Travelling, ticky tack fouls, etc have really disrupted the flow of games. They said that they were cutting out the arguing to make the game move along more quickly, but then they call all these ticky tack fouls that have the opposite effect. And, they aren't consistent. They give stars one treatment and others another. Also in many cases they don't call it evenly on both ends of the floor. Anyway, enough of that, join us on Celtics Green for tonight's play by play of the game with insight from Q and the rest of the Greeniacs.

Rondo Out - West In - For Now
Tuesday, November 28, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 4:16 PM
November 28, 2006 According to an article on Celtics.com, Rondo is out of the PG lineup for now and Delonte is back in the PG lineup.
Coach Doc Rivers explained that Rondo is out of the point guard mix for now because he hasn't yet proved to be an offensive threat. Rivers did say that Rondo will be more utilized in certain games for his defensive and trapping abilities, but for now, the backup role belongs to West.
Delonte is feeling healthy for the first time this season and we should be seeing more of the Delonte of last year. He has also been working on his shot and hopefully the shots that haven't been falling will start falling for him.
As for some struggles with his shot in recent games, West is confident better days are ahead, and he spends 15-20 minutes after practice working on his shot with the coaching staff. Today he was coming off imaginary screens, set courtesy of a plastic trash barrel, catching a shooting baseline and elbow jumpers from about 20 feet. "It's early in the season," said West. "I know my shots going to fall, I've just got to keep shooting." I think it is a mistake to put Rondo on the shelf because he doesn't look for his own offense. He changes the game when he comes in. His energy and defense are so good that he really doesn't have to shoot to make a difference and change the whole complexion of a game. He is very good at getting to the basket and doesn't need a jump shot to score. Delonte is a valuable player but I would rather see him get minutes at the 2 and Rondo back up the PG spot.

Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:57 AM
November 28, 2006 Celtics are in a 2 way tie with the Nets for the Titanic division lead, with a woeful record of 5-8. The Nets play tonight which will break the tie one way or the other. If the Nets lose, we will be alone atop the division. Pretty scary. Actually it is pretty scary that we are anywhere near the top of the division with a losing record. Amid reports of a good practice yesterday and Perk still resting his sore foot, we can only hope to play well tomorrow and beat New Jersey to start another winning streak. In the meantime, here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
Mark Murphy reports that the Celtics aren't impressed with leading the division. Wally says that standings are the worst thing to pay attention to this time of the year and Pierce admits that he would rather be playing well than in first place. I have to agree with both of them. One positive about it is that we aren't completely left behind in the East. We got off to a poor start, but then so again did the rest of the East so there is hope that we can turn it around and make the playoffs.
In the Celtics Notebook, Doc says that he senses a disconnect between the fans and the players and coaches. He sees it as a result of the bloated salaries that players get these days. The article also mentions that the Celtics had a good practice yesterday with mostly healthy players. Pierce has his wrist wrapped but it is nothing serious. Perk is resting his sore foot but is expected to play on Wednesday.
Peter May comments on the sad state of the Eastern Conference. Not just the Celtics are struggling but almost every team in the East. While only 3 teams in the East have winning records, only 3 teams in the West have losing records. The Celtics benefit from an easy early schedule in that they don't start their first West coast trip until December 25 and by that time let's hope they have begun to gel and will have a better trip than the other Eastern teams that have ventured out west so far.
The Globe Notebook starts with Perk sitting out practices to rest his plantar fasciitis and expecting to play in Wednesday's game. Other than Perk, the rest of the active players had a good practice. Telfair drew praise from the Bucks' coach for his inspired play in the second half of Saturday's game. The Nets are coming off that West coast trip and are playing tonight at home which may give us an advantage against them tomorrow night if we run and play decent defense, we should have a chance to win.
Celtics Blog has a developmental check on Perk. It is no secret that Perk is my favorite player. I just love his work ethic and intensity. Here is Jeff's conclusion:
In just about every category, he’s improved his game. In some cases, he’s improved dramatically. He was the 27th pick of the 2003 draft and played only a handful of minutes his first year. Now he’s a starting NBA center with excellent rebounding ability and the potential to be a defensive force. If he can move his feet and make the right rotations on defense, he’ll stay out of foul trouble and stay on the floor, where he will help this team win ballgames. I think with a little more playing time, Perk is going to figure it out and be the dominant force we need in the center. He works too hard not to.
Bill Reynolds tells us that the team is already feeling the heat of their slow start. Many fans expect a lot more out of this team, but I still think that patience is what is needed most. This team shows flashes of what they can be and that is exciting. They are going to put it together and then we will be glad we waited because they will be very good for years to come.
Scott Souza has more on the Celtics good practice yesterday. Doc feels that the poor practices along with the injuries are the reason for the big losses last week. Wally has another opinion, though.
"I have often said that I like it when we get into a routine when we play every other day because then you get in a rhythm," he said. "We got into a situation where we won three in a row, then we broke our rhythm with the three days off." If Wally is right, we should expect another let down on Wednesday. I am hoping that Doc is right and we come out strong and beat the Nets.
Bill Doyle has the surprising information that Doc actually doesn't like small ball. I also don't care for small ball except in short spurts to shake up a game. We need to have post players and rebounders in there. Also mentioned in this article is Telfair's emergence and Gerald Green as our 3 point specialist.
In some exciting news, Red's Army is now featuring podcasts on their site. Check out the reason why we shouldn't get excited about Gasol and some answers to questions about KG and Danny's recruiting trip.

The Debate: Play Vets or the Young Players?
by FLCeltsFan 9:15 AM
November 28, 2006 The debate over whether to win now or develop our young players has been going on ever since Danny started drafting high school players with Perk in the 2003 draft. Perk got all of 19 minutes his first season, which gave him time to work on his strength and conditioning. Since that first season, he has gotten 9 minutes per game and 19 minutes per game, with players like a very underwhelming Mark Blount and Raef LaFrentz getting playing time ahead of him. I can't help but think that if he was given more playing time, he would be a much better center today. As it is, he has steadily improved and continues to improve game to game. But who knows what he would be doing now if he had been given more time all along. I wouldn't hesitate to wager that if we had Ratliff and Kandi healthy, Perk still would be getting 19 or less minutes per game.
It isn't just Perk, either. Gomes didn't get a chance to play until the 47th game of the season last year and then he moved into the starting lineup and hasn't left it. Could we have won a lot more games if Gomes had been given a chance earlier? Why wasn't he playing? Would he be even better if he was given minutes earlier? I guess we will never know. And this year we have a player who promises to be dominant in the post in Leon Powe. But even after dominating in the two games he did get to play in, he has been on the bench with only cameo appearances. With the injuries to all of the other big men, it would seem that playing Powe makes sense. Doc says he doesn't get the offensive sets. But when he got a chance to play, he didn't show any signs of not getting it. So his being kept on the bench continues to be a puzzle, especially since he brings everything to the game that this team needs so much. He is also a better player than Scal, even as a rookie, who is getting minutes ahead of him. I have read too much about Powe's work ethic to believe that he isn't working hard enough to earn minutes.
Rondo is a very exciting young player. He has all the tools it takes to be a dominating point guard in this league. He has speed, instincts, and an already developed defensive mindset. But, he needs minutes to bring that game from the college mindset to the NBA mindset. 19 seconds playing time in a game isn't going to do it. As it is, he makes very few mistakes but the ones he does, he learns from and chances are, we won't see him make the same mistake twice. Doc needs to play him and we will reap the benefits by the end of the season. Gerald Green is getting more minutes lately, but he too could have improved a lot quicker with a few more minutes playing time.
Derrenmatts has a good post on this over on Celtics Green.
We have so many young players who are talented basketball players, but yet have been lagging in the developmental department. Its not because they aren't as good as we think they can be; its because they're not being given the playing time to assimilate the speed and quick rhythm of the NBA, or get comfortable in their roles.
If you look around the league at guys who were drafted during the time our players were drafted, who are also about the same potential level; they are much more advanced than our guys in the same amount of time they've been in the NBA. And the difference is they've gotten the playing time to adjust to the NBA game and learn from their mistakes.
Take JR Smith for example. He's not a big time talent, but he's currently a big time contributor in Denver's offense. He's helping the Nuggets reach the upper echelon in the NBA. Is he that much better than any of our young wing players? No, he's not. But he was given a lot of playing time in his 1st two years in the league, whether he was playing well or not and now in his 3rd year, he's finally putting it all together.
Same with Monta Ellis and Andres Biedrins. Under Don Nelson, these guys have been given the green light to play their games and they have rewarded him with very impressive numbers for such young guys. They were allowed to develop their games with a lot of playing time and that's the quickest way to get the nervousness out of young players.
Any one of these guys, if they were on our team, would be buried on the bench and given only 6 minutes of playing time for the 1st few years of their careers. Even a guy like Josh Smith would be sidelined, wasting away his vast talents and potential. Maybe even Dwight Howard or Emeka Okafor would be far behind the level they are playing at now if they were on our team.
If Gerald Green were on the Warriors, he'd be pushing Jason Richardson. If Leon Powe or Al Jefferson were with the Lakers, they'd be the talk of the town.
Its time to give our young players the playing time they need. We are 4 - 8 right now and I'd rather have that record with Gerald and Jefferson playing a ton of minutes and Telfair and Rajon running the show. At least that way, they'll be more advanced next year and ready to take on much bigger roles and responsibilities. I agree that I would rather have the record we have now with Perk, Rajon, Al, and Green getting more minutes and developing their games. We would be a lot closer to being a contender if they were.
I have to think that Doc is caught between a rock and a hard place in that playing the kids more minutes may result in more losses. And more losses means more boos by the fans and more calls for his job. But, playing Pierce 45 minutes per game and playing Scal ahead of Powe is only making the development of this team into a contender take twice as long. We have talented young players. Fans need to show patience as these players grow together and learn how to win as a team. I say roll the dice with our young players and let them play. We may lose a few more games now but by the end of the season, we will start seeing dividends that will extend much longer into the future than Scal's contract and possibly the contract of any player that we would bring in via trade.

Monday Practice Update
Monday, November 27, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 3:44 PM
November 27, 2006 The Herald reports that unlike the last 3 day layoff, Doc had everyone except Perk, Kandi and Ratliff available for practice today. Perk is expected to practice tomorrow in preparation for the Wednesday game but was resting his plantar fasciitis today.
Pierce had his left wrist taped because of a slight sprain from Saturday's game. Neither he nor Rivers seemed too concerned about it so it probably is just sore and nothing serious.
Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair were the last players off the court as both stayed late to work on their outside shots. Rondo wasn't mentioned in the article so I imagine he is feeling better after suffering from flu like symptoms during the last two games. Hopefully the practices were spirited and players are playing hard and working on defense because it is very clear that when we commmit to defense, we win. And when we don't commit to defense, we lose.

Monday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:15 AM
November 27, 2006 Celtics resume practice today after a day off and hopefully will have all of the active players healthy enough to practice. The buzz around the web this morning has to do with the rumors about Danny going after Gasol. He would certainly be a nice addition to the team, especially if we could get him for a couple of young guys, Ratliff's soon to expire contract and some draft picks. I was both pleased and totally amazed to see that we are in a 3 way tie for the lead in the Atlantic division with just a 5 and 8 record. New Jersey has lost 5 in a row, Philly lost their last game and Boston won their last game putting us in the 3 way tie. Very interesting.... We seem to do better when we don't play than when we do. Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
In the Herald Notebook, Bulpett remarks on the fact that Telfair took over and led the team to the comeback win in Milwaukee. It sure would be nice to have a PG who can direct the team in crunch time. I think Rondo is capable of that as well and I think both PGs are just going to continue to get better. Also in the article is the fact that Gomes has become expert at quietly great performances. He is just steady and does many things well and very rarely makes mistakes. Doc and Danny contribute our poor performances last week to injuries and the lack of practice with the whole team. We will see this week since we have 2 days of practice before Wednesday's game with the Nets.
The Globe Notebook reports that the Celtics are just trying to put together longer stretches of good play than the stretches of bad play. We have been inconsistent so far but I think that this team is going to eventually put it all together and be more consistent.
"What I tell the guys is that we need to play solid defense every night regardless," said Pierce. "That's going to help us develop consistency on a night-in, night-out basis when our shots aren't falling. We've got to be more consistent on defense and keep our turnovers down. If we can do those two things, it gives us the best chance of winning every night.
"Teams that have been together for a while with veterans have more consistent stretches. When you have a lot of new guys and young guys, you're going to have a lot of good and bad stretches. I see a couple of things in this quote from Pierce. First of all, he is right. Defense is what is going to win games. We have to make an effort to play tough in your face defense for 48 minutes each game. Second, Pierce needs to work on the turnovers himself since he is the biggest culprit when it comes to turning the ball over, with Wally a close second. It isn't the kids turning the ball over, it is the vets. Third, the key is chemistry. This team will win when they have been together for a period and have developed that kind of chemistry where they know each other and trust each other. I believe they will reach that point this season unless Danny disrupts everything with another trade mid season.
Speaking of a mid season trade, the buzz around the net is all about the Grizzlies having a fire sale and Danny trying to get in on the ground floor to snap up Gasol. We have a lot of bargaining chips and it seems that Danny should be able to put together a good package to get him. CelticsBlog has a proposal on how the Celtics can get Gasol. SouthCoast Today says that getting Gasol gives the Celtics something to dream about and feels that the draft picks we have been stockpiling may be our best bargaining chip. Memphis Commercial Appeal gives more details about the state of the Grizzlies and why they are trying to clear out some of their players. It is certain that the Celtics won't be the only bidders for Gasol. But, there can be no more than rumors until the ownership of the Grizzlies is settled and that won't be until sometime in December.
And on a nice note, Celtics.com is reporting that, Kandi has been keeping himself busy during his time on the inactive list. He celebrated the holidays by visiting the Children's Hospital and serving Thanksgiving dinners to the homeless. He seems to be a nice guy and was really trying on the court before his injury. I think signing him was a good choice.

Sunday Odds and Ends
Sunday, November 26, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 11:02 AM
November 26, 2006 It is a happy Sunday after the Celtics win last night. Danny is defending Doc, Vescey is predicting a trade for Gasol, and there is once again hope among Celtics fans. The team showed heart last night and came from behind to win convincingly and all is well with the world. We now have 3 days off until we face the Nets to savor the win. In the meantime, here is what is going on in the Celtics Nation today.
Bulpett reports that Danny is standing behind Doc and he feels the problem is more the players than the coach. He feels that the players are not playing up to their individual capabilities. He also says that he is still checking the market for a trade but won't rush into anything if it isn't an upgrade for the future. This could fit with Vescey's report today that his sources are reporting that Danny is close to bringing Gasol to Boston.
Shira also reports that Danny is standing behind his coach. She also discusses Green's improvement behind the arc and his desire to become a defensive force for the team.
The Herald and Projo both have reports on the Celtics win last night. Doc, the players and the reporters all realize that it is defense that keyed the win.
“It’s all about our defense,” said Rivers. “When we play defense, we score a lot of points. Now if they would only remember that and keep doing it.
Scott Souza discusses the fact that Doc is on the hot seat, but likely to finish the year in spite of it. If the Celtics start winning consistently then the calls for Doc's job would go away. The question is, will they win consistently with Doc as the coach? I point to the failure to play Powe, even though he has proved that he can play, as one of Doc's biggest mistakes. We could use his rebounding and toughness inside and he is twice the player Scal is and yet Doc continues to play Scal and sits Powe. But if Doc can get them to play defense on a regular basis, this team is capable of a win streak.
Finally, the Herald Notebook, reports that Pierce cleared up his position on Doc. His silence after the NY game was interpreted as condemning Doc but he said that isn't the case at all. Also in the article, Doc says that it is no fun being booed, but that he understands it. Bulpett also reports in this article that Al got better as the game went on, scoring all 10 of his points in the 4th quarter. Tony Allen is struggling. Whether it is because he is pushing and trying too hard or distracted by his legal problems, everyone is hoping he can figure it out and get back to where he was at the end of last season.

Celtics Rally Behind Pierce to Beat the Bucks
by FLCeltsFan 10:32 AM
November 26, 2006 It started out like another blowout and another lackluster performance by the Celtics. But a funny thing happened on the way to the Bucks victory... The Celtics found some heart... and some defense. The green team rallied from as many as 16 down to take control in the third quarter and never look back. It started with the Celtics finally putting out some effort on defense, which got the rest of their game going.
Apparently the league expected it to be the other way around because when I went to the NBA.com box score this morning, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. They had the Bucks beating the Celtics 111-98 instead of the other way around. The whole box score is messed up with Pierce having 28 points instead of his 34. Very bizarre. I thought maybe I had been dreaming about the win until I went to the Yahoo box score and all was well again. The Celtics really did beat the Bucks 111-98.
Pierce led the team all the way around in the come from behind win. He scored 34 points on 9 of 15 shooting to go with 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. His 5 turnovers came mostly in the first half. Wally chipped in with 21 points. Telfair had another solid game with 12 points and 8 assists.
Our bigs supplied defense in the center during the run and had solid games. In spite of playing in pain, Perk had 5 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks and played good defense on Bogut to help key the second half run. Gomes contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds. Al came alive in the 4th period with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Doc once again played Scal who did get 4 rebounds, but I can't help but think that his minutes would be much better used by playing Powe who is a much better player.
The win was a team effort and shows what this team is capable of when they dig in and play team and individual defense. It was our defense that keyed the rally. When we commit to playing defense, good things happen on both ends of the court. It was a much needed win on the road. It was the second of back to back games and we hadn't had success in Milwaukee since 1995 and so it was really an unexpected win.
We now off until Wednesday with time for the team to get in some practices and for Perk's foot, Wally's glute muscle and West's foot to heal. This should be a good thing, but it makes me uneasy because the last time we had off from Saturday until Wednesday we got beat by Charlotte and NY in blow outs. Hopefully this won't be the case this time as we face the Nets on Wednesday and will need to play well to beat them. [Box Score] [Recap] [Play by Play] Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!

Pau Gasol a Celtic?
by FLCeltsFan 10:25 AM
November 26, 2006 Keep in mind that this comes from Peter Vescey, but he seems to think that the Celtics are close to making a deal for the Grizzlies' Pau Gasol. He mentions this in his column today:
No wonder, an enlightened source revealed to Hoop du Jour, Ainge has offered anybody and everybody for Pau Gasol and anyone else the Grizzlies want to discard in the deal to make it happen.
Again, until then, the Celtics, probably the Grizzlies, too, are on their own, while Rivers and Fratello coach from weakness. Should Ainge start to warm up in the bullpen (a la Gregg Popovich replacing Bob Hill when Tim Duncan joined forces with David Robinson), I suspect Boston may be on the brink of acquiring Gasol. Vescey did announce a week before the trade to bring Walker back to Boston that Danny was going to do so. He also has been equally wrong about other things but it is worth thinking about.
