Three in a Row!!!!!
Saturday, November 18, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 11:55 PM
November 19, 2006 The Celtics accomplished something tonight that they were unable to do all of last year. They won their third game in a row, beating the Knicks 122-118 in Madison Square Garden. This is the first time since April 2005 that we have won 3 in a row. It is so good to have that monkey off of our backs. In a game that was up and down and was played in runs and that included 113 free throw attempts, the Celtics built a 20 point lead and then let the Knicks come all the way back to take the lead. But, they held on to win, shooting free throws down the stretch.

Once again, we had many positive individual performances. Starting with Pierce who filled up the stat line with 39 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. More importantly, he is doing it within the team game and not forcing things. Wally scored 20 points but fouled out for the first time in 5 years.

Gomes has been playing some incredible ball lately. Tonight he had 22 points on 6 of 10 shooting to go with 14 rebounds. West played some good defense and even though his shot wasn't going, he hustled and played hard.
Our PG play was solid from both Telfair and Rondo. Telfair had 19 points to go with 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Rondo added 5 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Perk did a great job of keeping Curry in check and finished with 8 rebounds and 4 blocks and controlled the paint when he was in the game.
We had 4 players in double figures in Pierce (39), Gomes (22), Wally (20) and Telfair (19). Gomes is developing into that 3rd consistent scorer behind Pierce and Wally. Telfair has also been a consistent scorer for us. And we know that it is just a matter of time before West emerges as a consistent scorer as well. But the best part of this game was that when New York came back, we didn't fold and kept fighting and came away with the win in a close game. It is learning to close out a close game that is significant here. This win moves us from last in the Atlantic to 3rd, only half a game behind Philly and 1.5 games behind New Jersey.

Celtics Romp Over Trailblazers 118-90
Friday, November 17, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 11:02 PM
November 18, 2006 The Celtics won their second game in a row, beating the Blazers easily. For the second game Doc got all of his players into the game, including Allen Ray. It seems that the Celtics are gaining confidence and are discovering that defense wins games.

Gomes played very well even though it doesn't show in the box score. It was his job to contain Zach Randolph and that took up a lot of his energy. His shot wasn't falling, but he contributed considerably on defense. He got some help defending in the paint from Perk and Powe, both having very good games. Perk finished with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks. Powe finished with 9 points 6 rebounds and 1 block. The highlight of the the game for me was Powe's 2 dribble dunk from the top of the key. I am sure I will see it on the Top 10 Plays of the Day.

Pierce played within the team for the second game in a row and finished with 29 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Wally chipped in with 19 points and 3 rebounds. Telfair had 15 points and 7 assists. Rondo was once again solid with 8 points, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. His defense, as always, was great.

Gerald Green and Delonte West were playing on a small ball team in the 4th that played with great energy. West had a break out game shooting 7 for 12 and finishing with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks. He seemed to be everywhere. Hopefully he will be the third scoring option that we have been needing. Green came in and scored 9 points to go with 3 assists and 3 rebounds. Scal had a good game and again, it doesn't show in the box score, but he was active on defense and played well.

Since this was the first of back to back games, it was very good that the second team played so well and the starters got to sit out the 4th quarter. Things are coming together. The team is playing defense and even with Al, Ratliff and Kandi out, they are defending in the paint and playing very well. We can only get better when Al comes back. He is planning on practicing on Monday, which is very good news. Excellent game tonight. Hopefully we can build on it and win 3 in a row.

The Door is Wide Open
by FLCeltsFan 10:54 PM
November 17, 2006 In spite of the Celtics standing last in the Atlantic Division with a 3-6 record, the door is wide open in the Eastern Conference. Cleveland and Orlando have gotten off to a good start with 7 and 6 wins respectively. Both of these teams should continue to play well. LeBron won't settle for less from his team and Orlando has a talented young team and Howard should help them to continue winning. However, an injury to either star could plummet these teams quickly since they depend very heavily on their stars. Everyone else is having their own struggles and leaving the door open for the Celtics to make a move. Philadelphia, NY, Atlanta and Indiana all have 4 wins. And you know that Philadelphia will slip eventually as they already have a problem with Webber requesting a trade. Iverson can't hold up for the entire season playing the way he has to begin the season, shouldering the entire load for the team. New York will eventually self destruct... for no other reason than they are the Knicks and Isaiah is their coach. I don't expect Atlanta to continue playing well over the season. Indiana doesn't seem to have the heart to win. O'Neal and Carlisle having heated discussions, players who aren't living up to expectations, this team is heading for a rebuild if ever one was. Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Washington and Miami all have 3 wins. While this is the tier that I expect to eventually rise to the top, right now, they are right there with the Celtics. All of these teams have strong rosters and should pull away, but currently, because of injuries and other problems, they are struggling, leaving the door open for the Celtics to stay with them. So, in spite of a 3-6 start, the Celtics are still right in the middle of the mix in the Eastern Conference. Add this to the fact that we have seen some improvement in each of the Celtics games so far. We are also seeing improvement in individual performances including Perk, Powe, Green, Telfair, Rondo, and West. Al was also improving and becoming that player that we always knew he could be, and I expect him to pick up right where he left off when he comes back to the team. And the biggest reason for hope is that they seem to have discovered defense. I fully expect the team to continue to improve, in spite of having Doc as a coach. We are not far behind the pack right now. Some of the teams that got off to a good start will slow down. Others, like the Celtics are going to pull it together and play strong down the stretch. The door is wide open for the Celtics to make a run. Now if they can just win 3 in a row, we will take a huge step forward.

Kandi out 2-4 weeks
by FLCeltsFan 7:28 PM
November 17, 2006 The Herald reports that the MRI showed a small tear in an abdominal muscle. He will be out 2-4 weeks. Leon Powe will be Perk's back up at center until Al can come back. Scal and Gomes are also in the mix of bigs available. Doc jokingly said that Perk would have to go 48 minutes. Somehow, if Perk stays out of foul trouble, I can see Doc doing that.
Speaking of Al, he was seen behind Dickerson tonight working with Brian Doo. Hopefully he will be back closer to the 3 weeks than the 6 weeks that they originally gave as recovery time.

Friday's Odd's and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 8:18 AM
November 17, 2006 Celtics have a very good chance to put together two good games in a row tonight. This would be a big step toward confidence and consistency. I'm ready, I just hope the team is. In the meantime, here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
Steve Bulpett has a piece on Telfair and his attitude as he approaches tonight's game against his former teammates. Good for him that he didn't say anything bad about the organization to give them fodder for a grudge match. Telfair has improved over the past couple of games and his defense is improving as well. I still think that Rondo is the better PG but both are playing very well. I do expect Rondo to move into the starting lineup eventually.
The Celtics Notebook begins with a tongue in cheek piece that correlates Perk's defense of his coach with increased playing time and plays being called for him inside. I know that Perk's defense of his coach came from the heart because that's the kind of kid he is. His increased playing time and his larger part in the game plan is the result of his improved play and ability to avoid fouls. I love Perk! Also mentioned in this article is the fact that Gerald has passed Tony on the depth chart. Doc gives better shooting and fewer turnovers as reasons for the move.
The Globe Notebook begins with the news that Kandi probably won't be available for tonight's game. This puts even more pressure on Perk to stay out of foul trouble. I think the big guy is up to the challenge.
Celtics.com has an article that discusses the same topics: Bassy is ready to face his former team and he won't be baited into saying anything bad about them. Kandi is out with an injury. Green is moving ahead of Tony.
Celtics17 discusses the merits of exploring a trade for Pierce at this time. The first 6 games, I would have agreed 100% after watching Pierce turn the ball over at an alarming rate, taking bad shots and seeming to be oblivious to the rest of the team. But in the Indy game, he played team ball. I was very surprised to see that he had scored 32 points in that game because they were all within team play and not Pierce against the world. If he can continue to play like this, he will be very valuable to the team. The key is in the if because if he returns to the old no defense do it on my own Pierce, he hurts the team more than he helps it.
Celtics Nation has the Celtics vying for the privelege of taking Gred Oden in next year's draft. I still expect this team to turn it around this season and therefore don't expect to be in the lottery. Tanking never got the Celtics anything and even if we have the worst record in the league, it doesn't guarantee that we would get the #1 pick. The author suggests that Red is pulling the strings to get the Celtics into the lottery. I couldn't agree less. Red was all about winning and he would never settle for losing, even if the prize is Oden. This team is going to finish strong and make the playoffs this season. Yes, Oden is going to be a dominant player in this league and whatever team gets him will be a force. But it won't be worth a tank job because we all know how the last one worked out.
I am ready to watch the Celtics take that next step tonight as they put together two good games in a row. Join us on Celtics Green for the play by play and for Q's ever insightful commentary. Let's hope the team remembers that defense wins games and picks up where they left off on Wednesday.

Kandi Leaves Practice Early
Thursday, November 16, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 5:13 PM
November 16, 2006
This just in from Steve Bulpett in the Herald: The Celtic center ranks are thinning by the day. With Theo Ratliff already out (bulging disc) and not expected back any time soon, Michael Olowokandi left practice today for an MRI. He’s so far been diagnosed with a strained abdominal muscle.
Olowokandi will be examined again Friday, but the Celtics aren’t expecting him to be available against Portland that night.
That would leave the foul-prone Kendrick Perkins as the OTCA (only true center available). The fact he’s been able to control his fouls better lately is a ray of comfort for the Celts as they head into a weekend back-to-back (at New York Saturday, as well). [More] source:Boston Herald

Thursday's Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:46 AM
November 16, 2006 The Celtics put it all together last night and finally played defense along with hitting their shots. They all played team ball and they came out with a win. Now the trick will be to build some consistency. Last season we would come out like this one game and then slip back the next so the test will be to see how they play on Friday. I am expecting a win. Here is what is going on around a very happy Celtics Nation today.
The Herald reports that Larry Bird is never very comfortable with the way Boston fans still fawn all over him. Last night when the Jumbotron focused on him, the crowd lapsed into the Larry, Larry chant until he stood to acknowledge them.
Steve Bulpett acknowledges that good team defense helped to put the Pacers away. Perk set the tone after the last loss when he challenged his teammates to play defense and take the responsibility to up their intensity. They responded and played solid defense as a team for 48 minutes, with Perk showing the way. I love Perk. He is playing very solid now and he is becoming a leader on this team, challenging his teammates and setting an example himself.
In the Celtics Notebook, a very positive Pierce is still looking to make the playoffs. I agree with him that we still have a very good chance to do so. We had a slow start but this team is talented and will pull together and finish strong. Doc played all 12 players last night and Scal was the only one to go scoreless, but he did contribute defensively. I don't disagree with Doc playing everyone. Our kids need experience and so why not when things are going so well and they are all contributing.
Shira points out that a strong fourth quarter helped the Celtics to put the Pacers away. They played well for all 48 minutes but the difference in this game was that they never let up. They continued to play hard and to play defense right up to the end. It was Perk who set the tone for the game defensively and the rest of the team responded. Now if they can just build on this one and come out on Friday and do it again.
Peter May reports that Danny is still positive and feels that we are very close. In Danny's radio interview, he more than positive, he was bubbly.
Sebastian Telfair was playing "fantastic," especially in the two games prior to last night. Doc Rivers was doing a "heck of a job" -- where have we heard that phrase before? -- and was a diligent and hard worker. The Celtics had eight or nine players who were legitimate NBA starters and two more who could be decent subs Just as it was early to bury this team after the 1 and 6 start. It may be early to pencil them in for the EC finals also. But this game is a start and it shows what this team is capable of. Now they just need to find some consistency.
The Globe Notebook reports that Jefferson is ready to return to practice next week, 3-4 weeks before early reports said he would. It just goes to show that when they actually fix what is wrong with him, the kid heals quickly. Shira also shares Larry Bird's thoughts on a few different subjects.
The Daily News Tribune reports that the Celtics defense keys a win over a less than enthusiastic Pacers Team. Some of these articles seem to infer that the Celtics only played well because the Pacers weren't into the game and played poorly. The way I see it, the Pacers played poorly because the Celtics stepped up their defense. Also in the Tribune, Scott Souza reports that Al is looking on the bright side. Yes, he missed some time again this year, but it could have been so much worse. Al seems to have a great attitude this season and I expect him to pick up right where he left off before the appendectomy.
Projo reports that the Pacers were no match for the hot shot Celtics. Even though the defense and rebounding are the main reason for this victory, the offense was working right last night as well. Pierce and Wally were hitting their shots and they got help from several others. Pierce's points came completely within the team offense instead of trying to force things and that makes us so much better. The Projo Celtics Notebook also reports on Jefferson's quick recovery from surgery along with the mystery surrounding Ratliff's condition. No one seems to have a clue when or if we can expect him back. Tony is giving away Turkeys in his home town.
Eric Weiss has a good piece on Draft Express that gives an account of Leon Powe's game against Orlando. I love this kid. He plays hard and gives us much needed toughness inside. When Al comes back, I would like to see Al back up Perk at center and Powe come in for Gomes at the 4.
The Patriot Ledger conjectures that inconsistency is the Celtics problem. We will know more after Friday's game. If they can build on last night's game and come out with the same defensive intensity and get another win, maybe they are on the way to being more consistent.

Defense Keys Win Over Pacers
Wednesday, November 15, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:23 PM
November 15, 2006 The Celtics finally played defense tonight with a positive result. The Celtics played the Pacers pretty evenly during the first half, up only 2 at the half. They came out in the third, playing with passion and defensive intensity and built a lead that this time they didn't give up. They finished with a 114-88 win.
Tonight there were more than a few positives. Just about every Celtic contributed to this win. Perk was huge in this game, intimidating in the paint. He played with passion and played hard and finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks in 28 minutes. His defense set the tone for the game.
Gomes played yet another solid game with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and a block in 28 minutes. He always seems to be around the play and has an uncanny knack to be there for the rebounds. Gomes played some solid defense as well.
Rondo won the Tommy Award tonight. He set the tone for the game and just plays solid ball. He finished with 5 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. This kid brings energy and defense and sets the tone for the team. We are a better team when he is in the game. Telfair also played well and finished with 6 assists.
Powe backed up his sensational game on Monday with an other solid effort with 5 points and 4 rebounds in 10 minutes. He also played good defense and was able to deter several shots with his physical play.
Pierce had the quietest 32 points I have ever seen. I was really surprised to see that he scored that much because he did it in the flow of the game and didn't force anything. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Wally finished with 20 points and 4 rebounds.
Delonte had only 2 points on a coast to coast slam, but he played solid defense and finished with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
This is the way I knew this team was capable of playing. I hope that they will come out the same way and play team defense against Portland on Friday and we will have another win. Defense is the key and tonight they finally got it. I have to say that Perk and Rondo set the defensive tone and the rest of the team rose to their level. I just hope they can build on this and go on a run.
There is much joy in Celticsville tonight.

Wednesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:49 AM
November 15, 2006 Tonight we have yet another chance to right the ship and get this team on track. It doesn't get easier, though as the Pacers are playing very well this season. But we are at home and I do believe that this team has what it takes to win every game. They just need to put it all together. Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
Mark Murphy tells us that the players have Doc's back. Perk at least has been outspoken in support of his coach. While I don't like Doc's in game decisions and at times he seems completely clueless, if the players are behind him, I hope he can pull it together along with the players. I just love Perk. He is loyal on top of being a hard worker, a tough player and a good kid.
Peter May reports that Doc isn't fazed by the slow start. He still believes that this team is going to get it and will turn it around. I agree with him. Doc also defense his decision to go small when we desperately needed a defensive rebound at the end of the Orlando game. This was one of his in game decisions that make me frustrated wit him.
The Globe also has a piece on the emergence of Leon Powe. It too 7 games for Doc to give the kid a chance and he made the most of it. He brings everything to this team that we need and I hope to see him get more playing time as he is only going to get better. True Hoop also has a piece on Leon. You just have to love this kid.
There are several negative articles on the Celtics but I prefer to ignore them but if you want to read a few, check out SI.com, Hoopsworld, and Enterprise.
I personally don't think things are as bad as some articles point out. I like Jeff's article on CelticsBlog today that points out some of the more positive things from this season so far.
Join us on Celtics Green tonight for the play by play as the Celtics face the Indiana Pacers in the Garden. As always Q will add his great insights as well.

Jefferson Targets Next Week for a Return
Tuesday, November 14, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 8:58 PM
November 14, 2006
Al Jefferson is just starting to eat solid foods again and trying to gain back the 10 pounds he lost since his appendectomy. Jefferson is hoping possibly be back playing by next week.
"If everything works the way I plan, I'm looking to get a practice in next week on Monday or Tuesday and hope to be playing by midweek," said Jefferson, who spent his time at home getting some rest and eating chicken noodle soup, jello and pudding until he got clearance to return to eating solid foods on Monday. "I never believed it was going to be six weeks." This is really good news. Original estimates said 3-6 weeks and if he comes back next week, it will be less than the 3 week minimum originally given. Hopefully this will end his back luck for this season. I would love to see Powe and Al playing together again.

Tuesday's Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 2:13 PM
November 14, 2006 Today's odds and ends are a little late because sometimes life gets in the way of basketball, sad as that is. Having been on the Leon Powe bandwagon since Day 1, I am understandably excited today. He proved he would play in the preseason when he got a chance and he proved he could play again last night. If Doc doesn't play this kid now, there is something wrong. The play of Perk and Powe did a lot to temper my disappointment in yet another close loss and failure to execute on either end at the close of the game. There is a lot going on in the Celtics' Nation today so here we go:
Steve Bulpett reminds us that the Celtics 1 and 6 record is the worst since that awful season in 1978-79. Most of us fans like to block that debacle from our memories. Hopefully this team will pull it together and not try to tank for Oden as we know how that worked out when we tried it for Duncan.
In his Celtics Notebook, Bulpett reports that Powe grabbed Doc's attention (along with a lot of Celtics fans too). This kid brings toughness inside, rebounding, shot blocking, and energy. All things that we desperately need on this team. The question is, why hasn't he been playing all along? Theo is going to be out indefinitely, but Al was seen at the shootaround. Pierce is making an attempt to up his rebounding this season.
Mark Murphy reports that Pierce says that the blame for last night starts with him and in a good part that is true. Pierce was way off on both ends of the floor. Perk had more to say on the subject.
“There’s nothing for anyone to point their finger at here,” said a bristling Kendrick Perkins. “It’s not coaching that’s the problem here, and it’s not our offense - it’s us and our commitment. “I don’t want anyone blaming the coaches for this. We have good defensive schemes, and they put us in the right position to make plays. We just have to stick with it and see it all the way through.” Perkins, one of the few Celtics who puts defense before his offense, believes that a shift in priorities is in order. “If everyone comes in with the same mindset, and isn’t just out there thinking of their offense, then we’ll be all right,” Perkins said. “We can’t win games where a team is shooting 53 percent on us. “That’s a matter of pride - deciding not to let them take those open shots. I came in with the pride in my defense tonight. I just couldn’t let somebody from the other team get off. We’ll put up points, everyone knows that. But we have to do both - defense and offense. I’m not just talking about pick-and-roll defense, but straight-up defense. All of us, me included, have to get better. You can’t go out there with just two or three guys thinking that way. Everyone has to say, ‘I’m not letting this guy get off.’ Have I mentioned today how much I love this kid? What a great attitude! He is right on with his assessment. What this team needs is pride in their defense. Perk and Powe give us a start. Now if only everyeone else would make that committment.
Megliola points out that the Celtics are falling further behind. 1 and 6 is a terrible start but there are silver linings and this team does have potential. The play of Powe last night gives us a glimmer of hope. Defense is a matter of attitude and I believe that this team can learn to play defense and turn this season around. I just hope that the coaches can coach defense.
The Globe points out that Powe earned his playing time with his performance last night. He also tells us that Doc still likes this team and feels that they are close in spite of appearing very green in their play so far.
The Globe Notebook reports that Al is healing quickly and hopes to be back a lot sooner than the 6 weeks that were originally predicted. That is very good news. Also reported is that the opposing team's point guards are destroying us. I think this means that we need to start Rondo for his defense.
Bob Ryan reports that the wins may not be here, but the hope still is. It is good that the team isn't getting down on itself. I still believe that the team will turn it around and finish strong, even with Doc as their coach. Ryan also focuses on Al, Rondo, and Green who he predicts will be stars in the league.
The Worcester Telegram reports that West, Pierce, and Wally are on the All Star Ballot. Pierce doesn't expect to be voted on by the fans, however because of the Celtics record. Also noted is that the most likely player to go to the D League is Allan Ray. Powe, Green, Gomes and Rondo are eligible but are expected to stay with the team.
Projo tells us that the Celtics aren't practicing what Doc preaches. The question I ask is, why not? Is he not making his game plan clear in practice? Are the veterans like Pierce doing their own thing? Are the players he is playing not working hard enough? You have to wonder. We have some incredibly hard working young players. I have to believe that maybe Doc isn't getting it across to them for some reason. Powe, the one player that Doc says isn't getting it, came in and pretty much dominated in his 24 minutes. Curiouser and curiouser.
We have another chance at home on Wednesday to right this ship as we host the Pacers. I just keep thinking that any game now, they are going to turn it around. Now is as good a time as any.

Celtics Come Up Short Once Again!
Monday, November 13, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 11:38 PM
November 14, 2006 Once again, the Celtics lose a close one at home. The starters seemed to come out flat and we got behind quickly. Pierce's shot was way off and he was having a lot of trouble on the defensive end guarding Hill. Wally wasn't shooting well either. Gomes got a couple of quick fouls and Doc put Scal in for him. After a rather uneventful few minutes and a few mistakes, Doc finally put Powe in and he made his presence known right away by grabbing a rebound. Powe was the player of the game. He came into the game in the second period and was playing well on both ends of the court. He brought energy and toughness and played very well along with Perk. But he didn't see many minutes in the second half and that is very puzzling. This kid is clearly a player and has made the case for more playing time. Powe finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and a Tommy Award in 24 minutes.
Other positives include Perk's play. He finished with 8 points on 4 of 5 shooting along with 8 rebounds and 2 steals. He also played some good defense on Howard and challenged many shots inside. He had only 1 foul at the half and finished with only 4 for the game in 31 minutes. He improves more each game.
Other bright spots included Gomes' 12 points and 2 rebounds in just 17 minutes and Rondo's 7 assists and 2 rebounds. On the whole, our young players out played the veterans tonight.

On the puzzling side, Doc kept Pierce in the entire second half, even though he was playing poorly on both ends of the floor and by the end of the game, he was worn out. Doc's rotations are still very puzzling. We had a lineup in the second quarter that played very well together with Rondo, Perk, Powe, West and Green/Wally. Then, in the second half we didn't see that lineup again. Also, after dominating in the second and early third periods, Doc didn't play Powe much of the second half. Telfair was having a hard time staying with Nelson and was getting burned every time down and yet, he stayed in there. Pierce did show some hustle at one point and dove to the floor for a loose ball and that was good to see as at times he hasn't seemed to expend a lot of energy on the floor.

In spite of Pierce shooting 6-20 and having 5 turnovers, and Wally shooting 5-11 and having 2 turnovers, and shooting 38% for the game (largely due to our two stars), we still had a chance to win this game. We took better care of the ball with only 11 turnovers compared to 16 for the Magic and that was part of the reason. We were also out rebounded 43 - 34
We are 1-6 but there are positives. In a game where Pierce and Wally played terrible, and we were missing Al and Ratliff, we still had a chance to win. I still feel that we need a new coach, though. I think he has lost the players and his game management still leaves you scratching your head and wondering why.

Have Some Koolaid
by FLCeltsFan 9:31 AM
November 13, 2006 I am one of the few remaining optimists remaining among the Celtics Faithful these days. Green Koolaid still flows freely around my house these days.
Yes, I realize that we are 1 and 5 to start the season. Yes, I watched the team disappear and blow a 25 point lead and lose to the Cavaliers. Yes, I know that the current Celtics coach isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. But I also know that there are some things to be positive about also.
For one thing, in spite of seeing the team collapse and blow leads and collapse at the end of games, I have seen them play very well for 3 quarters. I have seen how they are capable of playing and know that it is just a matter of time until they figure out how to close out games and how to continue that play for 4 quarters.
We have had a plethora of injuries already this seaso. Theo Ratliff has only played in two games and wasn't 100% in those. Al Jefferson was felled by his appendix just as he was blossoming into that player we always knew he would be. If it wasn't for bad luck, this poor kid wouldn't have any luck at all. Wally has a pain in his butt. Hopefully that won't become a regular thing but it did disrupt the chemistry a bit while he rested it. West has missed the entire training camp with one thing or another and is just now finally getting back to playing like himself. Scal had the shoulder injury. I know, not a big loss, but he has been doing some good things this season and not hurting us like he did last season and since Doc loves to depend on him, his loss did cause some problems in the lineups. Telfair had breathing problems in the Jazz game and had to go check out a lineup in the Knicks game. Things like that affect your chemistry. In spite of all that going on, we have been in most games right up to the end.
On the individual performance front, there are some good things to look at also. Telfair has struggled at times but also at times has shown some good things. He has shown us that his shooting is no where near as bad as advertised. His defense needs a lot of work, but then he isn't alone in that. Rondo has shown that he is the real deal. This kid has the whole package. He can defend and is capable of locking down any player he is put on. He can drive and dish off or finish at the basket and is capable of picking the pocket of any player in the league and he can beat anyone down the court without a question. His shot needs some work but reports are that he is working for hours before and after practice to improve it. Rondo is for real and is going to blossom this season. Mark it down. Whether Rondo starts or comes off the bench, I believe that by season's end we will have 2 of the better PGs in the league.
After missing most of training camp, and getting off to a slow start, Delonte West has found his game and is back to being the scrappy, tough guard that we fell in love with last season. He also seems to have found his shot. That is very good news. Now if Pierce will only pass it to him, we will see far fewer double teams on the other players. Delonte gives us so much and hasn't really played well but he is almost 100% now and we should see a difference in the team because of it.
Perk has been plagued with foul trouble early but studied a lot of tape and the last couple of games has shown that he is working his way out of that mentality. He had a double double in the last game and I believe that he is just going to continue to get better. He has had 6 blocks in the last two games and is being more aggressive without picking up the quick fouls. I really love this kid and truly expect him to break out this season, especially with Ratliff on the shelf for a little while longer.
Ryan Gomes has picked up where he left off last season, opening eyes with his strong and smart play. He had his first triple double the other night and I expect that it is the first of many. He has a knack for getting rebounds, even from taller and stronger players. He is hitting his shots and also finding the open man. He is blossoming into a quality all around player before our eyes and he is just going to continue to get better.
Finally, it has only been 6 games. It is still very early in the season to pronounce it a failure already. This team is going to come together and things are going to gel and they are going to get better. The Celtics will be peaking mid year when the other teams are starting to wear down. Of course other things may happen in the meantime such as a coaching change or a trade for a star to go with Pierce, but even if those things don't happen, I still expect this team to finish strong. So, grab a glass and join me for some koolaid and enjoy the roller coaster that this season promises to be.

Monday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:05 AM
November 13, 2006 Well, we have had a couple of days to digest that last loss. A loss like that one is enough to give you indigestion. The guys in green have another chance tonight to right the ship when Orlando visits Boston. Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
Steve Bulpett theorizes that the team we are cheering for today may not be the same team we cheer for at the end of the season. Danny is still looking for the elusive trade for a star and Bulpett tells us that some of our young talent is destined to be playing for another team before next year.
Shira Springer brings up the injuries that have been plaguing the Celtics early this season and the fact that we need Doc to be a motivator as the confidence level of our young team continues to plunge. But the bottom line is that if the players are playing as hard as Doc says, why aren't they improving?
The Green Room states that there are no moral victories here. And as they try to look for positives, they also give Doc some very good advice.
Celtics Blog has a piece that discusses the Deja Vu that has to come up when comparing Doc's coaching career in Orlando and now in Boston. Having gotten off to a 1 and 5 start, the parallels begin with the Orlando team that went 1 and 10 before Doc was fired. Celtics 17 gives us a list of grievances with each of the players and with Doc. Certainly the players each have been doing things that should be corrected. But isn't it a coach's job to work with players to point out and correct these things?
Red's Army has a piece that questions why everyone calls for Doc's head but no one has been calling for Danny's. Should the GM share the blame for the performance of the team he has put together? Or is the team a good one and the coaching just isn't getting the most out of the talent assembled? This article is worth it just to look a the picture that accompanies it. Priceless!!
Jughead has a piece over on CelticsStuff Live that is looking for the defense that has been missing in the 4th quarters. Poor Jug is turning into a pessimist. His dad, however is almost as optimistic as I am. If you missed their show last night with Steve Bulpett, you should download it and give a listen.
And finally, the latest Carnival of the NBA is up over on Rising Suns. They do a good job this month, be sure to check it out.
There is no news yet as to whether Wally is playing tonight. If not, I would expect the same starting lineup as we saw against the Cavs. I wouldn't mind seeing that lineup anyway, and Wally come off the bench. That lineup seemed to play very well together. But I wouldn't expect Doc to notice that kind of thing. Join us tonight at Celtics Green for the play by play and Q's always insightful commentary.

CelticsStuff Live Tonight with Steve Bulpett
Sunday, November 12, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 3:56 PM
November 12, 2006 Celticsstuff Live airs again tonight from 7-9pm EST featuring special guest Steve Bulpett from the Boston Herald. Steve Bulpett is in his 22nd season covering the Celtics. In addition to being the dean of NBA beat writers in continuous service with a team, he’s also followed the Celtics as a home and away beat longer than anyone in franchise history. The native of Lynn and Swampscott is a graduate of the University of Dayton, where he pursued dreams of playing basketball and becoming a lawyer. Reality intervened on the court, but he found a way to stay involved in the game. He left UD with an intramural hoop championship (teammates with ESPN’s Dan Patrick) and a journalism degree.
As always they will be taking your calls while listeners chat away in The Pit. You can call the toll free number at any time up to one hour prior to the show to leave a question on their voicemail for possible use during the interview with Steve. See you there!!!

Sunday's Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:22 AM
November 12, 2006 Last night's loss was a heartbreaker. But it also should give hope to Celtics fans. We saw what this team is capable of for 3 quarters. Now they just have to learn to sustain it for 4 quarters instead of 3 and learn to finish games. I don't know if Doc is on the hot seat or not. I don't know if we would do better with another coach, but I think we would. Some of Doc's decisions are just so baffling. But I still think this team will come around this season, even with Doc. It is only a matter of time. In the meantime, here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
The Herald, The Globe and Projo all have reports on last night's game. Every one says that in the fourth quarter we stopped attacking. We did it on the offensive end, and on the defensive end. That may be our youth showing through or it could be Doc playing our bench players against their starters to start the 4th and letting them gain the momentum. After that, the Celtics were just scrambling and never did get back to being the aggressor. I believe that the consistency will come in time.
Mark Murphy tells us that Doc laments the lost art of passing. I also miss the days of the Celtics of old that used passing instead of dribbling to advance the ball. If our team could get back to that, it would make them a much better team. But it takes committment from every player on the team to make it work. This article also mentions that Ricky is still making waves in Minny. I still love Ricky. He just seems like a big kid who is out there having fun.
Bulpett's Notebook reports on the latest injuries on the Celtics. Telfair was back in the starting lineup after going to the hospital the previous night. But Ratliff and Wally were out of last night's game. Hopefully Wally will return for Monday's game but Ratliff could be out for an extended period with his back. I would love to see the starting unit from last night continue and Wally to come off the bench. We could really use his veteran leadership with that second unit. And last night's starters seemed to play well together.
Scott Souza tells us that we will see inconsistency this season because of the inexperience of this team. We will see improvement as the team grows together and gets more experience. Hopefully it will all come together at some time this season.
Shira's Notebook reports that the cause of Telfair's breathing problems is unknown. But they didn't find anything that would keep him from playing. She also gives us more detail on Wally and Theo's injuries. Powe and Ray were activated for last night's game but didn't see any playing time. You would think when nothing else was working to get the momentum back in that 4th quarter, Powe at least deserved a try. Perk is working hard to find the cause of his frequent fouls and trying very hard to work on it. He is doing much better and playing very well. He can only improve.
Peter May uses the Chicago team that started out 0 and 9 to point out that our slow start doesn't necessarily mean that we won't come around and finish strong. That was a young team that started out poorly but pulled together and won the 4th seed in the East. I expect that this team will come around as well and finish strong. At least I hope so.
Hoopsworld asks the question What would Red do? That is a good question. Red would say keep it simple. Red would say to emphasize defense and rebounding. And Red would say do what you do best. Play to your strengths. Bigs play under the basket. Al wouldn't be finding the open man but would be putting the ball in the basket. Rondo would be running, not playing a half court game. Pierce would not be dribbling and driving into double teams. Telfair and Scal woudln't be shooting 3's. It does seem at times that Doc plays to the players' weaknesses and not their strengths.
The Worcester Telegram has a piece on Ratliff and how his shot blocking can help us. It was obviously written before last night's revelation that Theo would be out for awhile again with his back. I agree that a healthy Theo would help us. I hope they give him plenty of time to heal so that he can come back and help us in the stretch run at the end of the season. Perk is becoming a good shot blocker also, averaging 1.7 per game and racking up 6 in his last two games.
