Celtics End Practice Early
by FLCeltsFan 6:39 PM
October 28, 2006 Mark Murphy reports that Doc was so disgusted by what he saw in practice today that he sent the team packing off to the weight room an hour early.
“It wasn’t one of our better ones,'’ he said. “But I just had to end it.'’ To illustrate, Rivers took an example from his other favorite sport. “When you’re playing golf, you can sit on the range and hit bad shots all day,'’ he said. “Well, you can practice bad habits all day, too.'’ This comes as the coaching staff is trying to implement 3 new defensive schemes that weren't in use in the preseason.
“The tough part is when you have so many guys who can play a lot of different positions - as we have - that you have a lot more to go over,'’ he said. This is rather disturbing that with only 4 days to go until our season opener, the team practices so poorly that Doc has to stop practice. Hopefully the players will take it to heart and come more ready to practice tomorrow.
It encouraging that Doc is actually working on defense in practice. I hope one of the schemes is to defend the pick and roll.

Saturday's Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:01 AM
October 28, 2006 Today's big news is the house cleaning to end the bacterial infection that affected both Pierce and West. We are all anxious for the season to start. The 15 man roster is set, all Celtics seem to be healthy now except Theo Ratliff, and Doc is deciding who will play and who will sit. Just 4 more days and i can't wait! Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today. The Herald Notebook reports on the bacterial infection and the resulting house cleaning. Glad they are catching this thing before we had more players out with it. They also report that Tony is happy that his option has been picked up but realizes he still has a lot of work to do. Kandi is with his daughter who has pneumonia. The Globe has almost the same report this morning with the addition that Al was launching 3's after practice. I guess Doc still wants his 3 point shooting center. I sure hope not because we need centers who play with their backs to the basket, not out on the 3 point line. NBA.com has Sebastian Telfair in their On the Spot column. Telfair has a fresh start in Boston and seems ready to make the most of it. He has played well especially in the last 4 or 5 games. I think Rondo has the tools to be the better PG though I believe he will eventually take over the starters spot. Hoopsworld discusses the final cuts and the rotation dilemma that Doc faces with the team. We are loaded with young and talented players and Doc has to decide which will play and which will sit. Celtics 17 has a piece that puts Doc on trial. The debate rages on both sides of the issue. Some like Doc and most don't. In my opinion, he hasn't proved yet that he is a good coach. His in-game decisions have cost us games, his rotations were puzzling at best, and he hasn't seen the need to stress defense in practice. I am hoping he will prove me wrong this season and correct a lot of his mistakes as I don't think he is going anywhere in the near future.

Gerald Green's Sophomore Diary
Friday, October 27, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:16 PM
October 27, 2006
| Last year we enjoyed reading Green's Rookie Diaries in Sports Illustrated. It appears that he will continue posting his Sophomore Diaries in SI this season.
I'M A VETERAN! O.K., SO MAYBE NOT A REAL VET (MOST OF THE ROOKIES ARE OLDER THAN ME), BUT IT'S DEFINITELY A DIFFERENT FEELING THIS TIME. He discusses how John Lucas broke down his weaknesses and turned them into strength and he relates that the coaches are happy with his progress.
This summer wasn't all baskeball, though, Gerald helped his sister with her new baby and got to take a vacation.
My mom saw how burned out I was, so she suggested I take a vacation. I always said that if I could ever afford it, I'd go to Paris. So I did it. I went for a week with my girlfriend, Doris Martinez. France is a cool country -- we went sightseeing, and the Eiffel Tower is something else. Being there gave me a chance to recharge.
Now, he says it is time to get back to work. One thing he makes clear is that he really doesn't want to go back to the D-League. I know what Coach [Doc Rivers] expects of me, and the type of hard-nosed defender I need to be. I'm ready. There are good players here, and getting minutes will be tough, but if I play my game, attacking the basket and playing that lock-down defense on the perimeter, I'll be all right. Just as long as I don't have to go back to the D-League. I can't tell you how much I don't want to go back. I feel like I'm an NBA player right now. My goal is to prove that every night. [More]

Grant Announces Retirement
by FLCeltsFan 7:49 PM
October 27, 2006
| Brian Grant, who was waived by the Celtics yesterday, announced today that he plans to retire.
"I just decided it was time to hang it up. I really wasn't able to perform over the past few years like I was the first 10 years," he said. "It was time." Grant spent 12 seasons in the league, playing with the Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns. He was traded to the Celtics in the deal that brought us Rondo on draft night.
Over his career, Grant averaged 10.5 points and 7.4 rebounds. He averaged 10.3 points and 10.2 rebounds in the 2002-03 season.
Grant was widely recognized for his charitable efforts and in 1999 was awarded the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, an honor given annually to a player or coach for outstanding community service.
Grant partnered with Ronald McDonald House Charities, assisting seriously and terminally ill children and their families. In Los Angeles, he funded a multipurpose sports field for the South Central Los Angeles nonprofit "A Place Called Home."
In Phoenix, he worked closely with the nonprofit Vested Interest to mentor young, underprivileged men. [More] source:Yahoo Sports Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!

Celtics Sanitize Facilities after Infections to West and Pierce
by FLCeltsFan 4:34 PM
October 27, 2006 The Celtics have announced that all their facilities will be professionally cleaned and all players tested for bacterial infections as a result of the infections that sidelined first Delonte and then Pierce.
As a result of the infections, all Celtics players and basketball operations staff are also being tested for bacterial infections. It's not as uncommon as you may think, and many college and professional teams have had issues with bacteria infections in the past. Players have thrown out personal hygiene items as part of the sanitization process. Good that they take things like this seriously as it would be a real bummer to have players out one after the other with infections.
Also in this article it relates that Doc is still adding things to the playbook and today added a new defensive set. That is promising. Now if he would just work on it instead of expecting the team to pick it up while working on the offense.

Chad Ford Likes Our Rookies
by FLCeltsFan 3:25 PM
October 27, 2006 Chad Ford has his Rookie Report out and he has some good things to say about our Rookies. He divides the Rookies into groups: The Good, The Solid, The Bad, The Ugly, and The Sleepers. Rondo is included in The Good category and here is what he had to say:
Rajon Rondo, PG, Celtics I had Rondo ranked at the top point guard in the draft almost all year and thought he should be a top 10 pick. He became the steal of the draft when he fell into the Celtics' lap at No. 21 (via trade from Phoenix).
So far in the preseason, Rondo has played as well as, if not better than, Boston starting point guard Sebastian Telfair. Only time will tell whether Rondo will be able to beat out Telfair for the starting job, but the facts are in his favor: Rondo is a much better defender and rebounder, and he has played virtually mistake-free basketball so far.
If he can learn to consistently knock down the mid-range jumper, he's got a chance to be a star. So, Chad Ford joins the legions around the NBA who are on the Rondo bandwagon.
Chad also included Leon Powe in his report. Leon is included in The Sleepers.
Leon Powe, F, Celtics It's doubtful that Powe will see much run on a stacked Celtics squad this year (in fact there's no guarantee he makes the team), but the C's have to be happy about his early play. The last few games he's been a force on the boards and in the paint. Powe has first-round talent. If the knee holds up, he could be a player down the road.
Rondo has what it takes to be a very special player and people all over the league are seeing it. I only hope that the foot problems don't derail his career. Powe does have what it takes to be a player down the road, and I believe he can help us this season as well. We need toughness inside and rebounding and Leon can give us both of those things.

Friday's Odd's and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:48 AM
October 27, 2006 Mark Murphy gives us an insight into Tony Allen's background and his family support system as he awaits the trial on his assault charges. Danny picked up his option for next season but the fact remains, no one knows how that trial will turn out.
Jackson and Grant ended up being the final 2 cuts as Steve Bulpett reports. Danny is quoted as saying that Powe, Ray and Kandi earned their spots. I can't help but feel that Ray is being kept because he can handle the ball and fill in at PG in case Rondo is unable to go and they don't want to switch West back to PG. I hope Powe gets playing time because I do believe he can help the team. Doc says we need toughness, defense and rebounding, and Powe adds all of those things.
The Daily News Tribune has a piece on Hickman and Gilroy and their Celtics Pride radio show. I listened to it last season on 1510 and they have a fun show to listen to after games. This season it will be on ESPN Radio and is worth a listen if you are looking for something to do after a game.
Peter May focuses on the negatives, as usual, in this Globe article. There are a lot of questions, but I feel that there were enough positives in the preseason that we can be excited about what is to come in the season.
As we reported, Paul Pierce had a chat on Celtics.com yesterday. Here is a transcript from the chat where Paul answered several questions that were sent in.
Kentucky.com has a good article that discusses the repercussions for 2 famous Kentucky coaches should Rondo have a very good season this year. I imagine both will be watching him closely, or at least they should be.
NBA.com checks out the Rondo vs Williams matchup in the Nets game and have some very favorable things to say about both rookies.
Last night on FSN New England Sports Tonight, they repeated their report that Rondo is suffering from plantar fasciitis. At this point, it doesn't sound very serious because FSN is the only media outlet that is reporting on it and nothing has been said about Rondo sitting out or missing games. There are several courses of treatment for it and hopefully the Celtics have found one that works well and will allow him to play without endangering his future.

Celtics Cut Grant and Jackson - Will Pick up Allen's Option
Thursday, October 26, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 6:39 PM
October 26, 2006 As expected, the team cut 2 players today. Bulpett reports in the Herald:
The Celtics took a fairly expected route today with their last cuts, dropping Luke Jackson and Brian Grant by the 6 p.m. deadline to get down to the maximum roster of 15. Players have to be on waivers for two business days, so today’s cuts were necessary to meet the Monday 6 p.m. deadline for finalized rosters. Jackson was acquired in an October 13 deal with Cleveland and was unable to get much of a look. Grant was acquired from Phoenix in the trade that netted the draft rights to Rajon Rondo, but he never joined the club in person. In addition, the Celts will pick up their option for a the 2007-08 season on Tony Allen. That move could come as soon as today or Friday. Bulpett also announces that they will be picking up Allen's option possibly by tomorrow.

Celtics Close Preseason with Loss to Raptors
by FLCeltsFan 10:32 AM
October 26, 2006
| Celtics end the season with a 106-102 loss to the Toronto Raptors. Of 33 close games last season, we lost 21. Hopefully we aren't going to continue that type of pattern this season.
As with the most of the other preseason games, there were positives and negatives. We turned the ball over too much with a total of 21 turnovers. We have to limit our turnovers and take better care of the ball if we want to win this season. We won the battle of the boards 44 -38 and that is a good thing but we had lapses on defense, allowing the Raptors to score too easily at times. As for the individual performances there were things to be encouraged about.
Telfair had yet another very strong game and seems to improve with each game. He seems comfortable with leading the team. He is a much better shooter than advertised and hasn't hesitated to take the shot when he was open, shooting over 50% for the preseason. He played well all around with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, with only 2 turnovers.
Wally seems to be another player improving more as the preseason went along. He is moving very well and seems to be close to 100% on his surgically replaired knee. Last night he had 27 points and 4 rebounds and moved very well without the ball. On the downside, he also had 5 turnovers.
Delonte was once again Delonte with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. He seems to be taking to the off guard spot quite well, although several times he passed up a shot that he should have taken, trying to be a playmaker. His role should become more defined as he gets more practice time in before the season starts.
Perk, Al, Powe, and Gomes all had solid but not spectacular games. Perk finished with 3 fouls, but he needs to learn to defend the paint without fouling. He finished with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. With a little more confidence, he should start playing more aggessively and with less fouls. Al had 6 points 7 rebounds and 2 blocks and was looking comfortable on the floor. He was 2 for 3 on FG and so they weren't finding him inside very much. Powe played solid other than a couple of turnovers for 3 second violations. he finished with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 1 block in limited minutes once again.
Rondo had a very un-Rondo like game finishing with no points, no steals, , 1 rebound, and 3 assists. Tanguay and Felger attributed this to his having Plantar Fasciitis (see article below).
Now they have a week off to define roles, build chemistry, and work on defense. The final cuts still need to be made, Tony's option is still up in the air, and there are still injury concerns, but hopefully with the buzzer sounds on Nov 1, they will be ready and play like a team on a mission.

Plantar Fasciitis - Rondo Has It
by FLCeltsFan 10:11 AM
October 26, 2006
| In listening to NE Sports Tonight, I was surprised to hear Tanguay and Felger discussing the fact that Rondo has Plantar Fasciitis. Bosh sat out with this in last night's game and at first I thought it was referring to him. But listening to the show again, they are definitely discussing Rondo. Felger said that one piece of news that Dickerson relayed to them is about the Plantar Fasciitis. Tanguay said that he also has it but that it is a bit more serious for Rondo to have it. He also said that with Plantar Fasciitis you have to continue stretching your foot and that it can nag you like a ham string. They contributed Rondo's less than Rondo-like perfomance tonight to the foot injury.
The website on this condition says this: Symptoms usually resolve more quickly when the time between the onset of symptoms and the beginning of treatment is as short as possible. If treatment is delayed, the complete resolution of symptoms may take 6-18 months or more. Treatment will typically begin by correcting training errors, which usually requires some degree of rest, the use of ice after activities, and an evaluation of the patient’s shoes and activities. For pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) may be recommended. Treatment usually requires some degree of rest. I am wondering why we hadn't heard anything about this before. Will Rondo have to spend time sitting out? I am sure there is more to come but for now, it gives us something more to consider. Heinsohn said that this condition basically ended his career as he spent his entire last year battling it.
I wonder if this is why they have been talking about keeping Allan Ray? Ray can play PG and could fill in if Rondo has to be out for a period to rest his foot.
Update: Both Justin from CelticStuff Live and Jeff from CelticsBlog are checking their sources to verify. I for one would love to hear that they got it wrong on the show. I will update you when any new information becomes available.
UPDATE (6:48 PM): Tanguay and Dickerson were talking about the health of the team and Tanguay said as we reported last night, Rondo is suffering from plantar fasciitis but has played very well. So this adds a bit of confirmation to the story.

Is Doc's Seat Getting Hotter?
Wednesday, October 25, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:26 AM
October 25, 2006 Kind of hidden in all of the media frenzy over the Telfair robbery and subsequent Fabolous shooting is the fact that Doc wasn't honest with the players or the press. It hasn't set well with ownership, press, or fans.
I am not the biggest Doc fan and most of that stems from his inability to coach defense or use his bigs to their strengths. I am a big fan of defense and love my bigs to play under the basket and own the paint. Doc coaches offense and expects the players to learn defense by playing it while practicing offensive sets. He also likes bigs who wander on the arc looking for an outside shot. I didn't think much of it at the time, but Doc's deceit that night was a big blunder. Things have settled down and Telfair's lawyer is saying that the investigation is over as far as Telfair is concerned, but there is still talk about how Doc handled the matter.
Chris Sheridan brings it up in his Insider Column on ESPN:
With a camera beaming his words back to the living rooms of New England, Rivers looked one of his beat writers in the eye and perpetuated the untruth, going so far as to say he had joked with Telfair that he must have gotten sick from dominating his cousin, Marbury, in the first quarter of the game.
The lie was exposed the following day, and owner Wyc Grousbeck was livid over the way the matter was handled, saying the team should communicate in two ways: By telling the truth or not commenting.
Wyc went on WEEI the next morning and voiced his displeasure with the way Doc handled the situation. For Wyc to take time to call in and voice his opinion on the matter on the air, he must have been quite unhappy with the way it was handled. As noted the above, he felt that Doc should have told the truth or made no comment until the facts were known.
The message boards are also speculating that Doc's failure to handle the Telfair incident properly will lead to his demise. From CelticsBlog from a poster who has proven to have inside information in previous situations.
Word going around is that Wyc was furious that Doc lied to the press after Bassy was pulled from the Knicks game and that the Celtics are already thinking about replacing Doc with Rick Adelman, Stan Van Gundy, and possibly Jim Obrien.
The Celtics would have preferred Doc no commented Bassy's departure then appearing like liars to the press. And then from RealGM from another respected poster:
I'm beginning to think that the "Telfair Incident", when Doc's first instinct was to lie, will be the excuse Wyc needs to replace Rivers.
For an owner trying to establish a nice, clean image for his team, this transgression by his coach must have been unforgivable. Certainly in the cases of Tony Allen and Telfair we're obliged to believe that they are victims until proven otherwise. Doc doesn't have that luxury, he's guilty, with millions of witnesses. His image is permanently tainted with fans and more importantly the Boston media. To Wyc this is deadly serious.
I know that it was a difficult situation, with the information sprung on Doc at the last minute, but you have to wonder when someeone's first reaction to a difficult situation is to lie about it. This may all be speculation, but Wyc was definitely upset about it and said so in the radio interview which leads me to believe that Doc's seat is hotter than ever.

Odds and Ends on Wednesday
by FLCeltsFan 9:19 AM
October 25, 2006 Well, only one more game left in the preseason and I know that most fans as well as the players are ready for the regular season to begin. Hopefully the team is ready. I really, really wanted a win last night just to get that monkey off our backs that we haven't won 3 in a row dating back to preseason last year. Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
The Herald reports on Pierce's finger infection that sidelined him for last night's game. It does seem ironic that Pierce, who is known for playing hurt, is sidelined with a paper cut. He played the night after 9 hours of dental surgery to repair 3 teeth that had been knocked loose the previous night, played 3 weeks after almost dying from 11 stab wounds, and played last season with bursitis in his elbow, often having to drain it before taking the floor, but now he is sidelined indefinitely with a paper cut. I feel like I am in Bizarro World.
More from the Globe on Pierce's paper cut in the Celtics Notebook. Also covered is a brief recap of last night's game and some thoughts on the final cut. Mentioned as on the bubble are Kandi, Jackson, and Brian Grant. Two cuts have to be made and Grant isn't a definite because of Danny's hope of still making a trade.
Jeff over on CelticsBlog does a good job of breaking down the big name market of players that could be available for a trade.
Hoopsworld continues on the Leon Powe bandwagon. With all the hoopla surrounding the Telfair trade on draft night, the drafting of Rondo and Powe kind of went under the radar but both signings are paying dividends as both of these players get a chance to play and show what they can do for the team.
Celtics Pride has a good interview with Eric Weiss of Draft Express. He has some good insights and some positive thoughts on the Celtics.
The fact that most of our youth now have 2 full seasons under their belts should also help to alleviate some of that inconsistency, so the need to rely on the less experienced youth should be lessoned to some degree.
I think we’re going to have a productive season, one that will be fun to watch and should yield a playoff birth in my opinion because most teams in the league cannot compete with our depth of talent. This depth will help to keep most games close.
Tonight's game is the last of the preseason and will be against the Raptors at home. With Pierce out again, Doc could be playing some bizarre linups. I would hope that he would play Powe more than 6 minutes and pair Powe and Al again to build the chemistry between those two inside players. Game time is 7:30 ET and will be televised on FSN and League Pass. Radio on WEEI tonight instead of WRKO. Join us on Celtics Green for the play by play and game time discussion.

Small Ball
by FLCeltsFan 8:56 AM
October 25, 2006
| Granted we are in preseason, and Pierce not playing threw a monkey wrench into Doc's plans, but this small ball obsession worries me somewhat. Don't get me wrong, I am not against small ball totally, but there has to be some guidelines for playing small ball.
Last night Doc had some very bizarre lineups. In spite of NJ still having their big lineup in at the time, Doc had a unit in with Gerald Green at center. That wasn't near as bad as the lineup with Tony Allen as the tallest player. This small ball lineup did play catch up and closed a 13 point deficit to tie the game with 7 seconds left, but they were playing against New Jersey's scrubs at the time.
Small ball is great to disrupt the other team's defenses and change the pace of the game, but to play small ball for most of the game does seem a bit excessive. Also, when you field a team that has a 6'4 player at center, you are asking to be out rebounded. It may work in the preseason because the other team is experimenting as well, but in the regular season, most coaches will exploit the mismatches sooner or later.
I like small ball in spurts and it does seem to work. But, in a small ball lineup, we need a rebounder on the floor who will challenge for every rebound on both ends of the floor. It doesn't have to be a 7 footer but an Al Jefferson or a Leon Powe or a Perk (when he is having a better game than he did last night) should be on the floor at all times with the small ball lineup. Powe only saw 6 minutes playing time last night (in which he did grab 2 rebounds and had a steal) and very well could have anchored that small ball lineup.
Like I said, it is preseason so I am not as concerned as if Doc was putting a lineup with Tony Allen at center on the floor during the regular season. All that being said, I like the lineup that Doc put out with West, Rondo, Al, Powe, and Tony. This is a small ball lineup kind of but gives us plenty of defense and two strong rebounders on the court. I don't know about you, but I am ready for the regular season to begin. Hopefully then Doc won't be putting the muchkins on the floor to battle the Wizards...

Celtics Fall to the Nets 109-107
Tuesday, October 24, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 10:16 PM
October 24, 2006
I just love this picture!!
| Celtics lose a close one to New Jersey tonight 109-107. The game was very close throughout until the 4th quarter when the Nets pulled ahead by 10. They chipped away at the lead and tied it at 107 with 7 seconds left in the game. The Nets got 2 free throws from Moore after a Green foul and Allan Ray was stuffed on the last shot. He was fouled but there was no call on the play.
Doc went with small ball for long stretches in the game. At one point, Green was playing center and another time, Tony Allen was playing center. Telfair went out at one time after turning his ankle, but returned to play very well.
Al played very well tonight and won the Tommy Award with 13 pts, 8 rb, 3 st , and 1 bl. It was probably his best game so far. Rondo and Telfair both played very well on both ends of the court. Rondo is just so impressive all the way around. Gomes had a very good game with 14 pts and 6 rb. West wasn't shooting the ball very well (5-14) but had a solid game with 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Wally looked really good tonight and seemed to be very active on both ends of the floor. He finished with 16 points 4 rebounds and 4 assists. After 2 very solid games, Powe played only 6 minutes but had 2 rebounds and 1 steal in that short time. Perk had an off game with only 1 rebound and 2 points. Tony got to the line a lot but often tried to drive when he should have found the open man. His decision making wasn't always the best. He dribbles too much and turned the ball over 5 times. It seems that he is trying too hard.
We played quite well against the Nets who fielded their first string most of the game. I do get a bit frustrated when we play small ball for long periods without a rebounder. Hopefully we won't do that too much during the season. All in all, it was a good showing for the team. I was really hoping to win this one because we had won 2 and we still haven't won 3 in a row dating back to last season. [Recap] [Box Score] Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!

Pierce Out Tonight - Listed as Day to Day
by FLCeltsFan 1:43 PM
October 24, 2006
| Celtics.com is reporting that Pierce will return to Boston and will not play tonight due to an infected finger. He is listed as day to day.
Wally is listed as starting at Shooting Guard and Gerald Green will take Pierce's place in the starting lineup. This is probably similar to most preseason situations. I imagine that if it was a game that counted, Pierce would be out there but there isn't a reason to force things when the kids could use the minutes and the game doesn't count as far as win/loss record.
UPDATE: The Globe has an update on this as well and their article mentions the fear of infections spreading through the team.
The severity of the infection is unknown, but the Celtics are clearly taking it seriously by sending Pierce back to Boston. That said, the early return to Boston is precautionary than anything else, though Pierce is experiencing discomfort in the finger and has difficulty bending it. Team officials want to make sure Pierce is completely healthy when games count. Also, in light of Delonte West's toe infection, the Celtics also wanted to make sure that infections do not spread throughout the team. It also mentioned that Doc had hoped to simulate the lineups and strategies he hoped to use to start the season, but that with Pierce being out, this won't happen. Some Tuesday Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 9:56 AM
October 24, 2006 Game day and only 2 games left in the preseason. The last time we played New Jersey, we had to come back from a 23 point deficit to win the game. We also learned that Leon Powe can indeed play. Hopefully we will see more Powe tonight. His energy and effort just seems to get everyone else going and we have needed someone like that. Here is what is goin on around the Celtic Nation today:
There are a few articles on Powe this morning and I love it. The first is a great article in the Herald. Pierce is a Powe fan too and has given him the nickname "G-Unit", as in Gorilla Unit. I love it!!!
And when Powe went down hard in the fight for a rebound, Pierce laughed and shouted to the referees, “Hey, see if the floor’s all right.” Pierce always has had an affinity for tough guys, bemoaning the loss of Danny Fortson years ago. “Yeah, I like the guys who like to get down and dirty,” said Pierce, who agreed Powe might be a less psychotic version of Fortson. I love this kid's effort and I love his attitude. It seems when he comes on the floor, everyone picks up their game. Energy like he brings is catchy. “I just try to go out there and sometimes be the enforcer,” Powe said. “I try to get all the rebounds. Whatever I can do to help my team win, that’s what I do. Rebounding is all about effort. It’s all about effort and positioning. Whoever is quick to the ball, that’s who’s going to get it. That’s the attitude you’ve got to have. May the best man get it; that’s how I look at it.” Now we have both Perk and Powe to be enforcers. I agree with Pierce... I love this kind of player.
The DailyNews Tribune also has an article on Powe and his rise from bench to beast.
"So (in the games) I have to try to get offensive rebounds, and transition buckets, and fight for loose balls," he continued. "By running the floor (in games), if I see a guard running up with the ball I can flash all the way to the post. Then it’s his choice. He can either hit me, or he doesn’t hit me and I get out of there and just get in position for the rebound." His improved play of late is already putting him in a better position for more looks all the way around. "We ran a game-ending play for him today," Rivers said. "I did it more to see if he could execute it, and he did. But I wouldn’t have done that two weeks ago. He is starting to get more comfortable and starting to understanding what we need out of him." I see several very good things in this quote. First, Powe knows his role and he is going to fight for every rebound and every loose ball. We saw him doing that in his first two games out there and I don't believe he is the kind of person that will ever back off that kind of effort. Second, he runs the floor and knows how to play with our speedy point guards. Third, Doc is running game ending plays for Powe. Doc doesn't run plays for guys just for fun. He is going to be around and is going to play.
Even the NY papers have some good things to say about Powe. Here is the blurb I found in the midst of a Vescey article.
The following quote by exceptionally enticing Celtic rookie Leon Powe warrants wood-framing in locker rooms throughout the NBA: "It isn't about what I can do. It's about what Doc [Rivers] and the team need." Selected No. 49 by the Nuggets last June and traded for an '07 second-round pick, the 20-point, 10-rebound (last year for California; both Pac-10 highs) macho forward is averaging nine and 8.3 in 18.3 minutes. Why was Powe taken so low? He's a bit undersized for his position. He hasn't developed an outside shot (that's a plus, in my book) and his knees have twice gone under the knife. "We need someone to play hard, be physical, be a man," Rivers accents. Considering the Celts' cavity in that category last season, as well as their rebounding issues, Powe's presence is very welcomed. At the same time, his transfer from Denver to Boston is shaping up as one of the draft's biggest hijackings. You just have to love this kid. His attitude is great, his work ethic is one of the best in the league (right up there with Perk), and he plays very tough in your face defense in the paint and goes for every single rebound. I honestly believe that the drafting of Rondo and Powe is going to go down as one of the biggest draft day steals in league history.
The Herald Notebook tells us that Danny is still looking to trade and that a 2 or 3 for 1 trade would solve our roster problems. Barring a trade within the next week, it seems as though Luke Jackson is the odd man out with Doc saying how much he likes Allan Ray for his ball handling abilities.
The Herald also has a reminder about the Celtics Pride radio post game show. It was on 1510 last season but has moved to ESPN radio 890 AM this season. If you are looking for some good Celtics talk after the game you can tune in here.
The Globe Notebook centers on the fact that Ratliff's injury may open the door for Kandi to make the team. He would get the veteran minimum and the League would pay part of it. Not a bad deal for some insurance at center. If nothing else, it would give them a veteran big body in practice for the centers to go up against.
The Globe reports that the reaction to the new ball has been mixed. Shaq and Nash have been very outspoken critics of it. I loved this part of the article: In an early Heat practice, O'Neal lost the handle on the ball three times in 15 seconds and predicted that turnovers would increase dramatically because of the new ball. But Shaq had played with that very same ball last February in the All-Star Game in Houston. He was 7 for 9 from the field in 22-plus minutes. Nash had six assists in 27-plus minutes in the same game. Nary a discouraging word was heard afterward. Could this be a case of mind over matter? When they didn't know it was a new ball they did fine with it but when they are thinking about it and dwelling on it, they are looking for negatives. The Celtics overall have been fairly positive about it.
The Patriot Ledger comments on Al's play in the last game. They state that it is no concidence that it happened when West came back. I also believe that it is no coincidence that it happened when he played along side Leon Powe. Powe's energy and effort are infectious.
JB has another good article over on CelticsStuff. I agree that a return to team oriented basketball. We have players who can run, pass first point guards, some very good scorers, and most importantly some very strong rebounders on this team. If Doc uses them all correctly we should see some very exciting basketball this season.
Finally, SI.com has a story about Bassy and the NY incident that has a positive spin. They say that credible league sources say that there was no connection between Bassy's loss of his necklace and the Fabolous shooting. They give the correct time frame that the shooting took place 2 hours after Bassy's robbery and not minutes as most articles have been reporting. This is good news in the midst of all the stories that have been trying to link Bassy to the shooting.

And a Couple More Things
Monday, October 23, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 12:20 PM
October 23, 2006 After doing the Odds and Ends for today, I came across a couple more good articles.
First, ESPN has an article by Chris Sheridan on the Celtics in their Training Camp section. He begins with this premise:
With the exceptions of Paul Pierce, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West, Danny Ainge is willing to trade every single member of the Boston Celtics. While Danny continually says that he likes our roster, he still repeats at regular intervals that he is listening to all calls and looking for the right deal.
"Right now it's just making proposals and listening to proposals. I've been proactive for four years, but one thing I learned from Red [Auerbach] is sometimes the best trades are ones you don't make. So it's activity in seeing what's out there and what's available, but not necessarily trying to move people. I want to see them develop and see them play. "That doesn't mean that I wouldn't if the right deal comes along, but I'm not looking to trade anybody on my roster right now." He also says that the owners are more inclined to want to be patient and let our young core of players mature and see what happens.
Every time I bring a deal to ownership they'll say I'm not sure I want to get rid of our young guys for that, that just give me another sign that they're really sticking to their guns. But I still listen to phone calls, and I still make proposals and run it by ownership. I tend to agree with them. I would like to see how these players develop and not make a mistake of being impatient and give away a future all star for a veteran on the back of his career. I have been patient for 20 years and can be patient for a little while longer. I agree with Danny when he says:
"I feel our talent is such that we can beat anybody, anywhere." We have the talent, we have the depth, and now if our coach can only manage it to it's full potential, we should do very well.
Then, I came across a good article from JB over on CelticsStuff Live. He starts out with this statement:
The four best quarters the Celtics have played this exhibition season have been with Rajon Rondo at point guard and at least one, usually two, legitimate front court players. I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. This unit was responsible for the 23 point comeback win against the Nets and it was largely responsible for the drubbing we gave the Knicks on Saturday.
Yes m’am, Rondo can run and he has lead the team to it’s best defensive efforts, but he seemingly can’t do it without toughness, rebounding and interior defense. The emergence of Leon Powe has given Doc Rivers another big man, who can run with that up tempo unit and pairing him with Jefferson seems like a great move. This statement from JB is right on!! When Doc first started with his small ball lineups in the second and third games, there was one big piece missing. He didn't have any rebounders in there. He was using Scal as his big in the lineup and it just dien't work. We lost the rebounding battle and the team couldn't run without the ball. It wasn't until he added Powe to the mix that we saw small ball success. Powe and Jefferson played very well together and the unit with Powe, Jefferson, Rondo, Allen (or Green), and West was very, very good.
I love this from JB's article:
As for Powe; in the midst of a four minute in four games stretch, where his coach was decrying that he didn’t get off the bench because he couldn’t grasp the system, he was given a few minutes in that New Jersey game and learned the “system” to the tune of 15 rebounds in 28 minutes. He backed that up with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 blocks and 3 steals against the Knicks on Saturday. Can you imagine what he could do if he could follow the game plan? This just tells me that Doc really doesn't know his players. He also doesn't run practices the right way. If he can't recognize how a player is doing from practice, how is he going to know who deserves playing time and who doesn't? The explains all the minutes that Scal plays. With the emergence of Powe, Scal shouldn't leave the bench. But I just know in the back of my mind, Doc's track record tells me that he is going to end up giving Scal more minutes and Powe less and we are going to lose because we can't get the rebounds.
As Leon, “Grown Man” Powe has played himself into solid minutes, Rivers should let him play himself out of those minutes. His contributions have been too important to leave his playing time decision to the whim of a coach who never met a novelty lineup that he didn’t love. Powe can play. He has proved that. He needs to get regular minutes and if he doesn't, we definitely need a new coach.

Odds and Ends on Monday
by FLCeltsFan 9:42 AM
October 23, 2006 I am still psyched from Saturday's game. It would seem from watching that game that everything is coming together for this team. One of the most important things is that we are rebounding and Leon Powe is the main reason. There is no drop in rebounding when the second team comes in. The sad thing is that with Doc as head coach, we can't be sure to ever see Leon Powe again. Doc insists he doesn't have a rotation and won't have one. I don't believe it is because of the players. The players will play more consistent if they know they have the playing time. But if they get 2 minutes one night and then a DNP and then 20 minutes the next and back to 2 minutes, no wonder they are inconsistent. Doc is the weak link in this team and if they don't continue to improve, it is time for Doc to go. Rant over... Here is what is going on around the Celtics Nation today:
The Herald reports that Doc loses his cool when asked about rotations. His lack of setting a rotation is part of the problem with this team. He also insists on playing vets like Scal whether they deserve it or not. One of my biggest fears is that once Scal recovers, Powe will go to the end of the bench and Scal will get his playing time. Powe needs to be in there because he has proved to be our best rebounder at this point.
Also in the Herald is a piece about Luke Jackson and his options for the future. While he wants to stay in Boston, being waived wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for him.
Shira also has a report on Doc's rotations or lack thereof. She also reports that Ratliff hopes to be back for the season opener.
The Desert News tells us that the Jazz are denying reports that they are shopping Boozer. The more I think about it, I am glad that no trade worked out. I believe that we will see big steps from our young players this season and they won't come with a huge contract like Boozer does.

Top 5 Keys to Success
by FLCeltsFan 9:18 AM
October 23, 2006 Derrenmatts has once again posted a great article on Celtics Green. I agree with his points and feel that this season we have a team that can accomplish these things. Pierce or Wally should be leading in scoring but we have bigs who should lead in rebounds (if Doc plays them) and PG's who should lead in assists. I also agree that Powe needs to stay with the team and come off the bench as I believe he is ready to contribute in this league. Al and Powe make a very good combo. I like the second team of West, Rondo, Powe, Al, and Tony (or Green for more offense). I am excited that more than any year in recent memory, we have the players to accomplish all of these Keys. Here is Derren's article:
| Narrowing down the top 5 keys to success for this season can be a bit stressful on the mind. There are so many things to include that it can easily be the top 15 keys to success. But I think I've narrowed it down to the most important ones, and I think you'll agree with this list.
Top 5 keys to a successful '06 ~ '07 season
1. Paul Pierce cannot lead the team in rebounding, assists, steals, and turnovers again, like he did last year. We have better talent surrounding him that he shouldn't be the team leader in all those categories anymore. Its a burden on him and his amazing individual accomplishments proved to be wasteful. Its no wonder why we only won 33 games last season, when Pierce's 6.7 rpg and 4.8 apg was the best on the team. The only stat he should be leading the team in is scoring--plain and simple. If he's the top rebounder or top assist man again, something is definitely wrong.
2. We need our big men to step up strong and reel in rebounds. Collectively, our big men need to be averaging 30~35 boards per game. This is why we need Powe staying with the team and not playing in the D-League, because we need his rebounding off the bench. Between Perkins, Jefferson, Gomes, Ratliff and Powe, they need to be grossing 80% of the teams rebounds. Its an eye popping statistic that proves that teams win when they outrebound their opponents.
3. We need 5 players scoring in double digits. We ended last season with just 3 players accomplishing this feat (Pierce, Wally and Delonte). Even though Celtics fans are screaming for better defense, we will always be a better offensive team as long as Danny Ainge is in charge. With that in mind, our offense needs to be efficient and well oiled. And when we are playing well offensively, and the ball is moving around and our PG's are running the team to perfection, many guys will dent the scoreboard. Shots will be coming from all over the court, as Wally, Delonte, Pierce and Gomes receive set up passes from Telfair and Rajon and Jefferson, Perk and Powe receive passes inside the paint as Telfair and Rajon penetrate into the lanes.
4. We go only as far as our bench takes us. Look at any of the top teams and you'll see that they have a strong bench. Starters are the heavy hitters, but the bench has just as much responsibility and ownership. If they don't pull their part, the team goes nowhere. Early indications seem to point toward Rajon, Delonte and Jefferson being the primary players off the bench (and hopefully Leon Powe will also be included in this group). Rajon is an incredible PG and I'm confident that he will impact the game off the bench with his speed, his passing, and his defense. Delonte gives us an instant scoring presence from the perimeter, while Jefferson gives us a rebounding and scoring presence in the trenches. Having Powe in their with Jefferson gives us 2 rebounding and scoring backup big men who will keep us from losing ground on the all important rebounding battle against our opponents. Hopefully Tony Allen, Gerald Green and Theo Ratliff help to solidify our bench's contributions as well.
5. Improve our defensive intensity and production. I'm thinking that we have enough quick hands on our team to be a top 3 team in the NBA in steals. As an example, against the Knicks on Saturday night, we tallied a mind boggling 20 steals and forced them into committing 31 turnovers. Delonte, Tony, Sebastian and Powe all had 3 steals apiece, while Rajon and Gomes had 2 each. We may not have a lot of size on this team, but we are quick and athletic and this may be our meal ticket to improve our defensive output. Steals are just as good as blocked shots.
Taking care of these 5 keys will certainly put us in the 45 - 50 win plateau. And realistically, these are attainable goals. Probably the most difficult one to reach is the 4th key to success (a strong bench). We are young and counting on young player to produce off the bench consistently is not a given. They will be up and down.
Overall, we will experience turbulence during the season. Relying on extremely young PG's to run the show will not always go smoothly. And our big men are prone to foul trouble. But as a whole, there are a lot of things to be hopeful for and once we start clicking and start nailing these keys to success, we will surprise many teams and critics around the league. And its only a matter of time--young players don't stay young forever. Eventually they will learn how to stretch their wings and fly on their own. source:Derrenmatts - Celtics Green

Sunday's Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 10:23 AM
October 22, 2006 The Herald Notebook reports that West's return to the lineup paid big benefits. He was everywhere and pretty much filled up the stat sheet. He didn't look the least bit rusty and that was good. His best play of the night was a great block on Eddy Curry. Also, Doc called Al out on his effort in games and Al responded with a very good game last night in spite of receiving 3 stitches after bumping heads with Miller in the first quarter and playing with a bandage over his eye the rest of the game.
Bulpett also reports that Pierce is very much enjoying his role as a mentor to Gerald Green. Green has improved in leaps and bounds since last year, and Pierce takes pride in the fact that he is able to help his possible successor learn the game. I love this team. The chemistry is great and players compete for playing time but also help each other and back each other up. It is a great atmosphere. When asked about Powe after the game, Perk had nothing but good to say about him. Telfair can be seen cheering Rondo on when he does something good. This is good stuff!!
The Herald also has a piece with several items of interest. Marcus Williams is using the draft snub to motivate him. The same can be said of Rajon Rondo and especially Leon Powe. And Al is using the unwarranted criticism the received last season as a motivation as well. The article also backs up the rumors that Danny tried to get Boozer this summer. It seems that his trade efforts have stalled with teams evaluating what they have and not looking to trade before they know. I do expect Danny to make another trade before the trade deadline, though. That is unless all our guys start playing so well he doesn't want to give any up. PETA may be the only people who really like the new ball. I love Pierce's comment on why it should be ok to use leather balls.
“Why not?” C’s captain Paul Pierce said of how the old ball was made. “We’re eating the rest of the cow anyway, right?”
The Globe tells us that the Celtics have been in the news a lot lately but not for good reasons. There was the Telfair incident, and we learn that Wyc was claiming that there was a settlement on the table in the Allen case when that doesn't appear to be the case. Hopefully soon the Celtics' play on the floor will take over the negative press and give the whole league something to talk about. Last night was a good start. Also noted is that Red is receiving an award from the Navy.
The Globe also has an article on Powe making a statement with his play. I have been on the Powe bandwagon since we drafted him. I am very glad that he got a chance to prove himself. This quote is interesting:
Playing New Jersey, it just brought me back to reality, knowing what I can do and knowing all the work I did in the summer is going to pay off. In practice there weren't that many reps because there were so many big people. I needed to go up and down the court a few times in live action. I've got work to do and, hopefully, I can keep my play up." It may explain the fact that Powe sat on the bench for so long without getting playing time and then they burst out when they get on the floor. Doc can't see what they can do in practice and he doesn't give them a chance until he doesn't have a choice not to. I love Powe and feel that he can help us this season. He does very well as the center on the small ball team. Powe and Al work very well together in tandem. Powe was very much a big part of the reason we have done so well the last two games by playing tough inside and garnering rebounds.
Be sure to check out this week's Team Previews. This week we have the Bobcats, Hawks, and Jazz. You can check out all of the previews here.
