Reports from the Season Ticket Holder's Picnic
Saturday, September 30, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:53 PM
September 30, 2006CelticsStuff Live has 3 reports from the Season Ticket Holder's Picnic posted on their site. Kim Malo's report gives a good description of Al's new physique. I can certify from live and in person that Al definitely looks in great shape. And for those bemoaning the loss of bulk to throw around on the boards and in the paint, I’ll add that it’s clearly muscle based cut and not just a matter of dropping pounds - he’s not skinny, he’s lean, and there is a real difference. RL35 gives another report and tells us that Bassy provided a memorable moment and seems to be taking on a leadership role already:
The only memorable moment was when Telfair guarenteed the playoffs this year. That was great to hear but big talk from a guy who may not start, however it appear that he is stepping up into a leadership role as Allen and Rajon deferred to Sebestian during their portion of the Q&A. Finally, JB had a chance to chat with the coaches and gives us some good intel:
I managed to get some conversation with Doc. I asked him about Tony Allen’s knee. He said that Tony’s knee condition was chronic and he would have “bad days” for his whole career. He contradicted himself though saying he hadn’t lost his athleticism. When I questioned this he said: “except on his bad days.” I was also concerned about Wally. I asked him if he was considering using him as a sixth man to save the wear and tear and he said he was, but that Wally was healthy now. When I reminded him that Wally had all or most of his cartelage removed after hi freshman year at college, he said something about his good days and bad days, also. I really hope Doc takes this seriously. I not only want Wally being able to finnish games, I want to see him fresh enough to contribute in the playoffs. Clifford Ray was pretty candid, agreeing with me that Jones and Pittsnoggle would compete for the last roster spot. Armond Hill stressed that Jones was one of our tougher players and that Pittsnoggle was having trouble defending. Leave it to JB to pin Doc down on his answers. From the sounds of it, Jones should get that final spot. He would be my choice as I will take a player who is tough, defends and rebounds over an outside shooter any day.

Shooting Guard Rankings
by FLCeltsFan 8:00 PM
September 30, 2006
| CBS Sportsline has a ranking of the Shooting Guards and Wally is ranked 15th. Not too shabby considering the number of Shooting Guards that are in the league. Kobe and DWade ranked 1 and 2. They had this to say about Wally:
15. Wally Szczerbiak, Boston: He seemed to fit in well after coming over from Minnesota, not that it translated into team success. He and Paul Pierce could form a productive wing combo, defensive proficiency notwithstanding. But Szczerbiak has to continue the positive momentum enjoyed last season following a few down years. I still haven't decided whether Wally should start or come off the bench. If they are playing well, West or Allen could start at the 2 and bring Wally off the bench. It would do 2 things. First, it would be better for Wally's knees and help prolong his career. Second, it would give us a veteran leader on both the first and second teams. I expect Doc to start Wally, though as that has been his tendency. [More] source:CBS Sportsline

Odds and Ends on a Slow Saturday just 3 Days from Training Camp
by FLCeltsFan 10:19 AM
September 30, 2006 Wow! We are just 3 days from training camp and there isn't a lot going on in the Celtics Nation. No newspaper articles and very few new blog articles. After a flurry of articles the past couple of days, I guess everyone is taking a rest. But there are a couple of things of note.
NESN has a short clip from the players who came in early to work out together. Not much but if you are like me, you are hungry for any little tidbit.
Starting tomorrow, the blogging community has gotten together to bring you 30 teams in 30 days. This is the brain child of Jeff over on Celtics Blog. Each day we will bring you links to the blogs who are participating. The Celtics will be first (as is only fitting) and 3 blogs will be previewing the Celtics including Loy's Place, CelticsBlog, and Celtics17. Be sure to check in tomorrow for Loy's preview of the Celtics.
Fox Sports has a piece ranking the Small fowards and Pierce is ranked #4 behind Lebron, Marion and Anthony. We have seen 3 rankings from major sources and Pierce was 2nd,3rd, and 4th in them. Any way you look at it, Pierce is one of the top players in the league and is getting recognition of it. They question his leadership qualities. We saw him emerge as a leader the end of last season. If the reports of Ricky undermining his authority are correct, then it isn't surprising that he had problems establishing himself as a leader.
CelticsStuff Live will be broadcasting live tomorrow night 7-9 Eastern time and will feature special guest Eric Weiss. They will also be taking your call in predictions for the CSL Guess the Season Record contest. Join us in the chat room for a fun time and call the show to ask your questions or chat with Justin, JB, The Duke, or Eric.

New Celtics Pep Cheer
by FLCeltsFan 10:01 AM
September 30, 2006Yesterday on the CelticsStuff Yahoo list eggcentric@aol.com sent in this post. She has kindly granted me permission to post it here. This season the Celtics have the unique option of starting 4 players straight out of high school and Egg wrote a cheer in there honor. Maybe the reasoning behind bringing in cheerleaders is so that our young core could get more of the college experience that they missed. We are going to be young so may as well have fun with it. Here is Egg's post as written.
| In honor of our four high schoolers (Perk, Jeff, Telfair, Green), and in accordance with the team's recent policy of emphasizing a more exciting in-game experience for their fans, The Boston Celtics today unveiled the team's new pep cheer. Celtics Executive Vice President Rich Gotham stated, "We pride ourselves in providing our fans with the highest level of entertainment from the moment they enter the arena until the final buzzer sounds. TEAM CHEER - We're the Celtics We can't be beat, Miami watch out And prepare for defeat Celtics is our name And Bball is our game We got winnin' on our mind And whoo, we're mighty fine Bang bang choo choo train Come on Lucky do your thang source: CelticStuff - Egg Discuss this topic on the Celtics Green Forums!

And the Preseason Rankings Begin...
Friday, September 29, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 4:37 PM
September 29, 2006ESPN came out with their first Preseason rankings and the Celtics were ranked #22 and they had this to say about the team:
"Can this really be Ainge's fourth season in charge? Perhaps it's not just Ainge's coach and all his kiddies who are due to pick it up a notch." I am not sure what they mean by Ainge picking it up a notch. Possibly they would want Ainge to trade away too much young promising talent for a veteran. Ainge has been working on deals all summer but his refusal to give up too much to bring back a veteran has kept him from making any of them.
Judging by the predictions that came into the CSL contest, the majority of Celtics fans are optimistic. I like the team and feel that they will surprise a lot of people as several of the young players take a step forward this season and come into their own.
It could be worse, though. The Blazers are dead last, the Sixers are 29th, Raptors 24th and Knicks 25th with the Timberwolves only slightly better than us at 20. I know that this is just a preseason ranking, but I would rank this team with all of the young talent much higher. I know that I felt this way last year, but that team was much better than its record due to the midseason trade and all of the injuries and I believe they will be much better this season.

Odds and Ends on a Friday Just 4 Days Till Training Camp
by FLCeltsFan 9:26 AM
September 29, 2006 There are a few interesting things out there today. The Herald has an article that centers on Doc being ready for the season but in it is a bomb about Ricky Davis.
There is also a quiet acknowledgement from the team that by midseason, Rivers had an unworkable situation on his hands. The Davis experiment, while bearing fruit on the floor after two seasons, had run its course in the locker room. According to a team source, Davis habitually undercut Paul Pierce’s authority, often talking and joking behind the Celtics captain’s back, and “rolling his eyes” when Pierce attempted to address the rest of the team. Similar things were said about Davis during his brief time as LeBron James’ teammate in Cleveland. “Paul was very aware of it,” said the source. “It began to affect his play and his demeanor. That was something that had to change.” I loved what Ricky brought to the floor during games. He was an exciting player who gave 110% during games. But if this is true, his divisive behavior in the locker room did more to undermine the team than his play on the floor helped it. Chemistry on a team is very important and we didn't need that kind of undercutting of Pierce when he was trying to take a leadership role. To Danny's credit he made the reason for trading Ricky the fact that he and Paul had similar games, not Ricky's behavior off the court.
Town Online has an interesting piece on the struggle for tolerance in Reading to right a terrible wrong.
To make up for the lack of tolerance that basketball great Bill Russell received here in Reading in the 1960s, Stoneham resident Bob Sansone would like to rename a portion of Route 28 - from Main and Franklin streets to the North Reading line - as Tolerance Road. Russell, an African American, lived in Reading first on Main Street then on Haverhill Street while playing for the Boston Celtics. During that time, vandals broke into his home and damaged his property. In addition, his residency was petitioned against by a small group of townspeople. I am reading a book on the history of the Celtics and it has a lot to say about the undercurrent of racism that the players had to face in the past from the 60's right through the 90's. My hat is off to Mr Sansone and I wish him luck in his fight for tolerance.
The Enterprise has a piece that brings up the high expectations for this year's team and hopes that the players can live up to them. The Celtics used a number of combinations, searching for players to take hold of spots, but Rivers doesn't see that happening this season. “The whole rotation thing will spell out,'' he said. “San Antonio and Detroit, they know their rotations now. With us last year, no one ever separated themselves. I do think there will be separation this year. That'll make our jobs easier.'' Doc expects several players to step forward and take the spots available. I also expect several players to break out this season. Even though there will be stiff competition at several positions, the chemistry on this team is very good. I am expecting great things this season!
In a bit of a bizarre story, Gerald Green's alma mater is being closed down for a number of infractions and a large debt. We read stories all the time about players going back to their old schools to talk to the students as Gomes did this off season and there is always a story about the player's high school retiring his jersey. I guess Gerald won't get to do any of those things and that is a shame.
You can go here to check out Danny's interview on FSN. The fact that he mentioned that Al is competing for minutes with Gomes and Scal caught my attention. Either Scal had some sort of resurrection over the summer or something is wrong, because Scal shouldn't be getting a lot of minutes this season. He also mentioned Rondo, Telfair and West all playing together at times. That would be a very interesting lineup. Short, but interesting and very, very fast.
JB over at CelticsStuff Live is trying to stir up some suport for an uprising against the high prices of sporting events and the refreshments you can find there. It would be nice to make things afordable for the common man again. And while you are there, don't forget to cast your vote in the Guess the Season Record Poll. Many predictions are already in. You have until tip off of opening night to make or change your predictions.
Recently there have been two mentions of Alan Akingbala being on our roster and competing in camp. One was in the Worcester Telegram article of 9/28 Forward Akin Akingbala and center Kevin Pittsnogle, both signed as free agents, figure to be the longest shots to make the roster. and the other was in a Globe article of 9/17. His name isn't on the Celtics' roster, and he won't be included in the preseason media guide. But it's impossible to miss 6-foot-11-inch Akin Akingbala working out at the team facility these days. He is, as they say, along for the ride. He played college ball at Clemson and then played three games for the Celtics in the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 4 points and 3.7 rebounds in 13 minutes a game. His big game came against the Pistons, when he had 10 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes. If Akingbala doesn't stick here, maybe Nellie should give him a call. He was 8 for 8 from the line during the Vegas Summer League . A lot was made of the Pittsnogle signing, but virtually nothing, other than these two obscure mentions has been made of Akinbala and where he figures in the plans of the team. Maybe he and Pittsnogle have been signed just to push players in camp, or maybe there is some promise there. It won't be long now until we find out.

The Value of a Greg Kite
by FLCeltsFan 9:01 AM
September 29, 2006
| I have been reading several books that cover the Celtics' championship teams of the 80's. In every one of them, the players mention how important Greg Kite was to their team. Greg Kite was never a starter, he never made an all star team, and averaged 2.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg over his career. But yet, Larry Bird credits Kite with helping to make them a championship caliber team. The value of Greg Kite wasn't in the games, it was in practice. Greg came to practice every day. His games were on the practice floor since he rarely got much playing time in the official games. He played very hard in practice and gave everything he had there on the practice floor and in doing so, pushed Robert Parish and Kevin McHale to have to play hard against him and thus lift their own games to a higher level. That's not to say that Kite never contributed in a game. When he was called on to fill in due to an injury or foul trouble, he played his hardest and did the best job he could. Danny played on those teams in the 80's and knows first hand the value of having players who can push each other in practice. We have players that we hope will develop into dominant players, but we also have players that I have seen mentioned as never being more than good role players. Both are needed to make a championship team. Players like Leon Powe and Scal may not get much playing time this season, but their value will come in playing against Al and Gomes in practice and pushing them to be all they can be. Danny made mention in an interview on FSN that Al is working hard to win playing time from Gomes and Scal. I hope Scal is pushing him in practice to be his very best. Dwayne Jones may not play much in games but he has a good work ethic and plays hard and will push Perk and Ratliff to play harder in practice.
Every off season Danny signs players like Pittsnogle, Allan Ray, Alan Akingbala, Will Bynum, etc to partially guaranteed contracts. I believe that many of these are meant to push the players currently under contract to play harder to win their spots. We may have a Greg Kite among the players that are on the fringe that Danny sees as being the one who can push the other players in practice to become a much better player. If so, that player will stick with the team even though they don't see much playing time in the present. Danny was quoted as saying that there will be worthy players who won't get playing time. But those players can still be a valuable part of the team by working their hardest in practice and being ready if they do get the call to do whatever is asked of them. We shouldn't underestimate the value of a Greg Kite type player in building a championship team. Every player isn't going to be a star, but they can all contribute in a big way even if they don't play big minutes. Don't underestimate the value of a Greg Kite. Odds and Ends for a Busy Thursday
Thursday, September 28, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:22 AM
September 28, 2006 Wow! after nothing in the papers for a long time, today has articles all over the place. Lots of things to talk about today so let's get right to it.
The Herald brings us good news that Perk is back to being Perk. This kid is such a hard worker that there was no doubt in my mind that he would be ready for the season and attack it with a vengeance. I am a bit worried that Delonte is still nursing a sore back. I have visions of Bird laying on the floor to alleviate his back pain over the last couple of years in his career.
MetroWest Daily has done a good job of covering the Celtics this summer. While the Globe and Herald virtually ignored them for much of the summer, we got some great info all summer from Scott and Lenny. Today's piece echos the others in that it talks about all the players getting into shape and working hard and that it mentions the many questions that still need to be answered. One tidbit caught my eye is that Scal has slimmed down this summer. I just don't know that Scal has that much he can contribute to the team that our younger players can't do better. Danny quoted Bill Russell "We don’t want veterans just because they’re veterans," he said. "I think it was Bill Russell who said experience is overrated. A lot of veterans aren’t very good players." Last year it seemed as though Doc was playing veterans just because they were veterans at times and hopefully Scal won't get time just because he is a veteran.
In the Globe, Shira has her usual upbeat piece letting us know that the Celtics are all in good shape coming into camp. The only question mark is Delonte with his sore back and back problems are always worrisome.
Celtics 17 presents part 2 of its article on Doc's 2 years as coach. Doc doesn't seem to take defense seriously. In his interview and talk so far he keeps stressing the offense and the fast break. This really worries me about this season because even with our players improved and a true floor general to run the team, if Doc doesn't institute a team defense and work on defending the pick and roll, we are going to be frustrated again this season.
JB has a good piece over on CelticsStuff Live that compares Gomes to Havlicek. I don't think this is that big of a stretch. There are a lot of parallels, but it remains to be seen whether Gomes takes his game to the level of Hondo's. I wrote an article that compared Perk to Cowens here a couple of weeks ago. I don't believe that is a stretch either. The parallels are there, we just have to watch their careers unfold to see if they follow the same course.
Bonzi Wells has signed with the Rockets but of note in this article is that Boston made an offer to him. Danny is still out there working the phones and trying to make a deal, but it is comforting to know that Danny won't make a deal just to make a deal.
The AP has a piece out that tells us that Doc wants a more settled rotation this season. He never settled on a regular rotation. "I don't think we ever had one and I don't think we were a team that should have had one. No one separated themselves enough to have one,'' Rivers said. "I do think there will be separation this year where last year I don't think I ever made that statement.'' Doc is expecting the players to separate themselves this year to work into a natural rotation. Although just about every fan in the country was calling for a set rotation last season, Doc doesn't feel that the team should have had one. The injuries and the trade last season may have contributed to the lack of a set rotation but this season, there shouldn't be any of those distractions and we should see more of a set rotation evolve. I do believe that several of our players are going to take the next step and we should see that in the lineups that Doc puts out. If Scal gets more playing time than Gomes just because he is a veteran, it is time for Doc to step down.
Leon Powe has been drafted... again. The Yakima Sun Kings of the CBA drafted him in the 5th round of the CBA draft. I guess if he gets cut from the Celtics, which I just don't see, he would find a second chance there. Even if he has to go to the DLeague this season, he shows enough promise to stick with the team. I really like this kid and am pulling for him to make it with the Celtics. Just the battles in practice at the 4 would be worth keeping him.
The Worcester Telegram points out some of the questions that will be answered as training camp begins. Doc likes the chemistry he sees as most of the players have been in Boston working out together for over a month and some have been here all summer working out. Red Auerbach will be at the Garden for the opening game as will David Stern.
I’ll need David to be there to keep Red off me when the dancers come out,” Grousbeck joked.

See Paul Run
Wednesday, September 27, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:26 PM
September 28, 2006Danny has gone all out to bring in point guards who can run the fast break. He has been building this team to run since he got here and it appears the parts are all in place to finally have a running team. In Doc's interview he had this to say:
"Yeah, we want to run, but we want to be an efficient running team. Quite honestly, I didn't think we were a very good fast-break team last year at all, even though we scored high numbers. I thought we were pretty bad on the break. That's where we have to improve. We have to value the ball; we have to make better decisions." They wanted to run last year but always seemed to lapse into a half court offense with Pierce driving into a double team. With Ricky and Paul in the line up, both had the ball in their hands too much and spent way too much time dribbling. Now, we will have a true floor general to run the team but the question is, will Pierce follow and allow the point guard to lead.
In his interview on FSNE, Wally seemed very excited to play with Telfair. He mentioned that when you run with a point guard like Bassy you get easy shots. One of the keys to the season will be whether Pierce and Wally can keep up with the point guards. We now have the centers who can block shots and get the rebounds to start the fast break. If we can get everyone running with the point guards, we should get some very easy baskets and prevent the defenses from setting up to stop us.
I am already getting visions of Perk grabbing the rebound and throwing the perfect outlet pass to Bassy who flies up the court and draws 2 defenders as he cuts into the paint and fires a bullet pass out to Pierce who nails the jumper. Next play, Perk rebounds again and fires the pass out to Bassy who hits a cutting Jefferson for a layup. Ratliff blocks the shot and Bassy takes off with the ball, passes out to Wally who hits a 3. If we can get everyone to run, it is going to be a very exciting season. I do believe that Pierce and Wally both will be on board with the running game. Both should be healthy and able to keep up with the fast break. We should see some exciting basketball this season.
See Paul Run! Run Paul Run!

Interview with Doc
by FLCeltsFan 8:54 PM
September 27, 2006 Celtics.com has an interview with Doc Rivers.
"No, I don't know yet. I think this is the year that several have to. Since I've been here, we have yet to develop a core. Before you can do anything, you have to develop that. Before you can make trades and figure out where you want to go, you have to figure out who you want to keep. Because we've made trades and decided to play a lot of young guys, we need them to develop and show us that they're keepers. And I think this is the year, and I really believe this, that several will show us that we can't do without them and that they're people worthy of hanging on to. Danny seemed pretty certain of his core but Doc doesn't know. I do agree that we have several who will prove that they are keepers this season. I like the thought of keeping the young players until we know which ones are going to take that next step. I don't want to watch our young players develop on another team and lead them to a championship.
Well, some of them won't play. It's just that simple. We have too many of them to play them all. "We're in the business of trying to win games and trying to build a team for the future that will win for a long time. This is still a competition, that will never change. So when you look at the numbers of guys that we have, some guys wont play. It's just that easy. But that's on every team." With 17 right now on our roster, it is obvious that 2 will have to be cut in training camp. beyond that, 9 or 10 will win regular playing time and barring any injuries, the other 5 or 6 will either go to the D League or sit on the bench and will have to get their playing time in practice. My one fear is that Doc will play guys just because they are veterans (Scal) even though they don't deserve the time. He did that last year and I really hope he doesn't do it this season.
It is Delonte's job. It was Delonte's job at the end of the year. But when camp starts, it's an open position. I know Delonte, so obviously, he probably has the upper-hand, because I know what he can do. But it's going to be a very competitive camp, and that's all good." Doc says it is Delonte's job to lose, but he also talks about how quick Rondo and Telfair are and how we lacked that last year. The battles in training camp for the point guard position are going to be fierce for sure.
"I'm just excited about the team. This is the first year since I've been here that you can actually see a group developing. By the end of the year, I think we'll know who will be Celtics for a long time." I am excited about the team as well. By the end of the year, we should see several of our young players break out and it will be much more obvious than it is now who are going to reach their potential and who will stall out.

Odds and Ends
by FLCeltsFan 8:06 AM
September 27, 2006 6 days until training camp and still nothing in the Boston papers. Even the Bruins are getting more press now than the Celtics. Here are today's bits from around the Web
The Cheap Seats has a piece about how much our young players could learn from Dave Cowens. I did an article some time ago that compared Perk to Cowens and feel that there are some very real parallels between these two centers. If you didn't read it before, check it out and see if you don't agree.
Celtics Pride has two new pieces today. One piece gives 2nd year stats for point guards around the league compared with Telfair's that should give some hope for this season. Also a good piece from FinDawg that sheds a ray of hope for this year as well.
CBS Sportsline lists Ryan Gomes as one of this year's sleepers for the Fantasy League. They have some good things to say about him. I think there will be a bigger battle for the Power Forward spot than we realize with Jefferson, Gomes and Powe all working hard to earn playing time. With Gomes slimming down and working more on his outside shot, he may also see time at the 3.
The Circus in NY continues. It is a wonder they get any time to play basketball there with all that is going on off the court. They have a former coach suiing them for a lot more than his contract was for along with their current coach being sued for sexual harrassment ... Kind of makes you feel sorry for Knicks fans... Well, then again, maybe not!
Our own Brian Scalabrine has made the All Time Nice Guys list on Fox Sports. We always knew he had to be good for something. Most Celtics fans are hoping that he fills the role of nice guy on the bench this season and not out on the floor tossing up ill advised 3's.

The Demise of Defense as We Know It
by FLCeltsFan 7:55 AM
September 27, 2006 The old adage that Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships is very true. Everyone wants to see the high flying dunks and the run and gun offense because it is exciting. But it takes tough defense if you are going to win a championship. I remember the Pistons/Spurs series from a couple of years back where both teams played very tough defense and we were seeing final scores in the 60's and 70's and everyone was saying what a boring series it was. I really enjoyed those games because I love defense and when it is played the right way, is absolutely exciting. I mean, it is the equivalent of a no hitter in baseball. Last season the league adopted a dramatic shift in how it interpreted the rules of the game. The new rules no longer allow for a defensive player on the perimeter to use his hand, arm, or any sort of physical contact to impede or block the movement of a player who is cutting or handling the ball. Gone are the defensive battles like we used to see in the old days of Dumars guarding Jordan or the battles between DJ and Magic. The new rules give an advantage to the quicker wing players. Because of this, Danny's decision to move toward a fast break team makes a lot of sense. It is no surprise that the quicker wings last season, Lebron, Vince Carter, Gilbert Arenas, and Dwayne Wade were a lot more prominent in their team's offense and why they went to the line a lot more. These quicker wing players have a distinct advantage in that defenses have to give them leeway under the new rules. Last year in the playoffs, it was very evident that the way the game is being officiated made a difference in the outcome. Wade drove to the basket time after time and was able to draw touch fouls each time and if he couldn't finish, he went to the line. There was nothing Dallas could do to stop him and when they tried, they put him on the line. While the new rules have changed the way defense is played on the perimeter, defense under the basket is still played the same way. Centers and bigs can still be physical under the basket. Doc made a comment that they were working on a defense to funnel players into the center where they would be met by Perk or Ratliff. That sounds like a good plan in that we have physical players under the basket to play tough defense and block shots. The new rules do seem to benefit the Celtics as they are currently built. We have very quick wing players and point guards who can quickly bring the ball up the court and other teams will be unable to employ the hand check or physical defense that players could previously. Rondo's defense is made for this type of play as well. He is so quick and has such quick hands that he easily can strip a ball without touching the opposing player. The bottom line is that defense as we once knew it is no more. We will see teams struggling to run more as that gives them an advantage on the wing. Danny is ahead of the curve as he has been building this type of team for the last 3 years and he completed it by adding 2 of the quickest PG's in the league this offseason. We will run more and get past defenses on the perimeter and use our shooters on the wings to open up things inside for our bigs. With the advantage going to the offensive player in the open court, we need to play a team defense and that is where Doc has got to work on it in practice. He can no longer depend on the individual players to play in your face defense on the perimeter. It will almost always lead to free throws for the other team. We need to work on defending the pick and roll as we got burned on that play just about every time last season, yet Doc didn't see the need to work on it in practice because players learn defense while working on the offense. How Doc approaches defense this season is going to in a large part determine our success. At least with Clifford Ray teaching our bigs how to play defense in the post, we can have hope that things will be better.

Analysis of Telfair from a Blazer Fan

September 27, 2006 Derrenmatts from Celtics Green contacted mookie, the owner of Rose Garden Blog, to get a Blazers' fan's analysis of Sebastian Telfair. He sent back a great piece which I have included for you below. Excellent analysis from a fan who watched him in his first 2 years!
| When Sebastian Telfair entered the league, he was seen as that next great NYC point guard. He had the pedigree of following his cousin Stephon Marbury into the L and coming out of Lincoln High, he’d already been hyped by no less than SLAM Magazine as a prodigy to watch. Understandably, when Portland drafted Bassy with the 13th pick in the 2004 Draft, the fans were excited. There was a lot of uncertainty attached to Telfair, but there was a truckload of excitement. And excitement was what Portland desperately needed at that point. After being a perennial playoff team, 2003-04 was the first non-playoff season in a very long time (since 1982) – the longest playoff run in professional sports was broken and the fans wanted something to cling to as a hope for the future.
2004-05 : Stand clear - Rookie Superstar in training
Telfair certainly was not thrown in at the deep end. More than that, he had both Damon Stoudamire and Nick Van Exel manning the point during his rookie season, meaning that the weight of expectations did not fall on him in the same way as if a team like the Clippers or Magic had drafted him. Bassy provided some exciting moments that rookie season – he even started 26 of his 68 games. There were moments where he would fly at what seemed a million miles an hour, only to collide with a brick wall of defenders and turn the ball over. Equally there were moments where you would see the spark of what we were hoping for, as he would streak to the basket and throw a playground style behind-the-back pass to a perfectly positioned teammate. All of these highs and lows were taken with a grain of salt. He was a rookie and everyone was happy to accept the learning process.
2005-06 : The handcuffs are off – this is your team Bassy
In Bassy’s second year in Portland , suddenly there was no more Stoudamire, no more Van Exel. It was clear that the Blazers’ management was making a statement. The future of the team was to revolve around Telfair at the point and his apprenticeship was now over. Every pundit in the nation predicted a massive season for Bassy on the back of a very good final month of his rookie year. He was handed the reigns as starter – but even during the pre-season it was apparent that things were not going to be as smooth as hoped. Telfair was still prone to the occasional crazy turnover or poor decision – and his FG% was appalling. Coach McMillan did have some other options. Steady but unexciting Steve Blake had been brought in as insurance and there was also rookie Jarrett Jack to be groomed for the future. The end result was a point guard by committee scenario in Portland .
Telfair started 30 games in 05-06, only 4 more than his rookie season. Blake got the majority of the burn with 57 starts and Jack started 4. There were definite signs of increased maturity in Bassy during the season. His turnovers per 48 minutes reduced from a monstrous 4.51 as a rookie to 3.36 last season. The overwhelming factor for fans watching Bassy – as far as I can guage -- is frustration. The guy has so much potential. We’re all behind him, urging him on. There are three things I can say without a doubt about Telfair: he is a natural passer and point guard, he can ignite a team with his lightning pace and flashy skills and he has nowhere near reached his potential as yet.
Not long after Bassy was traded to Boston , I asked the question on the Oregonian’s Blazers Forum (which was also re-published at SLAM Online), “Will you be bitter if Bassy succeeds?” The overwhelming response from Blazer fans was NO. On the contrary, we want to see him do well – we can see the potential there for a very, very good NBA player. I stop short of using the term ‘greatness’ as I don’t think he has provided solid signs as yet of deserving that moniker, but the boy will bring a totally different tempo and identity to Boston – that is for sure. Portland may not have been the place for him. There is no doubting that there have been some poor locker-room influences around in Telfair’s two years with the team. A change of scenery may lead to a career for Bassy somewhat emulating that of his cousin. source: mookie - The Rose Garden Blog

A Few Interesting Articles from Around the Web
by FLCeltsFan 9:48 AM
September 26, 2006 Again, the Globe and Herald are silent on what is going on in Boston as the Celtics prepare for training camp but there are a few things out there. Celtics Blog has a good interview with Clifford Ray. I really believe that the acquisition of Clifford Ray as a coach will be one of Danny's best moves this off season. We have young bigs who need guidance and Clifford Ray is going to help them to break out this season. I loved the way he was up on the side lines yelling instructions in the Summer League and I hope that continues. I also hope that Doc allows him input into how the bigs play.
The 5 position is not a glamour position but when you see who the teams are that play for a championship each year they all have a guy playing the 5 who understands what he needs to do for the team to be successful....Many of the responsibilities of this position do not appear on the stat sheet and you have to watch the game to understand how well or poorly the 5 has played. These are some of the things that Perkins will learn in time . Clifford Ray understands what the bigs need to do and will help them to do it.
The good shooters will kill you if they are left open but we can always get help from rotations if you make him put the ball on the floor. This group that we have has to learn to rely upon one another in this regard. It has to be a group effort as we do not have the personnel to succeed individually yet. He understands the need for team defense and hopefully will help Doc to institute it. This was a big need last season and Doc did make a mention of instituting a new defense this season. Since we didn't play any defense last season, any defense has to be better. From all reports, Ratliff is also teaching our young bigs and with both of these veterans behind them, we should see them take a leap this season.
The Globe Green Room has a list of 10 Story Lines to follow this season. I think they are a little hard on Al but they do ask some valid questions. Who will be the point guard? Will Doc improve his in game coaching? How will the Dancers be accepted by the crowd?
Celtics 17 takes a look at Doc's first 2 years in order to try to predict what year 3 may bring. There were a lot of variables in the first two years that won't affect this season. The return of Antoine, Gary Payton at the Point, the departure of both Antoine and Payton, Blount's disgruntled play, the trade mid season that shipped Ricky and Blount out and brought in Wally, all of the injuries last season. Hopefully this season will be smooth sailing as far as injuries. It has to be better, anyway. We have very strong centers this season where we had Blount and Raef last season. We have two very fast pass first PG's this season along with a very determined Delonte West, we have a healthy Wally, Perk, Al, Pierce, and Tony. We have Gomes from the beginning. We have some promising rookies. We DON'T have Blount and his attitude, turnovers, and aversion to rebounding. We do still have Doc, though, but hopefully he has learned from his mistakes and will be a better coach this season. He does have Kevin Eastman and Clifford Ray on his bench, both of which can be a huge asset to him if he will let them be.
The Worcester Telegram has a good piece on Tommy Heinsohn and his artistic endeavors. His art work is really very good. Delonte is another Celtic with very good artistic talent. Maybe one day they can do an exhibit together.
Bill Russell is getting some much deserved recognition with a travelling exhibit from the Smithsonian. The exhibit focuses on 35 athletes who brought their sport to a higher level. And the world to a higher level.
Russell fits the bill well.
"You try to make the world a better place when you leave it than it was when you came into it," he told a gathering at the preview.
Hoopsworld has a piece on Allen Iverson. Although it isn't a Celtics piece (even though Iverson was almost a Celtic by most reports), there was an interesting paragraph that caught my eye.
It’s not too often that younger members of our society grasp the concept of putting others first so that we can advance ourselves. In basketball every great team needs a great floor general. Someone’s who’s willing to sacrifice some of their personal glory so that the team can flourish. Someone willing to make the extra pass so that a teammate can get the easy deuce. Someone who’s not worried about seeing their name in flashing lights as long as their team gets the W. The Celtics seem to have several of this type of player - the ones who will do what it takes to make the team better, regardless of the role they are asked to fill. Delonte West comes to mind first and foremost. He isn't out for glory or stats, he just wants to win. I believe the majority of our team this season is that way. Gone are Blount and Raef who complained when they didn't get enough touches or playing time. The group we have has great chemistry and every one will take the role given them and work their hardest to fill it and help the team win. No prima donnas here.
This is a fun piece with a list of the worst moments in sports. One stood out as being sad and funny at the same time.
Rudest welcome back “For the love of God (”Gawd” as written by Sports Illustrated), go back on strike!,” a Boston Celtics fan implored the Celtics as they were playing a forgettable first game back after the NBA strike, during the proud franchise's forgettable days with then-coach Rick Pitino. Thinking back to the Pitino years makes this team look extra good. I mean, compared to Pitino, even Doc looks good. I guess everything is relative.
The Globe had a story that was mostly football and about Tom Brady, but it did have some Celtics references that I thought were worth mentioning about body language.
Certainly Bill Russell appeared to be the measure of calm when he stepped on the parquet and dominated. Only later did we learn he was a bundle of nerves before every game, and usually vomited before he left the locker room.
Yet there are times when the way an athlete carries himself says it all. There was no mistaking Larry Bird's body language in 1989, when, angry at coach Jimmy Rodgers for turning him into a ``point forward," he purposely passed up open jumpers and stubbornly passed off to teammates in a game at Detroit.
I had a conversation with Celtics coach Doc Rivers recently about Paul Pierce's body language. Rivers conceded that before he coached Pierce, ``I used to say, `Man, that guy is always sulking.' But when you get closer, you realize it's not really true.
``But, as I explained to him, perception matters. I told Paul, `You have no idea of the value of your smile.' When Paul laughs or smiles, it lights up our team." Two things here, as great as Larry Bird was, he was definitely not the most coachable player and Doc's talk with Pierce must have worked because he smiled a whole lot more last season than he had any season before.
Don't forget to vote in the CelticsStuff Live Guess the Season Record Contest. The site has been updated to include a little history of the poll and also the merging with Snoopy the Celtics' Beagle to make this the biggest contest ever.

Letter to Red Auerbach - This is a Classic
Monday, September 25, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 9:56 PM
September 26, 2006I found this on the Globe message board posted by SlipperySam. It is such a great post I had to share it here. This is really classic. I guess it just proves the point that the more things change the more they stay the same...
| Letter to Red Auerbach—April, 1956:
Dear Red,
Well, you idiot, you blew it again. Just good enough to get a lousy draft pick. You should have tanked so you could get the #1 pick. Number 1 is everything; the other 7 don't matter, and you're drafting 6th out of 8. MIght as well not bother. So I hear you're going to take Heinsohn with a territorial pick. Local kid may boost attendance a little, but what has he ever done? A slow guy when you need speed...a hook shot specialist when you need rebounding underneath. You jerk.
I even heard a ridiculous rumor that you had wanted to take some non-shooting center from the west in the draft. In the first place, you can't get him because of your lousy draft position. Someone's probably dumb enough to draft him before you would get a shot. In the second place, maybe he can play a little defense (except on his own man because he's too short), but what would you do—shuttle MacAuley and him in and out on offense and defense like I'm afraid they may sometime start doing in football? Anyway, it's not as though this western guy is going to cover up all your other players' deficiencies on defense. That's never been done, so it can't ever be done. In the third place, only a shooter will ever suffice at the key center position.
You could have tanked, gotten the #1 pick, and used it on Sihugo Green, who is a real good playmaker and can play rings around that bum Cousy on defense. Cousy's got flash, but flash doesn't win championships. He's not legit. And MacAuley's not good enough to lead you to a championship. He's not legit either. If you'd just use your balding head and tank for a couple more years, you could get the real deal—Wilt something-or-other who'll be graduating from Kansas soon. He's four inches taller than this guy from the west, and he can dominate at both ends of the floor. Now Wilt's legit. Once he comes into the league, you'll never get a sniff of the championship—never. It's all about winning, and you'll never win. Nah nah nah nah nah!
And, by the way....Rochester, St. Louis, Minneapolis, New York, Syracuse, Fort Wayne, Philadelphia. What do all those teams have in common? First, I just thought I should mention every other team in the league because I know for a fact that mentioning a lot of teams automatically impresses people and adds credibility to anything I write. Second, these teams don't have you mucking up the works. You should use all those other teams as blueprints for the Celtics. You try to think outside the box too much. History repeats itself 100% of the time. History is the only predictor—far better than watching the games.
I hate you Red. What a loser.
I am the great, the all-powerful, the omnipotent, dasher of all hope......

The New Ball... Will It Change the Game?
by FLCeltsFan 5:24 PM
September 25, 2006
| Not much has been said about the new basketball that is being introduced in the NBA this season. It is the first change in over 35 years. Paul Pierce was one of those who was involved in the unveiling of the ball in the NBA Store on draft night. Each player, including the new rookies, has been sent a personalized ball to work with before the season starts. These new balls were used in Summer League and players have been able to work with them all summer to get used to them.
Early reports about the ball say that it is stickier than the classic ball, which most players said was slick especially when wet from sweat. I can see a lot more turnovers because of the ball slipping out of sweaty hands. This is where Rondo, with his huge hands will come in. He will be able to control even a slippery ball with those huge hands.
The new ball is bouncier according to some of the shooters who have been using it this summer. A shooting coach that works with several NBA players noted that the ball was bouncier, but that because so many different balls are used by players, the ball is not as important to shooting percentage as form. Players with good form shouldn’t see much of a change in shooting percentages, but players who have bad form, or tend to shoot flat shots will likely see this new ball rimming out. I can see Scal's numbers going down now. Since Rondo has worked almost 3 hours a day on his shooting, hopefully with this new ball, and reports from Kevin Eastman say that his form is good, he should be fine with the new ball. I believe that we will see who worked on their shot this off season and who didn't by their shooting percentages with the new ball.
Since the ball is bouncier, it will also change how it comes off the rim and glass, effecting rebounding numbers. Hopefully, Clifford Ray has been working with our guys this season on rebounding with this new ball. Gomes especially rebounds like Bird always did by judging where the ball will come off the rim and being there to get it. If it doesn't bounce the same as the old ball, this may affect Gomes' rebounding numbers.
Every team and every player will be faced with the same problems and with getting used to the new ball and its characteristics. Players who work the hardest and got used to the ball this summer will play better at first than those who didn't. I am very glad that we have some very hard working kids who have worked enough in the off season to be used to the ball by the time they tip off for the season's first game.

A Few Links
by FLCeltsFan 9:32 AM
September 25, 2006 It is a very sad state of affairs that 8 days from the start of training camp there are no articles in any of the Boston papers about the Celtics. But there are a few things of note to be found around the internet.
Check out the Audio Vault on WEEI Radio website. If you click on Dale and Holley, you will see a 9/21 interview with Telfair. If you click on The Big Show, you will see a 9/20 interview with Ainge.
Celtics Pride has an interesting piece that compares Big Al's stats to those of other Power Forwards in their second years.
If you want a smile, check out Red's Army's picture of Little Orphan Scallie. Most Celtics fans would like to see Scal as the odd man out. He certainly didn't win many fans last year, showing up for camp out of shape and never really getting into shape. Plus, for every good thing he did on the floor, it seemed that he did 2 others that weren't so good.
Bent over on CelticsBlog Cheap Seats tries his hand at some Celtics poetry.
Finally, don't forget to post your predictions for the CSL Guess the Season Record Contest. You can post your prediction here on Loy's Place in the comments section or send an email to FLCeltsFan@celticsstufflive.com.

No Respect
by FLCeltsFan 9:24 AM
September 25, 2006 The Celtics have become the Rodney Dangerfield of the NBA. They just don't get any respect. None of the previews seem to give the Celtics much credit. Not many of them seem to give our young players much of a chance to break out. Even many Celtics fans have fallen off the wagon and no longer expect anything from this team.
Yesterday and today I eagerly checked the Boston newspapers - all of them - for news of the Celtics. After all, it is only 8 days until training camp and most of the players are in Boston working out. There must be news. How is Tony Allen doing? Any news on his trial? How is West's back? How are the scrimages going? Are any players standing out? There has to be something out there. The Herald talked about the scoreboard yesterday, and the Globe had a piece on Bonzi Wells' search for work. Nothing on the Celtics. Again today, nothing on the Celtics... nada.
ESPN has been doing a series titled 2010. The first part asked writers which of the bottom 10 teams would be most likely to win a championship by the year 2010. Even the Knicks were given more of a chance than the Celtics. To give the Knicks more of a chance to win a title than the Celtics is pretty bad.
Then, they looked at which players would break out and rise from mediocrity. You would think that someone would pick one of the Celtics young players who are on the verge of breaking out... Perk... Gomes... West... Al... Green... Telfair... Rondo... Powe... Allen... any one of our core of young players could possibly break out this year. All have the potential to become stars. But did any of the writers pick them? They picked Carlos Arroyo, Gerald Wallace, JR Smith, Hakim Warrick, Raymond Felton, Beno Udrich... The list goes on but not a single Celtic.
Even Danny said that the rest of the league doesn't value our young players as much as he does. West got some props last season but is seen as injury prone. Al has been construed as soft. Gomes got a lot of attention last season, but apparently not enough. Perk should be seen as an up and coming center but he isn't and I don't know why. When the top 20 Center Rankings were posted, Perk wasn't one of them, in spite of having better stats, even in limited playing time than some that were listed. Green is seen as somewhat of a novelty. Wind him up and watch him dunk, but no one sees him as much of a player otherwise.
In David Thorpe's chat he was asked this question:
Being from Boston, me and the rest of the city crave the days of Bird, Parrish and Mchale. Which of the young guys on the Celtics do you see having the most potential to be a star?
Here is his answer:
Ryan Gomes-or nobody. Gerald Green has so far to go. I heard Jefferson lost weight-which is good-but is really lazy still-which is bad. Telfair and Rondo still have a lot to prove. I was kidding about Gomes-he may be their best guy in 4 years from that group, though. He gives left handed complement to Gomes by saying that in 4 years he may be the best guy. But on the other hand, he is very negative about the prospects of our young players. Not a word about Perk who is poised to break out. He calls Big Al lazy and obviously hasn't seen what he has done this summer. Rondo and Telfair and Green all do have a lot to prove, but I happen to believe that they are going to prove it and in the not too distant future.
In the same chat he was asked if Telfair would flourish in Boston. He dismisses Telfair saying that he doesn't buy him right now because he likes his PGs to shoot a high FG% and make other guys better. I believe that Telfair will make other guys better. I would much rather have a PG who can find the open man and be a pass first PG than one who looks for his own shot.
In another chat wrap, Brian Windhorst has this to say:
It would be nice to see some of the Celts never ending parade of new fresh faces take the step from prospect to great pro. For various reasons it hasn't happened and Danny Ainge keeps importing a new group every year. Supposedly Jefferson is healthy and has lost 30 pounds so he'd be worth watching. They must like Perkins because he just got a four-year extension, which surprised many in the league. Who did Perkins getting an extension surprise? Certainly not any of the myriad of Celtics fans who have watched him over the past 3 years. Perkins is as good as if not better than Dalembert or Nene who got 10 mil a year. Perk was a steal at 4 mil a year for his extension and he is going to make a lot of these critics stand up and take notice this season.
All I have to say is that there will be a lot of people who are surprised by the Celtics this year. Perk and Al will both have a break out year and then the nay sayers will have a lot of crow to eat. All of our young players are hard workers. Every one will come in to this season better than they were last season. I can't wait to be able to say "I told you so!"

It's a Wally World Sunday
by FLCeltsFan 2:47 PM
September 24, 2006
| Today there was a good piece in the MetroWest Daily on Wally. His rehab has gone well but he will probably never be totally pain free at this point in his career. He shook off reports that his knees are bone on bone and said that there is some cartilage left. "When it's bone-on-bone," he said, "then you are talking microfracture surgery, and I didn't have that."
In spite of his excitement about working out and playing well, he was hampered by a slight post workout limp. "This is the first test I have played through the last three days and it feels pretty good," he said late in the week. "It's probably just the standard soreness from running up and down and putting this much strain on it." Hopefully he will be ready by training camp to play without having to worry about his knee and without it causing him to alter his game as it did last season.
Along with Scott's article, there is a two part interview posted on FSNE. In Part 1 you can see a clip of the new slimmed down Al Jefferson working out and he sure looks good. In Part 2 Wally talks about the teams talent and depth and he tells how excited he is to play with Telfair. [More] source:MetroWest Daily and FSNE

Meeting Needs
by FLCeltsFan 10:18 AM
September 24, 2006Last year the Celtics had 4 glaring weaknesses in their game. Defense, Rebounding, Turnovers, and inconsistency. The question that faces us going into this season is whether or not they did anything to improve in those areas. Our team defense last season was virtually non-existent. We could score almost at will, but couldn't stop the other team from scoring when we needed to. In particular, we couldn't defend the pick and roll at all. Doc made a comment that felt that the team would get the defense as they worked on offense because after all, while they were practicing offense, half the team had to play defense. Danny made quite a point at the end of the season that the defense had to improve. Doc did say that the team would be working on a new defense this season. Since they didn't have any last season, any defense would be an improvement. As for our players, Al has mentioned a couple of times that he has worked on defense this summer. Gomes also mentioned working on defensive moves. Rajon Rondo is a very strong defender and could set the tone for a much better defense over all. We added defense by subtraction as well. Blount and Raef are no longer with us and both were defensive liabilities. We were 26th in rebounding last season. Doc played Raef and Blount the majority of the minutes at center last season and neither of them were rebounders. Al was injured most of the season. Perk was injured just as he started to get minutes. Both should be healthy this season and finally get more playing time. both should also average double figures in rebounds and that will be big for us as a team. The main improvement in rebounding should come as the result of the hiring of Clifford Ray. As an assistant coach who specializes in teaching big men, he has had miraculous results. If you follow his career, teams where he has been an assistant have been among the league's best in rebounding. Before and after his tenure, they were often among the worst. That could be a huge factor for us. He has been working with our young bigs all summer and we can expect some good results. Powe is an excellent rebounder and should be able to help in that area as well. We have other players who are good rebounders at their positions including Jones, West, Rondo, Pierce, and Gomes. At the trading deadline, the Celtics were 29th out of 30 teams in turnovers per game at over 17 per game. By the end of the season they were still 29th but had just over 16 per game. In order to win, they have to take better care of the ball. Have we addressed this issue? I believe so. For one thing, two of the bigger offenders were traded mid season. Having 2 pure points to run the team should help as well. We should see fewer times when Pierce will dribble up the floor and into a triple team and turn the ball over. Hopefully another year of playing together and of experience will keep them from making the rookie errors that caused many of the turnovers last season. Finally inconsistency plagued the team all season. They would win big one night and everyone would be ready for a big surge and then they would lose just as big the next night. They couldn't string together 3 wins in a row all season. We are very young and with youth often comes inconsistency. But also, many of our young players are entering their 3rd or 4th seasons and should be getting past rookie and sophomore mistakes. As with turnovers, another year of playing together and of experience should help with the inconsistency. Having a pure point guard to run the offense should help as well. We should see improvement in all of these areas this year. Between removing problem players, bringing in players who will help and with each of our young players working hard this off season, and with Clifford Ray here to coach, we should expect to improve in all of these areas.
