Pre-Draft Workouts Resume in Waltham with Brewer
Saturday, June 17, 2006
by FLCeltsFan 3:47 PM
I haven't much thought about taking Brewer with the 7th pick but it may be a possibility. He is a tall and very athletic 1/2 and that is the type of player that Danny likes. June 17, 2006
WALTHAM - Pre-draft workouts resumed at the Sports Authority Training Center at HealthPoint in Waltham on Saturday morning, as Arkansas guard Ronnie Brewer joined Miami's Guillermo Diaz, UNC's David Noel and Providence's Donnie McGrath.
"It was probably one of the most competitive workouts that I've been to," said Brewer, who has already worked out for Houston, Orlando, Chicago and Minnesota and has a few more scheduled before the June 28 NBA Draft.
Brewer, labeled the "best athlete in the draft" by some prognosticators, is expected to be a lottery pick, and he has a solid basketball pedigree. His father, Ron Brewer, was a part of the famed "Triplets" that led the Razorbacks to the 1978 Final Four, and he was the #7 pick in the 1978 NBA draft. [More] source: aol nba

Celtics to Host 2 Day Free Agent Camp
by FLCeltsFan 12:48 PM
I would love to bring Jay Williams in next year. I hope Danny makes him a serious offer. What interests me in this article is the reference to Lynn Greer as perhaps the best player coming into the camp. He may be a possibility also. We were thinking of free agent PG's in the US but there may be some who have been playing overseas who could help us. June 17, 2006
In the midst of working out potential draft picks, the Celtics will shift gears Monday and Tuesday with a look at several free agents in a two-day camp. Of particular note in Monday’s session will be Jay Williams, the former Naismith Award winner and No. 2 pick in the 2002 NBA draft, whose career with the Bulls was truncated in 2003 by a near-fatal motorcycle accident. Williams spent the last two years recovering from serious leg injuries and a fractured pelvis and then trying to rehabilitate his game. He is now attempting to catch on with an NBA team for the first time in two seasons.
Considering that he has been away for so long, Williams wouldn’t be considered an expensive proposition. He has worked out for a host of teams, including Toronto, with generally favorable reports on his progress.
“I haven’t heard from any of the other teams about how he’s done, but we’ll get him out there and see how he’s feeling,” Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. “I think he’s an inspiring story, and I hope he makes it back into the league. He was a great player who was on the way to a fantastic career.” [More] source: Boston Herald

Pierce to have MRI on injured left elbow
Friday, June 16, 2006
by Loyalist 2:11 PM
June 16, 2006
| MIAMI -- Paul Pierce made a last-minute decision to attend Games 4 and 5 of the NBA Finals, arriving on a flight from Los Angeles at 1 a.m. yesterday morning and driving straight to Antoine Walker's home in the Miami area for a quick game of cards.
In contrast to his quick call on the trip, Pierce is taking his time with much bigger decisions about his future. He plans to undergo an MRI and further X-rays on his injured left elbow when he returns to LA to determine if he should undergo surgery. Then, he plans to visit with executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge in Boston to start discussions concerning a contract extension. [More] source: boston globe

Jay Williams to Work Out for Celtics
by FLCeltsFan 1:57 PM
It is a pity that we have to read the Philly papers to find out that JayWill is going to work out for the Celtics. It seems like the Boston papers should be reporting news like this for the Celtics' fans hungry for news about their team.
June 16, 2006
| A source indicated that Williams was scheduled to work out tomorrow for the New Jersey Nets and Monday for the Boston Celtics. Questions have remained about whether Williams has been able to regain his explosiveness and lateral quickness. He was scheduled to meet yesterday with Sixers president/general manager Billy King. Gomes Visits Perkins, School For The Blind
by Loyalist 4:00 AM
June 16, 2006
| Compared to anyone he's a tall, tall man, but compared to the elementary school students at the Perkins School for the Blind, Boston Celtics star forward Ryan Gomes was a giant.
The 6-foot-7 forward must have felt like Gulliver, handing out an $8,000 grant to Perkins officials with Fox Sports Net host Greg Dickerson inside a Lilliputian-sized gymnasium Thursday afternoon.
Perkins received the grant as part of the "Every Body Move" program for the 2006-07school year. The state program has handed out 26 such grants to schools throughout the commonwealth promoting physical education along the way. [more...] source: watertown tab

Celtics Beat: What To Expect from #7
Thursday, June 15, 2006
by Loyalist 2:17 AM
June 15, 2006
| The Celtics currently have the #7 pick in this year's NBA draft. While it's possible that a pre-draft trade could change our drafting position, it seems appropriate to take a quick look at the statistical history of the #7 pick.
There have been many significant number 7 picks, led by the Celtics all-time scoring leader John Havlicek (Boston, 1962), and including current NBA players Kirk Hinrich (Chicago, 2003), Richard Hamilton (Washington, 1999), and Charlie Villanueva (Toronto, 2005), among others. In addition, there have been some more forgettable picks, such as Ollie Johnson (Boston, 1965) and Al Bunge (Philadelphia, 1960), neither of whom played a single NBA minute. But not every #7 pick can be an Hall of Famer, and most will actually end up being contributing members of NBA teams. So what should we expect from the #7 pick in the draft? We took a look back at the NBA drafts since 1986 in order to find out. [More] source: celtics.com

JJ Cancels C's Workout, Reschedules
Wednesday, June 14, 2006
by Loyalist 6:00 PM
June 14, 2006
| “I guess it wasn’t a very good day for him,” Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge said of the 6-foot-4 shooting guard’s week, which started with a call to the C’s to cancel his pre-draft workout scheduled for Saturday in Waltham.
Quite the understatment from Danny. Redick made a big mistake, IHMO. His mistake was getting nailed on this DWI charge during some of the most crucial times for a player declaring for the draft. We think we analyze these mocks intensly. Well, we can only imagine being the player. Redick is a guy looking at a possible rookie salary of at least $1.5 should he be selected 10th pick. If the Wolves take him at 6, for some reason, he'd get about $2.2 mil. The point is, there is money and character at stake. Will GM's in the lottery want to risk a team for a player unproven in the Association?
“It sounds like it was an aggravation of his back from all of the workouts he’s gone through so far,” said Ainge, who rescheduled the session with Redick for June 26, two days before the draft, though he admitted that could change for a variety of reasons. Though he would like to work out the guard again, Ainge saw Redick and Brandon Roy - the Washington guard who isn’t expected to be available when the Celtics pick at No. 7 - during a group workout two weeks ago in Los Angeles.
Considered a top 5 pick, Roy somewhat predictably canceled a trip to Waltham for a June 22 workout for Ainge and his staff.
One good thing about JJ is that he appears to be handling the situation. Of course he's got publicity people to do damage control and his back issue, which I believe is true, comes conveniently following this DWI fiasco. It may take some sting off of a really bad situation.
Ainge declined comment on Redick’s new dilemma, other than to repeat what he had said two weeks ago regarding UConn guard Marcus Williams’ theft arrest: “You hate to see someone penalized for making a mistake at a young age like this.”
Most interesting is that some previous rumors and some Mocks have us selecting Marcus Williams. It's seems a logical fit, but again, we all know the Joe Forte story. Do we risk a team for a flawed individual? Redick just doesn't seem to be worth this attention. Especially when we hold the 7th pick.

Gomes Stays Busy Preparing
by Loyalist 5:11 PM
June 13, 2006
| WATERBURY
Ryan Gomes assumed the position. He stood under the basket and demonstrated how he holds the basketball as he prepares to take a shot. He showed the positioning of the feet, and the classic 'L' shape of the shooting arm as he prepares to launch the ball toward the basket.
A youngster, maybe about five years old, raised his hand. He had a question.
"My shoelace is untied," said the little one. "Will you tie it?"
The 6-foot-7 power forward with the Boston Celtics and member of the NBA all-rookie team dropped to his knees and tied the youngster's sneaker. He picked up the ball again and got back to the business of teaching little kids how to play the game.

Redick 'Green' Guarantee?
by Loyalist 3:23 AM
June 13, 2006

| "ORLANDO - Apparently J.J. Redick's feelings for the Orlando Magic have cooled.
Just two days after proclaiming the shooting guard-thin Magic were a good fit for him, Redick canceled a private workout with Orlando that was scheduled for Wednesday."
Redick canceled his Wednesday workout with Orlando!? This coming on the heels of an ESPN rumor the C's were 'strongly' considering taking him at 7! Now, it surely seems that Redick is a lock in the top ten, right? Why would he cancel Orlando unless someone has given him a guarentee!?
"ESPN.com reported last week that the Boston Celtics were strongly considering picking the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Redick with the seventh pick. Minnesota (No. 6) and Houston (No. 8) are also in the market for a shooting guard. Redick has already worked out for Golden State (No. 9), Seattle (No. 10), Utah (No. 14) and Houston. Also, Magic general manager Otis Smith met with the star guard and watched him work out in Los Angeles earlier this month."
Obviously, all this is just rumor. We are bloated at the SG position and there is no way (no disrespect to Redick) that we pick JJ. However, Orlando is concerned Redick's canceling means he's secure a top ten team! Which opens the door for some substance to the ESPN rumor.
I still don't think it possible. The best news in all this is that McHale and the T-Wolves are looking for a guard. I sure hope, for our sake, that happens. I am not a big Redick fan.

"Sam Smith's top 5 Bulls' draft scenarios - #3. Paul Pierce and No. 7 for Luol Deng and Nos. 2 and 16. Boston says there's no way it is trading Pierce, though rumors have circulated again. I believe the Celtics this time. But Boston's vision has been a young, athletic team and with Deng and No. 2 with the youngsters they have they could be interesting. With No. 7, the Bulls could get a solid big man like Williams, Hilton Armstrong or even Bargnani."

The Luck Of The Irish

This is from Peter Vecsey, but certainly it makes one concerned nonetheless.
Loyalist June 11, 2006
| Nor are the names under discussion; the only one that caught me off guard was Paul Pierce. Asked to confirm or deny that the supposed Celtic-for-life is back on the block in exchange for an elite draft pick, a certified point guard and, no doubt, another goodie or two, a team official said, "Our intention is to extend Pierce and currently we are in the process of working on that."
