December 12, 2006 First of all, some good news. There are a couple of reports that Al is not available for trade. Chris Sheridan voices this in his ESPN Insider column
Tonight's blog entry comes from Madison Square Garden, where I informed Al Jefferson of the Celtics that he might have been the very reason why Allen Iverson is a Sixer rather than a Celtic. Word spread around the NBA grapevine quickly Monday that the Celtics had told the 76ers they were not willing to part with the 21-year-old big man in an Iverson trade. Then in Newsday, there is confirmation from Doc as to the same thing. Told after the game that Jefferson doesn't want to be traded, Rivers said: "He won't be. I try to stay out of it because I have to coach the players and I don't want to lie to the players. But I'm pretty comfortable in saying that Al will be here." Finally, Peter Vescey echoes the same thing in his column in the NY Post. Boston. Danny Ainge is determined to land himself an established veteran and Iverson is it. Paul Pierce is not available. Plenty of sacrificial Celtics are there for the 76ers' plucking, except Al Jefferson. It'd be stunning to think otherwise. This is good news and hopefully it is true because trading Jefferson would be shooting ourselves in the foot.
Staying on the subject of the Iverson trade, Bob Ryan has a great article in the Globe that voices what many of us think. Alan Iverson is uncoachable and has trouble playing well with others. Bringing him to this team would be a major mistake. I hope Danny is reading. The Globe also has an article that discusses possible trade scenarios for Iverson with Pierce voicing the opinion that if Baron Davis is traded to Philly he won't be happy. Ratliff openly questions whether Pierce and Iverson can coexist.
The Herald reports that the players are hearing the trade rumors and not all of them want a trade to go down. Big Al, in particular wants to keep this team together and he also wants to stay a Celtic for life. I, for one, hope he gets his wish. Also in this article, Wally ran with the team for the first time and looked good, but still had a lot of pain in the ankle so is still day to day. The Bennington Banner has another good article on the possible trade to get Iverson.
JB has an entertaining article on CelticsStuff Live. He presents his thoughts on the possible Iverson to Celtics talk. This statement sums up his thoughts and mine as well. Other teams may be listening, but honestly, do you really think there is a lot of interest in a 31 year old punk who makes 18 million dollars a year and has constantly put himself ahead of his team and teammates while not being able to deliver anything more than impressive stats on his own resume? What of the proud Celtic tradition of teamwork and selflessness? The Mercury News says that Iverson nixed a trade to the Bobcats. According to the article they were ready to pull the trigger and Iverson said he wouldn't report to them. My question is why would he come to Boston? We certainly aren't a contender at this point. We will be but if we trade our young talent away for Iverson chances are we may never be.
You will find recaps of our win in New York last night in The Herald, The Globe, Worcester Telegram, and Projo. My thoughts on the game are posted in the article below.
