Pierce Hit Buzzer Beater as Celtics Beat the Nets

December 10, 2006 The Celtics came out flat in New Jersey allowing the Nets to get out to a 20 point lead. We didn't score until over 8 minutes had passed in the first quarter when Gomes connected on a jumper. It looked like we were going to be blown out but then the bench came in and they brought the Celtics back and the Celtics were down only 3 at the half.
The biggest plus for the Celtics was the break out game by Al Jefferson. He scored a career high 29 points on 12 of 19 shooting to go with 14 rebounds, 1 block and 2 steals. I believe that that Al could have done this before but his teammates never got him the ball in the paint. Tonight they were finding him and he was scoring. Ryan Gomes had another solid game with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Scal had 7 points and only 1 rebound. I still can't figure out why Doc doesn't play Powe. When Powe plays, he does good things but even with a shortage of big men, Doc isn't playing him. We were out rebounded 53 to 40. Powe is a much better rebounder and I believe he would give us more than Scal on the defensive end.
Green played 25 minutes and finished with 7 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. He is going to be a special player when he gets regular minutes. West played well and showed the hustle that we have come to expect from him. He finished with 16 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Rondo had only 2 points and 2 rebounds but he brings so much energy that he changes the game when he comes in. Everyone but Doc realizes that this kid is special and doesn't need to shoot to be effective in the game.
Telfair and Allen had off nights. Telfair had 0 points and 4 assists and seemed to be behind the play all night. Tony finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls. His play continues to be inconsistent from game to game.
Pierce was not shooting the ball well. He shot 4 of 18 tonight and finished with 17 points 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 turnovers. But he came up clutch on the last play, hitting the game winner at the buzzer.
This was a good win for us. In spite of playing on the road in the second of back to back games, and playing without 2 of our starters and with no centers, we pulled out a win. Our young players are stepping up and Green and Jefferson are beginning to live up to their potential. We didn't let the big deficit early get us down and kept fighting and playing hard until the end. Hopefully we can build on this win and get another win on Monday.
