October 9, 2006 Just one more day until the first preseason game. Excitement and high expectations abound among Celtics fandom. Here's what is going on today:
The Herald addresses several subjects in a piece by Steve Bulpett. First is that Doc may make a cut sooner than later. It will probably be one of our extraneous big men. We have 4 that are vying for that final roster spot: Pittsnogle, Akingbala, Olowokandi, and Jones. Of the 4, I am hoping that they keep Jones. He has one year experience over Pitts and Akingbala. Olowokandi has proven over an entire career that he doesn't work and doesn't produce. Signing him would be a gap filler for this year. Jones can produce for years to come. I love his athleticism, his rebounding and the fact that he can block shots with both hands. He is a mobile big man who can defend in the paint.
Also in this article is a little bit on Scal. While last year he showed up out of shape and never did get in good shape, word is that he is in much better shape this season. Hopefully he will be able to fit into a role at the end of the bench. I see Scal as the 11th or 12th man. He is a good guy and is great at encouraging the kids and maybe can fit into a role where for this team. A tidbit at the end of the article tells us that Delonte went through a full practice and did very well.
In the Globe Notebook, Allan Ray and Gomes spend a lot of time working out together after practices and talk some trash about their alma maters. The success of Gomes, who was drafted 50th, can be an inspiration for Ray, who is hoping to stick with the team for the season. He is quick and plays defense and could help with his shooting off the bench. I can see him sticking around.
If you missed last night's Blogger's Night on CelticsStuff Live, you missed a great show. You can still download it from their site and enjoy the thoughts of Celtics Bloggers around the net. You missed a great time in the chat room that has now been dubbed the pit. Next week's guest is Sean Grande so make plans to listen if you can.
