September 28, 2006Danny has gone all out to bring in point guards who can run the fast break. He has been building this team to run since he got here and it appears the parts are all in place to finally have a running team. In Doc's interview he had this to say:
"Yeah, we want to run, but we want to be an efficient running team. Quite honestly, I didn't think we were a very good fast-break team last year at all, even though we scored high numbers. I thought we were pretty bad on the break. That's where we have to improve. We have to value the ball; we have to make better decisions." They wanted to run last year but always seemed to lapse into a half court offense with Pierce driving into a double team. With Ricky and Paul in the line up, both had the ball in their hands too much and spent way too much time dribbling. Now, we will have a true floor general to run the team but the question is, will Pierce follow and allow the point guard to lead.
In his interview on FSNE, Wally seemed very excited to play with Telfair. He mentioned that when you run with a point guard like Bassy you get easy shots. One of the keys to the season will be whether Pierce and Wally can keep up with the point guards. We now have the centers who can block shots and get the rebounds to start the fast break. If we can get everyone running with the point guards, we should get some very easy baskets and prevent the defenses from setting up to stop us.
I am already getting visions of Perk grabbing the rebound and throwing the perfect outlet pass to Bassy who flies up the court and draws 2 defenders as he cuts into the paint and fires a bullet pass out to Pierce who nails the jumper. Next play, Perk rebounds again and fires the pass out to Bassy who hits a cutting Jefferson for a layup. Ratliff blocks the shot and Bassy takes off with the ball, passes out to Wally who hits a 3. If we can get everyone to run, it is going to be a very exciting season. I do believe that Pierce and Wally both will be on board with the running game. Both should be healthy and able to keep up with the fast break. We should see some exciting basketball this season.
