September 27, 2006 Celtics.com has an interview with Doc Rivers.
"No, I don't know yet. I think this is the year that several have to. Since I've been here, we have yet to develop a core. Before you can do anything, you have to develop that. Before you can make trades and figure out where you want to go, you have to figure out who you want to keep. Because we've made trades and decided to play a lot of young guys, we need them to develop and show us that they're keepers. And I think this is the year, and I really believe this, that several will show us that we can't do without them and that they're people worthy of hanging on to. Danny seemed pretty certain of his core but Doc doesn't know. I do agree that we have several who will prove that they are keepers this season. I like the thought of keeping the young players until we know which ones are going to take that next step. I don't want to watch our young players develop on another team and lead them to a championship.
Well, some of them won't play. It's just that simple. We have too many of them to play them all. "We're in the business of trying to win games and trying to build a team for the future that will win for a long time. This is still a competition, that will never change. So when you look at the numbers of guys that we have, some guys wont play. It's just that easy. But that's on every team." With 17 right now on our roster, it is obvious that 2 will have to be cut in training camp. beyond that, 9 or 10 will win regular playing time and barring any injuries, the other 5 or 6 will either go to the D League or sit on the bench and will have to get their playing time in practice. My one fear is that Doc will play guys just because they are veterans (Scal) even though they don't deserve the time. He did that last year and I really hope he doesn't do it this season.
It is Delonte's job. It was Delonte's job at the end of the year. But when camp starts, it's an open position. I know Delonte, so obviously, he probably has the upper-hand, because I know what he can do. But it's going to be a very competitive camp, and that's all good." Doc says it is Delonte's job to lose, but he also talks about how quick Rondo and Telfair are and how we lacked that last year. The battles in training camp for the point guard position are going to be fierce for sure.
"I'm just excited about the team. This is the first year since I've been here that you can actually see a group developing. By the end of the year, I think we'll know who will be Celtics for a long time." I am excited about the team as well. By the end of the year, we should see several of our young players break out and it will be much more obvious than it is now who are going to reach their potential and who will stall out.
