Point Guard Controversy
Tuesday, August 8, 2006
Comments:
Banks never impressed me, and it never got to the point where I was on his bandwagon. I got to see a UNLV game before he came out for the draft and saw his talent as a scoring PG, but I could sense that he's the type of PG who either needed to be the focal point of the offense, ala Stephon Marbury, or else he'd be sort of an invisible player.

In hindsight, I think Ainge did actually have a botched draft--and it was with his first draft and the first ever selection he's made as GM. Instead of drafting Luke Ridnour (whom I hoped and hoped he would have taken because I knew TJ Ford and Kirk Hinrich would have been long gone), Ainge tried to hit a grandslam with the most impactful PG out there. No doubt that Banks has more natural physical skills than Ridnour, but in terms of basketball skills and playmaking skills go, Ridnour is much better than Banks.

But that's the past. I like the opportunities Telfair and Rajon will have to display their games here in Boston. We have the luxury to let both guys prove their worth during the next couple of years and keep whoever is the better one (or maybe we'll keep both). I like Telfair, and think he can be much better once he learns how to make the simple lateral pass to an open guy 5 feet away from him, instead of always looking to make a great pass through traffic and impress the crowd. His game can be very similar to Chris Paul if and when he learns to take what the defense gives him.

But overall, Rondo is the guy who could end up stealing the starting position. His combination of playmaking skills and defense is definitely a big plus. And he's also a better finisher once he's in the paint. This kid is special, and unlike Banks, when I saw Rondo play in high school, I thought he could turn out to be a really good one.
