Gomes and Rondo Impress in Summer League
Sunday, July 16, 2006
Comments:
Rondo is a player with a lot of feel for the game. He doesn't necessarily have to have plays called to be an effective PG. Just let him roam around the court and as long as players are moving around, giving him a target, he'll find them.

Right now, Telfair has more experience in the NBA and he is much more charasmatic and vocal, so I think he'll be the starter. But Rondo can take it away from him if he plays his cards right. His defense can play a big part in him becoming a starter.

But as a backup PG, he'll be a terrific player. Hopefully Rivers will give him the time of day early in the season.

Gomes could be our opening day starter--depending if Jefferson decides to give Gomes the starting spot or not. If not, he'll be a terrific backup PF/SF.

I'm very optimistic about our second unit. We have good backup players on the bench. Gomes, Delonte, Rondo, Gerald, Tony, DJ (yep, I think he'll remain with our parent team and not be sent to the D-League), and maybe Allen Ray, will be terrific players at Doc's disposal. We shouldn't have to over tax our starters anymore.

I agree that DJ will probablly stick with the parent team... We are very thin at the Center position. We have Perk and Ratliff ... Perk hasn't been given more than 19 min a game so far but had proved he can play when he is given the playing time. Ratliff has been prone to injury. Big Al will play center I think when Doc goes to small ball but beyond that, Jones is our only other center. Either Danny needs to bring another center in or these guys need to produce.

Which leads me to think, FL12, that we will be in some sort of trade to bring in a big man. I find it utterly unfathomable that Ainge is comfortable enough to enter the season with what we have right now at the 4 and 5. Not that the players we have are useless--that's not what I'm trying to get at at all. But they are either too inexperienced to depend on for big minutes (Dwayne Jones, Leon Powe), or injury may be a concern (Theo Ratliff, Perk with his shoulder, Jefferson with his ankle). If something happens to even one of these players, we have no insurance policy. And at the rate our young guys are picking up fouls, we are constantly in need of substituting big men.

I think Ainge at one point was really going hard for Iverson. But as soon as he realized that Philly wanted us to draft Randy Foye so that he can be included in the deal, and Ainge realized that his buddy Kevin McHale was going to draft Foye at 6 and we had no chance to get Foye, Ainge made the quick decision to get ourselves Telfair so that we would not lose out on getting our future PG. But in doing so, Ainge had to move Raef LaFrentz, our reliable, tried and tested PF/C, and now this leaves us short handed. And now that we got our future PG (Telfiar, or quite possibly Rajon), Ainge is no longer set in stone on getting Iverson, and is now turning his attention on getting a big man.
